Vasishtha said: The knowledge of the self, the knowledge of non-existence, the knowledge of something else, and the knowledge of non-knowledge—these perceptions, based on words and meanings, are presented to the knower like the horns of a hare.
The notion that 'this is the self, and this is the perception' is an internal delusion. Therefore, it does not arise, and one should abandon words to partake in the essence of existence.
Shri Rama said: I believe this world of waking and dreaming is perceived through memory alone. Memory, created by external objects, is the cause here.
Shri Vasishtha said: That which is perceived as the form of the mind, like the reflection of a crow in a mirror, appears as the essence of all beings, merely as a support.
That which is without cause, the essence of the self, exists in the Supreme Self. It is also in the liberated state, in the all-pervading, formless Self.
This is known as the waking state, dream state, deep sleep, and the fourth state. All these names are given by Brahman itself, which is consciousness and the Self.
This entire universe is like a reflection in consciousness. It shines forth as it appears. The sky in the sky, the form of consciousness in the expanded self.
The manifestation or non-manifestation of that is either luminous or crooked | There is nothing else like the natural pulsation of the great consciousness like the wind
tasmātkiṃ nāma jāgratsyātkāḥ svapnaḥ kā suṣuptatā | kiṃ turyaṃ kā smṛtiḥ kecchā tucchā etāḥ kudṛṣṭayaḥ || 27 ||
Therefore, what is called the waking state, what is the dream state, what is deep sleep | What is the fourth state, what is memory, what is desire, these are all false perceptions
If the external object is of the nature of existence, then memory arises from that | Memory would be the cause of the existence of the world beginning with names
Just as the horns of a hare do not exist, just as a sky-flower does not exist, just as the son of a barren woman does not exist, just as the dark moon does not exist.
Similarly, the object that appears due to ignorance, such as the world, the self, etc., exists as long as it is not examined; when examined, it does not exist at all.
When one mistakenly perceives the earth and other elements as separate from the sky, it is then that one attributes the concept of earth and other elements to that very radiance.
The sky itself is perceived as the earth, thus holding its own awareness. Like a child's imaginary kingdom, it is purely consciousness and indestructible.
What is manifest and what is not manifest of that, it is not to be distinguished. Know that to be of the nature of motion and stillness, like the wind in the sky.
no vācyavācakadṛśā rahito vicāraḥ saṃpadyate sa ca vikalpamayena siddhiśca saṃbhavati tena vinā na kāci ddīpaṃ vinā niśi yathā nayanopalambhaḥ || 45 ||
Without the vision of the expressible and the inexpressible, no thought arises. That thought, arising from imagination, achieves success. Without it, nothing is perceived, just as the eye cannot see in the night without a lamp.
Therefore, having abandoned all mental constructs and the intricate web of thoughts, make the mind steadfast in the supreme essence of all scriptures and rise to the highest state, being devoted to the One.
