Sri Vasishtha said: Then, in Jambudvipa, in the depth of night, the son asked his father, who sat on the peak at the top of a kadamba tree, a man of pure mind.
putra uvāca | ko'sau khotttha iti khyāto bhūpastātottaṃākṛtiḥ | kathitaṃ ca kimetanme tvayeti brūhi tattvataḥ || 2 ||
The son said: Father, who is this king known as Khottha, of supreme form? Tell me truly what you meant by what you told me.
kva bhaviṣyati nirmāṇaṃ vartamāne kva gamyatā | ubhayārthaviruddhatvānmanmohāya vacastava || 3 ||
How can something belong to the future when it is being made, and also belong to the present when it is passing away right now? Your words carry both meanings at once, and since they contradict each other, they only confuse me.
This structure of the world, though unreal, has arisen with a beginning; it is made of nothing, yet it stretches out wide. This is what I have told you.
tatsvarūpamidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadābhogi vidyate | jāyate tatra jāte tu tasminnaṣṭe vinaśyati || 7 ||
This whole world, filled with enjoyments, exists as that very thought's own form. It is born when the thought is born, and when the thought is destroyed, the world too perishes.
In it are pools whose water is sugarcane juice and milk, whose lotus-shoots are made of jewels and gems, whose lotuses hold the fire that lives under the sea — and it has seven step-wells, each as vast as a great ocean.
Below on earth and above in the sky are riches that come from good deeds and bad deeds; in it, these are bought and sold among men, gods, and hill-tribes.
These bodies move by the push of the breath, like a machine driven by wind. They are made of flesh and clay, their bones white like wood; they are many-colored, and their skin is a smooth, clean covering.
They have windows — the ears, the nose, the mouth, and the palate; their limbs, starting with the arms, are like its streets; and the five senses are its dim little lamps.
As a cat lives inside a grain-bin, as a snake lives inside a bellows, as a pearl lies inside a bamboo stalk — so does the ego live inside the body.
In the houses of the body, waves of thought rise for a moment and die down for a moment, like a lamp flickering, just as waves rise and fall in the ocean.
This vast suffering of the world spreads because thought seems real. When thought is not real, it destroys that same suffering, a blindness as thick as darkness.
For one moment it stops wanting; for another moment, on its own, it starts wanting again; for another moment it grows agitated, all through mere thought, like a child.
Give up all your views, control the mind with the mind itself, and destroy this thought completely, the thought that deals with things both outside and inside.
even if Shiva is your teacher, or Vishnu, or Brahma who was born from a lotus, or the lord of the world overwhelmed by boundless compassion, or an ascetic,
anābādhe'vikāre ca sukhe paramapāvane | saṃkalpopaśame yatnaṃ pauruṣeṇa paraṃ kuru || 43 ||
So make the greatest effort, through your own strength, to quiet thought, for the sake of that happiness which is free from trouble, unchanging, and supremely pure.
The unreal, the real, and what is both real and unreal, all of it comes only from thought, from nothing else. And thought itself is both real and unreal, so what here can truly be called real?
Be without thought, but go on with whatever ordinary activities come to you. When thought is completely destroyed, you turn to face pure awareness, the one thing thought can never grasp.
What arises from the true source, whose nature is sattva and which is made of truth, that is not this world of suffering. This world is useless, only resembling the self.
Come to know the highest truth, cast away completely and forcefully this net of doubt, and reach that one state, which has nothing else beside it, for the sake of a joy that has no limit, with the movements of your mind stilled as if in deep sleep.
