13.55.1

prabuddhalīlovāca yathaiva janturmriyate jāyate ca yathā punaḥ tanme kathaya deveśi punarbodhavivṛddhaye || 1 ||

Prabuddha Leela said: "Just as a living being dies, and how it is born again - tell me that, O queen of the gods, so my understanding grows further."

śrīdevyuvāca nāḍīpravāhe vidhure yadā vātavisaṃsthitim jantuḥ prāpnoti hi tadā śāmyatīvāsya cetanā || 2 ||

The goddess said: When the flow in the body's channels is disturbed, and the creature's life-breath falls into disorder, then its consciousness seems to quiet down.

śuddhaṃ hi cetanaṃ nityaṃ nodeti na ca śāmyati sthāvare jaṅgame vyomni śaile'gnau pavane sthitam || 3 ||

But pure consciousness is eternal - it never rises and it never quiets down. It stays the same in the unmoving and the moving, in the sky, in the mountain, in fire, and in the wind.

kevalaṃ vātasaṃrodhādyadā spandaḥ praśāmyati mṛta ityucyate dehas tadāsau jaḍanāmakaḥ || 4 ||

Only when the breath is blocked and the pulsing movement stops does the body get called "dead" - then it is given the name "inert."

tasmindehe śavībhūte vāte cānilatāṃ gate cetanaṃ vāsanāmuktaṃ svātmatattve'vatiṣṭhati || 5 ||

In that body, once it has become a corpse and the breath has turned to mere air, the consciousness - set loose, carrying its impressions with it - settles into its own true nature.

jīva ityucyate tasya nāmāṇorvāsanāvataḥ | tatraivāste sa ca śavāgāre gaganake tathā || 6 ||

That tiny consciousness carrying its impressions is called "jiva." It stays right there, in that small space in the room where the corpse lies.

tato'sau pretaśabdena procyate vyavahāribhiḥ | cetanaṃ vāsanāmiśramāmodānilavatsthitam || 7 ||

Then people in ordinary talk call it by the word "preta" (a departed spirit) - the consciousness mixed with its impressions, staying there like a scent carried in the breeze.

idaṃ dṛśyaṃ parityajya yadāste darśanāntare | sa svapna iva saṃkalpa iva nānākṛtistadā || 8 ||

When, leaving this visible world, it exists in another kind of seeing, then it takes many forms, like a dream, like a mere thought.

tasminneva pradeśe'ntaḥ pūrvavatsmṛtimānbhavet | tadaiva mṛtimūrcchānte paśyatyanyaśarīrakam || 9 ||

Right there, inside that same place, it keeps its memory as before; then, when the swoon of death ends, it sees another body of its own.

ātmanyasti ghaṭāpuṣṭamanyasya vyoma kevalam | ākāśabhūtale sākaṃ sākāśaśaśivāsaram || 10 ||

For itself there is a world like the space cupped inside a pot; for another there is only the open sky - together with the plane of earth and space, together with the sky, the moon, and the day.

bhavanti ṣaḍvidhāḥ pretāsteṣāṃ bhedamimaṃ śṛṇu | sāmānyapāpino madhyapāpinaḥ sthūlapāpinaḥ || 11 ||

Ghosts are of six kinds; hear this difference among them: those with an ordinary sin, those with a middling sin, those with a heavy sin -

sāmānyadharmā madhyamadharmā cottamadharmavān | eteṣāṃ kasyacidbhedo dvau trayo'pyatha kasyacit || 12 ||

those with ordinary merit, those with middling merit, and those with the best merit. Among these, for some the difference is of two kinds, and for some even of three kinds.

133.55.13

kaścinmahāpātakavānvatsaraṃ smṛtimūrcchanam | vimūḍho'nubhavatyantaḥ pāṣāṇahṛdayopamaḥ || 13 ||

Someone with a great sin, deluded, spends a year in a swoon in which memory still remains, inside, like a person whose heart has turned to stone.

tataḥ kālena saṃbuddho vāsanājaṭharoditam | anubhūya ciraṃ kālaṃ nārakaṃ duḥkhamakṣayam || 14 ||

Then, in time, he wakes up and experiences, for a long time, the endless suffering of hell that rises up from within his own impressions.

bhuktvā yoniśatānyuccaīrduḥkhāddduḥkhāntaraṃ gataḥ | kadācicchamamāyāti saṃsārasvapnasambhrame || 15 ||

Having gone through hundreds of wombs, passing hard from one suffering to another, he at some point finds peace, in this confusion that is the dream of worldly life.

athavā mṛtimohānte jaḍaduḥkhaśatākulām | kṣaṇādvṛkṣāditāmeva hṛtsthāmanubhavanti te || 16 ||

Or else, at the end of the delusion of death, they experience, right within their heart, in an instant, the state of being a tree or the like, full of hundreds of dull sufferings.

svavāsanānurūpāṇi duḥkhāni narake punaḥ | anubhūyātha yonīṣu jāyante bhūtale cirāt || 17 ||

Having again suffered in hell in ways that match their own impressions, they are then born, after a long time, in various wombs on the earth.

atha madhyamapāpo yo mṛtimohādanantaram | saśilājaṭharaṃ jāḍyaṃ kañcitkālaṃ prapaśyati || 18 ||

Now, the one of middling sin, right after the delusion of death, sees, for some time, a dullness as if shut inside a rock.

tataḥ prabuddhaḥ kālena kenacidvā tadaiva vā | tiryagādikramairbhukvā yonīḥ saṃsārameṣyati || 19 ||

Then, waking up after some time, or right away, he passes through wombs in the order of animals and so on, and enters worldly life.

mṛta evānubhavati kaścitsāmānyapātakī | svavāsanānusāreṇa dehaṃ saṃpannamakṣatam || 20 ||

Some ordinary sinner, right at the moment of death, experiences, in keeping with his own impressions, a body that feels whole and unbroken.

sa svapna iv saṃkalpa iv cetati tādṛśam| tasmineva kṣaṇe tasya smṛtiritthamudeti ca || 21 ||

He perceives it just like that, like a dream, like a mere thought; and in that very moment this memory rises in him.

ye tūttamamahāpuṇyā mṛtimohādanantaram| svargavidyādharapuraṃ smṛtyā svanubhavanti te || 22 ||

But those of the highest, great merit, right after the delusion of death, experience through memory, as their own, the city of heaven or of the celestial vidyadharas.

tato'nyakarmasadṛśaṃ bhuktvānyatra phalaṃ nijam| jāyante mānuṣe loke saśrīke sajjanaāspade || 23 ||

Then, having enjoyed elsewhere the fruit that belongs to their other deeds, they are born in the human world, in a prosperous place, the home of good people.

ye ca madhyamadharmāṇo mṛtimohādanantaram| te vyomavāyuvalitāḥ prayāntyoṣadhipallavam || 24 ||

And those of middling merit, right after the delusion of death, carried along by the sky and the wind, go to the sprout of a plant.

tatra cāruphalaṃ bhuktvā praviśya hṛdayaṃ nṛṇām| retasāmadhitiṣṭhanti garbhe jātikramocite || 25 ||

There, after enjoying that pleasant fruit, they enter the hearts of men and settle within the semen, in a womb fit for their due birth.

svavāsanānusāreṇa pretā etāṃ vyavasthitim| mūrcchānte'nubhavantyantaḥ krameṇaivākrameṇa ca|| 26||

According to their own inner tendencies, the departed experience this fixed order within themselves, at the end of unconsciousness, sometimes step by step and sometimes all at once.

udyānāni vimānāni śobhanāni punaḥpunaḥsvakarmabhirupāttāni divyānītyeva puṇyavān || 27 ||

The virtuous man thinks again and again, these lovely gardens and flying chariots, so divine, I have gained through my own good deeds.

tato yamabhaṭā ete kālapāśānvitā iti| nīyamānaḥ prayāmyebhiḥ krameṇa yamapuraṃ tviti|| 28||

Then he thinks, these are Yama's soldiers, carrying the noose of death; being led away by them, step by step I am going to Yama's city.

himānīkaṇṭakaśvabhraśastrapatravanāni ca| svakarmaduṣkṛtōtthāni saṃprāptānīti pāpavān|| 30||

The sinful man thinks, these stretches of ice, thorns, pits, and forests of sword-like leaves have come upon me, arisen from my own wicked deeds.

iyaṃ me saumyasaṃpātā saraṇiḥ śītaśādvalā| snigdhacchāyā savāpīkā puraḥsaṃstheti madhyamaḥ|| 31||

The man of middling deeds thinks, this path ahead of me is gentle, cool with grass, softly shaded, and has pools of water.

ayaṃ prāpto yamapuramahameṣa sa bhūtapaḥ | ayaṃ karmavicāro'tra kṛta ityanubhūtimān || 32 ||

The one who is going through this experience thinks, I have reached Yama's city, this is that lord of beings, here my deeds are being examined.

iti pratyekamabhyeti pṛthuḥ saṃsārakhṇḍakaḥ | yathāsaṃsthitaniḥśeṣapadārthācārabhāsuraḥ || 33 ||

In this way each one, on their own, arrives at a large piece of this cycle of birth and death, shining with everything arranged exactly as it stands, all things and all actions.

ākāśa iva niḥśūnye śūnyātmaiva vibodhavān | deśakālakriyādairghyabhāsuro'pi na kiṃcana || 34 ||

Like the sky, empty yet not truly empty, the awakened self alone is real; even though it seems to shine spread out over place, time, and action, it is actually nothing at all.

ito'yamahamādiṣṭaḥ svakarmaphalabhojane | gacchāmyāśu śubhaṃ svargamito narakameva ca || 35 ||

From here I am directed to enjoy the fruit of my own deeds; now I go quickly, from here either to a good heaven or else to hell.

yaḥ svargo'yaṃ mayā bhukto bhukto'yaṃ narako'tha vā | imāstā yonayo bhukta jāye'haṃ saṃsṛtau punaḥ || 36 ||

This heaven I have enjoyed, or this hell I have suffered; these many wombs I have already gone through; now I am born again into this round of birth and death.

ayaṃ śālirahaṃ jātaḥ kramātphalamahaṃ sthitaḥ | ityudarkaprabodhena budhyamāno bhaviṣyati || 37 ||

I was born as this very rice plant, in time I now stand as its grain - understanding this through a later awakening, he comes to know it.

saṃsuptakaraṇastvevaṃ bījatāṃ yātyasau nare tadbījaṃ yonigalitaṃ garbho bhavati mātari || 38 ||

With his senses thus completely asleep, he becomes a seed inside a man; that seed, released into the womb, becomes an embryo in the mother.

sa garbho jāyate loke pūrvakarmānusārataḥ | bhavyo bhavatyabhavyo vā bālako lalitākṛtiḥ || 39 ||

That embryo is born into the world according to its past deeds; the child, with a graceful shape, turns out fortunate or unfortunate.

tato'nubhavatīndvābhaṃ yauvanaṃ madanounmukham | tato jarāṃ padmamukhe himāśanimiva cyutam || 40 ||

Then he goes through youth, bright as the moon, turned toward desire; then old age falls on his lotus-like face like frost and hail falling.

tato'pi vyādhimaraṇaṃ punarmaraṇamūrcchanām | punaḥ svapnavadāyātaṃ piṇḍairdehaparigraham || 41 ||

Then comes sickness and death, and again the swoon of dying; then again, as if in a dream, comes the taking up of a body made of flesh.

yāmyaṃ yāti punarlokaṃ punareva bhramakramam | bhūyo bhūyo'nubhavati nānāyonyantarodaye || 42 ||

He goes again to Yama's world, again into the same round of wandering; again and again he goes through this, rising up in one womb after another.

ityājavaṃ javībhāvamāmokṣamatibhāsuram | bhūyo bhūyo'nubhavati vyomnyeva vyomarūpavān || 43 ||

So, being made of space while remaining within space, he experiences this swiftly rushing state, very bright, again and again, all the way up to liberation.

prabuddhalīlovāca | ādisarge yathā devi bhrama eṣa pravartate | tathā kathaya me bhūyaḥ prasādādvodhavṛddhaye || 44 ||

The awakened Lila said, o goddess, tell me again, out of your kindness, so that my understanding grows, how this same confusion has been going on since the very beginning of creation.

śrīdevyuvāca | paramārthaghanaṃ śailāḥ paramārthaghanaṃ drumāḥ | paramārthaghanaṃ pṛthvī paramārthaghanaṃ nabhaḥ || 45 ||

The blessed goddess said, the mountains are solid with the highest reality, the trees are solid with the highest reality, the earth is solid with the highest reality, the sky is solid with the highest reality.

sarvātmakatvātsa yato yathodeti cidīśvaraḥ | paramākāśaśuddhātmā tatra tatra bhavettathā || 46 ||

Because he is the self of everything, wherever and however the lord of consciousness rises, the pure self, like the highest space, becomes exactly that, in that very place.

sargādau svapnapuruṣanyāyenādiprajāpatiḥ | yathā sphuṭaṃ prakacitastathādyāpi sthitā sthitiḥ || 47 ||

At the start of creation, following the logic of a man in a dream, the first lord of creatures appeared, clearly manifest, and the very same state still stands today, just as it did then.

prathamo'sau pratispandaḥ padārthānāṃ hi bimbakam | pratibimbitemetasmādyattadadyāpi saṃsthitam || 48 ||

That first stirring is indeed the original model of all things, and whatever was reflected from it stands exactly the same even today.

yannāma suṣiraṃ sthānaṃ dehānāṃ tadgato'nilaḥ | karotyaṅgaparispandaṃ jīvatītyucyate tataḥ || 49 ||

Whatever hollow space there is in bodies, the air moving through it makes the limbs move, because of this, one is said to be alive.

sargādāvevamevaiṣā jaṅgameṣu sthitā sthitiḥ | cetanā api niḥspandāste naite pādapādayaḥ || 50 ||

In the same way, this same condition existed in moving beings right from the start of creation. They were conscious, but without any movement -- yet they were not like trees and plants.

cidākāśo'yamevāṃśaṃ kurute cetanoditam | sa eva saṃvidbhavati śeṣaṃ bhavati naiva tat || 51 ||

This space of consciousness turns one part of itself into what looks like an arising awareness. Only that part becomes this knowing awareness; the rest of it never becomes that.

naropādhipuraṃ prāptaṃ cetatyakṣipuṭaṃ nayat tattasyā nākṣicijjīvaṃ no jīvatyeva sargataḥ || 52 ||

When awareness reaches the human body as its base, it becomes conscious and moves the eyes. But that awareness of the eye is not life itself; the body does not truly live just because it was born.

tathā khaṃ khaṃ tathā bhūmirbhūmitvenāptvavajjalam yadyathā cetati svairaṃ tadvettyeva tathā vapuḥ || 53 ||

In the same way, space is aware as space, earth is aware as earth, water is aware as water, each in its own nature. Whatever a thing is aware of, in its own way, its body knows itself in exactly that way.

iti sarvaśarīreṇa jaṅgamatvena jaṅgamam sthāvaraṃ sthāvaratvena sarvātmā bhāvayan sthitaḥ || 54 ||

So it is that, in every kind of body, the moving being knows itself as moving, and the unmoving thing knows itself as unmoving. The one self of all remains, feeling itself this way in every form.

tasmādyajjaṅgamaṃ nāma tatsvabodhanarūpavat tena buddhaṃ tatastadbattaddevādyāpi saṃsthitam || 55 ||

Therefore, what is called 'a moving being' has the very form of self-awareness; by that it is known as living. So that same thing remains exactly as it was, even today.

yadvṛkṣābhidhamābuddhaṃ sthāvaratvena vai punaḥ jaḍamadyāpi saṃsiddhaṃ śilātarutṛṇādi ca || 56 ||

And what is called 'tree' is known through its being unmoving. Stone, tree, grass, and things like these remain fixed as lifeless in that same way even today.

na tu jāḍyaṃ pṛthakkiṃcidasti nāpi ca cetanam | nātra bhedo'sti sargādau sattāsāmānyakena ca || 57 ||

But there is no such thing as lifelessness existing separately, and there is no consciousness existing separately either. Right from the start of creation, there is no real difference between them -- in their basic existence they are the same.

vṛkṣāṇāmupalānāṃ yā nāmāntaḥsthāḥ svasaṃvidaḥ | buddhyādivihitānyeva tāni teṣāmiti sthitiḥ || 58 ||

Trees and stones have their own inner awareness. That awareness is made of intellect and the rest, just as ours is -- that is simply how it stands for them.

vidontaḥsthāvarāderyāstasyā buddhyāstathā sthiteḥ | anyābhidhānāsthānārthāḥ saṃketairaparaiḥ sthitāḥ || 59 ||

The inner awareness inside an unmoving thing like a stone or a plant, and its way of knowing, do exist too -- but under other names, in other places, described by different words than the ones we use.

kṛmikīṭapataṅgānāṃ yā nāmāntaḥsvasaṃvidaḥ | tānyeva teṣāṃ buddhyādīnyabhidhārthāni kānicit || 60 ||

Worms, insects, and flying insects also have their own inner awareness. That awareness is their intellect and the rest, just called by some other names.

yathottarābdhijanatā dakṣiṇābdhijanaṃ sthitam | na kiṃcidapi jānāti nijasaṃvedanādṛte || 61 ||

It is like this: people living by the northern ocean know nothing at all about people living by the southern ocean, except through their own awareness of themselves.

svasaṃjñānubhave līnāstathā sthāvarajaṅgamāḥ | parasparaṃ yadā sarve svasaṃketaparāyaṇāḥ || 62 ||

In the same way, all unmoving and moving things stay absorbed only in their own experience of themselves, since toward one another, all of them follow only their own private way of sensing.

yathā śilāntaḥsaṃsthānāṃ bahiṣṭhānāṃ ca vedanam | asajjaḍaṃ ca bhekānāṃ mitho'ntastasthuṣāṃ tathā || 63 ||

It is like this: the awareness of something living inside a stone and the awareness of something living outside it seem, to each other, as if it does not exist at all, as if lifeless. It is the same between frogs living side by side -- each one's awareness is hidden from the other.

sarvaṃ sarvagataṃ cittaṃ cidvyomnā yatpracetitam | sargādau copanaṃ vāyuḥ sa ihādyāpi saṃsthitaḥ || 64 ||

Mind is present everywhere, and everything is made aware by the space of consciousness. The wind that stirred it at the start of creation is the same wind still present here today.

cetitaṃ yattu sauṣiryaṃ tannabhastatra mārutaḥ | spandātmetyādisargehāḥ padārtheṣviva copanam || 65 ||

That hollow space which is felt is simply empty space, and the wind is there within it, moving by its own nature. This has been present in things since the very start of creation, just as it is now.

cittaṃ tu paramārthena sthāvare jaṅgame sthitam | copanānyanilaireva bhavanti na bhavanti ca || 66 ||

But in truth, mind is present equally in unmoving things and in moving things. It is only because of the movement of the wind that something comes to be called living, or comes to be called not living.

evaṃ bhrāntimaye viśve padārthāḥ saṃvidaṃśavaḥ | sargādiṣu yathaivāsaṃstathaivādyāpi saṃsthitāḥ || 67 ||

So, in this world built on illusion, every single thing is just a ray of awareness. They remain today exactly as they were at the very start of creation.

yathā viśvapadārthānāṃ svabhāvasya vijṛmbhitam | asatyameva satyābhaṃ tadetatkathitaṃ tava || 68 ||

So this is what I have told you: the whole display of the world's things and their nature is unreal, even though it looks real.

ayamastaṃ gataḥ prāyaḥ paśya rājā vidūrathaḥ | mālāśavasya padmasya patyuste yāti hṛdgatam || 69 ||

Look, this King Vidūratha has almost set, like the sun. He is your husband Padma, and now, a corpse wreathed in garlands, he is passing into your heart.

prabuddhalīlovāca kena mārgeṇa deveśi yātyeṣa śavamaṇḍapam | enamevāśu paśyantyāvāvāṃ gacchāv uttame || 70 ||

The awakened Lila said, 'O goddess, by which path does he go to the funeral place? Let the two of us go quickly and watch him all the way there, to that same best place.'

śrīdevyuvāca manuṣyavāsanāntasthaṃ mārgamāśritya gacchati | eṣo'hamaparaṃ lokaṃ dūraṃ yāmīti cinmayaḥ || 71 ||

The goddess said, 'He travels by the path that lies inside a human being's own inner impressions. Being nothing but consciousness, he thinks, "I am going far away, to another world," and so he goes.'

mārgeṇaivamanenaiva yāvasteyena saṃmatam | parasparēcchāvicchittirna hi sauhārdabandhanī || 72 ||

Let us go, then, by this same path, quietly, as we have agreed between us. To cut off each other's wish like this is not what the bond of true friendship means.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti vihitakathāgataklamāyāṃ paramadṛśi prasṛte vibodhabhānau | nṛpativarasutāmanasyudāre vigalitacittajaḍo vidūratho'bhūt || 73 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, 'So, when this fitting story had been told to its end, and the sun of awakening had spread through the highest vision, King Vidūratha's dull, clouded mind dissolved into the noble mind of that fine king's daughter.'
