muniruvāca evaṃprakārayā yuktyā tenāyaṃ muninā tadā tathāhaṃ bodhito yena gato viditavedyatām || 1 ||
The sage said: By such reasoning, that sage at that time enlightened me, by whom I attained the state of knowing the knowable.
Therefore, he was not abandoned by me due to his persistent pleading. He remained there, even in death, in the same manner.
yenaitanmuninā proktamindūdayaśubhaṃ vacaḥ so'yaṃ paśya muniśreṣṭhas tava pārśve vyavasthitaḥ || 3 ||
See, this best of sages, who spoke these auspicious words at the rise of the moon, is now standing by your side.
anenoktamanuktena mamaetanmohaghātinā dṛśyapūrvāparajñena yajñenevāttamūrtinā || 4 ||
By him, who spoke and did not speak, my delusion was destroyed. He is like a sacrifice, with a form that knows the past and the future.
agniruvāca tadākṛṇya vacastasya munervyādho'bhava tttadā pratyakṣaḥ svapnasargaḥ kimiti khinna iva smayāt || 5 ||
Agni said: Having heard the words of that sage, the hunter became visible, as if in a dream, wondering why he was distressed.
dūradeśagatairdṛṣṭasthirasaudāmanīdhiyā | dravatkanakaniṣyandakuṭṭimaṃ vyoma darśayan || 6 ||
The one who sees the stable and splendid wealth from distant lands, shows the sky dripping with liquid gold.
yatsvapnakathitasyeyaṃ jāgratpratyakṣatocyate | labhyate'pi ca tannāma veda citramidaṃ mune || 7 ||
That which is told in a dream is said to be perceived directly while awake. Even the name is obtained, O sage, know this wonder.
kathameṣa mahānsvapnapuruṣaḥ sa munīśvara | jāgratyapi sthirībhūto bhūto bālamateriva || 8 ||
How is this great dream-person, O lord of sages, stable even while awake, as if he were a child's imagination?
evamāścaryamākhyānamucyatāṃ me yathākramam | kutaḥ kasya kimetadvā paramo hi sa vismayaḥ || 9 ||
Thus, tell me this wondrous tale in order. From where, of whom, what is this, indeed it is the greatest wonder.
muniruvāca | tataḥ śrṇu mahābhāga vṛttaṃ citraṃ kimatram me | kathayāmi samāsena sahasā māṃ kuru tvarām || 10 ||
The sage said: Therefore, listen, O fortunate one, to this strange event that happened to me. I will narrate it briefly, make me swift.
anenaittattadā tatra varṇitaṃ bodhanāya me | budho'hamabhavaṃ cāśu mahato'sya tayā girā || 11 ||
By this, it was described to me for understanding at that time and place | I immediately became wise due to the greatness of that speech
tata etadgirā pūrvaḥ svasvabhāvaḥ smṛto mayā | avadāto'vadātena nabhasēva tapātyayē || 12 ||
Then, this speech was remembered by me as my own nature | Like the sky during the change of heat
aho nu so'hamabhavaṃ munirityuditāśayam | ahamāsaṃ hṛdā sphītātsnāto'vastitavismayāt || 13 ||
Ah, indeed, I became that sage with a proclaimed intention | I was, with a heart full of pride, standing in astonishment
imāṃ bhogāsthayāvasthāṃ prāpto'smyajña ivādhvagaḥ | dhāvañchramārtirambvarthī vyarthayā mṛgatṛṣṇayā || 14 ||
I have attained this state of enjoyment, like an ignorant traveler | Running, tired, seeking water, in vain, like a mirage
kaṣṭaṃ dṛśyopalambhena bhrāntimātrātmanā satā | bālo vetālakeneva prājño'pi cchalito hyaho || 15 ||
It is difficult, being deluded by mere appearances | Even a wise person, like a child, is deceived by the illusion
aho nu citrametena mithyājñānena valgatā | nītaḥ sarvārthaśūnyena padavīṃ kāmimām aham || 16 ||
Oh, how strange it is that I have been led to this desired state by false knowledge, which is devoid of all meaning.
athavā yaḥ so'ham api bhrāntimātraṃ na sanmayaḥ | tathāpi citraśatatā yannāmāsadviḍambyate || 17 ||
Or perhaps I too am merely an illusion, not real. Yet, strangely, this name is being celebrated.
nāham asmi na caiveyam idaṃ nāyam api bhramaḥ | citraṃ sarvam idaṃ mithyā sarvaṃ ca sadiva sthitam || 18 ||
I am not, nor is this, nor is this an illusion. Strangely, all this is false, yet it appears as real.
kim idānīṃ mayā kāryam iha bandhabhidāntaraḥ | vidyate me'ṅkuraśchedyaṃ tattāvat saṃtyajāmy aham || 19 ||
What should I do now in this bondage? There is a sprout to be cut, so I will abandon it now.
āstāmetad avidyaiṣā vyartharūpā kimetayā | bhrāntyā bhrāntir asadrūpā tyaktaivaiṣā mayādhunā || 20 ||
Let this ignorance, which is useless, be gone. What use is this illusion, which is unreal? I will abandon it now.
upadeṣṭā munirayameṣo'tra bhrāntimātrakam| brahmaivāhamivābhāti rūpametaddivābhravat || 21 ||
The sage who is the teacher here appears only as an illusion| This form seems like Brahman itself, like a cloud in the sky
tadevaṃ tāvaduditajñānaṃ vakṣye mahāmunim| iti saṃcintya sa munistatra prokta idaṃ mayā || 22 ||
Thus, I will now speak the knowledge that has arisen to the great sage| Having thought thus, the sage spoke this to me there
munināyaka gacchāmi taccharīramidaṃ nijam| draṣṭuṃ yacca pravṛtto'smi śarīraṃ tadapīkṣitum || 23 ||
O leader of sages, I will go to see this body of mine| And I am eager to see that body as well
ityākarṇya sa māmāha hasanmunivarastadā| kutastau bhavato dehau tau sudūrataraṃ gatau || 24 ||
Having heard this, the great sage laughed and said to me| Where are your two bodies? They have gone very far away
gacchātmanaiva vā paśya vṛttāntaṃ vṛttakovida| paśya tāvadyathāvṛttaṃ dṛṣṭāntaṃ jñāsyasi svayam || 25 ||
Go by yourself and see the events, O knower of events| See how it happened, you will understand the example yourself
iti saṃcintya taṃ dehaṃ vidaṃ bhūsattayā''smikamtyaktvā cidātmā tatprāṇātpavane yojito mayā || 26 ||
Thus, having contemplated, I abandoned that body which was like a burden of earthly existence, and my conscious self was united with the wind of life breath by me.
prāktanaṃ dehamālokya yāvadāyāmyahaṃ muneihaiva tāvatsthātavyamityuktvāhaṃ gato'nilam || 27 ||
Having seen the previous body, I said to the sage, 'I will come back soon, so you should stay here until then.' Having said this, I went to the wind.
atha vātarathārūḍho gaganaṃ bhrāntavānahampuṣpāmoda ivānantaṃ gatvā ca tvarayā ciram || 28 ||
Then, mounted on the chariot of wind, I wandered in the sky like the fragrance of flowers, going endlessly with speed for a long time.
tataściramapi bhrāntvā yadā galavilaṃ calanahaṃ na prāptavāṃstasya kiṃcidasyāśayasthitaḥ || 29 ||
Then, even after wandering for a long time, when I moved swiftly, I did not attain anything of that desire which was in my heart.
tadā khedamupāyātaḥ paramaṃ punarāgataḥidameva jagajjālamahamālānamātmanaḥ || 30 ||
Then, overwhelmed by sorrow, I returned to the supreme state. This entire world is indeed a mere illusion of the self.
ihemaṃ labdhvānagre tato munimanuttamam | pṛṣṭavānahamekāgrastata evamidaṃ gṛhe || 31 ||
Having obtained this, I first approached the best of sages and asked him with single-minded focus, and thus he spoke to me in this house.
kimetadbhagavanbrūhi pūrvāparavidāṃvara | tvaṃ paśyasi yathāvṛttamuttamajñānacakṣuṣā || 32 ||
O Lord, please tell me what this is. You are the best among those who know the past and the future. You see everything accurately with the eye of supreme knowledge.
yasya dehaṃ praviṣṭo'haṃ sa ca madvapureva ca | kva tāvubhau gatau dehau na labdhau kena hetunā || 33 ||
Into whose body I have entered, and that body is also mine. Where have both bodies gone? Why have they not been found?
mayāticiramābhogi bhrāntaṃ saṃsāramanḍalam | sthāvarādā''tmanaḥ kasmātprāptaṃ galabilaṃ na tat || 34 ||
I have wandered for a very long time in the deluded cycle of worldly existence. Why have I not attained the state of liberation from the bondage of the material world?
gatveti pṛṣṭaḥ sa muniḥ samuvāca mahāśayaḥ | jānāsi tatsvayaṃ kasmāditi tāmarasekṣaṇa || 35 ||
Having been asked, 'Where have they gone?' that great sage replied, 'You know that yourself. Why do you ask, O lotus-eyed one?'
etadālokayasi cet svayaṃ yogai kasamvidā | tatpaśyasyeva niḥśeṣaṃ yathā karatalāmbujam || 36 ||
If you perceive this directly through the singular awareness of yoga, then you will see everything completely, just like a lotus in the palm of your hand.
tathāpi yadi śuśrūṣā tavāsti vacasā mama | tadidaṃ śṛṇu vakṣyāmi yathāvṛttamakhṇḍitam || 37 ||
Nevertheless, if you have the desire to listen to my words, then hear this from me, I will tell you the unbroken sequence of events as they occurred.
tapastāmarasoṣṇāṃśuḥ kalyāṇakamalākaraḥ | jñānābjasya harernābhirnāsti tāvadayaṃ bhavān || 38 ||
The sun, which is the lotus of auspiciousness, the navel of the lotus of knowledge, does not exist until then, O Lord.
sa tvaṃ kadācit tapasi sthitaḥ svapnadidṛkṣayā | kasyacid dhṛdayaṃ jantoḥ praviṣṭaḥ puṣṭasamvidā || 39 ||
Once, while engaged in austerities with the desire to see a dream, you entered the heart of some being with a nourished consciousness.
yattvaṃ praviṣṭo hṛdayaṃ tatredaṃ bhuvanatrayam | dṛṣṭavānasi vistīrṇaṃ rodasī vipulodaram || 40 ||
When you entered the heart, you saw the three worlds spread out there, vast and expansive.
iti tvayi ciraṃ vyagre dehastasya tathāpi ca | sa saṃsuptākṛtiryatra sthitastatra mahāvane || 41 ||
Thus, while you were long engaged, his body remained in that state | He appeared as if asleep where he stood in the great forest
lagnō'gnirdhūmadhūmrābhrasāmbarāmbaraḍambaraḥ | valadvacalālātacakrasūryendumaṇḍalaḥ || 42 ||
The fire was kindled, with smoke as dark as clouds, and the sky was covered with a canopy of smoke | The flames were like the rotating discs of the sun and moon
dagdhābhra bhasmasaṃpūrṇadhūmābhrāsitakambalaiḥ | ānīlākāśadalapairiva saṃchāditāmbaraḥ || 43 ||
The sky was covered with ashes from the burnt clouds and smoke, resembling dark blue petals | It was as if the sky was shrouded in a dark blue canopy
darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntasiṃhanirhrādatarjitaiḥ | sphuṭaiścaṭacaṭāsphoṭairjaḍīkṛtadigantaraḥ || 44 ||
The directions were frozen with the loud roars of lions emerging from their cave-like homes, and the sharp crackling sounds
tālītamālamālānāṃ gatānāmagṇivṛkṣatām | pātairutpātavahnyabhrakavatkarakarairghanḥ || 45 ||
The dense forest was filled with the falling of tall trees that had turned into firewood, resembling the fall of meteors and thunderclouds
kaṇaistārāgaṇaṃ kāntairvyomni dviguṇatāṃ nayan | vakṣaḥsthabālavanitānayanānandanandanaḥ || 47 ||
The stars in the sky, which are beautiful, double in number, and the one who delights the eyes of the young maiden on his chest.
jvālādhama-dhama-āśabdapradhmātagaganodaraḥ | darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntabhrāntonnidravanecharaḥ || 48 ||
The sky resounds with the roaring sound of flames, and the forest dwellers, startled from their sleep, emerge from their cave dwellings.
ardhadagdhadravatsiṃhamṛgavyādhavihangamaḥ | kvathatsaraḥsaritsroto-randhitogravanecharaḥ || 49 ||
Half-burnt and fleeing lions, deer, hunters, and birds, and the boiling lake, river, and stream, and the blinded fierce forest dwellers.
valajjvālājvaladbālacamarīcārucañcuraḥ | dahyamānavanaprāṇimedogandhāvṛtāmbudaḥ || 50 ||
The clouds are covered with the smell of burning fat from the forest animals being burnt by the blazing flames, which have beautiful flickering tongues.
tena kalpāgnikalpena valgatā vanavahninā | sayuṣmadāśramo dagdhaḥ sarpeṇeva prasarpata || 51 ||
By that forest fire, which spreads like the fire of destruction, the hermitage with its inhabitants is burnt, as if by a creeping serpent.
vyādha uvācatatra tasyāgnidāhasya hetuḥ kaḥ prākṛto munetadvanaṃ te baṭuvarāḥ sarvaṃ naṣṭaṃ kathaṃ saha || 52 ||
The hunter said, 'What is the natural cause of this fire that burnt down the forest? O sage, how could all your young disciples perish together?'
muniruvācasaṃkalpakamanaspandaḥ saṃkalpādikṣayodayeyathā heturnirāspando'cirāddhi trijagattathā || 53 ||
The sage said, 'The mind's fluctuations due to desires lead to the rise and fall of everything. Just as the cause of these fluctuations is removed, the three worlds become steady in no time.'
hṛdaye ca vanānte ca kṣobhākṣobheṣu kāraṇamyathā spando'cirātspandastathā trijagatāmiha || 54 ||
In the heart and at the edge of the forest, in both agitation and calm, the cause of fluctuations is the same. Just as the fluctuations cease quickly, so do the three worlds here.
dhātuḥ saṃkalpanagaraṃ jagattatspandanaṃ tvihaprajodayakṣayakṣobhavarṣāvarṣādikāraṇam || 55 ||
The elements, the city of thoughts, the world, and its fluctuations are the causes of the rise, fall, agitation, and calm here.
brahmādimānaso'pyasya so'pyanyatra cidambareityaparyavasāneyaṃ śāntaikā cinnabhogatiḥ || 56 ||
Even the minds of Brahma and others are ultimately absorbed in the pure consciousness, which is the ultimate reality. This is the only peaceful and blissful state.
citinabhasi cinnabhaḥśrīḥ kacatīti nirāmayā viduṣām | mūrkhāṇāṃ tu yathaiṣā yādṛgvā tanmayīha na sat || 57 ||
In the realm of consciousness, the splendor of consciousness shines, known to the wise as free from disease | But for fools, it is as it is, whatever it may be, it is not real
