13.64.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yo'yaṃ sarvagato devaḥ paramātmā maheśvaraḥ | svacchaḥ svānubhavānandasvarūpo'ntādivarjitaḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: This shining being who is present everywhere, the highest self, the great lord, is clear and pure, whose very nature is the joy of his own experience, without beginning or end.

etasmātparamānandācchuddhacinmātrarūpiṇaḥ | jīvaḥ saṃjāyate pūrvaṃ sa cittaṃ cittato jagat || 2 ||

From this highest joy, whose form is pure awareness alone, the individual soul is born first; from the soul the mind is born; and from the mind the world is born.

śrīrāma uvāca | svānubhūtipramāṇe'sminbrahmaṇi brahmabṛṃhite | kathaṃ sattāmavāpnoti jīvako dvaitavarjite || 3 ||

Rama said: In this brahman, which is known only through one's own experience, which is filled full with brahman, and which is free of any twoness, how does this small individual soul come to have existence?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asadābhāsamacchātma brahmāstīha prabṛṃhitam | bṛhaccidbhairavavapurānandābhidhamavyayam || 4 ||

Vasishtha said: Here brahman exists, vast, that in which the unreal appears, its nature pure and clear, its very body the vast and awesome mass of consciousness called bliss, and it never changes.

tasya yatsamamāpūrṇaṃ śuddhaṃ satvamacihnitam | tadvidāmapyanirdeśyaṃ tacchāntaṃ paramaṃ padam || 5 ||

Of that brahman, the pure being that is equal everywhere, full, and without any mark, that cannot be pointed out even by those who know it; that is peaceful, that is the highest state.

tasyaivodyadivāśānti yatsattvaṃ saṃvidātmakam | svabhāvātspandanaṃ tattu jīvaśabdena kathyate || 6 ||

Of that very brahman, the being whose nature is awareness rises up as if breaking its own peace; that stirring, which comes on its own from its own nature, is called by the word soul.

tatremāḥ paramādarśe cidvyomnyanubhavātmikāḥ | asaṃkhyāḥ pratibimbanti jagajjālaparamparāḥ || 7 ||

There, in that supreme mirror, in the sky of consciousness, countless unending chains of worlds, made of experience, are reflected.

brahmaṇaḥ sphuraṇaṃ kiṃcidyadavātāmbudheriva | dīpasyevāpyavātasya taṃ jīvaṃ viddhi rāghava || 8 ||

Know, O Raghava, that the soul is a slight stirring of brahman, like the stir of an ocean where there is no wind, or like the flicker of a lamp where there is no wind.

śāntatvāpagame'cchasya manāksaṃvedanātmakam | svābhāvikaṃ yatsphuraṇaṃ cidvyomnaḥ so'ṅga jīvakaḥ || 9 ||

When the peace of that pure being departs a little, the natural stirring of the sky of consciousness, which is slightly like a feeling, that, dear one, is the soul.

yathā vātasya calanaṃ kṛśānoruṣṇatā yathā | śītatā vā tuṣārasya tathā jīvatvamātmanaḥ || 10 ||

As moving is the nature of wind, as heat is the nature of fire, or as coldness is the nature of snow, so is the nature of being a soul for the self.

cidrūpasyātmatattvasya svābhāvavaśataḥ svayam | manāksaṃvedanamiva yattajjīva iti smṛtam || 11 ||

That which, by its own natural power, is like a slight feeling within the self whose true nature is consciousness, that is called the soul.

tadeva ghanasaṃvittyā yātyahaṃtāmanukramāt | vahnyaṇuḥ svenindhānādhikyātsvāṃ prakāśakatāmiva || 12 ||

That very soul, through thickened awareness, gradually reaches the state of I, like a spark of fire, through plenty of its own fuel, reaches its own full power to give light.

yathā svatārakāmārge vyomnaḥ sphurati nīlimā | śūnyasyāpyasya jīvasya tathāhaṃbhāvabhāvanā || 13 ||

As blueness appears in the sky along the path where its stars are, though the sky itself is empty, so the feeling of I appears in this soul, even though the soul too is empty.

jīvo'haṃkṛtimādatte saṃkalpakalayeddhayā | svayaitayā ghanatayā nīlimānamivāmbaram || 14 ||

The soul takes on the making of I through this intense force of imagining, by this very thickness, just as the sky takes on its blueness.

ahaṃbhāvo hi dikkālavyavacchedī kṛtākṛtiḥ | svayaṃ saṃkalpavaśato vātaspanda iva sphuran || 15 ||

The feeling of I indeed cuts space and time apart, is both made and unmade, and stirs on its own by the force of imagining, like the stirring of the wind.

saṃkalponmukhatā yātastvahaṃkārābhidhaḥ sthitaḥ | cittaṃ jīvo mano māyā prakṛtiśceti nāmabhiḥ || 16 ||

Having turned toward imagining, that same stirring, now called by the name ego, stands further under the names mind, soul, thought, illusion, and nature.

tatsaṃkalpātmakaṃ ceto bhūtatanmātrakalpanam | kurvaṃstato vrajatyeva saṃkalpādyāti pañcatām || 17 ||

That mind, whose nature is imagining, forms the subtle elements, and then, through further imagining, goes on to reach the state of the five gross elements.

tanmātrapañcakākāraṃ cittaṃ tejaḥkaṇo bhavet | ajātajagati vyomni tārakā pelavā yathā || 18 ||

The mind, taking the form of the five subtle elements, becomes a spark of light, like a faint star in a sky where the world has not yet been born.

tejaḥkaṇatvamādatte cittaṃ tanmātrakalpanāt | śanaiḥ svasmātparispandādbījamaṅkuratāmiva || 19 ||

The mind takes on the state of a spark of light through forming the subtle elements, slowly, by a stirring that comes out of itself, like a seed taking on the state of a sprout.

asau tejaḥkaṇo'ṇḍākhyaḥ kalpanātkacidaṇḍatām | prayātyantaḥsphuradbrahmā jalamāpiṇḍatāmiva || 20 ||

That spark of light, called the egg, through imagining, somehow reaches the state of an egg, with brahma shining within it, like water reaching the state of a solid lump.

kaściddrāgiti dehādikalanādyāti dehatām | bhrāntitvaṃ tadatadrūpaṃ gandharvaiśca vasatpuram || 21 ||

Someone, thinking let it be so right away, by shaping a body and the rest, reaches the state of having a body; this is a confusion, a form that is neither wholly real nor wholly unreal, like a city in the sky.

kaścitssthāvaratāmeti kaścijjangamatāmapi | kaścidyāti khacāryādirūpaṃ saṃkalpataḥ svataḥ || 22 ||

Someone reaches the state of an unmoving being, someone else the state of a moving being; someone, by his own imagining, reaches the form of a bird or the like, moving in the sky.

sargādāvādijo deho jīvaḥ saṃkalpasambhavaḥ | krameṇa padamāsādya vairiñcaṃ kurute jagat || 23 ||

At the start of creation, the body born first, the soul that arose out of imagining, gradually reaching that high position, makes the world as Brahma the creator.

ātmabhūkalanātmāsau yatsaṃkalpayati kṣaṇāt | tatsvabhāvavaśādeva jātameva prapaśyati || 24 ||

This one, whose nature is to fashion himself, whatever he imagines in an instant, he sees that very thing as already born, by the force of his own nature alone.

citsvabhāvātsamāyātaṃ brahmatvaṃ sarvakāraṇam | saṃsṛtau kāraṇaṃ paścātkarma nirmāya saṃsthitam || 25 ||

From the very nature of consciousness comes Brahman, the cause of everything. After that, in this cycle of birth and death, it makes karma the cause, and stays fixed there.

cittaṃ svabhāvātsphurati cittaḥ phena ivāmbhasaḥ | karmabhirbadhyate paścāḍḍiṇḍīramiva rajjubhiḥ || 26 ||

The mind arises on its own, by its own nature, like foam rising from water. Afterward it gets tied down by its own actions, the way a raft is tied together with ropes.

saṃkalpaḥ kalanābījaṃ tadātmaiva hi jīvakaḥ | karma paścāttanotyuccairutthāyākarmataḥ kramāt || 27 ||

Intention is the seed of all doing, and that very intention is the individual soul. Afterward, action spreads out and grows large, rising step by step out of a state where there was no action.

kroḍīkṛtāṅkuraṃ pūrvaṃ jīvo dhatte svajīvitam | paścānnānātvamāyāti patrāṅkuraphalakramaiḥ || 28 ||

At first, the individual soul holds its own life folded up inside itself, like a sprout held inside a seed. Afterward it becomes many, passing through the stages of leaf, shoot, and fruit.

anye sva eva ye jīvā evamevākṛtiṃ gatāḥ | pūrvotpanne jagati te yānti bhūtāśrayāṃ sthitim || 29 ||

Other souls too, which are really this same self, take shape in just this same way. In a world that has already come into being, they go and settle down, resting on the elements.

svakarmabhistato janmamṛtikāraṇatāṃ gataiḥ | prayāntyūrdhvamadhastādvā karma cittaspanda ucyate || 30 ||

Then, driven by their own actions, which become the cause of their birth and death, they go up or down. This action is called the vibration of consciousness.

citsapndana bhavati karma tadeva daivaṃ cittaṃ tadeva bhavatīha śubhāśubhādi | tasmājjaganti bhuvanāni bhavanti pūrvaṃ bhūtvā nijāṅgakusumāni tarorivādyāt || 31 ||

The vibration of consciousness becomes action; that same thing is called fate. That same thing becomes, here in this world, the mind, along with its good and bad tendencies. Because of this, the worlds and their regions come into being, appearing at first like a tree's own flowers growing out of its own body, from that very source.
