14.12.1

kāla uvāca | surāsuranarākārā imā yāḥ saṃvido mune | brahmārṇavādabhinnāstāḥ satyametanmṛṣetarat || 1 ||

Time said, sage, these awarenesses that take the shape of gods, demons, and men are not different from the ocean of Brahman. This is the truth, anything else is false.

mithyābhāvanayā brahman svavikalpakalaṅkitāḥ | na brahma vayamityantarniṃścayena hyadhogatāḥ || 2 ||

Brahmin, through false imagining they become stained by their own thought constructs. Deep inside they become sure, we are not Brahman, and because of this they fall down low.

brahmaṇo vyatiriktatvaṃ brahmārṇavagatā api | bhāvayantyo vimuhyanti bhīmāsu bhavabhūmiṣu || 3 ||

Even while they rest inside the ocean of Brahman, by believing they are separate from Brahman they become confused, and they wander lost in the frightening lands of birth and rebirth.

yā etāḥ saṃvido brāhmyo mananaikakalaṅkitāḥ | etatkarmaṇāṃ bījamapyakarmaiva viddhi tāḥ || 4 ||

Know this. These awarenesses that belong to Brahman are stained only by thinking, and that is why they become the seed of these actions, yet in themselves they are no action at all.

saṃkalparūpayaivāntarmune kalanayaitayā | karmajālakarañjānāṃ bījamuṣṭyā karālayā || 5 ||

This same inner working, the will inside you, sage, grips like a fierce fist a handful of seeds, the seeds of the karanja tree that make up the tangled net of action.

imā jagati vistīrṇāḥ śarīropalapaṅktayaḥ | tiṣṭhanti parivalganti rudanti ca hasanti ca || 6 ||

These rows of body after body, scattered across the world like stones, stand there, move about, weep, and laugh.

ābrahmas tambaparyantaṃ spandanaiḥ pavano yathā | ullasanti nilīyante mlāyanti vihasanti ca || 7 ||

From Brahma, the very highest, down to a single blade of grass, everything trembles like the wind, flaring up, disappearing, withering, and bursting into laughter.

tā etāḥ kāścidatyacchā yathā hariharādayaḥ | kāścidalpavimohasthā yathoraganarāmarāḥ || 8 ||

Of these, some are utterly clear and pure, like Vishnu, Shiva, and the other great gods. Some stand in only a little delusion, like serpents, men, and gods.

kāścidatyantamohasthā yathā tarutṛṇādayaḥ | kāścidajñānasammūḍhāḥ kṛmikīṭatvamāgatāḥ || 9 ||

Some stand in complete delusion, like trees and grass. Some, wholly confused by ignorance, have come down to the state of worms and insects.

kāścicattṛṇavaduhyante dūre brahmamahodadheḥ | aprāptabhūmikā etā yathoraganagādayaḥ || 10 ||

Some are carried off like straw, far from the great ocean of Brahman. These have not yet reached the right stage, like serpents and mountains.

sattvamātraṃ samālokya kāścidevamupāgatāḥ | jātājātā nikhanyante kṛtāntajaraṭhākhunā || 11 ||

Some, seeing nothing but their own bare existence, come to this end. Whether already born or not yet born, the old rat called death digs them in and buries them.

kāścidantaramāsādya brahmatattvamahāmbudheḥ | gatāstattāṃ samaṃ kāryairharibrahmaharādikāḥ || 12 ||

Some have gone deep into the great ocean that is the truth of Brahman. They have become one with that state of Brahman even while carrying out their own work, these are Vishnu, Brahma the creator, Shiva, and the rest.

alpamohātmikāḥ kāścittameva brahmavāridhim | adṛṣṭapārabhūmyaughamavalambya vyavasthitāḥ || 13 ||

Some, with only a little delusion left in them, stand firm, resting on that same ocean of Brahman, a flood so vast that no one has seen its far shore.

kāściddbhoktavyajanmaughabhuktajanmaughakoṭayaḥ | vandhyāḥ prakāśatāmasyaḥ saṃsthitā bhūtajātayaḥ || 14 ||

Some classes of beings exist in the millions, with endless births still to be lived and endless births already lived, going nowhere, whether they are of the light or of the dark.

kāścidūrdhvādadho yānti yathā hastānmahatphalam | ūrdhvādūrdhvataraṃ kāścidadhastātkāścidapyadhaḥ || 15 ||

Some fall from a high place to a low one, like a heavy fruit slipping out of a hand. Some rise from a high place to a still higher one. Some sink from a low place to one still lower.

bahusukhaduḥkhakarākarākṣaye yaṃ paramapadāsmaraṇātsamāgate ha | paramapadāvagamāt prayāti nāśaṃ vihagapatismaraṇād viṣavyatheva || 16 ||

This endless round, which brings so much pleasure and pain, has come about here only because the highest state was forgotten. Once the highest state is known, it is destroyed completely, just as remembering Garuda, the king of birds, ends the pain of snake poison.
