Rama said: We are born into this world, which is like a great ocean, always shifting and tossed with waves that are the burdens of daily work. But even after that birth, childhood by itself brings nothing but suffering.
Childhood is a dense ignorance made of mere reflections, made fragile by countless passing whims, its mind cut up and crumbling - who could this ever bring happiness to?
The fear a child feels at every step, born purely from ignorance, out of constant dread of water, fire, and wind, would not come even to someone facing a real disaster.
In its games, its bad amusements, its wrong pursuits, and its wicked little schemes, a child falls into the deepest confusion, and falls into it completely.
Childhood is made up of things begun out of mere fancy, tasting of bad play, and standing on no firm ground. It exists only to be corrected and disciplined, not to give peace.
ye doṣā ye durācārā duṣkramā ye durādhayaḥ | te sarve saṃsthitā bālye durgarta iva kauśikāḥ || 10 ||
Whatever faults there are, whatever bad conduct, whatever wrong ways of doing things, whatever troubled thoughts - all of these settle down in childhood, like owls settling in a dark pit.
Where the mind swings back and forth like a swing among its own moods, how could anything - even something that could never happen in all three worlds - ever satisfy it?
manaḥ prakṛtyaiva calaṃ bālyaṃ ca calatāṃ varam| tayoḥ saṃśliṣyatosatrātā ka ivāntaḥ kucāpale || 14 ||
The mind is restless by its own nature, and childhood is the most restless thing of all. When these two restless things come together, who could hold them steady - any more than one could hold steady the trembling of a young woman's breast?
O Brahmin, a mind overpowered by childishness becomes as practiced in restlessness as a woman's darting eyes, a flash of lightning, a tongue of flame, or a rippling wave.
A child, his face always wet with tears, smeared with mud, and dull-minded, is like a patch of hot ground just soaked by rain.
Childhood takes on a body that thinks mainly of fear and food, that is pitiful, that longs for things it can see and things it cannot see, and has a restless mind - it exists only for suffering.
A child who goes to school suffers extreme torment, as terrible as the disorder caused by poison, like a great elephant tied to its post.
Filled with excitement, a child wishes to enjoy the whole world and to grab the moon down from the sky - how could such foolishness ever bring happiness?
antaścittēraśaktasya śītātapanivāraṇē | ko viśēṣō mahābuddhē bālasyaorvīruhastathā || 28 ||
A child cannot protect himself from cold or heat through his own inner strength. What difference is there then, O wise one, between a child and a tree?
In childhood there is fear of the teacher, fear of the mother, and fear of the father too, fear of people in general, and fear of older children - childhood is a house of fear.
O great sage, childhood, whose very nature is shaped by every kind of fault, though it may be a refuge for those who delight in foolishness, never gives true satisfaction to anyone at all in this world.
