Sri Vasishtha said: the doer and the deed are not two different things. Both alike come into view by themselves, equally, from the highest state - like a flower and its scent appearing together from a tree.
In the pure Brahman, which is free of every thought, living beings appear to shine - the way blueness appears in the wide sky to the eyes of someone who does not know better.
O Raghava, until some idea has become familiar and widely accepted, the beauty of teaching - a teacher instructing a student - does not shine in this world.
ato bhedadṛśā dīnāmaṅgīkṛtyopadiśyate | brahmedamete jīvā vai veti vācāmayam kramaḥ || 6 ||
So, for the sake of simple people, the teacher accepts their way of seeing things as separate, and teaches: this is Brahman, these are the living beings. That is simply how teaching is put into words.
So it is said that the world is born from Brahman, which touches nothing. But what is born is truly the same as its cause - only this is hard to understand, so it is spoken of as birth.
tiṣṭhantyajasraṃ kāleṣu ta evānye ca bhūriśaḥ | jāyante ca pralīyante parasmiñjīvarāśayaḥ || 11 ||
They keep existing endlessly through time, those same beings, and many others besides. Great numbers of living beings are born and dissolve back into that Supreme.
O Raghava, the person and their action are not separate - like a flower and its fragrance. Both come together from the Supreme Lord, and slowly, both go back into that very same source.
It is seen in this world that demons, serpent-beings, humans, and gods, though they have no real birth, come into existence through changing states, and appear again and again.
heturviharaṇe teṣāmātmavismaraṇādṛte | na kaścillakṣyate sādho janmāntaraphalapradaḥ || 14 ||
O good sage, apart from forgetting one's own true self, no other cause can be found that makes a being wander from one birth to the next, reaping its result in a later life.
mahāsattvaguṇopetā ye dhīrāḥ samadṛṣṭayaḥ | anirdeśyakalopetāḥ sādhavastaudāhṛtāḥ || 16 ||
Those who have a great, pure quality of mind, who are wise and see everything with an equal eye, and who have a certain skill that cannot quite be put into words - such people are called the good ones, the sadhus.
For simple people to succeed in whatever they do, there are two guides to follow: the conduct of good people, and the scriptures. These two should always be followed.
iha loke ca vede ca śrutiritthaṃ sadā prabho | yathā karma ca kartā ca paryāyeṇeha saṃgatau || 19 ||
O lord, both in this world and in the Vedas, the teaching has always been the same: that action and the one who acts are linked together here, each one leading to the other in turn.
Action shapes the doer, and the doer produces the action - just like a seed and the sprout that grows from it. This is exactly the rule stated both in ordinary life and in the Vedas.
O lord, by taking this position, you have set aside the very bond between birth and action - the bond that, being inseparable, is what produced the world.
O knower of Brahman, you say Brahman has no cause, yet you also say that actions bear fruit - even fruits like becoming Brahma or other such exalted states. In the ordinary understanding of the world, these two claims cancel each other out.
When the world falls into confusion, when actions stop giving their results, and the law of the fish takes over, where the strong swallow the weak, only destruction is left.
What truly comes out of this, O lord? Tell me the real truth. Cut through this huge doubt of mine, you who are the best among those who know what should be known.
Just as there is no real difference between a flower and the fragrance sitting in it, even though the two look separate, in the same way there is no difference between action and mind, they are never separate.
Sri Rama said, whatever has been decided about a matter, without any contradiction, by people of true and clear judgment who are free from desire, that is called scripture.
When action is destroyed, the mind is destroyed. When the mind is destroyed, there is no more action. This happens only to the person who is liberated, never to the person who is not liberated.
Like fire and heat, which are always joined together, the mind and action are always joined together. If either one of the two is missing, both of them disappear together.
Rama, know that the mind always takes on the play of vibration and becomes one with that vibration itself, and that vibration is what we call action. And action in turn becomes mind. Through this mutual relation, mind and action come to take each other's place.
