17.45.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti viśrāntavāneṣa manohariṇako'rihan | tatraiva ratimāyāti na yāti viṭapāntaram || 1 ||

Shri Vasishtha said: Thus, the enemy-killing beautiful one rests there; he finds delight in that very place and does not go to another tree.

etāvatātha kālena sa vivekadrumaḥ phalam | antaḥsthaṃ paramārthātma śanaiḥ prakaṭayaty alam || 2 ||

In this short time, the tree of discrimination bears fruit; it gradually reveals the inner, supreme reality.

dhyānadrumaphalaṃ puṇyau tadasau svamanomṛgaḥ | adhaḥsthitaḥ prāntagataṃ tasya paśyati sattaroḥ || 3 ||

The fruit of the tree of meditation is pure; that deer of the mind, situated below, sees the end of that being.

ārohati naro vṛkṣaṃ tadāsvādayituṃ phalam | anyavargaparityāgo vitatādhyavasāyavān || 4 ||

A person climbs the tree to taste its fruit; abandoning other groups, he is determined.

vivekavṛkṣapānnāma vṛttīstyajati bhūgatāḥ | unnataṃ padamāsādya bhūyo nādhaḥ samīhate || 5 ||

Having reached the elevated state by the fruit of the tree of discrimination, one abandons worldly tendencies and does not desire to descend again.

67.45.6

tenottamaphalārtheṇa saṃskārānprāktanānasau | vivekapādapārūḍhastyajatyahiriva tvacaṃ || 6 ||

By that highest goal, he renounces all past conditioning, as a snake sheds its skin, having ascended the tree of discrimination.

hasatyuccaiḥ padārūḍhamātmānabhavalokayan | etāvantamahaṃ kālaṃ kṛpaṇaḥ ko'bhavaṃ tviti || 7 ||

Laughing loudly, he looks at his own self, wondering, 'For so long, who was I, so miserable?'

karuṇādiṣu teṣvasyabhramañchākhāntareṣu saḥ | lobhavyālamadhaḥ kurvansamrāḍiva virājate || 8 ||

In compassion and other such branches, he wanders, subduing the serpent of greed, shining like an emperor.

97.45.9

hṛdayendorgalaśreṇī duḥkhābjatimirāvaliḥ | kṛṣṇāyaḥśṛṅkhalātṛṣṇā dinānudinamujjhati || 9 ||

The chain of sorrows in the heart, the darkness of the lotus of suffering, the thirst for the iron chain, he abandons day by day.

upekṣate na saṃprāptaṃ nāprāptamabhivāñchati | somasauMyo bhavatyantaḥ śītalaḥ sarvavṛttiṣu || 10 ||

He does not neglect what has been attained, nor does he desire what has not been attained. He becomes calm and cool in all activities.

śāstrārthapallaveṣveva niṣaṇṇātmāvatiṣṭhateunnatāvanatā yātā adhaḥ paśyañjagadgatīḥ || 11 ||

The self, established in the tender leaves of the meaning of the scriptures, sees the world's course, which has gone up and down.

bhīmadrumalatotkīrṇapuṣpaprakaradanturāḥprāktanīḥ svāḥ sthalīḥ paśyanhasatyantarvarākatām || 12 ||

Seeing the former places, which are scattered with flowers and are rough with the creepers of the terrible trees, they are laughing at the extreme inner beauty.

teṣu tatskandhadeśeṣu tathoḍḍīnaviḍīnayāhāriṇyā viharañjātyā rājeva parirājate || 13 ||

In those places, on the shoulders of the trees, with the movement of the branches, the lion roams like a king.

putradārasamagrāṇi mitrāṇi ca dhanāni cajanmāntarakṛtānīva svapnajānīva paśyati || 14 ||

He sees sons, wives, friends, and wealth as if they were created in a previous life or in a dream.

rāgadveṣabhayonmādamānamohamahattayānaṭasyevāsya dṛśyante śītalāmalacetasaḥ || 15 ||

With the greatness of attachment, hatred, fear, pride, delusion, and ego, these appear like a dance, with a calm and pure mind.

unmattaceṣṭitākārā hasatyapi purogatāḥ | taraṅgabhaṅgurādhārāḥ saṃsārasarito gatīḥ || 16 ||

Those who are driven by mad actions, even though they laugh and move forward, have unstable foundations like the waves of the river of worldly life.

He does not think about any worldly desires for wealth or women. Resting in the supreme state, he lives like a corpse.

kevalaṃ kevale śuddhe bodhātmani mahonnate | dattadṛṣṭiḥ phale tasminparaṃ samadhirohati || 18 ||

Only in the pure, supreme consciousness, one's vision is fixed on the ultimate fruit, and one attains the highest meditation.

smṛtvā smṛtvāpadḥ pūrva saṃtoṣāmṛtapoṣitaḥ | arthānāmapyanarthānāṃ nāśeṣu parituṣyati || 19 ||

Remembering the past calamities and nourished by the nectar of contentment, one is satisfied even in the destruction of wealth and misfortunes.

vyavahāreṣu kāryeṣu bhogasaṃpādakeṣvapi | paramudvegamāyāti sanidra iva bodhitaḥ || 20 ||

In worldly activities and actions that bring enjoyment, one experiences great agitation, as if awakened from sleep.

dīrghādhyaga ivodārāmanāratamabādhitām | ciraṃ maurkhyśramākrānto viśrāntimabhivāñchati || 21 ||

Like a long-suffering person, afflicted by continuous distress, one who is exhausted by the labor of ignorance for a long time seeks rest.

227.45.22

niḥśvāsabodhito’pyagniranindhana ivātmani | śvāsamātrasamo’pyantaratiṣṭhannēva śāmyati || 22 ||

Even if the fire is indicated by breath, it remains without fuel in the self. Even if it is equal to mere breath, it remains within and is pacified.

āpatantīṃ balādeva padārtheṣvaratiṃ śanaiḥ | na śaknoti nirākartuṃ dṛṣṭimatra cyutāmiva || 23 ||

Forcibly, the attraction towards objects gradually increases. One cannot remove the gaze that is fixed on them, as if it has fallen there.

tāṃ mahāpadavīṃ gacchanparamārthaphalapradāmbhūmikāmapyupāyāti vacasāmapyagocarām || 24 ||

One who is on the great path, even though it is difficult to reach, attains the ultimate fruit by means of speech and other methods.

kuto'pyaceṣṭiteṣveva saṃprāpteṣu vidhervaśātbhogeṣvaratimāyāti pāntho marumahīṣviva || 25 ||

Even if efforts are not made, one attains the highest enjoyment by the will of destiny, like a traveler in the desert.

ghūrṇaḥ kṣīṇa ivānandī suptaḥ saṃsāravṛttiṣu antaḥpūrṇamanā maunī kāmapi sthitimṛcchati || 26 ||

The one who is dizzy, weak, and joyless, as if asleep in the worldly affairs, with a mind full of inner contentment and silent, attains any position.

sa tādṛgrūpatāmetya paramārthaphalasya tat kramānnikaṭamāpnoti khago'gapadavīmiva || 27 ||

Having attained such a state, he gradually approaches the supreme goal, like a bird approaching the sky.

tatastadakhilāṃ buddhiṃ vihāya viyatā samaḥ gṛhṇātyathāsvādayati bhuṅkte'tha paritṛpyati || 28 ||

Then, abandoning all thoughts, he becomes one with the sky, takes, enjoys, and then becomes satisfied.

saṅkalpārthaparityāgāddinānudinamātatā śuddhasvabhāvaviśrāntiḥ paramārthāptirucyate || 29 ||

By abandoning all desires and intentions, day by day, one attains the supreme goal, which is the rest in one's pure nature.

bhedabuddhirvilīnārthā'bheda evāvaśiṣyate śuddham ekam anādyantaṃ tadbrahmeti vidurbudhāḥ || 30 ||

When the perception of duality dissolves, only non-duality remains, which is pure, one, without beginning or end, and that is known as Brahman by the wise.

lokaiṣaṇāviraktēna tyaktadāraiṣaṇēna ca | dhanaiṣaṇāvimuktēna tasminviśramyatē padē || 31 ||

One who is detached from worldly desires, who has renounced the desire for a wife, and who is free from the desire for wealth, finds rest in that state.

pareṇa pariṇāmēna mithaścitparamārthayōḥ | tāpēna himalēkhēva bhēdabuddhirvilīyatē || 32 ||

By the ultimate transformation, the distinction between the individual consciousness and the ultimate reality dissolves like a line of snow melting under heat.

tajjñasyākṛṣṭamuktasya svabhāvēṣūpamāṃ vinā | sthitiḥ sragdāmakasyēva na saṃbhavati kācana || 33 ||

For the one who knows the truth and is liberated, there is no existence without the analogy of one's own nature, just as a garland cannot exist without a thread.

yathā'prakaṭitāṅgāntaḥsaṃsthitā śālabhañjikā | na satī nāsatī stambhē tathā viśvasthitiḥ parē || 34 ||

Just as a locust hidden inside a blade of grass is neither existent nor non-existent in the stalk, so is the state of the universe in the ultimate reality.

dhyānaṃ na śakyatē kartuṃ na caitadupayujyatē | abōdhēna vibuddhas tu svayamatraiva tiṣṭhati || 35 ||

Meditation cannot be done, nor is it useful. The enlightened one, through ignorance, stands by himself here.

ātyantikī virasatā yasya dṛśyeṣu dṛśyate | sa buddho nā prabuddhasya dṛśyatyāge hi śaktatā || 36 ||

The ultimate insipidity is seen in the perceptions of one who is not awakened; the ability to renounce perceptions is the power of the awakened one.

dṛśyasya bodhatābodho yo bodhādaparikṣayaḥ | sa samādhānaśabdena procyate susamāhiteḥ || 37 ||

The awareness of the perception that does not diminish from awareness is called samādhi by the well-concentrated.

draṣṭṛdṛśyaiokatārūpaḥ pratyayo manaso yadā | sa tadekasamādhāne tadā viśrāmyati svayam || 38 ||

When the mind's conviction is in the form of the unity of the seer and the seen, then it rests in that single samādhi.

svabhāvo dṛśyavairasyameva tattvavido nijaḥ | dṛśyaspandanamevāhuratattvajñatvamuttamāḥ || 39 ||

The nature of the knower of reality is the enmity towards the seen; the supreme ones call the non-knowledge of reality the fluctuation of the seen.

atajjñāyaiva viṣayāḥ svadante na tu tadvidaḥ | na hi pītāmṛtāyāntaḥ svadate kaṭu kāñjikam || 40 ||

Only to the ignorant do objects appear pleasant; not so to the knower of reality. For one who has tasted the nectar of immortality, sour gruel does not taste pleasant.

vitṛṣṇasyātmaniṣṭhatvādeṣaṇātrayamujjhataḥ | jñasyāpyanicchatō dhyānamarthāyātaṃ pravartatē || 41 ||

Due to the self-centeredness of the one who is free from desire, abandoning the three desires, meditation spontaneously arises even for the wise one who does not wish for it.

bodhaḥ sphurati tṛṣṇāyāḥ saiva yasya na vidyatē | tasya svarūpamutsṛjya kvāsau tiṣṭhati kaḥ katham || 42 ||

Enlightenment shines forth when desire itself does not exist. For one who has abandoned their true nature, where does that person stand and how?

jñasyānārādhakō dhyeyabodhō nayatu yō bhavēt | anantā sā vitṛṣṇasya nirvibhāgōditaḥ svayam || 43 ||

The meditation on knowledge that does not worship the knower, let it lead to that which is infinite. That is spontaneously expressed as undivided for the one who is free from desire.

anantamapatṛṣṇasya svayameva pravartatē | dhyānaṃ galitapakṣasya saṃsthānamiva bhūbhṛtaḥ || 44 ||

For the one who is free from desire, the infinite spontaneously arises. Meditation is like the stable state of the earth-bearer whose wings have melted.

śuddhabodhātmani jñatvādasamāhitatōditā | na jātu susamiddhē'gnau ghṛtavindōravasthitiḥ || 45 ||

In the pure consciousness of the self, arising from the state of non-concentration, there is never a state of ghee droplets in a well-kindled fire.

paraṃ viṣayavaitṛṣṇyaṃ samādhānamudāhṛtam | āhṛtaṃ yena tannūnaṃ tasmai nṛbrahmaṇe namaḥ || 46 ||

The highest dispassion towards worldly objects is called samadhi | I bow to the one who has attained this, the human Brahman

nūnaṃ viṣayavaitṛṣṇye pariprauḍhimupāgate | na śaknuvanti nirhartuṃ dhyānaṃ sendrāḥ surāsurāḥ || 47 ||

When one attains the highest level of dispassion towards worldly objects, even the gods and demons with Indra cannot disturb the meditation

paraṃ viṣayavaitṛṣṇyaṃ vajradhyānaṃ prasādhyatām | bhede vigalite jñānādanyadhyānatṛṇena kim || 48 ||

May the highest dispassion towards worldly objects be accomplished through vajra meditation | When the distinction is dissolved through knowledge, what is the use of other meditations

mūrkhastho viśvaśabdārtho nāmūrkhaviṣayastathā | tajjñājñayostayoścaiva viśvaviśveśayostathā || 49 ||

The meaning of the word 'world' is not for the foolish | Similarly, it is not a subject for the foolish | Thus, it is for the knower and the non-knower, and for the world and the lord of the world

yatraikībhūya kacanaṃ tatra viśrāmyatāṃ budhāḥ | bodhabhūmiṣu siddhānāmarthānāṃ vā vivekinām || 50 ||

Where there is oneness, let the wise rest there | In the realms of enlightenment of the accomplished ones or in the meanings of the discerning

sattāsattē dvayaikeyē ca nirṇītē nēha kēnacit | upāya ēkaḥ śāstrārthō dvitīyō jñasamāgamaḥ || 51 ||

In the unity of existence and non-existence, nothing is determined by anyone. The first means is the understanding of scriptures, the second is the meeting of the wise.

dhyānaṃ tṛtīyaṃ nirvāṇē śrēṣṭhas tatrot tarōt tarōt tarōt | jīvādarśānmithō rūpaṃ gṛhṇātyēṣā mahadvapuḥ || 52 ||

Meditation is the third means in achieving liberation, which is the best. This great form perceives the form of the self from the mirror of the soul.

jagatyudeti saṃghaṭṭādāviśēṣaṃ samē samē | jñātapūrvāparāśēṣajagadaṣṭāpadasthitēḥ || 53 ||

The world arises from the union of the indistinguishable and the same. It is known that the entire universe is established in the eight-fold path.

ēkasiddhau dvayōḥ siddhirbōdhavaitṛṣṇyadīpayōḥ | mativātyādhutō vyōmni dagdhō jñānāgninākhilaḥ || 54 ||

In the attainment of one, the attainment of both is achieved, of knowledge and desire for knowledge. The entire intellect is burned by the fire of knowledge in the sky.

jagattūlaḥ parē śāntē na jānē kvāśu gacchati | citrāgninēva bōdhēna tēna jāḍyaṃ na śāmyati || 55 ||

The world is like a cotton ball in the ultimate peace, I do not know where it goes quickly. Like a colorful fire, knowledge does not extinguish ignorance.

nirmūlāpi jagadbhrāntiryenāśu na vilīyate | yathājñasya jagajjñaptirapajñānātpradīpyate || 56 ||

Even the rootless delusion of the world does not dissolve quickly. Just as the ignorance of an ignorant person is illuminated by knowledge.

tathā jñasya parijñānāttadajñaptiḥ pradīpyate | tajjñasyājñajagajjñaptiśabdārtharahitā sthitā || 57 ||

Similarly, the knowledge of the knower illuminates that ignorance. The ignorance of the knower is devoid of word and meaning, and it is established.

yathāsthitaiava trijagajjñaptiścittriva udita | śūnyatvenaiva racitā suptatveneva nirmitā || 58 ||

Just as it is, the knowledge of the three worlds is manifested as if it were a picture. It is created as if it were empty, and it is formed as if it were asleep.

bhāsate bhāmayī vāñchā jagajjñaptirjñacetasi | nūnaṃ bodhe'vimūḍhasya nāhaṃtā na jagatsthitiḥ || 59 ||

The delusive desire shines in the mind of the knower. Indeed, in the realization of the undeluded, there is no sense of 'I' nor the existence of the world.

bhāsate paramābhāsarūpiṇaḥ kāpyavasthitiḥ | bodhābodhātmakaṃ cittaṃ bhāti śuṣkārdrakeṣṭhavat || 60 ||

The supreme luminous form shines in some state. The mind, which is the nature of knowledge and ignorance, appears like dry and wet wood.

bodhādekaṃ jagadbhāvairjāḍyānnātmatvamāgatam | mitho bodhāddvivadati maitrīṃ bhajati bodhataḥ || 61 ||

From awareness, the world appears as inert and does not attain the state of the self | From mutual awareness, it speaks of duality and experiences friendship from awareness

ya evāsyādhiko bhāgastanmayatvena tiṣṭhati | budhaḥ satattvaṃ nāvaiti jagato'bhāvabhāvayoḥ || 62 ||

That which is the supreme part of it, abides in the state of that | The wise one does not attain the reality of the world's existence and non-existence

jāgratsvapnasuṣuptānāṃ svabhāvamiva turyagaḥ | vāsanāiva manaḥ seyaṃ svavicāreṇa naśyati || 63 ||

The fourth state is like the nature of the waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states | This mind, which is merely a tendency, is destroyed by self-inquiry

avastutvādato mokṣo nātmanāśe pravartate || 64 ||

Therefore, liberation does not occur from the destruction of the self

dhyānadrumātsvayamupoḍhamanalpapākātkālena bodhamupayātavataḥ kramena | bhuktvā rasāyanaphalaṃ parabodhamādyamicchanmanohariṇako nigaḍādvimuktaḥ || 65 ||

From the tree of meditation, spontaneously bearing abundant fruit, over time, one attains knowledge gradually | Having enjoyed the fruit of rejuvenation, desiring the primordial supreme knowledge, the mind-deer is freed from the shackles
