17.12.1

bhushuṇḍa uvāca | kha eva vyoma saṃpannamiti saṃkalpanaṃ yathā | bhrāntimātramasadrūpaṃ tathāhaṃbhāvabhāvanam || 1 ||

Bhushunda said: Just as the concept that the sky is filled with space is merely an illusion, so too is the notion of the ego.

khe khaṃ jātamiti bhrānterahaṃ kalpayitā yathā | tathā nirvyapadeśyātma sadastyasadivātatam || 2 ||

Just as the illusion that space is born in the sky creates the notion of 'I', so too the unmanifested self appears as both real and unreal.

khe khātmaivāsti cidrūpaṃ tatsvakaṃ budhyate vapuḥ | bhāsate yadidantvena nāhamasmi na cānaham || 3 ||

In the sky, only the self in the form of consciousness exists, which is perceived as one's own body. It shines as 'I' and 'not I', neither 'I am' nor 'I am not'.

tataścidrūpamastīdṛgyatra sthūlaṃ khamapyalam | aṇāviva mahāmerustatsaṃvittirhi khāditā || 4 ||

Therefore, the self in the form of consciousness exists in this way, where even the gross sky is subtle. Like an atom, the great Meru is perceived in that consciousness.

ghanastato'cidadābhāsaḥ khādapyatitarāmaṇuḥ | jānāti yatsvabhāvaṃ tadetatsargatayā sthitam || 5 ||

Therefore, the dense reflection of non-consciousness, even more subtle than the sky, knows its own nature. This is established in the form of creation.

ahantākhāditādyātmavidaḥ prasaraṇaṃ jagat| ambhodravaprasaraṇaṃ yathāvartādivēṣṭanam || 6 ||

The expansion of the universe is like the expansion of water from a cloud, just as the enveloping of waves, etc.

acitprasaraṇaṃ śāntamaspandīva jaladravaḥ| niḥspandapavanākāramākāśahṛdayopamam || 7 ||

The expansion of the insentient is calm, like the flow of water without waves, resembling the wind without motion, like the heart of the sky.

87.12.8

na deśakālādijagatprasareṣu ca yujyate| ghanācchūnyānnirābhāsāccinmātravisarādṛte || 8 ||

It does not fit in the expansions of the universe in terms of space, time, etc., except from the pure consciousness expansion.

cinmātre prasṛte kāle vyomni nāvi jale sthale| nidrāyāṃ jāgrati svapne bhavejjagadivoditam || 9 ||

When pure consciousness expands in time, it appears as if the universe is manifested in the sky, water, land, dream, and wakefulness.

prasaraṇāprasaraṇe na ca saṃbhavato vidaḥ| khādapyatyantasvacchatvādakṣobhādeḥ sadaiva hi || 10 ||

In the expansion and non-expansion, the knower does not exist due to the absolute purity and immutability.

jñashcetati na bhogādi na caivātmanyasāvaham | dravatvamambhasīvāntaradvitīyaḥ pare sthitaḥ || 11 ||

The knower of the self does not perceive enjoyment or the ego as 'I am this.' Like water, it is fluid and without a second, situated in the supreme.

dhīrhṛḥ śrīrbhīḥ smṛtiḥ kīrtiḥ kāntirityādikaṃgaṇaṃ | na paśyati visaṃkalpastamasīva padānyaheḥ || 12 ||

The one without desires does not perceive qualities such as intelligence, modesty, prosperity, memory, fame, and radiance, like darkness covering the steps of the serpent.

137.12.13

brahmendubimbasphuritacijjyotsnāṃśāmṛtadravaḥ | dikkālāsaṃbhavātsargo neśvarādatiricyate || 13 ||

The nectar-like flow of the reflected light of Brahman and the moon does not transcend the creation arising from direction and time from the Lord.

ādhimānyaḥ sphuratyevaṃ pare sphurati bhāsuram | jagadādyātmakaṃ cittaṃ cakraughatvamivāmbhasi || 14 ||

The supreme consciousness shines forth in this way, shining brightly in the supreme. The mind, which is the essence of the universe, appears like a whirlpool in water.

majjanonmajjanaārāvairvivartāvartaveṣṭanaiḥ | acchinnānupadaṃ kṣīṇā bhāti sargasaricciram || 15 ||

With the sounds of immersion and emergence, with the movements of transformation and rotation, the unbroken, continuous flow of creation appears to be diminishing.

yathāvartaiḥ payo bhāti dhūmo bhāti yathā ghanaḥ | tathā jaḍātmakatayā tṛtīyaḥ sarga etayoḥ || 16 ||

Just as milk appears white and smoke appears dense, similarly, the third creation appears inert due to its nature.

dāruṇi krakacacchede yathāvartādikaṃ tathā | adigādau pare sargastadatadrūpavānayam || 17 ||

Just as a saw cuts through wood, similarly, the ultimate creation is both manifest and unmanifest.

saṃsārakadalīstambhādvinā saṃkalpapallavam | mṛduno’pi dṛṣatkrūrānna kiṃcillabhate’ntaram || 18 ||

Without the support of the worldly tree, even the tender sprout of intention cannot find any space, being seen as cruel.

197.12.19

sahasrakhuramūrdhākṣikaravaktrahitohitam | nānādritanudigdeśasaritprādeśamātrakam || 19 ||

With thousands of hooves, heads, eyes, hands, and mouths, it is beneficial and harmful, encompassing various mountains, bodies, directions, and rivers, spanning a measure of a fathom.

207.12.20

antaḥśūnyamasārātma bahurāgoparañjitam | sphuradvirāgavihitamārjanāmātratarjanam || 20 ||

Empty within, devoid of essence, adorned with many passions, shining with detachment, merely cleansing and threatening.

217.12.21

sasurāsuragandharvavidyādharamahoragam | jaḍātmavanaspanadi paracetanacetitam || 21 ||

The world is filled with various beings, both animate and inanimate, from gods to demons, from celestial beings to serpents, and from the inert to the conscious.

paṭe citramahārājyamiva bhāsurasundaram | parāmarśāsahaṃ cāru vikalpasphūrjitaṃ jagat || 22 ||

The world is like a beautiful painting, shining and splendid, filled with the delightful play of various thoughts and perceptions.

spandātmni vikalpāṃśe patitā'satyarūpiṇi | saṃvitprasarati bhrāntau tailabindurivāmbhasi || 23 ||

In the vibrant realm of diverse thoughts, which are essentially unreal, consciousness spreads like an oil drop in water, creating illusions.

247.12.24

hṛllekhājālavisaraiḥ sarvāvartavivartanaiḥ | visaratsnehasaṃmiśrajadānudayacarvaṇaiḥ || 24 ||

The world is pervaded by the intricate web of heart-lines, which cause all transformations and movements, intertwined with the rise of inert matter and the enjoyment of affection.

ahamityādicidrūpe vikalpenonmukhī satī | na parādvyatiriktaiṣā jalatvādiva toytā || 25 ||

When the consciousness, which is the essence of 'I', is awakened by the play of thoughts, it is not separate from the supreme consciousness, just as water is not separate from its liquid nature.

cidādityaḥ sva ātmaiva sarga ityabhidhīyate | bhūtvāhamiti tenānyo na sargo'sti na sarjakaḥ || 26 ||

The self, which is the pure consciousness, is said to be the creation. There is no other creation or creator apart from the self.

spandātmikāyāṃ sattāyāṃ yathā spando jaladravāḥ | tathā cidātmā vyomatvenavyomatvādi vetti hi || 27 ||

Just as the movement of water is inherent in its nature, so too the self, which is pure consciousness, perceives the space-like nature of all things.

deśakālādinirmāṇapūrvakaṃ vedaṃ vedaḥ | sargātmakatvāttena ambudravasāmyaṃ na dūragam || 28 ||

The wise perceive the creation of space, time, and other elements. Due to its creative nature, it is not distant from the flow of water.

manohaṃbhāvabuddhyādi yatkiñcinnaṃ vedaṃ | avidyāṃ viddhi yatnena pauruṣeṇāśu naśyati || 29 ||

Whatever is known through the mind, ego, and intellect is ignorance. Know it with effort, and it will quickly vanish through human effort.

ardhaṃ mithaḥsaṃkathayā bhāgaḥ śāstravicāraṇaiḥ | ātmapratyayataḥ śiṣṭamavidyāyā nivartate || 30 ||

Half of ignorance is dispelled through mutual discussion and the study of scriptures. The remaining ignorance is dispelled through self-realization.

caturbhāgātmani kṛte ityavidyākṣaye kramāt | samakālācca yacchiṣṭaṃ tadanāmārthasanmayam || 31 ||

When the self is divided into four parts and ignorance is gradually destroyed, what remains is the true essence of the nameless.

śrīrāma uvāca | ardhaṃ mithaḥsaṃkathayā bhāgaḥ śāstravicāraṇaiḥ | ātmapratyayato bhāgaḥ kathaṃ tasyā nivartate || 32 ||

Sri Rama said: How does the part of self-realization through scriptural inquiry and mutual discussion, and the part of self-conviction, turn away from her?

samakāle kramācceti muninātha kimucyate | tadanāmārthasacceti saccāsacceti kiṃ vada || 33 ||

O Lord of sages, what is meant by 'simultaneously and gradually'? What is meant by 'that is the true essence of the nameless' and 'true and false'?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sujanena viraktena saṃsārottaraṇārthinā | saha cāpyātmaviduṣāṃ saṃsṛtiṃ pravicārayet || 34 ||

Sri Vasistha said: One should discuss the cycle of existence with noble, detached persons who are seekers of liberation and knowers of the self.

yataḥ kutaścidanviṣya savirāgamamatsaram | janaṃ sajjanamātmajñaṃ yatnenārādhayedbudaḥ || 35 ||

Therefore, a wise person should diligently seek out and worship a noble, self-knowing person who is free from desire and envy.

saṃpannesamgame sādhoravidyārdhaṃ kṣayaṃ gatam vidhi vedyavidāṃ śreṣṭha jyeṣṭhaśreṣṭhadaśodayāt || 36 ||

When the association with the virtuous is complete, half of the ignorance is destroyed. Know this, O best of the knowers of the knowable, from the rise of the best of the best qualities.

ardhaṃ sajjana-samparkādavidyāyā vinaśyati caturbhāgastu śāstrārthaiścaturbhāgaṃ svayatnataḥ || 37 ||

Half of the ignorance is destroyed by association with the virtuous, one-fourth by understanding the scriptures, and one-fourth by personal effort.

eko'bhilāṣa utpanno bhogebhyaśca nivāryate tatkṣaye yātyavidyāyāścaturthāṃśaḥ svayatnataḥ || 38 ||

One desire arises and is restrained from enjoyments. In its destruction, one-fourth of ignorance is destroyed by personal effort.

sādhusaṅgamaśāstrārthasvayatnaiḥ kṣīyate malam ekaikeṇātha sarvaiśca tulyakālaṃ kramādapi || 39 ||

Impurity is destroyed by association with the virtuous, understanding the scriptures, and personal effort. It is destroyed gradually by each one of these or all of them together in the same period of time.

yadavidyākṣayaikekātma na kiṃcitkiṃcideva ca śiṣyate tatparaṃ prāhuranāmārthamasacca sat || 40 ||

That which remains after the destruction of ignorance is neither this nor that. It is called the supreme, the nameless, the unreal, and the real.

brahmedaṃ ghanamajarādyanantamekaṃ saṃkalpasphuraṇamavidyamānameva | buddhvaivaṃ vyapagatamānameyamoho nirvāṇaṃ pariviharanviśokamāssva || 41 ||

This entire universe, which is dense, eternal, and infinite, is a manifestation of Brahman's will, though it appears non-existent. Knowing this, one's delusion disappears, and one attains the state of Nirvana, free from sorrow.
