śrīrāma uvācaanantaraṃ nabhaḥkośakuṃṭīkoṭarato munetava dhyānātprabuddhasya vṛttaṃ varṣaśatena kim || 1 ||
Sri Rama said: What happened to you, O sage, after you awoke from your meditation, which lasted for a hundred years, in the sky-vaulted cave?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvācatato dhyānātprabuddho'haṃ śrutavāṃstatra niḥsvanammṛdu vyaktapadaṃ hṛdyaṃ na ca vācyanugo yataḥ || 2 ||
Sri Vasistha said: Then, awakened from meditation, I heard there a soft, clear, and heart-touching sound, which was not in accordance with speech.
strīsvabhāvādiva mṛdu madhuraṃ vā ninādi vāsvalpāṅgatvādanirhrādi mayā tadvākyamūhitam || 3 ||
That speech was soft and sweet like the nature of a woman, or it was a sound, or it was faint due to shyness; thus, I uttered that speech.
indindirarutākāraṃ tantrīraṇitarañjanamna rodanaṃ ca paṭhanaṃ bisakośasamasvanam || 4 ||
It had the sound of thunder, the charming sound of a stringed instrument, neither crying nor reading, and the sound resembled the humming of bees.
tadākarṇyāśu tatredamahaṃ cintitavānathaśābdikānvīkṣaṇātpaśyandiśo daśa savismayaḥ || 5 ||
Hearing that, I immediately thought about it there and, looking around in all ten directions with wonder, saw this.
vyomno'yaṃ siddhasaṃcāramārgaśūnyānyanantaram | bhāgo yojanalakṣāṇi samatikramya saṃsthitaḥ || 6 ||
This part of the sky, devoid of the path of the Siddhas, is empty and endless, having crossed countless yojanas.
tadihedṛgvidhasya syātkutaḥ śabdasya saṃbhavaḥśābdikaṃ na ca paśyāmi yatnenāpi vilokayan || 7 ||
How can sound arise in such a void? Even with effort, I do not see any verbal form.
anantamidamāśūnyaṃ puro me nirmalaṃ nabhaḥiha bhūtaṃ prayatnena prekṣyamāṇaṃ na dṛśyate || 8 ||
This infinite void is pure and clear before me. Even with effort, what is here is not seen.
yad eti cintayitvāhaṃ bhūyobhūyo vilokayan | śabdeśvaraṃ na paśyāmi tadā cintitavān idam || 9 ||
Thinking about this again and again and looking carefully, I do not see the lord of sound. Then I thought this.
ākāśa eva bhūtvāham ākāśenaikatāṃ gataḥ | ākāśaguṇaśabdārthān karomy ākāśakośake || 10 ||
Having become the sky itself, I have merged with the sky. I perceive the qualities and meanings of sound in the space.
dehākāśamiha sthāpya dhyāneneha yathāsthitam | cidākāśavapurvyomnā yāmyaikyaṃ vārivāmbunā || 11 ||
Establishing the space of the body here through meditation as it is, I attained oneness with the sky of consciousness through the water of the sky.
cintayitvetihaṃ tyaktuṃ dehaṃ padmāsanasthitaḥ | āsaṃ samādhimādhātuṃ punarāmīlitekṣaṇaḥ || 12 ||
Having contemplated thus, I, seated in the lotus posture, intended to abandon the body and enter into meditation with eyes half-closed.
tyaktvā bāhyārthasaṃsparśānaindriyānāntarānapi | cittākāśo'hamabhavaṃ saṃvitspandamayātmakaḥ || 13 ||
Having abandoned external sensory contacts and internal senses, I became the space of consciousness, of the nature of the pulsation of awareness.
kramāttadapi saṃtyajya buddhitattvapadaṃ gataḥ | saṃpanno'haṃ cidākāśe jagajjālaikadarpaṇaḥ || 14 ||
Gradually abandoning even that, I attained the state of pure intellect and became complete in the space of consciousness, reflecting the entire universe as a single mirror.
tatastenasvabhāvena bhūtavyomaikatām aham | saṃprayāto'mbunaivāmbu saurabhaṃ saurabheṇa vā || 15 ||
Then, by that nature, I merged into the oneness of the elemental sky, moving towards the water with the water, fragrance with fragrance.
saṃpanno'tha mahākāśaṃ vyāpyānananto'tha sarvagaḥ | anākāro'pyanādhāraḥ sarvārthādhāratāṃ gataḥ || 16 ||
Having attained the great space, pervading the infinite, and being omnipresent, without form and without support, it has become the support of all things.
ahaṃ trailokyavṛndāni saṃsārāṇāṃ śatāni ca | tatra brahmāṇḍalakṣāṇi paśyāmyagaṇitānyapi || 17 ||
I see countless Brahmandas (universes) within the multitudes of the three worlds and the hundreds of existences.
parasparamadṛṣṭāni mithaḥ khānyamalāni ca | nānācāravicārāṇi śūnyānyeva parasparam || 18 ||
Mutually unseen, they are pure and empty, with various behaviors and thoughts, they are empty to each other.
svapnarūpāṇi suptānāṃ tulyakālaṃ nṛṇāmiva | mahārambhānumṛṣṭāni śūnyāni ca parasparam || 19 ||
Like dreams of sleeping people, they are of equal duration, created by great endeavors, and empty to each other.
jāyamānāni naśyanti vardhamānāni bhūriśaḥ | vartamānānyatītāni bhaviṣyanti ca sarvaśaḥ || 20 ||
Those that are born perish, those that grow decay, those that exist pass away, and all will become in the future.
anekacitrajālāni mahābhittīni khāni ca | manasevograrājyāni kṛtāni vividhairjanaiḥ || 21 ||
Many beautiful paintings, large walls, and mines have been created by various people with great mental effort.
nirāvaraṇarūpāṇi tathaikāvaraṇāni ca | pañcāvaraṇayuktāni ṣaḍekāvaraṇāni ca || 22 ||
Some are without any coverings, others have one covering, five coverings, six coverings, and so on.
daśāvaraṇacitrāṇi ṣoḍaśāvaraṇāni ca | caturviśatyāvṛtīni ṣaṭtriṃśatkhāvṛtāni ca || 23 ||
Some have ten coverings, sixteen coverings, twenty-four coverings, and thirty-six coverings.
śūnyāni bhūtapūrṇāni pañcabhūtamayānyapi | ekapṛthvyādibhūtāni catuḥpṛthvyādikāni ca || 24 ||
Some are empty, some are filled with elements, some are made of the five elements, some are made of one element like earth, and some are made of four elements starting with earth.
triḥpṛthvyādīni cānyāni dvipṛthvyādīnyathāpi ca | tathā saptamahābhūtānyekajātimayāni ca || 25 ||
Some are made of three elements starting with earth, others are made of two elements starting with earth, and some are made of the seven great elements of the same kind.
tvādṛśānubhavābhogaviruddhātidashāni tu | tathā nityāndhakārāṇi sūryādirahitāni ca || 26 ||
Those who experience contradictory states, always in darkness, devoid of the sun and other celestial bodies.
tathā mīlitasargāṇi ekanāthāvṛtāni ca | vilakṣaṇaprajēśāṃśavicitrācāravanti ca || 27 ||
Thus, the created beings are enveloped by a single lord, with diverse and strange behaviors of the lords of creation.
tathā nirvēdaśāstrāṇi niḥśāstrāṇi tathaiva ca | kṛmikramasamārambhadēvādiprāṇimanti ca || 28 ||
Thus, the scriptures of detachment and those without scriptures, as well as the beings starting from worms to gods.
jātyā tu pāramparyeṇa saṃkētācāravanti ca | tathā nityaprakāśāni jvalitāgnimayāni ca || 29 ||
By birth, through tradition, they follow symbolic practices, and thus they are eternally radiant, like blazing fire.
tathā jalaikapūrṇāni pavanaiakamayāni ca | stabdhāni paramākāśe vahanti ca tathāniśam || 30 ||
Thus, they are filled with water and air, stationary in the supreme space, and they carry continuously.
jāyamānāni puṣyanti paripuṣṭāni cābhitaḥ | tiryaggacchanti cānyāni pūrṇasarvamayānyapi || 31 ||
Some beings are born and grow, while others are fully developed and move sideways, even those that are complete in every way.
devamātraiakasargāṇi narāmātramayāni ca | daityavṛndamayānyeva kṛminirvivarāṇi ca || 32 ||
Some beings are created solely by the divine, others are human-like, some are demonic, and others are like worms and insects.
antarantastadantaśca svakośe'pyaṇukaṃ prati | jātāni jāyamānāni kadalīdalapīṭhavat || 33 ||
Within the innermost and the outermost, in every cell of their own body, beings are born and continue to be born, like the layers of a banana leaf.
parasparamadṛṣṭāni nānubhūtāni vai mithaḥ | sainikasvapnajālāni jātānīva mahāntyapi || 34 ||
Though perceived by each other, they are not experienced by each other, like the vast network of a soldier's dreams.
vividhānyapyanantāni svacchākāśātmakānyalam | anyonyamanyavṛttīni na mitho'nyasthitīni ca || 35 ||
Though diverse and infinite, they are pure and spacious by nature, not interdependent or situated in each other.
mithaścānyānyaśāstrāṇi mitho’nanantāni yāni ca | anyonyasanniveśāni mitho’nyonyāni yāni ca || 36 ||
There are various other scriptures and countless others, and there are those that are interconnected with each other, and there are those that are mutually interdependent.
anyonyaṃ paralokāni mithaḥ siddhapurāṇi ca | anyādṛśamahābhūtānyanyādṛgdiggiriṇi ca || 37 ||
There are other worlds and accomplished ancient texts, and there are great elements and directions that are different from each other.
tvādṛśānubhavehānāmagamyābhyāgatāni ca | asamañjasarūpāṇi kathyamānāni mādṛśaiḥ o || 38 ||
Those who have experiences like yours are unable to comprehend these incomprehensible and inconsistent forms that are being described by people like me.
aṇuvatsyeṣyamāṇāni cidādityāṃśumaṇḍale | paramārthaśriyo vyomni raśmijālāni kuṇḍale || 39 ||
The minute particles that will remain in the orb of the sun of consciousness, the ultimate truth's glory in the sky, and the network of rays in the coil.
kānicittāni tānyeva bhūtvā bhūtvā bhavatyalaṃ | kānicittādṛśānyeva jātāni vanaparṇavat || 40 ||
Some of these become sufficient by becoming what they are, and some are born like the leaves of a tree.
anyonyatvācca sadṛśānyanyāni sadṛśānyapi | kañcitkālaṃ susadṛśānyanyānyeva ca kānicit || 41 ||
Due to mutuality, some similar things are similar to each other, and some are very similar for a certain period.
phalāni tānyanantāni paramārthamahātaroḥ | ananyānyeva cānyāni tanmayānyeva vai tataḥ || 42 ||
The fruits of those infinite great truths are not different from each other, and they are indeed pervaded by that.
kānicitsvalpakalpāni dīrghakalpāni kānicit | anyānyaniyataṃ bhūri niyataṃ bhūri kānicit || 43 ||
Some are of short duration, some are of long duration, some are abundant and fixed, and some are abundant and not fixed.
anyānyajñātakālāni yadṛcchāvaśataḥ svayam | jāyamānāni puṣṭāni susthirāṇi sthitāni ca || 44 ||
Some are born, nourished, stable, and established by themselves at unknown times by chance.
tāni śūnyatvajālāni paramākāśakośake | aparijñātakālāni rūḍhānyajñātadoṣake || 45 ||
Those are the networks of emptiness in the supreme space, unknown in time, established in unknown faults.
abdhyarkākāśameruvādi śatirāvalitānyalam | ciccmatkārakhe svapnajālānyābhānti cāvilam || 46 ||
The ocean, the sun, the sky, the earth, and other elements are covered by hundreds of waves, but in the space of consciousness, they appear like a web of dreams, without any real substance.
anubhūterbharmātmatvātkāraṇānāmabhāvataḥ | pṛthvyādīnāmahetūnāmatyantaṃ santyasantica || 47 ||
Due to the illusory nature of perception, the causes of the elements like earth do not truly exist, and thus, they both exist and do not exist.
mṛgatṛṣṇāmbubharavaddvicandravyomavarṇavat | saṃpannāni na satyāni satyānyapyanubhūtitḥ || 48 ||
Like the mirage water and the double moon in the sky, the elements are perceived as real but are not truly real.
citsaṃkalpanabhasyeva bhāsamānāni bhūriśaḥ | vāsanāvātanunnāni viluṭhantyātmaceṣṭitaiḥ || 49 ||
Like the sky of mental constructs, the elements appear abundantly, driven by the winds of impressions, and dissolve through the activities of the self.
surāsurādimashakā bahuśodumbaradrumē | phalāni rasapūrṇāni ghūrṇamānāni mārutaiḥ || 50 ||
Like the gods, demons, and other beings, the numerous fig trees bear fruits full of juice, swaying in the wind.
abhijātasvabhāvasya sargārambhakarasya ca | śuddhacittattvabālasya saṃkalpanagarāṇi khe || 51 ||
The pure essence of the child-like mind, which is the beginning of creation and of noble nature, imagines cities in the sky.
tvamahaṃ sa idaṃ ceti dhiyā baladṛḍhānyalam | saṃpannānyarkadīptyeva paṅkakrīḍanakāni ca || 52 ||
With the strong intellect, the thoughts of 'I am this' are firm, like the sun's radiance, and they play in the mud like children.
vṛttāni rasśālinyā niyatyā nityatṛptyā | vanānyugraphalānīva vasantarasalervayā || 53 ||
The actions are filled with joy, bound by destiny, and always satisfied, like forests bearing abundant fruits in the joy of spring.
mahākartṛṇyakartṛṇi na kṛtānyeva khāni vā | svayaṃ saṃpannarūpāṇi cidvyonyeva kṛtāni vā || 54 ||
The great doers are not the doers, nor are they made by anyone else. They are self-fulfilled, as if created by the pure consciousness itself.
paramārthamayānyeva tadanyadvoditānyapi | alabdhānyeva labdhāni sadā'santyeva santi ca || 55 ||
The ultimate truth is always present, even when it is described differently. The unattained is always attained, and the non-existent always exists.
caturdaśadaśaikādividhabhūtagaṇāni ca | punastānyeva tānyantarananyānyanyānyatho bahiḥ || 56 ||
The various beings, such as the fourteen, ten, one, and so on, are again those very beings, different internally and externally.
narakasvargapātālabandhumitramayānyapi | mahārambhamayānyeva śūnyāni paramārthatḥ || 57 ||
Even those that are hell, heaven, underworld, relatives, and friends are merely grand creations and are ultimately empty in reality.
kṣīrāmbudherjalānīva snehasārāṇi sarvataḥ | taraṅgabhaṅgurāṇyantarbahiścāvṛttimanti ca || 58 ||
Like the waters of the ocean of milk, they are the essence of affection everywhere, with wavy movements internally and externally.
ābhāsamātrarūpāṇi tejasyātmavivasvataḥ | jātānīva svatastāni spandanāni nabhasvataḥ || 59 ||
They are mere appearances, the forms of the radiant self-luminous essence, as if born of themselves, like the vibrations of the sky.
vṛkṣarūpāṇi patrāṇāṃ buddhyahaṃkāracetasām | asatāmapyasantyeva svapne nyastanṛṇāmiva || 60 ||
The forms of trees are like the leaves, intellect, ego, and consciousness of the unreal, as if they are non-existent, like debts placed in a dream.
purāṇavedasiddhāntakalpanātalpapāliṣu ghananidrāṇi suptāni bibhranti śavatāmiva || 61 ||
In the beds of the Puranas, Vedas, and philosophical theories, they sleep deeply, as if they were corpses.
paramārthamahāraṇye cidgandharvakṛtāni vai sūryadīpakadīptāni gṛhāṇi gahanātmani || 62 ||
In the great forest of ultimate truth, the houses created by the celestial beings of consciousness are illuminated by the sun-like lamps, deep within.
prajāyamānāni nabhasyanante viśīryamāṇāni ca nirnimittam tadā tvahaṃ vai timirākṣadṛṣṭakeśoṇḍrakānīva jagantyapaśyam || 63 ||
At that time, I saw the universe as if it were being born and dissolving endlessly in the infinite sky without any cause, like dark-eyed and hair-tufted beings.
