17.79.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca etasminnantare cakṣurvyomastho'hamathātyajam brahmaloke mahāloke prabhāte'rkaprabhāmiva || 1 ||

Shri Vasishtha said: In the meantime, I left my celestial vision in the great Brahmaloka, like the dawning of the sun's radiance.

yāvaddṛṣṭo mayā tatra śailādiva vinirmitaḥ parameṣṭhī samādhisthaḥ pradhānaparivāravān || 2 ||

As long as I saw there, the Supreme Lord, seated in meditation, surrounded by his principal attendants, appeared as if created from a mountain.

samūhaścaiva devānāṃ munīnāṃ bhāvitātmanām śukro bṛhaspatiścaiva śakro vaiśravaṇo yamaḥ || 3 ||

There was a gathering of gods and sages with purified minds, including Shukra, Brihaspati, Indra, Kubera, and Yama.

somō'tha varuṇō'gnīśca tathānyē'pi surarṣayaḥ devagandharvasiddhānāṃ sādhyānāṃ ca vināyakāḥ || 4 ||

Along with Soma, Varuna, Agni, and other divine sages, there were leaders of the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, and Sadhyas.

lipikarmārpitākārāḥ sarve dhyānaparāyaṇāḥ baddhapadmāsanāstatra nirjīvā iva saṃsthitāḥ || 5 ||

All of them, with their forms dedicated to the divine work, were engrossed in meditation, seated in the lotus position, appearing as if lifeless.

atha te dvādaśādityāstamevoddēśamāgatāḥ | baddhapadmāsanāstasthustathaivāśu yathaiva te || 6 ||

Then those twelve Adityas arrived at that place | They sat in the lotus position, just as they had done before

tato muhūrtamātrēṇa dṛṣṭavānahamabjajaṃ | puro vinidratāṃ yātaḥ svapnadṛṣṭamivāgragaṃ || 7 ||

Then, in just a moment, I saw the lotus-born one | He appeared before me as if in a dream

brahmalokajanaṃ sarvaṃ mahatāmiva vāsanām | nāpaśyaṃ svapnanagaraṃ budhyamāna ivāgragaṃ || 8 ||

I saw all the inhabitants of Brahmaloka as if in a great dwelling | I did not see the dream city, as if awakening

araṇyaśūnyamevāsīttadbrahmananaṃ tadā | kaṭhinākāṇḍavidhvastaṃ pṛthivyāmiva pattanam || 9 ||

That place was empty like a forest | It was as if the city on earth had been destroyed by a hard thunderbolt

None of them were anywhere to be seen at that time | The sages, the ascetics, the gods, the Vedas, and the Vidyadharas

jñātaṃ tato'vadhānena mayā nabhasi tiṣṭhatā | yāvannirvāṇamāpannā brahmavatsarva eva te || 11 ||

Thus, it is known by me with full attention, while abiding in the sky, all these have attained liberation, indeed all are like Brahman.

vāsanāyāṃ vilīnāyāmadarśanamupāgatāḥ | svapnalokāḥ prabuddhānāmiva svaṃ rūpamāgatāḥ || 12 ||

When the impressions are dissolved, they become invisible, like the dream worlds of the awakened ones, they regain their own form.

ākāśātmaiva deho'yaṃ bhāti vāsanayā sphuṭaḥ | tadabhāvāttu no bhāti svapno bodhavato yathā || 13 ||

This body appears clearly due to impressions, just like space. However, due to the absence of that, it does not appear, like a dream to the awakened.

antarikṣagato deho yathā svapne vilokyate | bodhe tadvāsanāśāntau na kiṃcidapi lakṣyate || 14 ||

Just as the body is seen in a dream in the sky, upon awakening, when those impressions are pacified, nothing is perceived.

jāgratyapi tathaivāyaṃ vāsanāyāḥ parikṣaye | naivātivāhiko naiva lakṣyate'trādhibhautikaḥ || 15 ||

Even in the waking state, similarly, with the diminution of impressions, neither the transient nor the material is perceived here.

svapnānubhava eṣo'tra dṛṣṭāntatvena lakṣyate | ābālametatsaṃsiddhamanubhūtaṃ śrutaṃ smṛtam || 16 ||

This experience of dream is illustrated here as an example. From childhood, this has been experienced, heard, and remembered.

One who denies their own experience is a fool. Such a person should be abandoned. Who can awaken a sleeping person with a mere lie?

dehakāraṇakaḥ svapno dehābhāvānna dṛśyate | iti cet tadadehānāṃ paraloko'pi nāsti ca || 18 ||

Dreams are caused by the body, and without the body, they are not seen. If this is the case, then for those without a body, there is no other world either.

ityetadabhaviṣyacchettaccharīrakasaṃkṣaye | nābhaviṣyadayaṃ sargaḥ sa cāstyeva ca sarvadā || 19 ||

If this were not to be, then in the destruction of the body, this creation would not exist. But it exists always.

207.79.20

avayavavibhāgātmani avaśyaṃbhāvini kṣaye | na kadācidanitthaṃ tajjagadityapyasaṃsthitam || 20 ||

In the inevitable decay of the parts, the world is never without purpose. This is also established.

na kadācijjagan nāśo dehodbhūtaguṇādikam | madaśaktiriva jñaptirudetīti ca vakṣi cet || 21 ||

Never is there destruction of the world, which is endowed with qualities born of the body | Knowledge arises like my power, and if you say so, I will explain || 21 ||

tatpurāṇetihāsānāṃ sarvasaṃkṣayavādinām | smṛtyādīnāṃ savedānāṃ vaiyarthyamupajāyate || 22 ||

The futility of all the Puranas, Itihasas, Smritis, and Vedas, which advocate the destruction of everything, arises || 22 ||

apramāṇatayaitasminnarthe teṣāṃ mahāmate | anyatrāṇi pramāṇatvaṃ vandhyādāvapi kiṃ bhavet || 23 ||

O great sage, if these are not authorities in this matter, then what authority do they have in other matters, even in the case of a barren woman? || 23 ||

na caitadiṣyate loke jagaducchēdakāraṇāt | anyaccāstāmētadaṅga mamēdamaparama śrṇu || 24 ||

This is not desired in the world due to the cause of the destruction of the universe | Listen to this other thing from me, O friend || 24 ||

madaśaktyātmani jñānē dṛṣṭā dēśāntarēṣu yā | prasṛtānāṃ piśācādidēhatā sā na sidhyati || 25 ||

The knowledge that is seen in other places in the self of my power does not establish the bodily existence of beings like ghosts || 25 ||

atha sāpi mudhā bhrāntiryāvaddehaṃ pradṛśyate | iti cet tan mudhā nāma satyamityeva vo bhavet || 26 ||

If this delusion persists as long as the body is visible, then it is indeed true in that sense.

evaṃ cet tatparo lokaḥ satsvarganarakādikam | ityeṣāpi na saṃvitkiṃ satyatāmupagacchati || 27 ||

If the world is devoted to that, including heaven and hell, then this consciousness does not attain truth.

na piśācapramā satyā madaśaktimato'pi hi | pratibhāsya na satyā syātparalokātmikā katham || 28 ||

The perception of a ghost is not true, even if it is due to the power of intoxication. How can the idea of the afterlife be true if it is merely an illusion?

piśāco'stīti cet saṃvitsatyārthā tena saṃvidaḥ | mṛtasyāsti paro loka ityasyāṃ kiṃ na satyatā || 29 ||

If the consciousness that a ghost exists is true, then why is the idea that there is an afterlife for the dead not true?

kākatālīyavaddehātpaīśācī jñaptirasti cet | paralokārthasaṃvittiḥ kathaṃ nāsti sakāraṇā || 30 ||

If there is a ghostly perception from the body like the crow's eye, then how can there not be a conscious perception of the afterlife?

yāntarvettyathā saṃvitsā tathānubhavatyalaṃ | astu satyamasyataṃ vā siddhamityanubhūtiḥ || 31 ||

As the inner knower knows, so does the consciousness experience | Let it be true or false, it is accomplished through experience

mṛtasyāsti paro loko vidityevaṃmayī bhavet | sati vā'sati dehe'smiṃsten kiṃ sadasacca kim || 32 ||

There is another world for the dead, thus one becomes knowledgeable | Whether this body exists or not, what is the truth and what is the falsehood

tasmātsvabhāvaḥ prathamaṃ prasphuranvetti saṃvidam | vāsanākāraṇaṃ paścādbuddhvā saṃpaśyati bhramam || 33 ||

Therefore, the inherent nature first perceives the consciousness | Later, understanding the cause of desires, one sees the delusion

tatkṣayācchamamāyāti draṣṭṛdṛśyadṛgāmayaḥ | tatsattāyāmudetīyaṃ saṃsṛtyākhyā piśācikā || 34 ||

From the destruction of that, the seer of the seen and the unseen attains peace | In that state, this is called the cycle of transmigration, the demoness

upalambha udetyādau brahmaṇo vāsanā tataḥ tacchāntiṃ viddhi nirvāṇaṃ tatsattāṃ saṃsṛtibhramam || 35 ||

The sense of separation arises first as a notion of Brahman. Know that the cessation of this is nirvana, while its existence is the delusion of worldly existence.

utpannaiva ca sānādau parabrahmaṇyasaṃbhavāt | utpannā samayādyāsau brahmaiva parameva sat || 36 ||

That which is born at the beginning is not born from the Supreme Brahman | That which is born from the beginning is Brahman itself, the Supreme.

etāvadyatparijñānaṃ tannirvāṇaṃ vidurbudhāḥ | yadatraivāparijñānaṃ taṃ bandhaṃ viddhi rāghava || 37 ||

Knowledge of this much is liberation, the wise know | Whatever ignorance is here, know that as bondage, O Raghava.

vijñānaghana evāyaṃ kacanākacanātmakaḥ | svayameva kacatyantarn na kacatyeva vā svayam || 38 ||

This consciousness is dense and consists of both the manifest and the unmanifest | It shines by itself within, or it does not shine at all.

saṃvidaṃśaparāvṛttimātre pelavarūpiṇi | bandhadṛṅmokṣadṛk ceti kleśastatsādhanaṃ kiyat || 39 ||

In the mere turning away from the aspect of consciousness, which is insignificant | The vision of bondage and liberation is suffering, and how much is its means?

saṃvidudvodhane bandhas tadanudvodhane śivam | asatsadvajjagadbhāti saṃvidudvodhanodaram || 40 ||

In the agitation of consciousness, there is bondage; in the non-agitation of consciousness, there is Shiva | The world appears as both real and unreal, full of the agitation of consciousness.

ajadaṃ vedaṃ suptaṃ mokṣa ityabhidhīyate | prabuddhaṃ bandha ityāhuryadicchasi tadāhara || 41 ||

The state of being unaware and asleep is called liberation | The state of being awake is called bondage | If you wish, bring that forth || 41 ||

427.79.42

nirvāṇavāsanamanantamanādyamacchabodhaikatānamapayantraṇamastaśaṅkam | advaitamaikyarahitaṃ ca nirastaśūnyamākāśakośaviśadāśayaśāntamāsv || 42 ||

Desire for nirvana, endless, without beginning, pure consciousness, without duality, without unity, without emptiness, clear like the sky, peaceful, be in that state || 42 ||
