17.206.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadakāraṇakaṃ bhāti bhānaṃ tannaiva kiṃcana | tattathā paramārtheṇa paramārthaḥ sthito'nagha || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: That which appears without a cause is not real. That is the ultimate truth, O sinless one.

atremam kenacitpṛṣṭo'yamaham taṃ mahāmate | samyagbodhasya puṣṭyarthaṃ mahāpraśnaṃ paraṃ śṛṇu || 2 ||

Here, I was asked by someone about this. O wise one, listen to the great question for the nourishment of true knowledge.

astyabdhibhyāmubhayato vyāptaṃ khyātaṃ jagattraye | kuśadvīpamiti dvīpaṃ bhūmau valayavatsthitam || 3 ||

There is a famous island known as Kushadvipa, surrounded by oceans on both sides, situated on the earth in the form of a ring.

tatrāstīlāvatī nāma haimī pūrvottare purī | dīptijvālāmayastambhaprotāvaninabhastalā || 4 ||

There is a city named Ilavati, made of gold, located in the northeast, with pillars of shining flames, extending to the sky.

pūrve tasyāmabhūdrājā prajñaptiriti viśrutaḥ | anuraktajagadbhūtaḥ śakraḥ svarga ivāparaḥ || 5 ||

In the east of that city, there was a famous king named Prajñapti, who was beloved by all beings, like another Indra in heaven.

kenacitkāraṇenāhaṃ kadācittasya bhūpateḥ| prāptaḥ samīpaṃ nabhasaḥ pralayārka iva cyutaḥ || 6 ||

By some reason, I once reached the vicinity of that king, like the sun falling from the sky at the time of dissolution.

puṣpārghyācamanīyairmāṃ pūjayitvopaviśya saḥ| madhye kathāyāṃ kasyāṃcidapṛcchatpraṇayādidam || 7 ||

Having worshipped me with flowers, water, and other offerings, he sat down and, in the midst of some conversation, asked me this with affection.

bhagavansarvasaṃhāre jāte śūnyatate sthite| avācye parame vyomni sarvakāraṇasaṃkṣaye || 8 ||

O Lord, when the complete destruction occurs, and everything is in a state of emptiness, in the indescribable supreme sky, where all causes are dissolved.

sargārambhasya bhūyaḥ syādvada kiṃ mūlakāraṇam| kāni vā sahakārīṇi kāraṇāni kutaḥ katham || 9 ||

Tell me, what is the root cause for the beginning of creation again? And what are the assisting causes, from where and how?

kiṃ jagatkiṃ ca sargādi kāścinnityaṃ tamodharāḥ| vyomasansthārṇavāḥ kāścitkāścitsṛmikulākulāḥ || 10 ||

What is the world? And what is the beginning of creation? Are there some eternal abodes of darkness? Are there some oceans situated in the sky? Are there some filled with worms?

kāścidākāśakośasthāḥ kāściccopalakośagāḥ | kiṃca vā bhūtabhūtādi kuto buddhyādayaḥ katham || 11 ||

Some are in the space-container, some are in the stone-container | What then is the origin of the elements and the intellect, etc.? How?

Who is the doer, and who is the seer? What is the relationship between the support and the supported? There is no great destruction of the worlds, this is certain.

samastavedaśāstrārthāvirodhāya samarthitaḥ | yathā saṃvedanaṃ nāma tathā nāmānubhūtayaḥ || 13 ||

To avoid contradiction with the meaning of all Vedic scriptures, it is justified | Just as there is perception, so there are experiences of names.

yatastato vedanaṃ syātkimanāśamasanmayam | anyacca jambūdvīpādau deśe'dya munināyaka || 14 ||

From that, perception arises, what is imperishable and true | Moreover, in the land of Jambudvipa and other places, O sage leader.

mṛtānāmagni dagdhānāmiha vā dehanāśinām | narakasvargabhogāya videhe dehakāraṇam || 15 ||

For the dead, burned by fire, or whose bodies are destroyed here | In the disembodied state, the body is the cause of enjoyment in hell and heaven.

kiṃ tatsyātsahakārīṇi kāraṇānyatha kāni vā dharmādharmāvamūrtau dvau tasyāmūrtasya mūrtatā || 16 ||

What are the causes that are cooperative, or what are the other causes? Dharma and adharma are two formless entities; how does the formless attain form?

nirdravyaṃ kurute dravyairyuktirityasamañjasā mātāpitrādyabhāvo hi bījaṃ kiṃ tatra kāraṇam || 17 ||

It is illogical to say that the formless is created by material causes. The absence of parents and other factors is the seed; what is the cause there?

anye vā hetavaḥ ke syuḥ kathaṃ dravyādisaṃbhavaḥ paraloko'sya nāstīti yathāsaṃvedanaṃ sthiteḥ || 18 ||

What other causes could there be? How can there be the creation of material things? It is said that there is no other world; how is this perception established?

samastalokavedādivirodhāccāsamañjasaṃ anicchitehaitairdūradeśāntaragataiḥ phalam || 19 ||

It is inconsistent due to the contradiction with all the worlds and the Vedas. How can the result be obtained by those who are in distant lands and do not desire benefit?

prajā prāpnotyasaṃbandhairamūrtairatra kaḥ kramaḥ stambho vareṇa sauvarṇo vinā hemagamāgamaiḥ || 20 ||

How does one obtain progeny through formless entities without any connection? What is the sequence here? A pillar becomes golden without the coming and going of gold.

kṣaṇātsaṃpadyate tatra saṃpattiḥ kathamucyatām | vidhīnāṃ pratiṣedhānāṃ nirnimittaṃ vivalgatām || 21 ||

How can it be said that prosperity is achieved there in an instant? How can the injunctions and prohibitions be without cause?

rūḍhānāmapyarūḍhānāṃ kiṃ prayojanamucyatām | asadāsījjagatpūrvaṃ satsaṃpannamanantaram || 22 ||

What is the purpose of both the established and the unestablished? Previously, the world was non-existent, and subsequently, it became existent and prosperous.

iti śruteḥ kathaṃ brahman kathyatāṃ saṃgatārthatā | ayaṃ bhavet kathaṃ brahmā bhaveccettanmahāmune || 23 ||

O Brahman, how can the consistency of this heard statement be explained? How can this become Brahma, O great sage, if it were to be?

evaṃprabhāvānnabhasaḥ kiṃ sarvasmānna jāyate | oṣadhīnāmathārthānāṃ sarveṣāṃ vā sthitiṃ gatāḥ || 24 ||

With such influence, why does everything not arise from the sky? Or have all herbs and objects attained stability?

kathaṃ svabhāvāḥ kathaya yathābodhaṃ munīśvara | ekasya jīvitaṃ puṃsaḥ suhṛdā maraṇaṃ dviṣā || 25 ||

O lord of sages, explain the nature of things as you understand them. The life of one person is a friend's death to another.

mṛtvārthitaṃ prayāgādau kṣetre tatkathamucyatām | khe syāmakṣayapūrṇenduriti dhyāyicitaiḥ phalaiḥ || 26 ||

In the holy place of Prayag and others, how is the desire for death expressed? In the sky, I will be like the full moon that never wanes, meditating on such fruits.

tulyakālamanuprāptaiḥ sahasrendu na kiṃ nabhaḥ | anyacca dhyāyināṃ lakṣairdhyātaikā strī yathākramam || 27 ||

Those who have attained the same time, a thousand moons, what is the sky? And another, by meditating on hundreds of thousands, one woman is meditated upon in sequence.

jāyātvena samaṃ kālaṃ labdhaṃ dhyānaphalaṃ ca taiḥ | sādhvyasādhvī gṛhe bhartuḥ saṃsthitā tapasā parā || 28 ||

By being a wife, the same time was obtained, and the fruit of meditation was also obtained by them. The virtuous and non-virtuous wife is established in the husband's house with supreme austerity.

teṣāṃ ca jāyā saṃpannā kathametanmahāmune | gṛhānirgacchamākalpaṃ nṛpaḥ sa dvīpasaptake || 29 ||

And their wife is accomplished, how is this, O great sage? The king, having left home, wanders in the seven islands for a kalpa.

varatvaṃ varaśāpābhyāmiti antaḥ kva tiṣṭhati | dānadharmāditapasāmaurdhvadehikakarmaṇām || 30 ||

The boon and the curse, where does it end? Of charity, duty, austerity, and other ascetic acts.

ihasthānāmamūrtānāṃ mūrtaṃ prītyāsti satphalam| vyavahartā na mūrto'tra vidyate lokayordvayoḥ || 31 ||

In this world, the embodied beings experience the fruits of their actions| There is no embodied transactor here in both worlds

deśāntare bhṛśaṃ jīvo bhṛśaṃ kālāntare'pi vā| phalaṃ saṃbhavatīyattadvinānubhavanaṃ mune || 32 ||

In another place, the soul intensely experiences| In another time as well, the fruit arises without experience, O sage

asamañjasamevāti kathaṃ syātsusamañjasam| ityādisaṃśayagaṇaṃ girā śītāvadātayā| chindhi me'bhyuditaṃ bhāsā sāndhyamāndhyamivodupaḥ || 33 ||

How can the improper become proper?| O sage, with your cool and soothing words, dispel this doubt and others like the setting sun dispels darkness

paramavastuni saṃśayanāśanādubhayalokahitaṃ bhavati sphuṭam| tadih me kuru sādhusamāgamas tanuphalo bhavatīha na kasyacit || 34 ||

By removing doubts about the ultimate reality, the welfare of both worlds becomes clear| Therefore, O sage, make this good union for me, the fruit of which is not for anyone else
