13.116.1

śrīrāma uvācarājasūyaphalaṃ prāptaṃ lavaṇena kila prabhopramāṇaṃ kimivātra syātkalpanājālaśambare || 1 ||

Rama said, Lord, they say Lavana got the fruit of the rajasuya sacrifice. What proof could there be here, in this web of imagination and illusion?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācayadā śāmbarikaḥ kāle saṃprāpto lāvaṇīṃ sabhāmtadāhamavasaṃ tatra tatpratyakṣeṇa dṛṣṭavān || 2 ||

Vasishtha said, when the sorcerer arrived at Lavana's court at the right time, I was staying there, and I saw it all with my own eyes.

ahaṃ sabhyaistatastatra gate śāmbarikarmaṇikimetaditi yatnena pṛṣṭaśca lavaṇena ca || 3 ||

After the sorcerer's act was over there, I, along with the members of the court, was asked earnestly by Lavana too, what is this?

cintayitvā mayā dṛṣṭvā tatra tatkathitaṃ tataḥśrṛṇu tatte pravakṣyāmi rāma śāmbarikehitam || 4 ||

Having thought it over and having seen it, I told them there what it was. Listen, Rama, now I will tell you the sorcerer's doings.

rājasūyasya kartāro ye hi te dvādaśābdikamāpadduḥkhaṃ prāpnuvanti nānākāravyathāmayam || 5 ||

Those who perform the rajasuya sacrifice get, for twelve years, calamity and suffering, full of many kinds of pain.

ataḥ śakreṇa gaganādduḥkhāya lavaṇasya saḥ | prahito devadūto hi rāma śāmbarikākṛtiḥ || 6 ||

So, Rama, Indra sent that divine messenger down from the sky, in the form of a sorcerer, to bring suffering on Lavana.

rājasūyakriyākartustasya dattvā mahāpadam | agacchat sa nabhomārgaṃ surasiddhaniṣevitam || 7 ||

Having given great calamity to the man who performed the rajasuya rite, he went off by the path of the sky, which gods and siddhas travel.

So, Rama, this is something seen directly, there is no doubt about it here. It is the mind that does these different kinds of actions and enjoys their results. Rub that very mind clean, purify it like a jewel, and lead it, through discrimination, to melt away, as a snowflake melts in the sun, then you will reach the highest good. Know the mind itself to be the ignorance that puts on this whole show of all beings. It produces this world by the power of a strange magic show. Knowing that there is no real difference between the words ignorance, mind, individual soul, and intellect, just as there is no real difference between the words tree and tree, treat every distinction as the mind alone. When the clean sun of a pure mind has risen, taking away, along with its stain, the darkness of the faults born from making distinctions, then, Rama, there is nothing that is not seen, nothing that is not claimed as one's own, nothing that is not given up, nothing that does not die, nothing that is one's own, nothing that belongs to another, everything, at all times, becomes everything. This is the highest truth.

bhāvarāśistathā bodhaḥ sarvo yātyekapiṇḍatām | vicitramṛdbhāṇḍagaṇo yathā'pakvo jale sthitaḥ || 9 ||

In this way the whole mass of things, along with awareness, all becomes a single lump, as a collection of different unbaked clay pots, kept standing in water, turns back into one mass of mud.

śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ manaḥparikṣaye sakalasukhaduḥkhānāmantaḥ prāpyata iti bhavatā proktaṃ tatkathaṃ mahātmaṃścapalavṛttirūpasyāsya manaso'sattā bhavati || 10 ||

Rama said, you have said that when the mind comes to an end, all pleasure and pain also come to an end. Great one, how then does this mind, which by nature keeps moving restlessly, come to be nothing?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | raghukulendo śrṇu manaḥpraśamane yuktiṃ yāṃ jñātvā svasvācāradūre manaḥsaṃdhirayameṣyasi || 11 ||

Vasishtha said, o moon of the Raghu family, listen to the method for calming the mind. Once you know it, staying far from your usual ways, you will come to this settling of the mind.

iha hi tāvadbrahmaṇaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ trividhotpattiriti tatpūrvoktam || 12 ||

Here, as said before, all beings come from Brahman in three ways.

tatredaṃprathamayā manaḥkalpanayā dehīti sā brahmarūpiṇī saṃkalpamayī bhūtvā yadeva saṃkalpayati tadeva paśyati tenedaṃ bhuvanāḍambaraṃ kalpyate || 13 ||

In this, by the mind's very first act of imagining, comes the thought I am embodied. That power, taking the form of Brahman, made wholly of intention, sees exactly what it intends, and by this, this whole show of the world is built up out of imagination.

tatrajananamaraṇasukhaduḥkhamohādikaṃ saṃsaraṇaṃ kalpayantī kalpānuracanā bahunāmamantharaṃ sthitvā svayaṃ vilīyate himakaṇikevātapagatā || 14 ||

There, imagining the cycle of birth, death, pleasure, pain, delusion and so on, this ongoing shaping stays sluggish under many names for a long while, and then dissolves by itself, like a snowflake that has met the sun's heat.

kāloditaḥ saṃkalpavaśāt punaranyatayā jāyate sāpi punarvilīyate punarapyudeti saiveiti bhūyobhūyo'nusaṃsarantī svayamupaśāmyati || 15 ||

Arising in time, by the force of intention it is born again as something else, that too dissolves again, again it rises up, that very same thing, so, wandering again and again through this cycle, it finally comes to rest by itself.

itthamanantā brahmakoṭayo'sminbrahmāṇḍe'nyeṣu ca samatītā bhaviṣyantīti santi cetarā anantā yāsāṃ saṃkhyāpi na vidyate || 16 ||

In this way there are endless crores of Brahma-creations, in this universe and in others, that have passed, and others that will come, and still others that exist now, endless ones, whose number itself cannot be found.

evamasyaṃ tādṛśi vartamānāyāmīśvarādāgatya jīvo yathā jīvyate vimucyate tacchṛṇu || 17 ||

Now, while this creation of that kind goes on, listen to how the individual soul, coming from the Lord, lives, and how it is set free.

brahmaṇo manaḥśaktirabhyuditā puraḥsthitākāśaśaktimavalambya tatrastapavanatānupātinī ghanasaṅkalatvaṃ gacchati || 18 ||

Brahman's power of mind, once it has arisen, rests on the power of space standing in front of it, and following the nature of the wind present there, it becomes dense and compact.

tataḥ puraḥprāptabhūtatanmātrapañcakatāmetyāntaḥkaraṇatāṃ nītvā sātvasūkṣmā prakṛtirbhūtvā gaganapavanatejorūpatāsaṃkalpātprāleyarūpatāmupetya śālyoṣadhiṃ viśantī prāṇināṃ garbhatāṃ ca gacchati || 19 ||

Then, having reached the state of the five subtle elements obtained earlier, and having turned into the inner faculty, becoming a subtle nature made of goodness, out of the intention that shapes itself into the forms of sky, wind and fire, it takes on the form of dew, enters the rice plant, and becomes the embryo of living beings.

jāyate tasmāttataḥ puruṣaḥ saṃpadyate || 20 ||

From that, birth takes place, and from there a person comes into being.

tena puruṣeṇa jātamātreṇaiva bālyātprabhṛti vidyāgrahaṇaṃ kartavyaṃ guravo'nugantavyāḥ || 21 ||

That person, right from birth, must take up learning from childhood onward, and must follow teachers.

tataḥ kramātpum̐sastaveva camatkṛtirjāyatte || 22 ||

Then, step by step, a sense of wonder arises in that man, just as it has in you.

svacchadṛśā cittavṛtteḥ puruṣasya heyopādeyavicāra utpadyate || 23 ||

By clear sight, the person comes to judge, about the movements of the mind, what should be rejected and what should be accepted.

tādṛgvivekavati saṃkalitābhimāne puṃsi sthite vimalasattvamayāgnyajātau saptātmikāvatarati kramaśaḥ śivāya cetḥprakāśanakarī nanu yogabhūmiḥ || 24 ||

When the person endowed with such discrimination stands firm, his sense of self now gathered into one, in that pure state born of stainless goodness, the sevenfold stage, which lights up the mind, comes down step by step for his good. This indeed is the ground of yoga.
