This confusion in Rama's mind is not because of any real trouble, and not because of any desire either. For someone who has understanding and wants nothing from the world, this very awakening is a great blessing.
Let Rama come here right now, and let us also come here right now. We will take away his confusion, the way the wind blows a cloud away from a mountain.
He will get truthfulness, joy, understanding, rest, freedom from pain, a strong healthy body, and a fine complexion, as if he had drunk the nectar of immortality.
He will become a person of great strength of mind who has seen both the higher and the lower sides of the world, free from the states of pleasure and pain, and to whom a lump of mud, a stone, and gold are all the same.
Surrounded by a few servants and by his two brothers, he went to his father's sacred place, dear to his heart, like going to the heaven of Indra, the king of gods.
He was being served by lovely women holding beautiful fly-whisks, each standing in her right place, like the directions of the sky come alive as women, each standing exactly where she should.
Vasishtha, Vishvamitra and the others, and also Dasharatha and the others, saw Rama from far away, coming toward them, looking like Guha, the god of war.
sattvāvaṣṭabdhagarbheṇa śalyeneva himācalamśritaṃ sakalasevyena gambhīreṇa sphuṭena ca || 15 ||
He was someone all could rely on, deep and clear, his inside made firm by his own inner strength, the way a great snow mountain is made firm by the rock inside it.
He was gentle, even-tempered, of a good and pleasant look, noble-minded through humility, lovely and calm in body, and a true support for the good of others.
His youth was just beginning to rise, yet he was beautiful with the calm of an old, wise man. His mind held a joy that was never disturbed, and almost all his wishes were already fulfilled.
He had thought deeply about how the world works, and only pure, good qualities could reach him. It was as if all good qualities had come and settled on him, out of sheer greed to be part of someone with such a great and noble spirit.
He was generous, of noble birth, and completely full inside, in the depth of his heart. Through his calm, undisturbed way of behaving, he showed that nothing was higher than him.
Rama, the pride of the Raghu family, was full of all these good qualities, and could be told apart even from far away, by his gentle, clear smile, and by his bright necklace and the loose end of his garment moving as he walked.
He bowed down his head, on which his lovely crest-jewel swayed and flashed as he moved, and that head, in its splendor, looked like a divine mountain shaking and making the earth tremble.
First he bowed to his father, then to the two sages who alone deserved the highest honor, then to the brahmins, then to his relatives, then to the group of elders and teachers, being a true friend to everyone.
And Dasharatha, the slayer of enemy heroes, embraced Shatrughna and Lakshmana in the same way, with deep love, the way a royal swan settles on a lotus.
rājovācaputra prāptavivekastvaṃ kalyāṇānāṃ ca bhājanamjaḍavajjīrṇayā buddhyā khedāyātmā na dīyatām || 29 ||
The king said: My son, you have gained the power to tell right from wrong, and you are fit to receive every good thing. Do not hand yourself over to sorrow with a worn-out mind, like someone who cannot think clearly.
Sri Vasishtha said: Prince, mighty-armed one, you are brave, you have already conquered these enemies in the form of the senses, enemies that are hard to destroy and even hard to start fighting.
Then why are you sinking, as if you did not know this, like someone who is ignorant, into an ocean of confusion, an ocean fit only for the ignorant, full of big waves, and full of dullness?
Vishvamitra said: Your eyes are restless, like a mass of blue lotuses swaying in the wind. Tell us plainly, without hiding anything, for what reason are you so confused?
kiṃniṣṭhāḥ ke ca te kena kiyantaḥ kāraṇena teādhayaḥ pravilumpanti mano gehamivākhavaḥ || 35 ||
What are these worries based on? What are they? By what and how many are they caused? These anxieties are eating away at your mind, the way mice eat away at a house.
manye nānucitānāṃ tvamādhīnāṃ padamuttamamāpatsu cā'prayojyaṃ te nihīnā api cādhayaḥ || 36 ||
I do not think you are the kind of person who should carry such unfitting worries. Even in real trouble, one should not give in to such anxieties, and yours, in any case, are petty ones.
O wise one, when Rama, the pride of the Raghu family, heard this speech spoken to him, full of fitting and pleasing meaning, he threw off his sorrow, the way a peacock throws off its gloom when a rain cloud thunders, because he could already sense that he would get what he wished for.
