Vasishtha said: The ego itself is the supreme ignorance that obstructs the path to liberation. It is followed by the foolish, and such behavior is like that of a madman.
ahaṃtaiva alam ajñānād ajñatvasya nidarśanam | na hi taj jñasya śāntasya mamāham iti vidyate || 2 ||
The ego itself is sufficient for ignorance; it is the indication of ignorance. Indeed, for the wise and peaceful person, the sense of 'I' and 'mine' does not exist.
Having abandoned the impurity of ego, one becomes liberated like the pure sky. Whether in the body or without the body, the wise one remains free from afflictions.
dhūmasya sphurato vyomni yathā gajarathādayaḥ | vyūhā dhūmānna te bhinnāstathā sargāḥ pare pade || 10 ||
Just as the forms of elephants and chariots appear in the sky from the smoke, those forms are not different from the smoke. Similarly, the creations are not different from the supreme reality.
Through the investigation of the delusion of consciousness, those who delight in the attainment of delusion, do not succumb to despair, for you possess the knowledge of the knower.
rūpālokamanasaḥsattā jvālārciṣviva daṇḍatā | satyopi ca na santyetā bhrānteścittābalā iva || 13 ||
The forms, perceptions, and mental states are like the flickering of a flame, even though they appear real, they are not, like the illusions of a confused mind.
iṣṭāniṣṭopalambheṣu śānto vyavaharannapi | śavavannānyatāmantrarnirvāṇo'nubhavaty alam || 15 ||
Even while experiencing desirable and undesirable situations, remaining peaceful, like a corpse, without any internal difference, one experiences liberation.
The one who destroys the desires of the mind sustains the eternal world | Both the living and the non-living, that conscious being is the supreme state || 16 ||
Through the investigation of the renunciation of enjoyment and the self's power, one realizes that nothing else is useful here. Thus, the ignorant should quickly surrender to their own self.
Thus, they declare that meditation is the expulsion of ignorance. Without liberation, it does not exist. And never does enlightenment arise from knowledge. Here, the supreme awakening is not a belief, because from that arises long-lasting bondage.
jagadahamasadityupetya samyagjanadhanadāraśarīranirvyapekṣaḥbhavati hi sa ca cetanasvarūpaḥ parimitakhaṃ khalu nānyathāsti muktiḥ || 25 ||
By realizing 'I am not the world,' one becomes independent of wealth, wife, and body. Indeed, that one is of the nature of consciousness. There is no other liberation.
