13.69.1

śrīvasiṣṭhuvāca | atha varṣasahasreṇa tāṃ pitāmaha āyayau | dāruṇaṃ hi tapaḥ siddhyai viṣāgnirapi śītalaḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Then, after a thousand years, the Grandfather Brahma came to her. For terrible penance to succeed, even fire mixed with poison turns cold.

manasaiva praṇamyainaṃ sā tathaiva sthitā satī | ko varaḥ kṣuccamāyālamiti cintānvitābhavat || 2 ||

Bowing to him only in her mind, she stayed exactly as she was, and became lost in thought: "What boon would be enough to end my hunger?"

ā smṛtaṃ prārthayiṣye'haṃ varam ekam imaṃ vibhum | anāyasī cāyasī ca syām ahaṃ jīvasūcikā || 3 ||

"Now I remember - I will ask this great lord for just one boon: may I become a life-needle, one that is not made of iron and also one that is made of iron."

asyoktyā dvividhā sūcir bhūtvālakṣyā viśāmyaham | prāṇināṃ saha sarveṣāṃ hṛdayaṃ surabhir yathā || 4 ||

"By his word, I will become a needle of two kinds, unseen by anyone, and enter - along with the breath - the heart of every living being, just as fragrance enters."

yathābhimatametena graseyaṃ sakalaṃ jagat | krameṇa kṣudvināśāya kṣudvināśaḥ paraṃ sukham || 5 ||

"With this power, as I wish, I would swallow the whole world, little by little, to destroy hunger - for the destruction of hunger is the highest happiness."

iti saṃcintayantīṃ tāmuvāca kamalālayaḥ | anyādṛśyāstathā dṛṣṭvā stanitābhrāravopamam || 6 ||

While she was thinking this, the Lotus-dweller Brahma - having seen her like this, unseen by others - spoke to her in a voice like the roar of thundering clouds.

brahmovāca | putri karkaṭike rakṣaḥkulaśailābhramālike | uttiṣṭha tvaṃ tu tuṣṭo'smi gṛhāṇābhimataṃ varam || 7 ||

Brahma said: "Daughter Karkati, jewel of the rakshasa clan's mountain, rise up - I am pleased with you. Take the boon you wish for."

karkaṭyuvāca | bhagavanbhūtabhavyeśa syāmahaṃ jīvasūcikā | anāyasī cāyasī ca vidhe'rpayasi cedvaram || 8 ||

Karkati said: "Lord, master of past and future, O Creator, if you are giving me a boon, then may I become a life-needle, one that is not made of iron and also one that is made of iron."

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evamastviti tāmuktvā punarāha pitāmahaḥ | sūcikā sopasargā tvaṃ bhaviṣyasi viṣūcikā || 9 ||

Vasishtha said: Saying "so be it" to her, the Grandfather spoke again: "You, the needle, joined with disease, will become the illness called Vishuchika."

sūkṣmayā māyayā sarvalokahiṃsāṃ kariṣyasi | durbhojanā durārambhā mūrkhā duḥsthitayaśca ye || 10 ||

"By subtle illusion you will harm the whole world - those who eat badly, who start things badly, who are foolish, and who live in bad conditions."

durdeśavāsino duṣṭāsteṣāṃ hiṃsāṃ kariṣyasipraviśyā''hṛdayaṃ prāṇaiḥ padmaplīhādibādhanāt || 11 ||

"You will harm those wicked people who live in bad places, entering their heart along with their breath, by afflicting the liver, the spleen, and the like."

vātalekhātmikā vyādhirbhaviṣyasi viṣūcikāsaguṇaṃ viguṇaṃ caiva janamāsādayiṣyasi || 12 ||

"You will become the disease Vishuchika, whose nature is a streak of wind, and you will strike people, whether they have good qualities or not."

guṇānvitacikitsārthaṃ mantro'yaṃ tu mayocyatebrahmovācahimādreruttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī || 13 ||

"I am now telling this mantra, for the treatment of worthy people." Brahma said: "On the northern side of the Snow Mountain there is a rakshasi named Karkati."

She, known by the name Vishuchika, is also, under that name, an unjust attacker. Here is her mantra: Om hrim hram rim ram, salutation to the power of Vishnu. Om, salutation to the goddess, the power of Vishnu. Take her away, take her away; drive her out, drive her out; burn her, burn her; crush her, crush her; destroy her; put her far away, svaha; go to the Himalaya, O life; sah sah sah; you have entered the disc of the moon, svaha. The one who knows the mantra should place this great mantra on the palm of his left hand, and with that hand wipe the body of the sick person.

himaśailābhimukhyena vidrutāṃ tāṃ vicintayetkarkaṭīkarkaśākrandāṃ mantramudgaramarditām || 15 ||

One should think of her - Karkati, crying out harshly, being crushed by the hammer of the mantra - as fleeing toward the Snow Mountain.

āturaṃ cintayecchandre rasāyanahṛdi sthitam | ajarāmaraṇaṃ yuktaṃ muktam sarvādhivibhramaiḥ || 16 ||

One should think of the sick person as resting in the moon, in a heart full of the elixir of life, free from old age and death, and released from all mental troubles and confusion.

sādhako hi śucirbhūtvā svācāntaḥ susamāhitaḥ | krameṇānena sakalāṃ procchinatti viṣūcikām || 17 ||

The one who practises this, having become pure, having rinsed himself clean, and well concentrated, cuts off the whole of Vishuchika step by step by this method.

iti gaganagatastrilokanātho gaganagasiddhagrahītasiddhamantraḥ | gata upagataśakravandyamāno nijapuramakṣayamāyamujjvalaśrīḥ || 18 ||

So the Lord of the three worlds, moving through the sky, whose perfected mantra was received by the accomplished ones who move in the sky, went on, honoured by Indra who came to meet him, and reached his own imperishable city, radiant with brilliant splendour.
