श्रीदेव्युवाच । वित्तवेषवयःकर्मविद्याविभवचेष्टितैः । वसिष्ठस्यैव सदृशो नतु वासिष्ठचेष्टितः ॥ १ ॥
śrīdevyuvāca | vittaveṣavayḥkarmavidyāvibhavaceṣṭitaiḥ | vasiṣṭhasyaiva sadṛśo natu vāsiṣṭhaceṣṭitaḥ || 1 ||
Goddess Devi said: in wealth, looks, age, deeds, learning and worldly success he was just like the sage Vasishtha, but not in the way a true Vasishtha behaved.
देवी ने कहा, धन, रूप, उम्र, कामों, विद्या और वैभव में वह बिलकुल वसिष्ठ जैसा ही था, पर वसिष्ठ जैसा आचरण उसमें नहीं था।
वसिष्ठ इति नाम्नासौ तस्याभूदिन्दुसुन्दरी । नाम्ना त्वरुन्धती भार्या भूमिव्योमन्यरुन्धती ॥ २ ॥
vasiṣṭha iti nāmnāsau tasyābhūdindusundarī | nāmnā tvārundhatī bhāryā bhūmivyomanyarundhatī || 2 ||
This man was named Vasishtha, and his wife was beautiful as the moon. Her name was Arundhati, and she was as rare on earth as the star Arundhati is in the sky.
इस आदमी का नाम वसिष्ठ था, और उसकी पत्नी चाँद जैसी सुंदर थी। उसका नाम अरुंधती था, और वह धरती पर वैसी ही दुर्लभ थी जैसे आकाश में अरुंधती तारा है।
वित्तवेषवयःकर्मविद्याविभवचेष्टितैः । समैव साप्यरुन्धत्या नतु चेतनसत्तया ॥ ३ ॥
vittaveṣavayḥkarmavidyāvibhavaceṣṭitaiḥ | samaiva sāpyarundhatyā natu cetanasattayā || 3 ||
In wealth, looks, age, deeds, learning and worldly success she too was equal to the true Arundhati, but not in the real quality of her inner awareness.
धन, रूप, उम्र, कामों, विद्या और वैभव में वह भी असली अरुंधती के बराबर थी, पर उसकी चेतना असली अरुंधती जैसी नहीं थी।
अकृत्रिमप्रेमरसा विलासालसगामिनी । सास्य संसारसर्वस्वमासीत्कुमुदहासिनी ॥ ४ ॥
akṛtrimapremarasā vilāsālasagāminī | sāsya saṃsārasarvasvamāsītkumudahāsinī || 4 ||
Her love was true, not put on; she walked with a slow and graceful gait and smiled like a white lotus. She was his entire world.

One day that brahmin was sitting on a grassy meadow on the ridge of that mountain, and he saw a king below.
एक दिन वह ब्राह्मण उस पहाड़ की चोटी पर घास के मैदान में बैठा था, और उसने नीचे एक राजा को देखा।
समग्रपरिवारेण यान्तमाखेटकेच्छया महता सैन्यघोषेण मेरोरिव बिभित्सया ॥ ६ ॥
samagraparivāreṇa yāntamākheṭakecchayā mahatā sainyaghoṣeṇa meroriva bibhitsayā || 6 ||
The king was going out with his whole retinue, wanting to hunt, and the noise of his great army was so loud it was as if he meant to shatter Mount Meru.
राजा अपने पूरे लाव-लश्कर के साथ शिकार खेलने निकला था, उसकी सेना का शोर इतना ज़ोर का था मानो वह मेरु पर्वत को तोड़ देना चाहता हो।
चामरैः कीर्णचन्द्रांशुपताकाभिर्लतावनम् कुर्वाणं खं सितच्छत्रमण्डलै रूप्यकुट्टिमम् ॥ ७ ॥
cāmaraiḥ kīrṇacandrāṃśupatākābhirlatāvanam kurvāṇaṃ khaṃ sitacchatramaṇḍalai rūpyakuṭṭimam || 7 ||
With whisks and banners white as moonbeams he turned the sky into a tangled forest of creepers; with rings of white umbrellas he made the ground look paved with silver.
चँवरों और चाँदनी जैसी सफ़ेद पताकाओं से उसने आकाश को लताओं के जंगल जैसा बना दिया; सफ़ेद छतरियों के घेरों से उसने ज़मीन को चाँदी से मढ़ी हुई दिखा दिया।
अश्वपादूस्वनत्क्ष्माजरेणुपूरावृताम्बरम् हास्तिकोत्तम्भितकरवाताट्टालकगोपितम् ॥ ८ ॥
aśvapādūsvanatkṣmājareṇupūrāvṛtāmbaram hāstikottambhitakaravātāṭṭālakagopitam || 8 ||
The dust raised by the thundering hooves of the horses covered the whole sky; the gusts from the raised trunks of the elephants screened it like the wall of a fort.
घोड़ों की गूँजती टापों से उठी धूल ने पूरे आकाश को ढँक दिया; हाथियों की उठी हुई सूँड़ों की हवा ने उसे किले की दीवार जैसा ढँक दिया।
महाकलकलावर्तद्रवद्दिग्भूतमण्डलम् कचत्काञ्चनमाणिक्यहारकेयूरमण्डलम् ॥ ९ ॥
mahākalakalāvartadravaddigbhūtamaṇḍalam kacatkāñcanamāṇikyahārakeyūramanḍalam || 9 ||
In that great uproar and turmoil the directions of the sky seemed to whirl and melt; everything gleamed with rings of gold and ruby necklaces and armlets.
उस भारी शोर-शराबे में दिशाएँ मानो घूमकर पिघल रही थीं; हर तरफ़ सोने और माणिक के हार और बाजूबंद चमक रहे थे।
तमालोक्य महीपालमिदं चिन्तितवानसौ अहो नु रम्या नृपता सर्वसौभाग्यभासिता ॥ १० ॥
tamālokya mahīpālamidaṃ cintitavānasaḥ aho nu ramyā nṛpatā sarvasaubhāgyabhāsitā || 10 ||
Seeing that king, the brahmin thought this: ah, how delightful kingship is, shining with every kind of good fortune!
उस राजा को देखकर ब्राह्मण ने सोचा, अहा, राजपद कितना सुखद है, हर तरह के सौभाग्य से चमकता हुआ।
पदातिरथहस्त्यश्वपताकाच्छत्रचामरैः । कदा स्यां दशदिक्कुञ्जपूरकोऽहं महीपतिः ॥ ११ ॥
padātirathahastyāśvapatākācchatracāmaraiḥ | kadā syāṃ daśadikkunjapūrako'haṃ mahīpatiḥ || 11 ||
With foot soldiers, chariots, elephants, horses, banners, umbrellas and whisks, when will I become a king who fills all ten directions?
पैदल सैनिकों, रथों, हाथियों, घोड़ों, पताकाओं, छतरियों और चँवरों के साथ, मैं कब ऐसा राजा बनूँगा जो दसों दिशाओं को भर दे?
कदा मे वायवः कुन्दमकरन्दसुगन्धयः । पास्यन्त्यन्तःपुरस्त्रीणां सुरतश्रमसीकरान् ॥ १२ ॥
kadā me vāyavaḥ kundamakarandasugandhayaḥ | pāsyantyantaḥpurastrīṇāṃ surataśramasīkarān || 12 ||
When will breezes, sweet with the honey of jasmine flowers, drink up the fine drops of sweat from the women of my palace, tired from lovemaking?
कब सुगंधित हवाएँ, जो चमेली के फूलों की मिठास से भरी हों, मेरी रनिवास की स्त्रियों के, प्रेम-क्रीड़ा से थकी हुई, पसीने की बूँदों को पी जाएँगी?
कर्पूरेण पुरन्ध्रीणां पूर्णेन यशसा दिशाम् । इन्दूदयावदातानि कदा कुर्यां मुखान्यहम् ॥ १३ ॥
karpūreṇa purandhrīṇāṃ pūrṇena yaśasā diśām | indūdayāvadātāni kadā kuryāṃ mukhānyaham || 13 ||
When, with the camphor of my women and with my fame filling every direction, shall I make the faces of the directions as bright as the rising moon?
कब मैं अपनी स्त्रियों के कपूर से और सब दिशाओं में फैली अपनी कीर्ति से, दिशाओं के मुख को उगते चाँद जैसा उजला बना दूँगा?
इत्थं ततःप्रभृत्येष विप्रः संकल्पवानभूत् । स्वधर्मनिरतो नित्यं यावज्जीवमतन्द्रितः ॥ १४ ॥
itthaṃ tataḥprabhṛtyeṣa vipraḥ saṃkalpavānabhūt | svadharmanirato nityaṃ yāvajjīvamatandritaḥ || 14 ||
From that day on, this brahmin kept holding this wish in his mind; yet he still stayed true to his own duty, always, tirelessly, for as long as he lived.
उस दिन से यह ब्राह्मण उस इच्छा को मन में लिए रहा; फिर भी वह जीवनभर बिना थके, हमेशा अपने धर्म में लगा रहा।
हिमाशनिरिवाम्भोजं जर्जरीकर्तुमादृता । जले जर्जरितेवाथ जरा द्विजमुपाययौ ॥ १५ ॥
himāśanirivāmbhojaṃ jarjarīkartumādṛtā | jale jarjaritevātha jarā dvijamupāyayau || 15 ||
Like frost bent on crushing a lotus until it withers even in the water, so old age came upon the brahmin.
जैसे पाला किसी कमल को मसल देने पर तुला हो और वह पानी में ही मुरझा जाए, वैसे ही बुढ़ापा उस ब्राह्मण पर आ गया।
आसन्नमरणस्याथ भार्या म्लानिमुपाययौ। तस्य शाम्यति पुष्पर्तौ लतेव ग्रीष्मभीतितः ॥ १६ ॥
āsannamaraṇasyātha bhāryā mlānimupāyayau| tasya śāmyati puṣpartau lateva grīṣmabhītitḥ || 16 ||
Then, as his death drew near, his wife grew pale and withered, like a creeper wilting in fear of the summer heat as its flowering season fades.
फिर, जब उसकी मृत्यु पास आई, उसकी पत्नी मुरझा गई, जैसे कोई लता गर्मी के डर से फूलों का मौसम बीतते ही कुम्हला जाती है।
मामथाराधितवती सा ततस्त्वमिवाङ्गना। अमरत्वं सुदुष्प्रापं बुद्ध्वेमं सावृणोद्वरम् ॥ १७ ॥
māmathārādhitavatī sā tatastvamivāṅganā| amaratvaṃ suduṣprāpaṃ buddhvemaṃ sāvṛṇodvaram || 17 ||
She then worshipped me, a woman like you, and knowing that immortality is very hard to attain, she chose this boon instead:
फिर उसने मेरी आराधना की, तुम्हारी ही तरह एक स्त्री ने, और यह जानकर कि अमरता पाना बहुत कठिन है, उसने यह वरदान चुना।
देवि स्वमण्डपादेव जीवो भर्तुर्मृतस्य मे। मायासीदित्यतस्तस्याः स एवाङ्गीकृतो मया ॥ १८ ॥
devi svamaṇḍapādeva jīvo bharturmṛtasya me| māyāsīdityatastasyāḥ sa evāṅgīkṛto mayā || 18 ||
"O Goddess, let the life of my dead husband stay right here, in my own home." That is what she asked, and I granted her exactly that.
हे देवी, मेरे मरे हुए पति का जीवन यहीं, मेरे अपने घर में ही रहे, उसने यही माँगा, और मैंने उसे वही दे दिया।
अथ कालवशाद्विप्रः स पञ्चत्वमुपाययौ। तस्मिन्नेव गृहाकाशे जीवाकाशतया स्थितः ॥ १९ ॥
atha kālavashādvipraḥ sa pañcatvamupāyayau| tasminneva gṛhākāśe jīvākāśatayā sthitaḥ || 19 ||
Then, in time, that brahmin died, and he stayed on in the very space of his house, as the space that was his living self.
फिर, समय आने पर, वह ब्राह्मण मर गया, और वह अपने घर के उसी आकाश में, अपने जीवन-रूप आकाश के रूप में बना रहा।
संपन्नः प्राक्तनानल्पसंकल्पवशतः स्वयम्। आकाशवपुरेवैष पतिः परमशक्तिमान् ॥ २० ॥
saṃpannaḥ prāktanānalpasankalpavaśataḥ svayam| ākāśavapurevaiṣa patiḥ paramaśaktimān || 20 ||
By the strength of his own great earlier wish, he himself became this, a being with a body of sky, a lord of supreme power.
अपनी ही पुरानी बड़ी इच्छा के बल से, वह खुद यह बन गया, आकाश जैसा शरीर रखने वाला, परम शक्तिशाली स्वामी।
प्रभावजितभूपीठः प्रतापाक्रान्तविष्टपः । कृपापालितपातालस्त्रिलोकविजयी नृपः ॥ २१ ॥
prabhāvajitabhūpīṭhaḥ pratāpākrāntaviṣṭapaḥ | kṛpāpālitapātālastrilokavijayī nṛpaḥ || 21 ||
He became a king who conquered the seat of the earth by his splendor, overran the world with his might, protected the netherworld with kindness, a king victorious over the three worlds.
वह ऐसा राजा बन गया जिसने अपने तेज से धरती को जीत लिया, अपने पराक्रम से पूरी दुनिया को दबा लिया, दया से पाताल की रक्षा की, तीनों लोकों को जीतने वाला राजा।
कल्पाग्निररिवृक्षाणां स्त्रीणां मकरकेतनः । मेरुर्विषयवायूनां साध्वब्जानां दिवाकरः ॥ २२ ॥
kalpāgnirarivṛkṣāṇāṃ strīṇāṃ makaraketanaḥ | merurviṣayavāyūnāṃ sādhvabjānāṃ divākaraḥ || 22 ||
He was the world-ending fire to his enemies as though they were trees, the love-god himself to women, a Mount Meru unshaken by the winds of sensual temptation, and a sun to good men who were like lotuses.
वह अपने शत्रुओं के लिए, मानो वे पेड़ हों, प्रलय की आग जैसा था; स्त्रियों के लिए वह स्वयं कामदेव जैसा था; विषय-वासना की हवाओं से न डिगने वाला मेरु पर्वत जैसा था; और भले लोगों के लिए, जो कमल जैसे थे, सूरज जैसा था।
आदर्शः सर्वशास्त्राणामर्थिनां कल्पपादपः । पादपीठं द्विजाग्र्याणां राकाधर्मामृतत्विषः ॥ २३ ॥
ādarśaḥ sarvaśāstrāṇāmarthināṃ kalpapādapaḥ | pādapīṭhaṃ dvijāgryāṇāṃ rākādharmāmṛtatviṣaḥ || 23 ||
He was a mirror of all the scriptures, a wish-granting tree for those in need, a footstool at the service of the finest brahmins, glowing with the nectar-light of the full moon night.
वह सारे शास्त्रों का आईना था, ज़रूरतमंदों के लिए कल्पवृक्ष था, श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों की सेवा में रखी चौकी था, पूर्णिमा की चाँदनी जैसी अमृत-रोशनी से चमकता था।
स्वगृहाभ्यन्तराकाशे चित्ताकाशमयात्मनि । तस्मिन्द्विजे शवीभूते भूताकाशशरीरिणि ॥ २४ ॥
svagṛhābhyantarākāśe cittākāśamayātmani | tasmindvije śavībhūte bhūtākāśaśarīriṇi || 24 ||
In the space inside his own house, whose self was now made of the space of the mind, that brahmin had become a corpse, his body now the space of the elements.
अपने घर के भीतर के उसी आकाश में, जिसका स्वरूप अब मन के आकाश जैसा था, वह ब्राह्मण अब शव बन चुका था, और उसका शरीर अब पंचभूतों के आकाश जैसा था।
सा तस्य ब्राह्मणी भार्या शोकेनात्यन्तकर्शिता । शुष्केव माषशिम्बीका हृदयेन द्विधाभवत् ॥ २५ ॥
sā tasya brāhmaṇī bhāryā śokenātyantakarśitā | śuṣkeva māṣaśimbīkā hṛdayena dvidadhābhavat || 25 ||
That brahmin's wife was worn utterly thin by grief; like a dried black-gram pod, her heart split into two.
उस ब्राह्मण की पत्नी शोक से बहुत दुबली हो गई थी; सूखी उड़द की फली की तरह उसका दिल दो टुकड़ों में बँट गया।
भर्त्रा सह शवीभूता देहमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। आतिवाहिकदेहेन भर्तारं समुपाययौ ॥ २६ ॥
bhartāra saha śavībhūtā dehamutsṛjya dūrataḥ| ātivāhikadehena bhartāraṃ samupāyayau || 26 ||
Turning corpse-like along with her husband, she left her own body far behind, and in her subtle traveling-body went to join her husband.
अपने पति के साथ वह भी मुर्दे जैसी हो गई, अपना शरीर दूर पीछे छोड़कर, अपने सूक्ष्म यात्रा-शरीर से जाकर पति से मिल गई।
नदीनिखातमिव तं भर्तारमनुसृत्य सा। आजगाम विशोकत्वं सा वासन्तीव मञ्जरी ॥ २७ ॥
nadīnikhātamiva taṃ bhartāramanusṛtya sā| ājagāma viśokatvaṃ sā vāsantīva mañjarī || 27 ||
Following her husband into that chasm cut by a river, she became free of grief, like a spray of vasanti blossoms bursting into flower.
नदी के काटे हुए उस गहरे गड्ढे में गए अपने पति के पीछे जाकर, वह शोक से मुक्त हो गई, जैसे वसंती बेल का फूलों भरा गुच्छा खिल उठता है।
तत्रास्य विप्रस्य गृहाणि सन्ति भूस्थावरादीनि धनानि सन्ति। अद्याष्टमं वासरमाप्तमृत्योर्जीवो गिरिग्रामककन्दरस्थः ॥ २८ ॥
tatrasya viprasya gṛhāṇi santi bhūsthāvarādīni dhanāni santi| adyāṣṭamaṃ vāsaramāptamṛtyorjīvo girigrāmakakandarasthaḥ || 28 ||
There this brahmin has houses, and he has wealth such as land and other fixed property. Today is the eighth day since his death; his life now dwells in a cave of a mountain village.
वहाँ इस ब्राह्मण के घर हैं, और ज़मीन-जायदाद जैसी संपत्ति भी है। आज उसे मरे हुए आठवाँ दिन हुआ है; उसका जीव अब एक पहाड़ी गाँव की गुफा में है।
