vāgbābhirbrahmavidbrahma bhāti svapna ivātmani | yadidam tatsvabdotthairyo yadveti sa vetti tat || 1 ||
The knower of Brahman speaks of Brahman using words, just as Brahman shines within the self the way a dream shines within the sleeper. Whatever is being said here rises from its own words - whoever knows a thing knows it through the words for it.
By this reasoning, since Brahman is like the sky in which this world and this creation exist, the questions 'what is this, whose is it, where is it' are all answered and put to rest.
Consciousness itself, which knows the body as if it were the sky, sees this world exactly as a dream is seen. This 'I' and 'you' joined together are explained by that very example of the dream-world.
This bondage exists because the seen world exists; when the seen world is absent, there is no bondage. Now listen, in order, to how this seen world came to be.
ataste svāvabodhārthaṃ tattāvatkathayāmyahamutpattiḥ saṃsṛtāveti pūrvameva hi yo yathā || 8 ||
So, for you to understand this yourself, I will now tell how birth happens in this cycle of worldly existence - exactly as it happened at the very beginning.
'The real', 'the self', 'the supreme brahman', 'the truth' and other names like these are given by the wise for the sake of everyday use, to that great being.
sa tathābhūta evātmā svayamanya ivollasanjīvatāmupayātīva bhāvināmnā kadarthitām || 13 ||
That same self, shining as if it were something else, seems to take on the state of a living being - a state weighed down, as it were, by the very name 'the one about to become.'
tataḥ sa jīvaśabdārthakalanākulatāṃ gataḥmano bhavati bhūtātmā mananānmantharībhavan || 14 ||
Then, caught up in the confusion tied to the meaning of the word 'jiva' (living being), it becomes the mind - the self that has taken a form - growing dull and heavy through this constant thinking.
yathā kaṭakaśabdārthaḥ pṛthaktvārho na kāñcanātna hema kaṭakāttadvajjagacchabdārthatā pare || 17 ||
Just as the meaning of the word 'bracelet' cannot be separate from gold, and gold cannot be separate from the bracelet, in the same way the meaning of the word 'world' is not separate from the Supreme.
O boundless one, this world, exactly as it appears, exists only within Brahman. The thing that the word 'world' points to has no separate existence, just as bracelet-ness has no separate existence in gold.
O dear one, the existence of the seen for the seer is called bondage; the seer is bound by the power of the seen and is freed when the seen is absent.
By useless mutterings of 'not this, not this' - which themselves give rise to more thought - the disease of the seen does not calm down; rather, it grows worse.
na ca tarkabharakṣodairna tīrthaniyamādibhiḥsato dṛśyasya jagato yasmādeti vicārakāḥ || 25 ||
Wise seekers do not arrive at the truth about this seen world, which claims to exist, through heavy arguments and reasoning, nor through pilgrimages, vows and such things.
jagaddṛśyaṃ tu yadyasti na śāmyatyeva kasyacitnāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ || 26 ||
But if this visible world truly exists, then it will never come to an end for anyone. What is unreal never comes into being, and what is real never stops being.
Wherever this self stands as the seer -- a self whose true nature is consciousness that cannot be grasped by thought -- there the glory of the seen world rises up for it, even inside the smallest atom.
So the seen world does exist -- but I have wiped it away, I have given it up through austerity, meditation and chanting, the way one feels full on nothing but sour rice-water.
yatra tatra sthite yadvaddarpaṇe pratibimbatiadyabdhyurvīnadīvāri cidādarśe tathaiva hi || 30 ||
Just as a thing, placed anywhere, is reflected in a mirror, so today the ocean, the earth, the river and its water are reflected in the mirror of consciousness, in exactly the same way.
Then, there again come suffering, old age, death and birth, the grasping and letting-go of existence and non-existence, the gross and the subtle, the moving and the unmoving.
I have wiped away this seen world, and here I stand firm. But this very effort is the imperishable seed of the memory of worldly life, even in samadhi.
sati tvasminkuto dṛśye nirvikalpasamādhitāsamādhau cetanatvaṃ tu turyaṃ cāpyupapadyate || 33 ||
So long as this seen world exists, how can there be thought-free samadhi at all? And yet, it is said that in samadhi, awareness -- the fourth state, turiya -- is still possible.
vyutthāne hi samādhānātsuṣuptānta ivākhilamjagadduḥkhamidaṃ bhāti yathāsthitamakhaṇḍitam || 34 ||
For, on coming out of samadhi, just as at the end of deep sleep, this whole world of suffering shines forth again, standing exactly as it was, unbroken.
prāptaṃ bhavati he rāma tatkiṃ nāma samādhibhiḥbhūyo'narthanipāte hi kṣaṇasāmye hi kiṃ sukham || 35 ||
So, O Rama, what is really gained through such states of samadhi, when misfortune falls again afterward? What happiness is there in a calm that lasts only a moment?
Or if someone does attain a steady state in thought-free samadhi, that state, resembling an unending deep sleep, one might think of as the highest, stainless place.
And if the seer forces himself to imagine that he has become like a stone, then even at the end of that state, the seen world rises up for him once again.
na ca pāṣāṇatātulyā rūḍhiṃ yātāḥ samādhayaḥbhavantyagrapadaṃ śāntaṃ cidrūpamajamakṣayam || 40 ||
And samadhis that have become fixed and lasting are not like being a stone; they become the highest state -- peaceful, made of pure consciousness, unborn, imperishable.
Therefore, if this seen world is truly real, it will never come to an end at any time. To think it will end through austerity, chanting and meditation is the fancy of an ignorant person.
Just as the seed of a lotus-plant lies folded up in the shape of a vine inside the hollow of the lotus, so the notion of the seen world lies hidden inside the seer.
Just as fragrance rises up from camphor and such things, wherever they are placed, so the visible world rises up from within the substance of consciousness.
And just as, here, your dream, your intention and the notion of a mind-made kingdom are things known only through your own experience, so too the ground of this seen world lies within the heart.
Just as the sprout, sitting inside the seed, grows and spreads into a bright, full body according to time and place, so indeed does the notion of the seen world grow and spread.
Just as the delight in a thing always rises up within its own heart, never setting, never leaving it, so for that reality whose body is pure consciousness, the existence of the world dwells within it as its own very nature, always risen, never departing.
