The demoness said: Oh, how purifying are these words of highest truth spoken by your minister! O king with eyes like lotus petals, speak now, this very moment.
The king said: They call it the highest state where there is no sense at all of a waking world. The mind reaches it only by giving up every thought and every wish.
By its contracting and expanding, the world's dissolution and creation happen. It is the final meaning that all the words of Vedanta point to, and yet it is beyond the reach of words.
It stays between two extreme ends, and in the middle it is made of both those ends together; this whole world of moving and unmoving things is nothing but the play of its mind.
Even though it is the very self of the whole universe, its oneness as a single mass is never broken into pieces. O good lady, it is that pure being alone which you call the eternal Brahman.
eṣo'ṇurvedanādvāyuḥ svabhrāntirdṛgadṛśyata | ato na kiṃcidvāyvādi kevalaṃ śuddhacetanam || 6 ||
This tiny point of awareness, through mere feeling, seems to become wind — this is only its own confusion, the seer appearing as the seen. So there is really no wind and nothing else like it; there is only pure consciousness.
In the same way, sound arises out of the mere feeling of sound; seeing a sound as sound is itself a delusion. So here, consciousness has gone far beyond the sight of sound and the meaning of sound both.
so'ṇuḥ sarvaṃ na kiṃcicca so'haṃ nāhaṃ sa eva ca | sarvaśakyātmano'syaiva pratibhaikātra kāraṇam || 8 ||
That tiny point is everything, and yet it is nothing at all; it is 'I', it is 'not I', and it alone is both. This self, capable of anything, has its own single flash of awareness as the only cause here.
ātmā yatnaśataprāpyo labdhe'sminna ca kiṃcana | labdhaṃ bhavati taccaitatparamaṃ vā na kiṃcana || 9 ||
The Self is reached only after a hundred efforts, and yet when it is attained, nothing at all has really been gained. That very 'nothing gained' is itself the highest thing, or else it is nothing at all.
The long creeper of worldly life keeps sending out new births, one spring after another, only for as long as the awakening that cuts its very root has not yet risen.
This tiny point of awareness seems to take on shape and turn into something seen; and, like the ocean losing its water to the sun's heat while it itself stays calm and steady, it steals away this world while remaining perfectly undisturbed.
By this tiny point of pure awareness, Mount Meru, the three worlds, and a mere blade of grass are all thrown outward; whatever stands within and without is seen to be made of maya, of illusion.
Whatever exists inside this tiny point of consciousness, that same thing is seen outside. The example here is of a person full of desire, embracing his beloved in his imagination.
Just as at the very first creation, consciousness, holding all powers within itself, rose up on its own; in the same way, in a mere thought, a whole mountain at once appears by itself, seen in full.
By this consciousness alone, existing as if it were the smallest possible atom, by that most minute point alone, the whole universe is filled on every side.
aṇureva na mātyeṣa yojanānāṃ śateṣvapi | sarvagatvādanāditvādarūpatvādanākṛtiḥ || 17 ||
Yet this very atom does not fit even within hundreds of yojanas of space, because it is present everywhere, because it has no beginning, because it has no form and no shape.
In just the same way, by the pure light of consciousness, this whole world, with its mountains and its blades of grass, is made to dance without a pause — it keeps performing its own turning about, forever, like an actor's show.
Because that same atom of consciousness has countless forms, like a single piece of cloth taking many shapes, through that consciousness, having made things like Mount Meru appear wrapped around outside itself, it becomes all this.
Because its form is not bound by space, time, and the like, it is greater than Mount Meru; yet, though it is subtler than the hundredth part of a hair's tip, it is the supreme atom.
śuddhasaṃvedanākāśarūpasya paramāṇunā | śobhate nahi sāmyoktirmērusarṣapayoriva || 22 ||
To compare the form of pure awareness, which is like space itself, with a mere atom does not fit at all — it is like saying Mount Meru and a mustard seed are the same size.
Maya, decked out with all its variety, fashions this sense of being a mere atom within the one Supreme Self, just as gold, though one substance, takes the shape of a bracelet; here, this variety is not really something different.
It is by this lamp of awareness alone that the light of experience becomes visible; without this awareness, that light could exist only after first losing its own existence, that is, it cannot exist at all without it.
If the sun and everything else in this world were just one lump of dead, unconscious matter, then what would shape even be made of? Where would light be, or what would light even mean?
That pure, plain consciousness which by itself rests within its own self is the very same thing that, through the small self of the mind, is seen outside as light.
The light of the sun, the moon, and fire is not really different from thick darkness. The only difference there is, is in color, that one looks white and the other looks black.
Whatever difference there is between soot and mist, or between a cloud and mist, that is the difference between light and darkness. In truth there is no difference. That is how things really stand.
So that these two dull things can be known at all, the sun of consciousness shines on them. When it shines, through that shining these two gain their existence and become one.
The one sun of consciousness shines without ever tiring, night and day, inside and outside, even inside stone and things like stone, and it never sets and never rises.
By that sun, these three worlds shine. This world is a hut belonging to the living self who has spread himself out into it, a hut full of many pots of experience, with a hard, hollow inside.
Darkness, your own body is not destroyed by this light. You glow through a shine that is not truly separate from you, and it is in this way that all of darkness is made to appear bright.
Just as the sun, by shining, makes the day-lotus and the water-lily appear, in the same way consciousness makes the existence of both light and darkness appear.
Inside the atom of consciousness lie all the atoms of experience, just as inside the sap of spring lie the beauty of the flower, the leaf, and the fruit.
These atoms of complete experience rise up out of the atom of consciousness, like a colorful series of things arising one after another out of the sap of the spring season.
The atom of the supreme self has, because it is so subtle, no taste of its own at all, yet it alone gives birth to the existence of every taste there is, and it tastes itself, by itself.
yo yo nāma rasaḥ kaścit samasto'pyapsyavasthitaḥ | pratibimbamivādarśe taṃ vinā nāstyasau svataḥ || 38 ||
Whatever taste there is, any taste at all, though it is present fully in water, like a reflection in a mirror, without that supreme atom it has no existence of its own.
Even when the atom of pure consciousness lets go of it, everything still stays standing. The world, without awareness, is as good as abandoned. With awareness, everything has something to rest on.
Because it is unable to keep itself hidden, the whole world becomes covered by it. It spreads out its own supreme, atom-sized mind the way a canopy is spread out.
The supreme self, whose form is like the open sky, cannot hide itself even a little, even for a moment, just as an elephant cannot hide in a patch of grass.
Yet even so, having spread over the whole world and being known, it hides itself in an instant. It drops the world in a flash like a child, oh, what thick illusion this is!
Through the mere consent of pure consciousness, this world lives on even though it does not truly exist, just as a row of forest trees turns colorful and alive when spring's sap awakens in it.
cittasattai va makhilaṃ svato jagadivoditam | madhumāsarasollāsācchitro hi vanakhṇḍakaḥ || 44 ||
In this way, through the existence of consciousness alone, the whole world seems to rise up by itself, just as a patch of forest becomes colorful through the outburst of spring's sap.
Because it is the essence inside every part of everything, it seems to have a thousand hands and eyes, yet that very atom is the supreme one, always arising without any parts at all.
A tiny fragment of a single blink, that much awareness in the atom of consciousness, can appear as thousands of world-ages, just as in a dream one can pass from childhood to old age.
Then that same tiny instant of a blink, through the mere play of universal existence, unfolds as a single flash stretching across hundreds of millions of world-ages.
Just as the firm belief "I have eaten" can arise in someone even though he has not eaten at all, in the same way, within a single instant, the certain feeling that a whole world-age has passed can arise.
People whose minds are filled with old impressions are seen holding just such a belief, without having eaten, I have eaten, the same way a person in a dream sees his own death.
Whatever exists, wherever it exists, arises only out of that very thing itself. Change is seen only in something that has a shape, never in the pure, empty sky.
An instant and a world-age are wrapped together like a husk around a grain of rice, through this pairing of appearance and awareness, that tiny point of consciousness rests within its own self.
Since the world's existence arises only from the pure atom of consciousness, and since it is in that atom alone that being an enjoyer and being a doer are established,
jaganna kiṃcitkriyate sarvadaiva na kenacit | vilīyate ca no kiṃcinmānuṣyāddṛśyakhaṇḍanam || 57 ||
nothing in this world is ever done by anyone at all, and nothing is ever destroyed; the breaking apart of what is seen into separate things happens only out of an individual person's own limited view.
sarvaṃ samasamābhāsamidamākāśakośakam | jagattayopaśabdaṃ ca viddhyanādyaṃ niśācari || 58 ||
Know, O night-wandering one, that all this, this vessel-like space, is a uniform, even appearance, and that this word world is only a name; know it to be without beginning.
The tiny point of consciousness, in order to make the visible world real, takes its own inner wonder of consciousness, which actually rests within itself, and gives it an outer form.
This outside and inside exist only in words, not in the real thing; they are used to teach beings, since in all three worlds everything is, in truth, made of consciousness.
The seer, moving into the state of the unseen, does not truly see itself; like something that merely falls within the range of the eye's sight, it stands as if existing and as if not existing.
na ca gacchati dṛśyatvaṃ draṣṭāhyasadavāstavam | ātmanyeva na yatkiṃcit tattāmeti kathaṃ paraḥ || 62 ||
And the seer does not really become an object that is seen, for that would be unreal, not actual. When nothing at all exists apart from the self, how could anything else ever become other?
That very power of seeing, living in the eye, turns its own body, which is really just the end result of its own mental impressions, into a visible outer form, and so rises up as the seer.
The existence of a seen object can never exist without the state of being seen by a seer, just as fatherhood cannot exist without a son, and just as twoness cannot exist without oneness.
draṣṭaiva dṛśyatāmeti na draṣṭṛtvaṃ vināsti tat | vinā pitreva tanayo vinā bhoktreva bhogyatā || 65 ||
It is the seer alone that becomes the seen; the seen cannot exist without the state of being a seer, just as a son cannot exist without a father, and the state of being enjoyed cannot exist without one who enjoys.
In making the seen object, the seer truly has the power to do so, because it is made of consciousness, just as pure gold has the power to be shaped into a bracelet and other things.
But the seen object has no power to make the seer, because it is lifeless matter, just as a gold bracelet has no power to make the gold it is made of.
Consciousness makes what is unreal seem real by creating the seen world, a baseless creation that becomes the cause of delusion, just as gold creates the illusion of being a bracelet.
For just as, when the appearance of being a bracelet shines forth, the gold does not lose its nature as gold and shines forth as truly real, in the same way that one essence keeps shining forth in both the state of seer and the state of seen.
The seer, while standing as the seen object, still goes on living as the seer, just as, when the sense of being a bracelet is present, the gold still goes on being gold.
In a single appearance, there is truly no such division between seer and seen; when the notion man is shining forth, where is there room for the notion animal to arise?
The seer, while seeing the seen, does not truly see itself; for once the seer has fallen into the state of being seen, its existence stands as though it were non-existence.
When true knowledge makes the seen dissolve, only the seer's bare existence shines - just as when the bangle is not seen as a bangle, the gold's own nature, which is not a bangle, shows itself.
dṛśye satyasti vai draṣṭā dṛśyaṃ draṣṭari bhāsate| dvayena ca vinā naikaṃ naikamapyasti cānayoḥ || 74 ||
When the seen thing exists, the seer exists; the seen thing shines within the seer. Without both together, neither one exists - and neither of these two exists by itself.
When a person knows everything exactly as it is, through the self that is pure awareness, only one thing remains - something clear, that words cannot reach.
The self, the act of seeing, and the thing seen are all lit up by it, as if by a lamp; and this tiny point of pure consciousness alone has made everything.
The wise person sees through and dissolves the group of three - the knower, the knowing, and the thing known - just as gold dissolves the appearance of being a bangle or the like, an appearance that stands there but is not made of anything real apart from the gold.
yathā na jalabhūmyādeḥ pṛthakkiñcinmanāgapi | tathaitasmātsvabhāvāṇornakiñcitpṛthagasti hi || 78 ||
Just as nothing at all is separate, even a little, from water or earth or such things, in the same way nothing at all is separate from this tiny point that is one's own true nature.
sarvagānubhavātmatvātsarvānubhavarūpatḥ | ekatvānubhavanyāye rūḍhe sarvaikatāsya hi || 79 ||
Because this awareness reaches everywhere and is present as every experience, and because the rule that experience is one is well established, everything is truly one in it.
asyecchayā pṛthaṅnāsti vīciteva mahāmbhasaḥ | icchānurūpasampatterbhāvitārthaikatā kila || 80 ||
Through its own will, nothing stands apart from it, just as a wave is not apart from the great ocean. Because each thing comes into being exactly as it is willed, the thing that is imagined is truly one with it.
The highest self exists alone, not limited by place or time or anything like that. Because it is the self within everything, it is the self of everything, known by itself through every experience.
This great self truly exists, because its nature is consciousness, though it is not known through ordinary seeing. In this great self, which takes the form of everything, there is neither twoness nor oneness as separate things.
If there were some second thing, only then could the oneness of the one thing make sense. Twoness and oneness prove each other, the way sunlight and shade prove each other.
The world stands inside brahman the way a tree stands inside a seed. Brahman appears as many different things coming into being, yet its own nature stays calm and undisturbed all the while.
dvaitamapyapṛthaktasmāddhemaḥ kaṭakatā yathā| samyagbuddhāvabodho hi dvaitaṃ tacca na sanmayam|| 87 ||
Duality, too, is not separate from it, just as being a bangle is not separate from gold. When a person truly wakes up and understands rightly, they see that this duality is not made of anything real.
yathā dravatvaṃ payasaḥ spandanaṃ mātariśvanaḥ| vyomnaḥ śūnyatvamevaṃ hi na pṛthagdvaitamīśvarāt|| 88 ||
Just as wetness is not separate from water, movement is not separate from wind, and emptiness is not separate from space, in the same way duality is not separate from the Lord.
dvaitādvaitopalambho hi duḥkhāyaiva kriyātmane| nipuṇo'nupalambho yastvetayostatparaṃ viduḥ|| 89 ||
Perceiving duality and non-duality as separate things only brings suffering to a person caught up in doing. The wise know that it is skillful not to perceive these two as separate, and that this is the highest truth.
mātṛmānaprameyādirdṛṣṭṛdarśanadṛśyatā| etāvajjagadetacca paramāṇau citi sthitam|| 90 ||
The knower, the means of knowing, the thing known, and so on; the seer, the seeing, and the thing seen - this much is the whole world, and it all stands within a single point of consciousness.
ayaṃ jagadaṇurnityametenaṇusumeruṇā| spandanaṃ pavaneneva svāṅga eva kṛtākṛtaḥ|| 91 ||
This tiny world is forever being made and unmade by this same point of consciousness, a point as small as an atom yet as great as Mount Meru, the way the wind makes movement happen, and it all happens within its own self.
How amazing and how strange this magic is, or rather, how great is the maker of this magic, that the entire chain of the three worlds exists within the space of a single atom.
Or rather, this is simply magic that could not really happen, yet it stands there all the time. The whole existence of the world is nothing but this, being a single point of pure consciousness.
This point of consciousness holds the whole web of the world inside it, yet never loses its own calm, even stillness, just like a seed, sitting inside a pot, holds the huge tree within it.
The whole spread of a tree, with its fruits and leaves, lies inside the seed, though only a very subtle kind of sight can see it there. In the same way, the whole world lies inside the point of consciousness.
Just as a tree, complete with its branches, fruit, and flowers, stays within the hollow of the seed without losing any of them, in the same way the world unfolds out of the point of consciousness.
Duality and non-duality both rest there together, the way a tree rests inside the shell of a seed. Whoever sees that the world lies within this point of consciousness, that person truly sees.
na dvaitaṃ naiva cādvaitaṃ na ca bījaṃ na cāṅkuraḥ | na sthūlaṃ na ca vā sūkṣmaṃ nājātaṃ jātameva ca || 98 ||
It is not two, and it is not one either. It is not the seed, and it is not the sprout. It is not big, and it is not small either. It is not unborn, and it is not born either.
na cāsti na ca nāstīdaṃ na saumyaṃ kṣubhitaṃ na ca | trijagaccidaṇorantaḥ khavāyvapi na kiñcana || 99 ||
It is not existing, and it is not non-existing either. It is not calm, and it is not disturbed either. Inside that atom of consciousness are the three worlds, and even space and air are nothing at all there.
There is no world, and there is no absence of a world. What exists is only the supreme, pure consciousness. Since it is the self of everything, wherever and whenever it rises, it becomes exactly that.
Though it never truly rises, this one rises, unfolding through its own awareness. The supreme self, this one atom, exists in the void as the whole self by itself.
A tree seems to rise from the ground out of its own seed, and yet it does not really rise. In the same way, the supreme reality, out of its fondness for the world and through its own rising, becomes the world.
drumo bījatayaivāśu na saṃtyaktasamasthitiḥtiṣṭhatyapagataspandastyāgātyāgaparo'ṇukaḥ || 103 ||
The tree, being nothing but its seed, quickly stays in that same even state and never really leaves it. It remains without any movement, that tiny atom being beyond both giving up its form and not giving it up.
bisatanturmahāmeruḥ paramāṇorapekṣayādṛśyaṃ kila viśettanturadṛśyākṣṇā parāṇutā || 104 ||
Compared to the supreme atom, a lotus fiber is as huge as Mount Meru. Indeed, the visible fiber can pass through an eye that cannot be seen, such is the fineness of that supreme atom.
Compared to that supreme atom's own self, a lotus fiber is like Mount Meru. Within that very atom, dense and complete in itself, sit millions of mountains like Meru.
ekena tena mahatā paramāṇunā ca vyāptaṃ tataṃ viracitaṃ janitaṃ kṛtaṃ cadṛśyaṃ prapañcaracitaṃ nabhaseva viśvaṃ śūnyatvamacchamabhitaḥ parilabdhameva || 106 ||
By that one great atom alone, everything is pervaded, spread out, arranged, produced, and made. The visible universe, built up as this whole display, is found on every side to be clear emptiness, like the sky.
Its own form, made more beautiful by the duality it never truly gave up, resembling deep sleep, has come to oneness through right understanding, free from staying, going, or coming. In this way the world stands as a subtle mass of the highest reality.
