Shri Rama said: This body, packed inside with wet strings of gut, always changing, always falling apart, shows itself in this world only to bring suffering.
Though the body knows nothing, it seems as if it knows; it is full of a strange wonder about itself. Thought about carefully, it seems fit at one time and unfit at another; it is neither lifeless matter nor a conscious being.
It hangs between looking sentient and looking lifeless, and it wavers with a confused, uncertain mind. Being without judgment and deeply deluded, it produces only confusion.
Its arms are branches, its trunk is thick, its teeth stand like well-placed pillars; its eyes move over it like bees, and its head is its great fruit.
It drips with sap on the inside; its hands and feet are like tender new shoots; it has thickets of growth all over it, a whole bundle of activities going on, and birds make it their home.
sacchāyo dehavṛkṣo'yaṃ jīvapānthagaṇāspadaḥ | kasyātmīyaḥ kasya para āsthānāsthe kilātra ke || 8 ||
This tree of the body, giving pleasant shade, is a resting place for crowds of traveling souls passing through life. Whose own is it? To whom does it not belong? What here truly deserves trust, and what deserves distrust?
It has grown up in the forest of this world, with the restless mind as a monkey playing on it; its flower-clusters are nothing but worries, and long sorrow bores into it like a worm eating wood.
It is a home for the she-snake called craving, and a nest built by the crow called anger. It is where a smile of goodness sometimes sprouts; it looks splendid, and it bears great fruits, both good and bad.
It is a perch for all the senses, which sit on it like birds. It stands tall, its knees like fine pillars, and it gives cool, pleasant shade where travelers driven by desire come to rest.
vicchinnavāsanājālamūlatvāddurlavākṛtiḥ | vyāyāmavirasaḥ kāyaplakṣo'yaṃ na sukhāya me || 17 ||
Because its root is a tangled web of desires, this fig tree of a body is hard to cut down; no effort spent on it brings any pleasure — it is not for my happiness.
paṅktibaddhendriyapaśuṃ valattṛṣṇāgṛhāṅganam | rāgarañjitasarvāṅgaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 19 ||
This house of the body — where the senses are tied up in a row like animals, where craving wanders about the courtyard, and where every part is stained with passion — I do not want it.
pṛṣṭhāsthikāṣṭhasaṃghaṭṭaparisankata-koṭaram | āntrarajjubhirābaddhaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 20 ||
This house of the body, its inner spaces packed tight where wooden-like backbones meet and jam together, and everything tied up with ropes of gut — I do not want it.
prasṛtasnāyutantrīkaṃ raktāmbukṛtakardamam | jarāmaṅkoladhavalaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 21 ||
Its sinews stretch out like taut cords; blood and water together have turned to mud in it; old age has turned it white like the mankola flower — this house of the body is not dear to me.
cittabhṛtyakṛtānantaceṣṭāvaṣṭabdhasaṃsthiti | mithyāmohamahāsthūṇaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 22 ||
This house of the body stands only because its servant, the mind, works endlessly to hold it up; its one great pillar is nothing but false delusion — I do not want it.
duḥkhārbhakakṛtākrandaṃ sukhaśayyāmanoramam | durīhādagdhadāsīkaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 23 ||
In this house of the body, a child named sorrow cries and wails, there is a lovely soft bed of pleasure, and a servant-woman who has been burned by base cravings — I do not want it.
malāḍhyaviṣayavyūhabhāṇḍopaskarasaṃkaṭam | ajñānakṣāravali taṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 24 ||
This house of the body is packed with the pots and furniture of sense-pleasures, all of it full of filth, and it is coated all over with the harsh salt of ignorance — I do not want it.
gulphagugguluviśrāntajānūrdhvastambhamastakam | dīghadoradārusudṛḍhaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 25 ||
This house of the body has ankles like lumps of resin at its base, pillars rising from the knees up to the head at the top, and long arms as sturdy as wooden beams — I do not want it.
prakaṭākṣagavākṣāntaḥ krīḍatprajñāgṛhāṅganam| cintāduhitṛkaṃ brahmannēṣṭaṃ dēhagṛhaṃ mama || 26 ||
This house of the body has its eyes as clear little windows, and inside its courtyard understanding plays about; it has worry for a daughter — brahmin, I do not want it.
mūrdhajācchādanacchannakarṇaśrīcandraśālikam| ādīrghāṅgulinirvyūhaṃ nēṣṭaṃ dēhagṛhaṃ mama || 27 ||
In this house of the body, the ear is like a fine little balcony, but hair from the head hangs down and hides it; and it has a row of long fingers — I do not want it.
nakhorṇanābhinilayaṃ saramāraṇitāntaram| bhāṅkārakāripavanaṃ nēṣṭaṃ dēhagṛhaṃ mama || 29 ||
In this house of the body, nails, fine body-hair, and the navel are its little nooks; inside, it growls like a dog, and the wind inside it makes a rumbling, roaring sound — I do not want it.
jihvāmarkaṭikākrāntavadanadvārabhīṣaṇam | dṛṣṭadantāsthiśakalaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛha mama || 31 ||
This house of the body is frightening: at its mouth-door a little monkey — the tongue — keeps moving about, and inside one can see the bony bits that are its teeth — I do not want it.
This house of the body is smooth, plastered over with skin like whitewash, restless like a machine in constant motion, and always being dug into by the mind, which behaves like a mouse — I do not want it.
This house of the body shines for a moment with the light of a smile, like a lamp, and looks lovely for a moment in joy — but the next moment it is flooded with darkness — I do not want it.
samastarogāyatanaṃ valīpalitapattanam | sarvādhisāragahanaṃ neṣṭaṃ dehagṛhaṃ mama || 34 ||
This house of the body is home to every disease, a whole city of wrinkles and grey hair, and a thick jungle made from the very essence of every worry — I do not want it.
This forest of the body is rough and uneven from bears crashing through it, empty inside, its hollows worthless, and its groves in every direction are thick with darkness — I do not want it.
This body is made of blood and flesh, inside and out, and its only real nature, sage, is to be destroyed. Tell me, what is truly lovely about the body?
This body is as unsteady as the flapping tip of a rutting elephant's ear, as fragile as a hanging drop of water. Before it can abandon me, I will abandon it.
Though for years it has been fed and given drink, and though great care has made it as delicate and graceful as a tender young shoot, this body still keeps running toward its own destruction.
tānyeva sukhaduḥkhāni bhāvābhāvamayānyasau | bhūyo'pyanubhavankāyaḥ prākṛto hi na lajjate || 43 ||
Feeling the same pleasures and pains over and over again, each one arising only to vanish, this body, being a coarse, base thing, feels no shame about it at all.
Even after ruling for a long time and enjoying wealth and glory, the body never gains any lasting greatness or stability. So why should anyone go on cherishing it?
When it is time to grow old, the body grows old; when it is time to die, it dies. The body treats a rich man and a poor man exactly the same, making no difference between them.
In the depths of the ocean of this world, hidden inside a deep cave of craving, this silent tortoise called the body lies asleep, all its striving given up.
Bodies are nothing but countless logs of wood, good only for burning, drifting along in the ocean of this world — yet people look at one of these logs and think, 'here is a man.'
This vine that is the body has twisted itself up with long-standing wickedness, and the only fruit it ever bears is a fall. A person of true understanding has nothing at all to do with this body-vine.
Like a frog sinking into holes of mud, this body suddenly reaches old age. No one knows how or when this frog-like body will quickly slip away.
Bodies are like fickle gusts of wind — everything they undertake comes to nothing. As they move along their dusty path, no one here truly sees them for what they are.
Does anyone truly know how the wind moves, how a lamp's flame goes, how the mind moves? And does anyone, Lord, ever truly know how the body comes or goes?
baddhāsthā ye śarīreṣu baddhāsthā ye jagatsthitau| tānmohamadironmattāndhigdhigastu punaḥpunaḥ || 52 ||
Shame, shame, again and again, on those who place their trust in the body, and on those who place their trust in worldly life — they are simply drunk on the wine of delusion.
nāhaṃ dehasya no deho mama nāyamahaṃ tathā| iti viśrāntacittā ye te mune puruṣottamāḥ || 53 ||
'I do not belong to the body, the body does not belong to me, and I am not this body' — those whose minds have settled into this understanding, sage, are the finest among men.
These conditions — full of honor and dishonor, delightful with their many gains — destroy the man of faulty understanding who has placed all his trust merely in the body.
Poor understanding, all alone, is tricked completely — how sad — by this demoness called false knowledge, whose whole attachment clings to the body.
This body will soon perish, like a bubble on the ocean. It flickers into being uselessly, amid the endless turning of worldly affairs, and comes to nothing.
mithyājñānavikāre'smin svapnasambhramapattane | kāye sphuṭatarāpāye kṣaṇamāsthā na me dvija || 60 ||
This body is nothing but a product of false understanding, a city as confused and unreal as a dream — and its ruin is plain to see. I do not trust it, even for a moment, brahmin.
taḍitsu śaradabhreṣu gandharvanagareṣu ca | sthairyaṃ yena vinirṇītaṃ sa viśvasitu vigrahe || 61 ||
Whoever finds something lasting in a flash of lightning, in autumn clouds, or in a mirage city in the sky — only he should place his trust in the body.
This body — whose endless chain of activities keeps breaking down, which wins its little victories only by force and struggle, and which is full of serious flaws — I have thrown away like a blade of grass, and now I rest at ease, happy.
