13.61.1

śrīrāma uvāca | ahaṃ jagaditi bhrāntiḥ parasmātkāraṇaṃ vinā | yathodeti tathā brahmannbhūyaḥ kathaya sādhu me || 1 ||

Rama said: Brahmin, tell me clearly once more how this illusion — that I am the world — arises, when there is no cause for it other than the Supreme.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | samastāḥ samataivāntāḥ saṃvido budhyate yataḥ | sarvathā sarvadā sarvaṃ sarvātmakamajastataḥ || 2 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Since all states of awareness are known to end, finally, in the same one thing, therefore everything, in every way and at all times, is of the nature of everything else, and is unborn.

sarvā hi śabdārthadṛśo brahmaivaaitāḥ pṛthag gatat | sarvārthaśabdārthakalārūpamāsāṃ na vidyate || 3 ||

All these — words, their meanings, and the things seen — are Brahman alone; they are not separate from it. The form made of all objects, words, and meanings does not exist apart from this Brahman.

kaṭakatvaṃ pṛthaghemasnastaraṅgatvaṃ pṛthagjalāt | yathā na saṃbhavatyevaṃ na jagatpṛthagīśvarāt || 4 ||

Just as a bracelet's being a bracelet cannot exist apart from gold, and a wave's being a wave cannot exist apart from water, in the same way the world cannot exist apart from the Lord.

eṣa eva jagadrūpaṃ jagadrūpaṃ tu neśvare | hemaiva kaṭakāditvaṃ kaṭakatvaṃ na hemani || 5 ||

It is He alone who is the form of the world, but the world's form does not exist in Him as a separate reality. In the same way, gold alone is the bracelet and so on, but being a bracelet is not something existing separately in gold.

yathāvayavino rūpamanekāvayavātmakam | tathā'navayavāyāstu citaḥ sarvātmakaṃ ca yat || 6 ||

Just as the form of a thing that has parts is made of many parts, in the same way, consciousness — though it has no parts — is of the nature of everything.

yattulyakālamakhilaṃ tanmātrāvedanaṃ pare | antasthaṃ tadidaṃ bhāti jagadityahamityapi || 7 ||

Whatever, all at the very same moment, exists in the Supreme as just that much of experience — that, standing within, appears as this is the world and also as I.

lekhaughānāṃ yathā bhedasaṃniveśaḥ śilodare | tathā'nanyajjagadahaṃ cetyantaściddhane ghanam || 8 ||

Just as many streaks of different lines are set inside a stone, without being separate from it, so too the world and I are not different from consciousness — they are packed together within the solid mass of consciousness.

sthitāstarangāḥ salile yathā'ntaratarangite | sṛṣṭiśabdārtharahitāstathā'ntaḥ sṛṣṭayaḥ pare || 9 ||

Just as waves stand within water that is itself rippling inside, without the word and the thing named wave being anything separate, in the same way, within the Supreme, all creations exist, but without the word creation meaning anything separate.

na sarge tiṣṭhati paraṃ sargastiṣṭhati no pare | avayavāvayavivatsattā'navayavaiḥstayoḥ || 10 ||

The Supreme does not exist as something apart within creation, and creation does not exist as something apart within the Supreme. Like a part and the whole it belongs to, the existence of the two is without any real separation into parts.

cidrūpeṇa svasaṃvittyā svacinmātraṃ vibhāvyate | svameva rūpahṛdayaṃ vātena spandanaṃ yathā || 11 ||

Through its own nature as awareness, by knowing itself, consciousness experiences itself as pure consciousness alone; its very form is its own essence — just as the wind's vibration is nothing but the wind itself.

tatkālameṣa śabdāṇuściccamatkārarūpadhṛk | cetate khamivaivāntaḥ saṃkalpa iva cetasā || 12 ||

At that same moment, this tiny seed of a word, carrying the wondrous form of consciousness, becomes aware within — like empty space, and like a thought arising in the mind.

tadevānilatāṃ vetti nijasattātmikāṃ svayam | antargatasparśarasāṃ pavanaspandatāmiva || 13 ||

That same consciousness itself knows, of its own being, the state of being air — the way wind's vibration carries within it the very feel and quality of touch.

tadevābhāsatāmeti nijasattātmikāṃ svayam | kośasthitāloklavāṃ tejaḥ pragaṭatāmiva || 14 ||

That same consciousness itself becomes, of its own being, the state of light and appearance — the way light that lay hidden as a tiny spark within a covering becomes visible and bright.

tadevaṃ jalatāṃ yāti nijasattātmikāṃ svayam | antaḥsthitāsvādalavāṃ salilaṃ dravatāmiva || 15 ||

In the same way, that same consciousness itself becomes, of its own being, the state of water — the way water's flowing nature carries within it a trace of taste.

tadedāvanitāṃ vetti svacittaiakātmatāmayīm | antaḥsthagandhatanmātrāmurvī sthairyakalāmiva || 16 ||

That same consciousness itself knows the state of being earth, one with its own awareness — the way the earth's steadiness carries within it the subtle trace of smell.

tulyakālanimeṣāṃśalakṣabhāgapratīti yat | nijaṃ vidaḥ prakacanaṃ tatsargaughaparamparā || 17 ||

Whatever is experienced within a fraction — a hundred-thousandth part — of a single moment's blink, all happening at once, that very shining-forth of awareness itself is the whole unbroken stream of creation.

śuddhaṃ sakṛtprabhātāntardṛśyamadhyamanāmayam | udayāstamayonmuktaṃ brahma tiṣṭhatyaniṣṭhitam || 18 ||

Pure, shining forth all at once, seen within, without beginning, middle, or end, free from illness, free from rising and setting — Brahman remains, without being fixed anywhere.

buddhaṃ sadapavargaṃ tatsasargamapi satsamam | abuddhaṃ sargarūpātma visargamapi tatsadā || 19 ||

When it is known, it is always liberation itself, and even while together with creation it remains just the same reality. When it is not known, it takes on the form of creation — yet even then it always remains beyond that outpouring.

cidrahma yadyathā yena budhyate svātmanātmani | tattattathā nu bhavati sarvaṃ sarvāṅgaśaktimat || 20 ||

Whatever, in whatever way, by whatever means, consciousness — which is Brahman — knows itself within itself, that indeed becomes exactly so, everything being capable of taking every form.

tatsatyaṃ cidvilāsatvānnityānubhavarūpataḥ | tadasatyaṃ manaḥ ṣaṣṭhātsarvākhyā nigataṃ yataḥ || 21 ||

It is real, because it is the play of consciousness and is of the nature of eternal experience. It is unreal, because — through the mind, the sixth sense — it comes out only as names for everything.

yathaitatsaraṇaṃ vāyau tathā sargaḥ sthitaḥ pare | asatkalpe'pi saṃkalpaḥ satye'saty iva api ca || 22 ||

Just as this flowing movement exists within the wind itself, so creation exists within the Supreme. Even though it is like something unreal — a mere thought or resolve — it appears, even within what is real, as if it were unreal.

anyarūpā yathānanyā tejasya alokatodare | tathā brahmaṇi viśvaśrīḥ satyāsatyātmikā citi || 23 ||

Just as something that seems to have another shape is not really different, existing within the light, inside its brightness, so too, within Brahman, the glory of the whole world, being of a nature both real and unreal, exists within consciousness.

anutkīrṇā yathā paṅke putrikā cātha dāruṇi | yathā varṇā maṣīkalkē tathā sargāḥ sthitāḥ parē || 24 ||

Just as an unmade doll already lies hidden in clay, or in wood, and just as letters already lie hidden in a lump of ink, in the same way, all creations lie within the Supreme.

ananyānyeva kacati brahmatattvam arusthale | asatyātmni satyeva trijagam mṛgatṛṣṇikā || 25 ||

The truth that is Brahman shines out as if it were many different things, the way water seems to shine in a desert that has none. The three worlds are unreal in themselves, yet they look real, exactly like a mirage.

brahmaṇā cinmayenātmā sargātmaiva vibhāvyate | na bhāvyate cānanyatvādbījena antariva drumah || 26 ||

The self, which is nothing but consciousness, that is Brahman, appears to turn into the world. But it does not really become anything else, because it is never different from Brahman, just as a tree is not different from the seed it lay hidden inside.

yathā kṣīrasya mādhuryaṃ tīkṣṇatvaṃ maricasya ca | dravatvaṃ payasaścaiva spandanaṃ pavanasya ca || 27 ||

Sweetness belongs to milk, sharpness belongs to pepper, fluidity belongs to water, and vibration belongs to the wind.

sthito'nanyo yathānyaḥ sannāsti tatra tathātmani | sargo nirgalacidrūpaḥ paramātmātmārūpabhṛt || 28 ||

In the same way, though it seems to stand apart, it is not different from the self it stands in. Creation, whose very nature is unbroken pure consciousness, carries the same form as the supreme self itself.

kacanaṃ brahmaratnasya jagadityeva yatsthitam | tadakāraṇakaṃ yasmāttena na vyatiricyate || 29 ||

What shines out as the world is simply the shine of the jewel that is Brahman. It has no cause of its own, and for that reason it is not separate from Brahman.

vāsanā cittajīvādivedanaṃ vedanoditam | noudetyavedanādeva yatanādeva pauruṣāt || 30 ||

Craving, the feeling of being a mind, being a separate living being, and so on, is born out of an earlier feeling. Where that feeling is absent, craving does not arise at all, and that absence comes only through effort, only through one's own real striving.

nāstameti na codeti kvacitkiṃcitkadācana | sarvaṃ śāntamajaṃ brahma ciddhanaṃ suśilāghanam || 31 ||

Nowhere, ever, at any time, does anything set or rise. All this is peaceful, unborn Brahman, a solid mass of pure consciousness, dense and firm like solid rock.

parāṇuṃ prati sargaughāścitādbhāntisahasraśaḥ | teṣvapyṇāvaṇāvantaḥ kaivātrāvāsanā katham || 32 ||

Within a single atom, countless floods of creation shine out of consciousness by the thousand, and within each of those atoms too there are more atoms nested inside. So what craving could there possibly be here, and how?

yathā jalānta ūrmyādyā guptāgusāśca śaktayaḥ | jāgratsvapnasuṣuptādyāstathā jīve'ntarāsthitāḥ || 33 ||

Just as waves and the like are powers hidden inside water, some showing and some not, in the same way waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and the rest lie hidden inside every living being.

jātā cedaratirjantorbhogānprati manāgapi | tadasau tāvataivoccaiḥ padaṃ prāpta iti śrutiḥ || 34 ||

If even a little dislike for worldly pleasures arises in a person, then by that much alone he has reached the highest state, so say the scriptures.

yato yato virajyate tatastato vimucyate | ato'hamityasaṃvidan ka eti janmasaṃvidam || 35 ||

From whatever a person turns away, from that very thing he becomes free. So one who no longer holds the thought I am this, who is left in him to come again to the experience of being born?

citiṃ parāparāmajāmarūpikāmanāmikām | carācarā'dharāmayīṃ vidanti ye jayanti te || 36 ||

Those who know pure consciousness, the highest and also the nearest, unborn, without shape, without name, the very foundation of everything that moves and everything that does not move, they are the ones who truly win.

pare citiḥ svaprakṭādvitīyāsvāvartalekheva jale dravāntaḥ | sāhaṃ tayemāni jaganti dhatte na santi nāsanti parātmakāni || 37 ||

In the supreme, consciousness shines by itself, with nothing else beside it, like the curved line of a whirlpool inside flowing water. That same consciousness, as I, holds up these worlds through itself, and since these worlds are nothing but the supreme self, they neither truly exist nor truly fail to exist.
