Dasharatha said: "Doorkeeper, go quickly and without any delay, and bring the strong-armed Rama, whose courage is true, along with Lakshmana, for this holy purpose."
Sent off by the king with these words, the doorkeeper went to the inner rooms of the palace, and after a short while he came back and spoke to the king.
Ever since Rama, whose eyes are like lotus petals, came back from his pilgrimage to holy places with the brahmins, from that very time he has been sad at heart.
snānadevārcanādānabhojanādiṣu durmanāḥ | prārthito'pi hi nātṛpteraśnātyaśanamīśvaraḥ || 11 ||
He is sad in his bathing, in worshipping the gods, in giving gifts, in eating, and in everything else. Even when we beg him, this lord eats his food without any relish, never satisfied.
He does not play on the swings that the restless women of the palace have set up in the courtyard, just as a chatak bird does not play in a stream of water.
O king, even his rows of armlets and bracelets, strung with buds made of ruby, give him no joy - just as the sky gives no joy to something that is falling.
Watching young women at play, feeling the breeze that carries the smell of flowers, sitting in bowers made of flowering vines - in all these, he becomes very sad.
"Why are these bright, moving city women causing me such pain?" - saying this, he finds fault with the loving women even while they dance and play.
"What use is wealth? What use is misfortune? What use is a house? What use are signs and gestures?" Saying that everything is worthless, he sits alone in silence.
Women with hair curling like tendrils, and eyes turned toward him playfully, do not delight him - just as deer do not delight a forest tree.
He finds pleasure only in lonely places - in distant regions, on riverbanks, in thickets - in the forests, among wild creatures, like someone who has been sold as a slave.
eka eva vasandeśe janśūnye janeśvara | na hasatyekayā buddhyā na gāyati na roditi || 23 ||
O king, he lives entirely alone in a place empty of people. With his mind fixed on one single thought, he does not laugh, he does not sing, and he does not cry.
nābhimānamupādatte na ca vāñchati rājatām | nudeti nāstamāyāti sukhaduḥkhānuvṛttiṣu || 25 ||
He does not take any pride in himself, and he does not wish for a kingdom. When pleasure and pain keep coming one after another, he neither rises up with joy nor sinks down with sorrow.
nānāvibhavaramyāsu strīṣu goṣṭhīgatāsu ca | purasthitamivāsneho nāśamevānupaśyati || 31 ||
When he looks at women who are beautiful with many kinds of riches and who gather together in company, he feels no affection for them, as if he were only watching something standing in front of him, and he sees in them only their coming end.
"My life has gone by in efforts that never brought me to the state where there is no more struggle" — saying this, he sings it over and over again in a low, faint voice.
When a servant standing beside him says, "May you become the emperor!" — the sage, his mind somewhere else, laughs at him as if he were a raving madman.
na proktamākarṇayati īkṣate na purogatam | karotyavajñāṃ sarvatra susametyāpi vastuni || 34 ||
He does not listen to what is said to him, he does not even look at what is right in front of him. He shows disrespect toward everything, even toward things that come to him well-suited and pleasing.
Even at the thought of a lotus pond in the sky, even at a great forest in the sky, even at the thought "such is this mind" — he feels no surprise at all.
Even when he is close beside a beautiful woman, the arrows of the god of love cannot pierce his mind, which is hard to break, just as a jet of falling water cannot break a great rock.
"Why do you want wealth, when wealth is the one home where all misfortunes live?" — teaching this, he gives away everything he owns to anyone who asks him for it.
"This is a misfortune, this is good fortune" — such ideas are made only of imagination; this is a delusion that has risen up from the mind — saying this, he sings these verses.
hā hato'hamanātho'hamityākrandaparo'pi san na jano yāti vairāgyaṃ citramityeva vaktyasau || 39 ||
Even when a person cries out in grief, "Alas, I am ruined, I am helpless!" — that person still does not turn toward giving up desire. Seeing this, he just says, "How strange this is!"
Because of Rama, the great tree of the Raghu family's forest, the killer of enemies, being so deeply fixed in this state, we have fallen into great sorrow.
na vidmaḥ kiṃ mahābāho tasya tādṛśacetasaḥ| kurmaḥ kamalapatrākṣa gatiratra hi no bhavān || 41 ||
O mighty-armed one, we do not know what to do about him, whose mind has become like this. O lotus-eyed one, you alone are our way forward in this matter.
O lord, whether it is a king or a learned teacher standing before him giving advice, he stays calm and laughs at them as if they were fools, and pays them no attention.
Whatever this vast thing called the world is, whatever has come into being — "this is not real, and I am not this either" — having decided this firmly, he stays fixed in it.
nārau nātmani no mitre na rājye na ca mātari| na saṃpadā na vipadā tasyāsthā na vibho bahiḥ || 44 ||
O lord, he has no concern at all — not for an enemy, not for himself, not for a friend, not for the kingdom, and not for his mother. Neither through good fortune nor through bad fortune does he care for anything outside himself.
nirastāstho nirāśo'sau nirīho'sau nirāspadaḥ| na mūḍho na ca mukto'sau tena tapyāmahe bhṛśam || 45 ||
He has thrown away all concern, he has no hope, he has no desire to do anything, and he has no fixed place to rest in. He is not a fool, and yet he is not free either — this is why we are suffering so much.
"What use is wealth, what use are the mothers, what use is a kingdom, what use is any effort?" — being firmly convinced of this within himself, he stays ready to give up his very life.
Toward pleasure, toward life itself, toward kingdoms, toward friend, father, and mother, he has come to feel the deepest distress, like a chataka bird in a drought.
This is the misfortune that has come upon this child, a misfortune that has spread out like the branches of a tree. Let someone full of compassion come forward to root it out completely.
O lord, for him, whose nature has become like this, the whole net of worldly life — even though it is full of every kind of riches and spread out wide — tastes like poison to him.
manasi mohamapāsya mahāmanāḥ sakalamārtitamaḥ kila sādhutām | saphalatāṃ nayatīha tamo haran dinakaro bhuvi bhāskaratāmiva || 51 ||
Having thrown delusion out of his mind, this great person turns all this darkness of pain into goodness here, and makes it bear fruit — just as the sun, driving away darkness, becomes the true giver of light on the earth.
