13.20.1

The goddess said: The brahmin who is your husband has today become a king. And the brahmin woman named Arundhati - that is you, dear woman.

ihemaū kuruto rājyaṃ tau bhavantau sudampatī | cakravākāviva navau bhuvi jātau śivāviva || 2 ||

Here in this world these two rule a kingdom. You two are a loving couple, like a pair of chakravaka birds, freshly born on this earth, both blessed and auspicious.

eṣa te kathitaḥ sarvaḥ prāktanaḥ saṃsṛtikramaḥ | bhrāntimātrakamākāśamevaṃ jīvasvarūpadhṛk || 3 ||

This is the whole story of your past life and rebirth that has been told to you. In this way empty space, which is nothing but delusion, takes on the form of a living being.

bhramādasmāccidākāśe bhramo'yaṃ pratibimbitaḥ | asatya eva vā satyo bhavatorbhava bhaṅgadaḥ || 4 ||

Out of this delusion, this same delusion is reflected inside the space of consciousness. Whether it is unreal or real, it is what breaks apart the worldly existence of both of you.

tasmādbhāntimayaḥ kaḥ syātkovā bhrāntyujjhito bhavetsargo nirargalānarthabodhānnānyo vijṛmbhate || 5 ||

So who could really be made of delusion, and who could be free of delusion? Creation is nothing but this endless false understanding unfolding on its own; nothing else grows out of it.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaityākarṇya ciraṃ cāru vismayotphullalocanābhūtvovāca vaco līlā līlālasapadākṣaram || 6 ||

Vasishtha said: Having listened to this for a long time, lovely Lila, her eyes wide open with wonder, spoke words whose every syllable was soft and playful.

līlovācadevi bhostvadvaco mithyā kathaṃ saṃpannamīdṛśamkva viprajīvaḥ svagṛhe kveme vayamiha sthitāḥ || 7 ||

Lila said: Goddess, how can your words turn out to be untrue like this? Where is my husband's soul, in his own house as a brahmin, and where are we, sitting here?

tādṛglokāntaraṃ sā bhūste śailāstā diśo daśakathaṃ bhānti gṛhasyāntarmadbhartā yeṣvavasthitaḥ || 8 ||

That other world of yours, that earth, those mountains, those ten directions - how can they all shine there, inside a house, the very house where my husband is now living?

matta airāvato baddhaḥ sarṣapasyeva koṭaremaśakena kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ siṃhaughairaṇukoṭare || 9 ||

It is like tying a rutting elephant, Airavata, inside the hollow of a mustard seed; like a mosquito fighting a war against whole armies of lions inside the hollow of a speck of dust.

padmākṣe sthāpito merurnigīrṇo bhṛṅgasūnunāsvapnābdagarjitaṃ śrutvā citraṃ nṛtyanti barhiṇaḥ || 10 ||

It is like Mount Meru being placed inside a lotus and swallowed by a tiny bee's young one; like peacocks dancing in wonder on hearing the strange thunder of a cloud in a dream.

asamañjasamevaitadyathā sarveśvareśvari | tathā gṛhāntaḥ pṛthivī śailāścetyasamañjasam || 11 ||

Just as all these things are completely improper and impossible, O queen of all lords, in the same way it is impossible for the earth and mountains to be inside a house.

yathāvadetaddedeśi kathayāmalayā dhiyā | prasādānugṛhīte hi nodvijante mahaujasaḥ || 12 ||

Tell me this properly, goddess, with a clear and honest mind. Those who have received your grace, the truly great, do not become troubled.

śrīdevyuvāca | nāhaṃ mithyā vadāmīdaṃ yathāvacchṛṇu sundari | bhedanaṃ niyatīnāṃ hi kriyate nāsmadādibhiḥ || 13 ||

The goddess said: I am not speaking a lie. Listen properly, beautiful one. Even people like me do not break the fixed laws of how things work.

vibhidyamānāmanyena sthāpayāmyahameva yām | maryādāṃ tāṃ mayā bhinnāṃ ko'paraḥ pālayiṣyati || 14 ||

When that boundary is broken by someone else, I am the one who restores it. But if I myself break that boundary, who else would there be to guard it?

sagrāmadvijajīvātmā tasmineva svasadmani | vyomnyevedaṃ mahārāṣṭraṃ vyomātmaiva prapaśyati || 15 ||

The living soul of the brahmin, together with his village, is right there in his own home. This whole great kingdom exists within space itself, and that soul, being itself made of space, sees it.

prāktanī sā smṛtirluptā yuvayoruditānyathāsvapne jāgratsmṛtiryadvadetanmaraṇamaṅgane || 16 ||

Your two old memories are lost, and other, different ones have come up in their place - just as in a dream the memory of waking life is lost. This, dear woman, is what death is.

yathā svapne tribhuvanaṃ saṃkalpe trijagadyathāyathā kathārthasaṃgrāmo marubhūmau jalaṃ yathā || 17 ||

It is like the three worlds appearing in a dream, like the three worlds appearing in a thought or an imagined idea, like a war that is real only inside the words of a story, like water appearing in a desert that is really a mirage.

tasya brāhmaṇagehasya saśailavanapattanāiyamantaḥ sthitā bhūmiḥ saṃkalpādarśayoriva || 18 ||

This earth, with its mountains, forests and cities, stands inside that brahmin's house, just as an image stands inside an imagined thought or inside a mirror.

asatyaiveyamābhāti satyeva ghanasargatātasmātsatyāvabhāsasya cidvyomnaḥ kośakoṭare || 19 ||

Though it is completely unreal, this appears as if it were real, as a solid, fixed creation - because it lies inside the small hollow chamber of the space of consciousness, which itself shines forth as if it were real.

asatyādyatsamutpannaṃ smṛtyā nāma tadapyasatmṛgatṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇyāṃ taraṅgo'pi na sadyataḥ || 20 ||

Whatever arises out of the unreal, and is held only by memory, is itself unreal too - just as a wave in the flowing river of a mirage was never real to begin with.

idaṃ tvadīyaṃ sadanaṃ tadgehākāśakośagamviddhi māṃ tvāṃ ca sarvaṃ ca taccidvyomaiva kevalam || 21 ||

This house of yours lies inside the space enclosed within that brahmin's house. Know that I, you, and everything else are nothing but that one space of consciousness.

svapnasambhramasankalpasvānubhūtiparamparāḥ | pramāṇānyatra mukhyāni saṃbodhāya pradīpavat || 22 ||

Dreams, sudden confusion, imagined thoughts, and the endless chain of one's own inner experiences - these are the main proofs here, and they work like a lamp to bring understanding.

sthito brāhmaṇagehāntardvijajīvastadambaresasamudravanā pṛthvī sthitābja iva ṣaṭpadaḥ || 23 ||

The brahmin's living soul stays inside the brahmin's house, within its own space. There, the earth, with its oceans and forests, rests like a bee settled on a lotus.

tasyāḥ kasmiṃścidekasminpelave koṇakoṭareidaṃ pattanadehādi keśoṇḍraka ivāmbare || 24 ||

And inside some one small, soft corner of that earth, this city, this body, and everything else exists, like one tiny strand of hair floating in the sky.

tasminnasminpure tanvi tadeva sadanaṃ sthitamtasmātkiṃ trasareṇvantarjagadvṛndamiva sthitam || 25 ||

In that city and in this city, O slender one, the same house stands. So can it be that within one tiny grain of dust many worlds exist?

paramāṇau paramāṇau santi vatse cidātmaniantarantarjagantīti kiṃtvetannāma śaṅkyate || 26 ||

In every single atom, O child, within pure awareness itself, worlds exist within worlds. But this very idea should be questioned, not simply believed.

līlovācaaṣṭame divase vipraḥ sa mṛtaḥ parameśvarigato varṣagaṇo'smākaṃ mātaḥ kathamidaṃ bhavet || 27 ||

Lila said: On the eighth day that Brahmin died, O highest goddess. But for us so many years have gone by, mother - how can this be?

śrīdevyuvācadeśadairghyaṃ yathā nāsti kāladairghyaṃ tathāṅganenāstyeveti yathānyāyaṃ kathyamānaṃ mayā śṛṇu || 28 ||

The goddess said: Just as length of distance is not really there, so too length of time is not really there, O lady. Listen, I will explain this to you properly, the right way.

yathaitatpratibhāmātraṃ jagatsargāvabhāsanamtathaitatpratibhāmātraṃ kṣaṇakalpāvabhāsanam || 29 ||

Just as this whole creation of the world is only an appearance in awareness, so too a moment stretching out into an age is only an appearance in awareness.

kṣaṇakalpaṃ jagatsarvaṃ tvattāmattātmajanmanāmyathāvatpratibhāsasya vakṣye kramamimaṃ śṛṇu || 30 ||

For those such as you, born of an intoxicated sense of self, the whole world lasts only a moment, or an age - it is the same thing. Now I will tell you, just as it happens, the order in which this appearance rises. Listen.

anubhūya kṣaṇaṃ jīvo mithyāmaraṇamūrcchanamvismṛtya prāktanaṃ bhāvamanyaṃ paśyati suvrate || 31 ||

The living being feels, for a moment, a false fainting like death; then, forgetting its earlier state, it sees something else, O good and faithful one.

tadevonmeṣamātreṇa vyomnyeva vyomarūpyapiādheyo'yamihādhāre sthito'hamiti cetati || 32 ||

That same awareness, though itself like open space, the moment it opens its eyes within another space, thinks: I am something held, placed here, resting on this support.

hastapādādimāndeho mamāyamiti paśyatiyadeva cetati vapustadevedaṃ sa paśyati || 33 ||

It sees: This body with hands, feet, and the rest is mine. Whatever body it thinks of, that very body it then sees.

etasyāhaṃ pituḥ putro varṣāṇyetāni santi meime me bāndhavā ramyā mamedaṃ ramyamāspadam || 34 ||

I am the son of this father, these are my years, these are my dear relatives, this pleasant place is mine.

jāto'hamabhavaṃ bālo vṛddhiṃ yāto'hamīdṛśaḥbāndhavāścāsya me sarve tathaiva vicarantyamī || 35 ||

I was born, I was a child, I grew up to be as I am now - and all these relatives of mine move about in just the same way.

cittākāśaghanaikatvātsve'pyanye'pi bhavanti teevaṃ nāmodite'pyasya citte saṃsārakhaṇḍake || 36 ||

Because mind and space are one solid thing, these people are both one's own and also others'. In this way, though it has arisen only as a name, it still seems real in the mind, in this small piece of worldly life.

na kiṃcidapyabhyuditaṃ sthitaṃ vyomaiva nirmalamsvapne draṣṭari yadvaccittadvaddṛśye cideva sā || 37 ||

Nothing at all has really arisen; only pure, empty space remains. Just as in a dream the one who sees is nothing but awareness, so too in the thing seen, that same awareness alone is present.

sarvagaikatayā yasmātsā svapne dṛṣṭadarśanāyathā svapne tathodeti paralokadṛgādibhiḥ || 38 ||

Because that awareness is one and reaches everywhere, it appears as something seen in a dream. Just as in a dream, so too it rises through the sight and other senses of the next world.

paraloke yathodeti tathaivehābhyudeti sātatsvapnaparalokeha lokānāmasatāṃ satām || 39 ||

As it rises in the next world, so it rises here too. So in a dream, in the next world, and here, it is the same for the worlds people call unreal or real.

na manāgapi bhedo'sti vīcīnāmiva vāriṇiato jātamidaṃ viśvamajātatvādanāśi ca || 40 ||

There is not even the smallest difference between them, just as there is none between waves and water. So this world, though it seems born, is really unborn, and for that reason it does not die.

svarūpatvāttu nāstyeva yacca bhāti cideva sāyathaiva cetyanirhīṇā paramavyomarūpiṇī || 41 ||

By its own nature it does not exist at all; whatever appears is awareness alone. Just as it is perceived, it stays whole and undiminished, in the form of the highest, empty space.

sacetyāpi tathaivaiṣā paramavyomarūpiṇītasmāccetyamato nānyadvīcitvādīva vāritaḥ || 42 ||

Even as the thing that is seen, this same awareness is, in the same way, the form of the highest, empty space. So the thing seen is nothing other than awareness - just as a wave is nothing other than water.

vīcitvaṃ ca rase nāsti śaśaśṛṅgavadeva hisaiva cetyamivāpannā svabhāvādacyutāpyalam || 43 ||

And in the true nature of water there is no such thing as a wave, just as there is no such thing as a hare's horn. That same awareness has merely taken on the appearance of an object seen, while by its own nature it remains completely unchanged.

tasmānnāstyeva dṛśyo'rthaḥ kuto'to draṣṭṛdṛśyadhīḥnimiṣeṇaiva jīvasya mṛtimohādanantaram || 44 ||

So there is no seen thing at all - then how could there be any idea of a seer and a thing seen? This happens for the living being in the blink of an eye, right after the delusion of death.

trijagaddṛśyasargaśrīḥ pratibhāmupagacchatiyathādeśaṃ yathākālaṃ yathārambhaṃ yathākramam || 45 ||

The splendour of the visible creation of the three worlds comes into view according to its place, according to its time, according to its beginning, according to its order.

yathotpādaṃ yathāmātṛ yathāpitṛ yathaurasamyathāvayo yathāsaṃvidyathāsthānaṃ yathehitam || 46 ||

According to its birth, according to its mother, according to its father, according to being someone's own child, according to age, according to its knowledge, according to its place, according to its own effort.

yathābandhu yathābhṛtyaṃ yathehāstamayodayamajāta eva jāto'hamiti cetati cidvapuḥ || 47 ||

According to kinsman, according to servant, according to setting and rising here in this world - embodied awareness, though truly unborn, thinks: I am born.

deśakālakriyādravyamanobuddhīndriyādi cajhaṭityeva mṛterante vapuḥ paśyati yauvane || 48 ||

Place, time, action, things, mind, intellect, the senses, and the rest - suddenly, right after death, it sees a body, and that too in youth.

eṣā mātā pitā hyeṣa bālo'bhūvamahaṃ tvitinānubhūto'nubhūto vā yaḥ syātsmṛtimayaḥ kramaḥ || 49 ||

When someone says, 'this is my mother, this is my father, I was a child once,' it makes no difference whether these things were truly experienced or not experienced at all — whatever we call experience is only a chain made of memory.

paścādudetyasau tasya puṣpasyeva phalodayaḥnimiṣeṇaiva me kalpo gata ityanubhūyate || 50 ||

That comes afterward, the way fruit appears after a flower. In just the blink of an eye, it feels as if a whole age of my life has gone by.

rātrirdvādaśavarṣāṇi hariścandre tathā hyabhūt | kāntāvirahiṇāmekaṃ vāsaraṃ vatsarāyate | || 51 ||

For king Harishchandra, a single night became twelve years. For someone separated from their beloved, a single day feels like a whole year.

mṛto jāto'hamanyo me piteti svapnatāsviva | abhuktasyaiva bhogasya bhuktadhīrupa jāyate | || 52 ||

'I died, I was born, someone else became my father' — this happens just as it does in dreams: the feeling of having enjoyed something arises even for an enjoyment that was never actually had.

'मैं मर गया, मैं फिर पैदा हुआ, कोई और मेरा पिता बन गया' — यह वैसे ही होता है जैसे सपने में होता है: जिस भोग को असल में भोगा ही नहीं गया, उसे भी भोगने का एहसास हो जाता है।

533.20.53

bhukte'pyabhuktadhīrdṛṣṭamityalaṅkitavādiṣu | śūnyamākīrṇatāmeti tulyaṃ vyasanamutsavaiḥ | vipralambho'pi lābhaśca madasvapnādisaṃvidi | || 53 ||

Even something that was really enjoyed can feel as if it was never enjoyed at all — skilled speakers point this out. In such a state of mind, an empty place can feel crowded, hardship can feel no different from a celebration, and even a loss can feel like a gain — this happens in states like intoxication and dreaming.

taikṣṇyaṃ yathā maricabījakaṇe sthitaṃ svaṃ stambheṣu cāracitaputrakajālamantaḥ | dṛśyaṃ tv ananyadidamevamaje'sti śāntaṃ tasyāstibandhanavimokṣadṛśaḥ kutaḥ kāḥ | || 54 ||

Just as sharpness lives naturally inside a grain of pepper, and just as a set of carved figures sits inside wooden pillars, in the same way this visible world is not separate from that unborn, peaceful reality — it exists within it. For that reality, what view of bondage or freedom could there possibly be, and from where?
