śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaatraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanamrākṣasyoktaṃ mahāpraśnajālamāvalitākhilam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Now, right here, let me tell an old story, told by a female demon, that ties together a whole web of great questions.

asti kajjalapaṅkādrerivogrā śālabhañjikāhimādreruttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī || 2 ||

There is a demoness named Karkati, fierce like a mountain of black soot, shaped like a carved statue, living on the north side of the Himalaya mountain.

viṣūcikābhidhānā ca nāmnāpyanyāyavādhikāvindhyāṭavīva dehena śuṣkā kārśyamupāgatā || 3 ||

She was also called Vishuchika, and that name itself showed how unfairly cruel she was. Like the dry Vindhya forest, her body was dry and thin, wasted away.

mahābalāgninayanā rodorandhrārdhapūraṇīnīlāmbaradharā kṛṣṇā dehabaddheva yāminī || 4 ||

Her eyes blazed like a great fierce fire, and she filled half the space between earth and sky. She wore dark blue clothes and was black, like night itself given a body.

nīhāravasanacchannā medurābhraśiraḥpaṭālambābhrabimbollasitā nityotthatimirordhvajā || 5 ||

She was wrapped in a garment of mist, with a thick canopy of clouds hanging over her head, shining like a disc of clouds, and she always carried a banner of darkness held high.

sthiravidyullatānetrā tamālatarujānukāvaidūryaśūrpāgranakhī bhasmanīhārahāsinī || 6 ||

Her eyes were like a steady streak of lightning, her knees were dark like tamala trees, the tips of her nails were as big as winnowing baskets made of cat's-eye gem, and her laugh was pale like ash and frost.

73.68.7

nirmāṃsanaradehaughapuṣpasragdāmabhūṣitāsarvāṅgodāttasaṃprotaśavamālāvirājitā || 7 ||

She wore, like a garland of flowers, a string made of heaps of fleshless human bodies, and over all her limbs she shone, decked with a raised garland of strung-together corpses.

83.68.8

vetālāveśavicalatkālakaṅkālakuṇḍalāarkādānotkadīrghāgrabhīmograbhujamaṇḍalā || 8 ||

Her earrings were black skeletons that shook whenever ghost-spirits entered them, and her circle of arms was terrible and fierce, long and stretched out as if eager to grab hold of the sun.

tasyā vipulakāyatvāddurlabhatvānnijāndhasaḥatṛpto'rṇavalekhāyā ivābhūjjāṭharo'nalaḥ || 9 ||

Because her body was so huge, and because it was hard for her to find food for herself, the fire in her belly never became satisfied, like the undersea fire of the ocean.

na kadācana sā tṛptimupayātā mahodarīvaḍavānalajihveva cintayāmāsa caikadā || 10 ||

That big-bellied woman was never, at any time, satisfied, like the tongue of the undersea fire. And one day she thought to herself.

jambūdvīpagatānsarvānnigirāmi janānyadianāratamanuśvāsaṃ jalarāśimivārṇavaḥ || 11 ||

If I could swallow all the people living in Jambudvipa, one breath after another, without stopping, the way the ocean swallows a mass of water.

meghena mṛgatṛṣṇeva tanme kṣudupaśāmyatiaviruddhaiva sā yuktiryayāpadi hi jīvyate || 12 ||

Then my hunger would be quenched, like a mirage quenched by a cloud. That is indeed a fair method, one by which a person can survive in a time of danger.

mantrauṣadhatapodānadevapūjādirakṣitamsamameva janaṃ sarvaṃ nirbādhaṃ kaḥ prabādhate || 13 ||

All people who are equally protected by mantras, herbs, austerity, charity, and worship of the gods live free of harm. Who can trouble them then?

tapaḥ karomi paramamakhinnenaiva cetasātapasaiva mahogreṇa yaddurāpaṃ tadāpyate || 14 ||

I will perform the greatest austerity, with a mind that does not tire. Through fierce and great austerity alone, whatever is hard to get can be obtained.

iti saṃcintya sā sarvajantujātajighāṃsayātaporthamatha sasmāra parvataṃ bhūtadurgamam || 15 ||

Thinking this, wanting to kill and eat every living creature, she then, for the sake of her austerity, remembered a mountain that creatures could not reach.

āruroha ca tacchṛṅgaṃ sthiravidyudvilocanā | hastapādādimaddehā śyāmalevābhramaṇḍalī || 16 ||

With eyes like steady lightning, she climbed to the peak of that mountain. Her body, with its hands, feet, and other parts, was dark like a mass of clouds.

tatra gatvātha sā snātvā tapaḥ kartuṃ kṛtasthitiḥ | atiṣṭhadekapādena candrārkāspandalocanā || 17 ||

Going there and bathing, she settled herself to perform austerity. She stood on one foot, her eyes as unmoving as the moon and the sun.

krameṇa divasāḥ pakṣāstasyā māsartavo yayuḥ | śītātapeṣu līnāyāḥ kṛtāyā iva śailataḥ || 18 ||

Gradually days, fortnights, months, and seasons passed for her, as she stayed lost in cold and heat, as if she had turned into part of the mountain itself.

sā babhūvābhramālāyāḥ samāsaṃ stambhitākṛtiḥ | kṛṣṇordhvagordhvakeśī ca khamāhartumivodgatā || 19 ||

She became, close beside the row of clouds, a still, unmoving shape, her black hair standing straight up, as if she had risen to grab hold of the sky.

ālokya tāṃ pavanajarjaritāṅgakatvak cīrāṅgaṇākṛtirṇatpavanāvadhūtaiḥ | ūrdhvasthamūrdhajatamaḥpaṭalairdadhānāṃ tāroghamauktikamajaḥ samupājagāma || 20 ||

Seeing her like this, her skin battered and torn by the wind, her body shaped like a tattered rag shaken by the roaring wind, and her upraised, matted hair carrying a mass of darkness scattered like a heap of pearl-white stars, Brahma, the unborn one, came near her.
