14.11.1

kāla uvāca | adyodāmataraṅgaughabhāṅkāraraṇitānile | tīra eva taraṅgiṇyāstapastapati te sutaḥ || 1 ||

Kala said, today your son is doing his penance right on the bank of the river, in air that roars with the crash of wild, surging waves.

jaṭāvānakṣavalayī jitasarvendriyabhramaḥ | tatra varṣaśatānyaṣṭau saṃsthitastapasi sthire || 2 ||

He wears matted hair and a string of prayer beads, and he has conquered all the confusion of his senses. There he has remained firm in unbroken penance for eight hundred years.

yadīcchasi mune draṣṭuṃ taṃ svapnābhaṃ manobhramam | tatsamunmīlya vijñānānetramāśu vilokaya || 3 ||

Sage, if you wish to see him, that son who is like a dream, a mere confusion of mind, then open your eye of wisdom and look at once.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityukte jagadīśena kālena samadṛṣṭinā | muniḥ saṃcintayāmāsa jñānākṣṇā tanayehitam || 4 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, when Kala, the lord of the world who looks on everything equally, had said this, the sage looked with his eye of knowledge into what had happened to his son.

dadarśa ca muhūrtena pratibhānavśādasau | putrodatamamśeṣeṇa buddhidarpanaśabdimbibitam || 5 ||

And in a moment, through the power of his own insight, he saw his son's whole story completely, reflected as in a mirror in his intellect.

punarmandarasānusthāṃ svasthāṃ kālāgrasaṃsthitāmsamaṅgāyāstaṭādetya viveśa svatanuṃ bhṛguḥ || 6 ||

Bhrigu then came from the bank of the river Samanga and entered his own body again, the body that was resting at ease on the ridge of Mount Mandara, seated before Kala.

vismayasmerayā dṛṣṭyā kālamālokya kāntayāvītarāgamuvācedaṃ vītarāgo munirvacaḥ || 7 ||

Looking at Kala, who was free of craving, with a lovely gaze that smiled in wonder, the sage, himself free of craving, spoke these words.

bhagavanbhūtabhavyeśa bālā vayamanujjvalāḥtvādṛśāmeva dhīrdeva trikālāmaladarśinī || 8 ||

Lord, ruler of what has been and what is to come, we are like children, dim and unclear. Only a mind like yours, god, sees all three times, past, present and future, without any flaw.

nānākāravikārāḍhyā satyevāsatyarūpiṇīvibhramaṃ janayatyeṣā dhīrasyāpi jagatsthitiḥ || 9 ||

This state of the world is rich with many shapes and changes. It looks real, though its nature is unreal, and it creates confusion even in a steady, wise person.

tvameva deva jānāsi tvadabhyantaravarti yatrūpamasyā manovṛtterindrajālavidhāyakam || 10 ||

You alone, god, know the true shape, hidden within you, of this working of the mind that conjures illusions like a magician.

matputrasyāsya bhagavanmṛtyuḥ kila na vidyatetenemaṃ mṛtamālokya jātaḥ saṃbhramavānaham || 11 ||

Lord, this son of mine truly has no death in him. That is why, when I saw him dead, I became confused and troubled.

akṣīṇājīvitaṃ putraṃ kālo me nītavānitiniyatervaśato deva tucchāpīcchā mamoditā || 12 ||

Thinking, Kala has taken away my son whose life was not yet finished, under the pull of fate, god, even this small, unworthy wish rose up in me.

nanu vijñātasaṃsāragatayo vayamāpadāmsaṃpadāṃ caiva gacchāmo harṣāmarṣavaśaṃ vibho || 13 ||

It is true, lord, that we understand how this world works, and yet, over its troubles and its gains, we still fall under the hold of joy and anger.

ayuktakāriṇi krodhaḥ prasādo yuktakāriṇikartavya iti rūḍheyaṃ saṃsāre bhagavan sthitiḥ || 14 ||

Show anger to one who does wrong, and show favor to one who does right, this, lord, is the fixed rule that has taken hold in this world.

idaṃ kāryamidaṃ neti yāvatkāryaṃ jagadbhramaḥtasyaitatsaṃparityāgo heya eva jagadguro || 15 ||

The thought, this must be done, this must not, as long as it runs, is itself the world's delusion. Letting go of it completely is what must be done, teacher of the world.

kevalaṃ tāvakīṃ cintāmanālokya yadā vayaṃ | bhagavanbhava te kruddhā yātāḥ smastena bādhyatām || 16 ||

The only thing is this, it was when we, without paying heed to your true intention, once grew angry at you, lord, that we became guilty of that wrong.

Just now, god, you reminded me of what had happened to my son. Because of that, I saw this son of mine on the bank of the river Samanga.

mano jagati bhūtānāṃ dve śarīre'tra sarvagam | mana eva śarīraṃ hi yenenedaṃ bhāvyate jagat || 18 ||

For every being in this world, there are two bodies, and of the two, the mind is the one that reaches everywhere. The mind alone is truly the body, it is what makes this world come into being.

kāla uvāca | samyaguktam tvayā brahman śarīraṃ mana eva ca | karoti dehaṃ saṅkalpātkumbhakāro ghaṭaṃ yathā || 19 ||

Kala said, you have spoken well, brahmin, the body is indeed the mind. It makes the body out of its own intention, the way a potter makes a pot.

karotyakṛtamākāraṃ kṛtaṃ nāśayati kṣaṇāt | saṅkalpena manomohādbālo vetālakaṃ yathā || 20 ||

It makes a shape that never existed, and destroys what it has made in an instant, all through mere intention, out of the mind's own confusion, just as a child imagines a ghost and then makes it vanish.

tathā ca saṃbhramasvapnamithyājñānādibhāsurāḥ| gandharvanagarākārā dṛṣṭā manasi śaktayaḥ|| 21 ||

In the same way, there are powers in the mind that show themselves in the shape of a city in the sky, shining out as confusion, as dreams, as false ideas, and the like.

sthūladṛṣṭidaśāṃ tvetāmavalambya mahāmune| puṃso manaḥ śarīraṃ ca kāyau dvāviti kathyate|| 22 ||

But, great sage, if we go by this level of coarse, ordinary seeing, it is said that a person has two bodies, the mind and the body.

mano manananirmāṇamātrametajjagattriyam| na sannāsadiva sphāramuditaṃ netaranmune|| 23 ||

Sage, this whole world of the three realms is nothing but something built by the mind's own thinking. It is not real, and not unreal either, it has simply appeared, vast as it looks, and it is nothing more than that.

244.11.24

cittadehāṅgalatayā bhedavāsanayeddhayā| dvicandratvamivājñānānnānāteyaṃ samutthitā|| 24 ||

Because the mind clings to the body like a vine to a branch, and because the deep-seated habit of seeing things as separate keeps feeding it, this sense of many-ness has risen up, just as, out of a defect, a person sees two moons instead of one.

bhedavāsanayā paśyatpadārthanicayaṃ manaḥ| bhinnaṃ paśyati sarvatra ghaṭāvaṭapaṭādikam|| 25 ||

Because of this habit of seeing things as separate, the mind looks at the whole heap of objects and sees them everywhere as different things, a pot, a well, a cloth, and so on.

kṛśo'taduḥkhī mūḍho'hametāścānyāśca bhāvanāḥ | bhāvayatsvavikalpotthāṃ yāti saṃsāritāṃ manaḥ || 26 ||

The mind thinks, "I am weak, I am in great pain, I am foolish," and other such thoughts, and so it falls into the wandering state of birth and death, a state born from its own imagination.

mananaṃ kṛtrimam rūpaṃ mamaitanna yato'smyaham | iti tattyāgataḥ śāntaṃ ceto brahma sanātanam || 27 ||

Thinking is a made-up, artificial thing. It is not mine, because I am not that thinking. Understanding this and giving it up, the mind becomes quiet, and that quiet mind is the eternal Brahman.

yathā pravitatāmbhodhau drutāṃ naikatarangiṇi | śāmyatsapandatayānekakallolāvaliśālini || 28 ||

Think of a vast ocean, flowing on and on, full of countless waves, its motion settling down, rich with row upon row of billows.

vāryātmani same svacche śuddhe svāduni śītale | avināśini vistīrṇe mahāmahimani sphuṭe || 29 ||

That ocean is made only of water, level, clear, pure, sweet, and cool. It cannot be destroyed, it stretches out wide, and its greatness stands plain to see.

hrasvastaraṅgaḥ svaṃ rūpaṃ bhāvayantyasvabhāvataḥ | hrasvo'smīti vikalpena karoti svena bhāvanām || 30 ||

In that ocean, a short wave pictures its own shape wrongly, against its true nature, and through the thought "I am short," builds a fancy about itself.

dīrghastaraṅgaḥ svaṃ rūpaṃ bhāvayantyasvabhāvataḥ | dīrgho'smīti vikalpena karoti svena bhāvanām || 31 ||

A long wave likewise pictures its own shape wrongly, against its true nature, and through the thought "I am long," builds a fancy about itself.

hrasvaścaiva paribhraṣṭarūpo'smīti talātalam | bhāvayanbhūtalaṃ yāti tādṛgbhāvanayā svayā || 32 ||

And that short wave thinks, "I have lost my shape, I am falling down to the depths below," and through this fancy of its own, it simply sinks down to the level ground.

utpannaśca palādūrdhvamutthito'smīti bhāvitaḥ | sarasmi-ratnajālas tu śobhate dīptayā śriyā || 33 ||

Another wave, once risen up out of it, thinks, "I have shot upward," and, covered with a net of rays and jewels, shines with a blazing glory.

tuṣārakarabimbasthaḥ śītalo'smīti bimbitaḥ | satatācaladāvāgni-pratibimbo jvaladvapuḥ || 34 ||

One wave, sitting in the reflection of the cool moon's circle, thinks "I am cool" as the moon shows in it. Another, showing the forest fire on the mountain slope, has a burning body.

bibheti bata dagdho'smītyāttamauṇaśca kampate | pratibimbitalādrītaṭapakṣavanadrumaḥ || 35 ||

That wave, showing the reflection of the trees on the slope of the shore mountain, is afraid. It thinks, "I am burnt!", falls silent, and shakes.

364.11.36

mahadārambhasaṃrambhasaṃyukto'smīti rājate | viśallolānilātyantadhvastalolaśarīrakaḥ || 36 ||

Another wave shines proudly, thinking "I am caught up in some great, forceful undertaking," even while the restless wind rushing into it utterly batters its unsteady little body.

khaṇḍaśaḥ pariyāto'smītyāttakranda ivāravī | na cormayaste jaladhervyatiriktāḥ payodharāt || 37 ||

Yet another cries out as if wailing, thinking "I have broken into pieces." But these waves are not really separate from the sea, the great store of water.

None of these waves truly has even one form of its own, whether we call it real or unreal. Qualities like "short" and "long" do not really belong to the waves, and the waves do not really belong to those qualities.

normayaḥ saṃsthitā hyabdhau na tattatra na saṃsthitāḥ | kevalaṃ svasvabhāvasthasaṃkalpavikalīkṛtāḥ || 39 ||

The waves do not really stand in the ocean as separate things, and yet it is not that they do not stand there at all. They are simply cut into separate pieces by a thought that rests on their own nature.

naṣṭānaṣṭāḥ punarjātā jātājātāḥ punaḥ punaḥ | parasparaparāmarśānnānyatāmupayāntyalam || 40 ||

They are destroyed, yet not destroyed. They are born again and again, yet also unborn. By looking at one another, they never truly become different from each other.

ekarūpāmbusāmānyamayā eva nirāmayāḥ | tathaivāsminpravitate site śuddhe nirāmaye || 41 ||

They are made only of one and the same water, and so they have no flaw. In just this way, in this vast, bright, pure, and flawless one,

brahmamātraikavapuṣi brahmaṇi sphārarūpiṇi | sarvaśaktāvanādyante pṛthagvadapṛthakkṛtāḥ || 42 ||

in Brahman, whose one and only body is Brahman itself, whose form is boundless, who holds all power, who has no beginning and no end, things are made to look separate, though they are not separate at all.

saṃsthitāḥ śaktayaścitrā vicitrācāracañcalāḥ | nānāśaktirhi nānātvameti sve vapuṣi sthitim || 43 ||

Many wondrous powers stand there, restless with all kinds of curious behavior. This manifold power indeed takes on manifold forms, while still standing within its own single body.

bṛṃhitaṃ brahmaṇi brahma payasīvormimaṇḍalam | strīpumānvyaṅgarūpeṇa brahmeva parivartate || 44 ||

Brahman swells up within Brahman, the way a ring of waves swells up within water. Taking on the shape marked out as woman and man, it still only turns as Brahman.

kalpanānyā jagannāmnī nāsīdasti bhaviṣyati | brahmaṇo jagato bhedo manāgapi na vidyate || 45 ||

There is no other thing called "the world." It never existed, does not exist now, and will never exist. Between Brahman and the world there is not even the slightest difference.

saṃpūrṇaṃ khalvidaṃ brahma jagadbrahmaiva kevalamiti bhāvaya yatnena hyanyatsarvaṃ parityaja || 46 ||

This is completely and entirely Brahman. The world is nothing but Brahman. Meditate on this with real effort, and give up everything else.

nānārūpiṇyekarūpā vairūpyaśatakāriṇīniyatirniyatākārā padārthamadhitiṣṭhati || 47 ||

Niyati, the fixed law that runs all things, has many forms yet is only one. It creates a hundred different kinds of change in shape, but its own form stays fixed, and it governs over every single thing.

jaḍājaḍamupādatte cittamāyāti cinmayevāsanārūpiṇī śaktiḥ svastharūpā sthitātmanaḥ || 48 ||

This power, which belongs to the steady Self and whose own form always stays as it is, takes on both non-living and living things, turns into the mind, and although it appears made of habits and impressions, is in truth made only of pure awareness.

brahmaivānagha tenedaṃ sphārākāraṃ vijṛmbhatenānārūpaiḥ pratispandaiḥ paripūrṇa ivārṇavaḥ || 49 ||

O sinless one, it is Brahman alone, and that is why all this spreads out into vast shapes, full of many forms and movements, like an ocean brimming full of waves.

nānātāṃ svayamādatte nānākāravihārataḥātmaivātmanyātmanaiva samudrāmbha ivāmbhasi || 50 ||

It takes on manyness all by itself, through its own play of many shapes, the Self acting within the Self, by the Self alone, just as sea water moves within water.

vyatiriktā na payaso vicitrā vīcayo yathā | vyatiriktā na viśveśāt samagrāḥ kalpanāstathā || 51 ||

Just as the many different waves are never separate from the water, so all these imagined things are never separate from the Lord of the universe.

śākhāpuṣpalatāpatraphalakorakayuktayaḥ | yathaikasmiṃstathā bīje sarvadā sarvaśaktitā || 52 ||

Just as a single tree has branches, flowers, vines, leaves, fruit, and buds, in the same way the seed always holds within it the power for all of this.

vicitravarṇatā yadvaddṛśyate kaṭhinātape | vicitraśaktitā tadvaddeveśe sadasanmayī || 53 ||

Just as many different colors are seen in strong sunlight, in the same way many different powers, made of both the real and the unreal, exist in the Lord of the gods.

544.11.54

vicitrarūpodeītyamavicitrātsthitiḥ śivāt | ekavarṇātpayovāhācchakracāpalatā yathā || 54 ||

This world of many different forms rises from the one, unchanging Shiva, just as a rainbow with all its colors rises from a cloud that has only one color.

ajaḍājjḍatodeti jāḍyabhāvanahhetukā | ūrṇanābhādyathā tanturyathā puṃsaḥ suṣuptatā || 55 ||

From the conscious self, dullness arises, and it arises only because of the very thought of dullness, just as a thread comes out of a spider, and just as deep sleep arises from within a person.

acitaścetasaḥ śaktiṃ svabandhāyecchayā śivaḥ | tanoti tāntavaṃ kośaṃ kośakārakṛmiryathā || 56 ||

Shiva, by his own wish, spins the power of the mind, which seems lifeless, into a cocoon of thread to bind himself, just as a silkworm spins its own cocoon.

svecchayātmātmano brahmanbhāvayitvaiṣa vismṛtim | karoti kaṭhinaṃ bandhaṃ kośakārakṛmiryathā || 57 ||

O wise one, the self, by its own wish, brings about this forgetting of itself, and so makes a tight bondage for itself, just as a silkworm makes its own hard cocoon.

svecchayātmātmano brahmanbhāvayitvā svakaṃ vapuḥ | saṃsārānmokṣamāpnoti svālānādiva vāraṇaḥ || 58 ||

O wise one, the self, by its own wish, shapes its own body, and so wins freedom from this cycle of birth and death, just as an elephant breaks free from the very post it was tied to.

yathaiva bhāvayatyātmā satataṃ bhavati svayam | tathaivāpūryate śaktyā śīghram eva mahān api || 59 ||

Whatever the self keeps imagining itself to be, it constantly turns into just that, and however great it may be, it fills up with that power very fast.

bhāvitā śaktirātmānamātmatāṃ nayati kṣaṇāt | anantamakhilaṃ prāvṛḍmihikā mahatī yathā || 60 ||

A power that is dwelt on turns the self completely into that very thing in an instant, just as a great mist covers everything without leaving anything out.

yā śaktiruditā śīghraṃ yāti tanmayatāmajaḥ | ya evartuḥ sthitaṃ yātastanmayo bhavati drumaḥ || 61 ||

Whatever power rises up, the unborn self quickly becomes that very thing, just as when a season comes and settles in, the tree becomes filled with that season's own nature.

na mokṣo mokṣa īśasya na bandho bandha ātmanaḥ | bandhamokṣadṛśau loke na jāne protthe kutaḥ || 62 ||

For the Lord there is no real liberation, and for the self there is no real bondage. I do not know where these two ideas of bondage and freedom, seen in the world, sprang up from.

nāsti bandho na mokṣo'sti tanmayastviva lakṣyate | grastaṃ nityamaniyena māyāmayamaho jagat || 63 ||

There is no bondage, and there is no liberation, it only looks as if the self were tied up in them. Ah, this world is pure illusion: it is eternal, yet it looks trapped inside what does not last.

yadaiva cittaṃ kalitaṃ kilānenākalātmanā | kośakāravadātmāyamanenāvalitas tadā || 64 ||

As soon as the mind is shaped by this self, who has no parts, the self at once gets wrapped up in that mind, like a silkworm caught in its own cocoon.

anyonyarūpāstvatyantaṃ vikalpitasharīrakāḥ | manaḥśaktaya etasmādimā niryānti koṭayaḥ || 65 ||

From this self come out millions and millions of powers of the mind, each one different from the rest, each one with a body that is nothing but an imagined thing.

tajjāstatsthāḥ pṛthagrūpāḥ samudrādiva vīcayaḥ | tajjāstatsthāḥ pṛthaksathāśca candraādiva marīcayaḥ || 66 ||

These powers are born from that self and rest within it, yet each one has its own separate form, like waves born from the sea. They are born from it and rest within it, yet stand apart from one another, like moonbeams that come from the moon.

asminsapandamaye sphāre paramātmamahāmbudhau | cijjale vitatābhoge cinmātrarasamālini || 67 ||

This is the vast, ever-shaking, great ocean of the highest self, whose water is consciousness itself, whose spread has no end, and which is full through and through with the taste of pure awareness.

684.11.68

Some of these waves stay still as Brahma and Vishnu; some take on the form of Rudra. Some become human beings, some become gods. These waves shimmer and shake, each one shaped by its own nature. Some become Yama, Indra, the Sun, Fire, and Kubera. Restless in their wants, these waves strike, create, and stand still, each one doing what its own nature calls for. Some become kinnaras, gandharvas, vidyadharas, and other gods. Fierce and leaping, these waves rise up and fall back down. Some keep a somewhat fixed shape, like Brahma the lotus-born and others like him. Some rise up and are destroyed at once, like gods and men.

694.11.69

kṛmikīṭapataṅgāhigomashājagarādikāḥ | kāścittasminmahāmbhodhau sphurantyetembudubinduvat || 69 ||

Worms, insects, moths, snakes, jackals, pythons, and other such creatures, some of these flash for a moment in that great ocean, like tiny drops of water.

kāściccalā naramṛgagṛdhrajambulakādikāḥ | sphuranti girikuñjeṣu velāvanataṭeṣviva || 70 ||

Some of these waves move and stir, appearing as men, deer, vultures, jackals, and other such creatures, flickering in mountain groves the way things flicker on a wooded seashore.

sudīrghajīvitāḥ kāścitkāścidatyalpajīvitāḥ atucchakalanāḥ kāścitkāścittucchaśarīrakāḥ || 71 ||

Some of these live very long, and some live only a very short time. Some have large, impressive forms, and some have small, ordinary bodies.

saṃsārasvapnasamrambe kāścitsthairyena bhāvitāḥ suvikalpahatāḥ kāścicchaṅkante susthiraṃ jagat || 72 ||

In this dream-like rush of worldly life, some of these become sure that things are lasting. Others, confused by their own doubts and ideas, come to believe that the world is solid and permanent.

alpālpabhāvanāḥ kāściddainyadoṣavaśīkṛtāḥ kṛśo'taduḥkhī mūḍho'hamitiduḥkhairvaśīkṛtāḥ || 73 ||

Some of these think very little of themselves, overcome by a sense of misery, telling themselves, "I am weak, I am deeply unhappy, I am foolish," and so they stay ruled by their own suffering.

744.11.74

kāścitsthāvaratāṃ yātāḥ kāściddēvatvamāgatāḥ kāścitpuruṣatāṃ prāptāḥ kāścidaṛṇavatāṃ gatāḥ || 74 ||

Some have become still things like plants and rocks. Some have become gods. Some have become human beings. Some have become oceans.

Some of these waves stay in the world for hundreds of world-ages, and there are many such waves. Others, pure as the moon, go on to the highest state. These trembling waves, risen from the ocean of Brahman, are nothing but consciousness itself, which also goes by another name, the mind.
