17.127.1

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavankathayaitanme kathaṃ bhūgolakaṃ sthitam | kathamṛkṣagaṇo yāti lokālokaḥ kathaṃ giriḥ || 1 ||

Shri Ram said: O Lord, please explain to me how the Earth is situated, how the constellations move, and how the Lokāloka mountain is.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathā saṃkalparacitā śiśorvyomani tiṣṭhati | vīṭā cinmātrabālena kalpito bhūstathāmbare || 2 ||

Vasishtha said: Just as a child's imagined city exists in the sky, so too does the Earth, imagined by the pure consciousness of a child, exist in the sky.

yathā timirikākṣāṇāṃ keśacandrādidarśanam | cidākāśasya sargādau tathā pṛthvyādidarśanam || 3 ||

Just as those with cataracts see hairs and the moon, so too at the beginning of creation, the vision of the Earth and other things appears in the space of consciousness.

yathā saṃkalpanagaraṃ dhāryamāṇaṃ na dṛśyate | dhāryate dhāryate mā ca tathorvyānubhavaściteḥ || 4 ||

Just as an imagined city, though held in mind, is not seen, so too the experience of the Earth is not seen in consciousness.

yadyathā yāvadābhāti citi cittvātsvabhāvataḥ | tattathā tāvadābhāti tatra tatra tadātmakam || 5 ||

Whatever appears in consciousness, in whatever way, and for however long, it appears in that way, in that place, and with that nature.

timirākrāntanetrasya keśoṇḍrakamivāmbare | cinmātrasya mahīgolo yo bhātaḥ sa tathā sthitaḥ || 6 ||

Just as a person with eyes covered in darkness sees a hair-ball in the sky, similarly, the world appears to the pure consciousness.

ūrdhvaṃ vahantyaḥ saritastadadhastādhutāśanaḥ | citi cet svapnavadbhāti tattathā tatsthitaṃ bhavet || 7 ||

If the rivers flow upwards and fire burns downwards, it would appear as a dream. Thus, it would be situated in that manner.

tasmātpatantī bhūrbhātā patatyevāniśaṃ jagat | utpatantī tu cidbhātā tathā nānātmikā bhavet || 8 ||

Therefore, the earth appears to be falling continuously. The world also falls in the same way. However, the consciousness appears to rise, thus becoming manifold.

stabdhabhātā sthitā stabdhā sālokā tu prakāśinī | nirālokā nirālokalokānāmātmani sthitā || 9 ||

The immovable appears to be stationary, illuminating the world. The non-illuminating is situated in the self of the non-illuminating worlds.

cidbhānaikānusāreṇa tārācakraṃ tathā mahī | asadeva sadaivedaṃ bhātīdamavikhaṇḍitam || 10 ||

According to the single principle of consciousness, the star system and the earth appear as they are, unbroken and eternal.

ālokālokamevātha nabhaḥkhātaṃ tato mahat | tama ekārṇavākāraṃ sthitaṃ tatra kvacitkvacit || 11 ||

There, the vast expanse of the sky is dug out, and there exists darkness in the form of a single ocean, situated in some places.

127.127.12

dūratvādṛkṣacakrasya karālatvānmahāgireḥ | kvacittamaḥ kvacittejastatraivācatvare’pi ca || 12 ||

Due to the distance of the constellation and the terrifying nature of the great mountain, there is darkness in some places and light in others, even in the same region.

lokālokagireḥ pāre sthitādākāśamaṇḍalāt | daśadikkaṃ sudūreṇa ṛkṣacakraṃ vivartate || 13 ||

Beyond the boundary of the Lokāloka mountain, far from the sky, the constellation rotates in all ten directions.

āpātāladivo naddhamṛkṣacakraṃ tadambare | daśadikkaṃ prasarati patadūrdhvādṛte'bhitaḥ || 14 ||

The constellation, bound from the underworld to the heavens, spreads in all ten directions, falling from above and below.

bhūlokameva pātālayutaṃ nakṣatramanḍalam | paryeti lokālokānte nānyaccitkalpanācca tat || 15 ||

The constellation, along with the underworld, revolves around the earth, and nothing else is imagined beyond the boundary of Lokāloka.

salokālokabhūlokadviguṇātkhādanantaram | pakvākṣoṭasya bhisseva sthitaṃ nakṣatramanḍalam || 16 ||

After consuming twice the amount of the three worlds (heaven, earth, and the underworld), the constellation remains like a ripe grain of corn.

dviguṇā nabhasastasmādṛkṣacakrasya puṣṭatā | daśadikkaṃ visarato bilvatvaksadṛśasthiteḥ || 17 ||

Twice the sky from that constellation's nourishment, spreading in ten directions, resembles the peel of a bael fruit.

saṃviddhanasya kacanaṃ yādṛśaṃ kalpanātmakam | yaditthaṃ saṃniveśena nanviyaṃ jāgatī sthitiḥ || 18 ||

The imagined form of the conscious being, if it is established thus, is this not the state of the world?

nakṣatracakrāddviguṇaṃ tato'nyadvidyate nabhaḥ | tacca kvacitprakāśāḍhyaṃ kvacitsāndratamomayam || 19 ||

Beyond the constellation, there is another sky that is twice as large, which is sometimes bright and sometimes dense with darkness.

paryante tasya nabhasaḥ sthitaṃ brahmāṇḍakharparam | ekamūrdhve paramadho gaganaṃ madhyametayoḥ || 20 ||

At the edge of that sky, the cosmic egg is situated, with one part above, another below, and the sky in the middle of these two.

yojanānāṃ koṭiśataṃ puṣṭaṃ vajradṛḍhaṃ ca tat | sthitaṃ saṃvedanamayaṃ vyomni vyomamayātmakam || 21 ||

The countless plans, strong and firm like a diamond, are established in the sky, filled with consciousness and of the nature of the sky.

sarvadikkaṃ mahāgole nabhasi svarkatārakam | kimatro'rdhvamadhaḥ kiṃ syātsarvamūrdhvamadhaśca vā || 22 ||

In the great sphere of the sky, which is filled with stars, what is above and what is below? Everything is both above and below.

patanamutpataṇaṃ gamanaṃ sthitaṃ citi iti sphuriṇaṃ na tu vastu tat | patanamasti na cotpataṇaṃ na vā gamanaṃ āgamanaṃ sthitamityapi || 23 ||

Falling, rising, moving, staying, and consciousness are all just appearances, not real entities. There is no falling, no rising, no moving, no staying, and no consciousness.
