śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ramye dhaneṣu dārādau śokasyāvasaro hi kaḥ | indrajālekṣaṇāddṛṣṭe naṣṭe kā paridevanā || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: when wealth, a wife, and things like that seem pleasant, why should there be any grief? When something seen in a magic show is lost, what is there to cry about?
A castle built in the sky may fall apart or may be decorated, what does that matter? A son and things like him are only a piece of not knowing the truth, so what real link do they have with pleasure and pain?
When wealth, a wife, and things like that seem pleasant, why should there be any joy? When a mirage grows bigger, what joy is there for someone looking for water in it?
When wealth and a wife grow larger, sorrow would fit better than any satisfaction. When the illusion of delusion grows bigger, who here can feel at ease?
When wealth, a wife, or things like that are lost, why should there be joy either? But it is through these same losses that the wise, who keep their eyes on the far shore, come to freedom from desire.
anāgatānāṃ bhogānāmavāñchanamakṛtrimam | āgatānāṃ ca saṃbho ga iti paṇḍitalakṣaṇam || 8 ||
Truly not wishing for pleasures that have not yet come, not just pretending, and simply enjoying whatever pleasures do come, this is the mark of a wise person.
This whirl and confusion of worldly life hides your real self, and it acts like a hidden killer. Stay wide awake in it, and live in such a way that you never fall into foolishness.
People who think of themselves as knowing the truth, yet do not see that this whole grand show of worldly life truly holds no real variety in it, they are the ruined ones, the dull-witted.
Whoever's delight turns toward the visible world, by whatever reasoning at all, sinks down. Such a person's mind and conviction are never clear anywhere.
For someone who, about every single thing, has even let go of the very idea that it is unreal, he holds on to the all-knowing self, and false, unreal ignorance cannot touch him.
Whoever's mind, having given up both believing and disbelieving, stays settled in the thought that I and this whole world are one, that all this is just one thing, that person does not drown.
Hold on, with your mind, to the pure state that lies between being and not being. Do not grab the visible world, outer or inner, and do not throw it away either.
atyantavirataḥ svasthaḥ sarvavāsavivarjitaḥvyomavattiṣṭha nīrāgo rāma kāryaparo'pi san || 15 ||
Stay completely detached, at ease within yourself, free of every desire, remain like the sky, without any craving, Rama, even while you go on doing your work.
yasya necchā na vānicchā jñasya karmaṇi tiṣṭhataḥ| na tasya lipyate prajñā padmapatramivāmbubhiḥ || 16 ||
The wise person who has neither desire nor its absence while still carrying out actions, his understanding never gets stained, just as a lotus leaf is never wetted by water.
Let your eyes and hands do their seeing and touching, or not do them, either way. Your senses and mind are a small matter. Rama, be free of wanting, and stay steady in yourself.
The thought this is mine about the things the senses meet is false. Don't let your mind sink into it, stay untouched by it. Let it act or not act, either way.
Raghava, when the pleasure of what the senses meet no longer tastes sweet to your heart, then you have known what is to be known, and you have crossed the ocean of becoming.
For you, having tasted what the senses meet, whether you still have a body or not, freedom comes about on its own, even without your wanting it, simply because that is how the truth works.
Rama, to reach the highest state, use your highest wisdom to separate your noble mind from the mass of your inner impressions, the way you separate scent from a flower. Separate it.
Follow the ways of those who are free while still alive, great souls, always content, of great wisdom, not the ways of the greedy and deceitful, who are stingy about their own pleasures.
na tyajanti na vāñchanti vyavahāraṃ jagadgatam | sarvamevānuvartante pārāvāravido janāḥ || 26 ||
Those who know both sides of things, the world and what is beyond it, neither give up worldly life nor crave it. They simply go along with all of it, as it comes.
suśūnye'pi na khidyante devodyāne nasaṅginaḥ | niyatiṃ ca na muñcanti mahānto bhāskarā iva || 28 ||
Whether in a completely empty place or in a garden fit for the gods, they do not suffer, because they are not attached to either. And like the sun, these great ones never leave their fixed course.
You too, Rama, have reached this wide discernment. And through the strength of this wisdom, you are now settled and at peace in true knowledge, handsome one.
Settled in yourself, having given up all your wants, wishing only to watch things from a distance, take the highest coolness into yourself, and move through the world, faultless one.
Sri Valmiki said, with these pure words from the sage whose mind was spotless, Rama at once shone as if freshly cleaned. Lit up within by the sweet nectar of knowledge, he became cool, like a full moon.
