16.41.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | śivaḥ kimucyate deva paraṃbrahma kimucyate | ātmā kimucyate nātha paramātmā kimucyate || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: God, what is called Shiva? What is called the highest Brahman? Lord, what is called the self? What is called the supreme self?

tatsatkiṃcinnakiṃcicca śūnyaṃ vijñānameva ca | ityādibhedo bhagavaṃstrilokeśa kimucyate || 2 ||

Some call it that, some call it being, some call it something, some call it nothing, some call it emptiness, some call it pure awareness. Lord, ruler of the three worlds, what is meant by all these different names?

īśvara uvāca | anādyantamanābhāsaṃ satkiṃcid iha vidyate | indriyāṇāmagamyatvādyan na kiṃcid iva sthitam || 3 ||

Ishvara said: A real something exists here that has no beginning and no end and never becomes visible. Because the senses cannot reach it, it stands as if it were nothing at all.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadindriyāṇāṃ buddhyādiyuktānāmapyadṛśyatām | gataṃ tatkathamīśāna tvāśaṅkenopagamyate || 4 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: That thing is unseen even by the senses joined with the mind and the intellect. Lord, how then can anyone grasp it with no doubt at all?

īśvara uvāca | yo mumukṣuravidyāṃśaḥ kevalo nāma sāttvikaḥ | sāttvikaireva so'vidyābhāgaiḥ śāstrādināmabhiḥ || 5 ||

Ishvara said: The seeker of liberation is himself only a portion of ignorance, the pure kind, called the sattvic portion. It is by these very sattvic portions of ignorance, which go by names such as scripture,

avidyāṃ śreṣṭhayā śreṣṭhāṃ kṣālayanniha tiṣṭhati | malaṃ malenāpaharanyuktijño rajako yathā || 6 ||

that he washes away the coarser ignorance with this finer ignorance, and so remains here, like a skilled washerman who removes one stain with another stain.

kākatālīyavatpaścādavidyākṣaya āgate | prapaśyatyātmanaivātmā svabhāvasyeva niścayaḥ || 7 ||

Later, when ignorance is finally destroyed, the way a crow happens to land on a branch at the very moment a palm fruit happens to fall, the self sees itself by itself alone. This indeed is the certain knowledge of its own true nature.

yathākathaṃcid aṅgāre nighṛṣya kṣālayaṃś śiśuḥ | karanair malyam āpnoti kārṣṇyāṅgārakṣaye yathā || 8 ||

It is like a child who somehow rubs charcoal on his hands and washes them, and gets clean hands only once all the black of the charcoal is gone.

yathākathaṃciśśāstrādyairbhāgairbhāgaṃ vicārayet | sāttvikastāmaso bhāgo dvayorātmodayastathā || 9 ||

In the same way, one should use the pure portion, such as scripture, however one can, to examine the dark portion. Between these two portions, the pure and the dark, the self then rises.

paśyatyātmānamātmaiva vicārayati cātmanā | ātmaivahehāsti nāvidyā ityavidyākṣayaṃ viduḥ || 10 ||

The self alone sees the self, and by the self it examines itself. Here only the self exists, not ignorance. This is what the wise call the destruction of ignorance.

yāvatkiṃcididaṃ vastu nānā nātmāvagamyatām | kramā gurūpadeśādyā nātmajñānasya kāraṇam || 11 ||

So long as this thing is taken as many separate things, the self is not understood. The sequence that begins with the guru's teaching is not itself the cause of self-knowledge.

gururhīndriyavṛttātmā brahma sarvendriyakṣayāt | yadvastu yatkṣaye prāpyaṃ tattasminnāpyate || 12 ||

The guru is himself a being made of the working of the senses, but Brahman is reached only through the ending of all the senses. Whatever is to be gained by the ending of some thing cannot be gained while that thing still exists.

akāraṇānyapi prāptā bhṛśaṃ kāraṇatāṃ dvija | kramā gurūpadeśādyā ātmajñānasya siddhaye || 13 ||

Brahmin, though the guru's teaching and the rest are not themselves the cause, in their gradual course they come strongly to serve as a cause for reaching self-knowledge.

krame gurūpadeśānāṃ pravṛtte śiṣyabodhataḥ | anirdeśyo'pyadṛśyo'pi svayamātmā prasīdati || 14 ||

When the guru's teaching has done its work through the disciple's own understanding, the self, though it cannot be pointed to and cannot be seen, reveals itself on its own.

śāstrārthairbuddhyate nātmā gurorvacanato na ca | buddhyate svayamevaiṣa svabodhavśatastataḥ || 15 ||

The self is not known through the meaning of scripture, nor through the guru's words. It is known only by itself, through the force of its own awakening.

gurūpadeśaśāstrārthairvinā cātmā na budhyate | etatsaṃyogasattaiva svātmajñānaprakāśinī || 16 ||

Yet without the guru's teaching and the meaning of the scriptures, the self is also not known. It is the presence of this combination together that brings the light of self-knowledge.

guruśāstrārthaśiṣyāṇāṃ cirasaṃyogasattayā | ahanīva janācāra ātmajñānaṃ pravartate || 17 ||

Through the long-continued presence of the guru, the meaning of scripture, and the disciple together, self-knowledge comes about, just as people's habits are formed day after day.

karmabuddhīndriyādyantasukhaduḥkhādisaṃkṣaye | śiva ātmeti kathitastatsadityādināmabhiḥ || 18 ||

When action, intellect, the senses and the rest, along with pleasure, pain and the rest, finally come to an end, that is what is spoken of by the names Shiva, the self, that, being, and the like.

yatredamakhilaṃ nāsti tadrūpeṇaiva cāsti vā | tadākāśādacchataramanantaṃ sadivāsti hi || 19 ||

Where this whole world does not exist, or exists only as one with that reality, that reality is clearer than open space, without end, and truly exists as pure being.

aviśrāntatayā yatra tanuvidyairmumukṣubhiḥ | vicitraśuddhamananakalaṅkakalitātmabhiḥ || 20 ||

There, seekers of liberation who have only slight knowledge work without ever resting, their very being marked with the imprint of varied, pure reflection.

adūra eva tiṣṭhadbhirjīvanmuktasya dṛkpathe | mokṣopāsakabodhāya śāstrārthracanāya ca || 21 ||

They stay always close, within the sight of one liberated while still alive, so as to awaken those devoted to liberation and to compose the meaning of the scriptures.

226.41.22

brahmendrarudrapramukhairlokapālaiḥ supaṇḍitaiḥ | purāṇavedasiddhāntasiddhaye bhāvitātmabhiḥ || 22 ||

The guardians of the world, led by Brahma, Indra, and Rudra, are deeply learned, their minds devoted to establishing the doctrines of the Puranas and the Vedas.

cidbrahma śiva ātmeśaparamātmeśvarādikā | etasminkalpitā saṃjñā niḥsaṃjñe pṛthagīśvare || 23 ||

Upon this alone are the names Chit-Brahman, Shiva, lord of the self, supreme self, Ishvara, and the rest placed, names given to a single Lord who in truth has no name and stands apart from all of them.

evametajjagattattvaṃ svaṃ tattvaṃ śivanāmakam | sarvathā sarvadā sarvasarvaṃ yatsukhamāsva bho || 24 ||

So this true nature of the world is also your own true nature, and it goes by the name Shiva, in every way, at all times, the whole of everything. Rest happily in it, friend.

śiva ātmā paraṃ brahmetyādiśabdaitu bhinnatā | purātanairviracitā tasya bhedo na vastutaḥ || 25 ||

Words like Shiva, the self, the highest Brahman, and so on seem to show a difference between them, but that difference was made by people of old. In truth there is no division in it at all.

evaṃ devārcanaṃ nityaṃ jñaḥ kurvanmunināyaka | yatrāsmadādayo bhṛtyāstatprayānti paraṃ padam || 26 ||

So, chief among sages, one who knows this and always worships God in this way reaches the very same highest state that we too, mere servants, also reach.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | avidyamānamevedaṃ vidyamānamiva sthitam | yathā tanme samāsena bhagavanvaktumarhasi || 27 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: This world does not really exist at all, yet it stands here as if it did exist. Lord, please explain this to me briefly, exactly as it is.

īśvara uvāca | yo'sau brahmādiśabdārthaḥ saṃvidaṃ viddhi kevalam | svacchamākāśamapyasyasthūlaṃ meruraṇoriva || 28 ||

Ishvara said: Know that whatever is meant by the word Brahman and other such words is nothing but pure awareness itself. Next to it, even clear open space is as coarse as Mount Meru is next to a speck of dust.

sā vedyamiha gacchantī yāti cinnāmayogyatām | apyavedyavatī nūnamunmanyantapadasthitā || 29 ||

That awareness, when it turns into something known here, only earns the fitness to be called thought. But truly, since it has nothing at all left to know, it stands firm in the state that lies beyond the mind.

306.41.30

kṣaṇādbhāvitavedyattvādahantāmanugacchati | puruṣatvātpumān svapne vanavāraṇatāmiva || 30 ||

Because in an instant it comes to be treated as something known, it takes on the sense of I. It is like a man, who is truly a man, becoming a wild elephant in his dream.

asyāhantādirūpāyā deśatāṃ kālatāṃ gatāḥ | saṃpadyante tataḥ śūnyarūpiṇyaḥ sakhya eva tāḥ || 31 ||

These powers, true companions of this being whose nature is 'I', turn into place and into time, and so, in the end, they turn out to be void, having no real form.

tābhiḥ saṃvalitā saiva sattā jīvābhidhānikā | bhavati spandavijñānā pavanasyaiva lekhikā || 32 ||

That same being, mixed together with those powers, becomes what we call the living self. It is aware of movement, and it is the very writer of the breath.

jīvaśaktistathābhūtā niścayaikavilāsinī | buddhitāmanuyātā sā bhavatyajñapade sthitā || 33 ||

This power of the living being comes about in this way; its one joy is making up its mind. Once it turns into intellect, it comes to rest in the state of not knowing.

śabdaśaktyā kriyāśaktyā jñānaśaktyānugamyate | pratyekaṃ prasphuratyantarapradarśitarūpayā || 34 ||

It is followed by three powers, the power to speak, the power to act, and the power to know, and each one shines out with a form shown from within.

militvaiṣa gaṇaḥ kṣipraṃ smṛtiṃ samanukūlayan | mano bhavati bhūtātmabījaṃ saṃkalpaśākhinaḥ || 35 ||

These powers join together, quickly bring memory into line, and become the mind, the seed-self of all beings, the seed of the tree whose branches are our thoughts.

ātivāhikadehoktibhājanaṃ tadvidurbudhāḥ | antasthayā brahmaśaktyā jñarūpaṃ svātmanātmadṛk || 36 ||

The wise call this the carrier body, the subtle body that travels on. Through the hidden power of the Supreme within it, it takes the shape of a knower, seeing itself by itself.

sampadyamānā evāsmiṃścetasīmā hi śaktayaḥ | paścādiha bahiṣṭhāstā udyantyanuditā api || 37 ||

These powers come to be within this mind. Later they turn outward and rise up out here, even though they never really rose at all.

vātasattā spandasattā sparśasattā tathaiva ca | tvaksattā tejasāṃ sattā tathā sattāprakāśinī || 38 ||

There is the existence of wind, the existence of movement, the existence of touch, and also the existence of skin, the existence of light, and the existence that shines through it all.

rūpasattā jalasattā svādusattā tathaiva ca | tathaiva rasasattā ca gandhasattā tathaiva ca || 39 ||

There is the existence of shape, the existence of water, the existence of sweetness, and also the existence of taste, and the existence of smell.

bhūsattā hemasattā ca piṇḍasattā ca pīvarī | deśasattā kālasattā sarvāḍhyākāravarjitā || 40 ||

There is the existence of earth, the existence of gold, the existence of matter, thick and heavy, the existence of place, the existence of time, yet none of this has any real form; it is free of every rich shape.

sarvasattāgaṇaṃ caitatkroḍīkṛtya svarūpavatsphuratyāśritya patrādi bījaṃ bījāditāṃ gatam || 41 ||

Taking in this whole group of existences, it shines out as though it were its own true form. Like a seed that puts out leaves and more, it becomes the very seed of all seeds.

etatpuryaṣṭakaṃ viddhi deho'yaṃ cātivāhikaḥapārabodhametattu sphuratyaṅga vibhāgavat || 42 ||

Know this as the body of eight parts. This same thing is the body that travels on. But really, dear one, this is awareness without limit, only it shines as if broken into pieces.

evamādyaṅgasaṃpannaṃ saṃpannaṃ na ca kiṃcanana jñānaṃ na ca tadrūpaṃ na vidācitacetanam || 43 ||

So furnished with all these parts, it is in truth furnished with nothing at all. It is not knowledge itself, nor does it have any form of its own, nor can it truly be known as living or lifeless.

paraṃ pare prasphuritaṃ kevalaṃ kevalātma satjalapīṭhasya jaṭhare jaladravavilāsavat || 44 ||

The Supreme, shining within the Supreme, alone, its nature the one absolute being, plays like a ripple moving within the deep of the ocean.

saṃvitsaṃvedanaikātma pṛthagetadacetanamsaṃpadyate parijñātaṃ saṃkalpanagaropamam || 45 ||

Awareness and consciousness are one single self. This, apart from that self, has no life of its own. Once it is truly known, it turns out to be only like a city built in thought.

saṃvedanātparijñānācchivatāmeva gacchati ajñātameva vā yattatkathaṃ gacchati vastutām || 46 ||

From awareness, from full knowledge, it goes indeed to the state of pure bliss. But if it remains unknown, how can it ever become a real thing?

athaitadvindate svāntaḥsaṃkalpādaṃśatā svataḥtanmātrasattā tasyāṇoretāṃ paśyati dehake || 47 ||

Now, through its own inner thought, this comes on its own to have a part, a fragment. It sees, in a small body, the subtle existence that belongs to that fragment.

sarvaṃ sthūlatvamāpannaṃ tadevāśu prapaśyatitasya tanmātrarandhrāṇi yathādeśaṃ prapaśyati || 48 ||

It quickly sees everything that has turned solid, and it sees, each set in its own place, the small openings of the subtle senses.

tataḥ puruṣarūpaikabhāvanātpuruṣākṛtimkākatālīyavaddṛṣṭvā tuṣṭaṃ puṣṭaṃ bhavatyalam || 49 ||

Then, from picturing only a human shape in the mind, it sees a human form appear, purely by chance, like a crow landing on a branch just as a fruit happens to fall from it, and it becomes very pleased and greatly satisfied.

jīvadetadavasthākaṃ sthitaṃ paśyati dehakamasantameva gandharvapuraṃ svapranaraṃ yathā || 50 ||

The living self sees this small body standing there in that condition, though it does not really exist at all, like a city in the sky, or like a man seen in a dream.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | gandharvanagarākāramapi svapnanaropamam | jagadduduḥkhāya duḥkhasya kātra yuktiḥ parikṣaye || 51 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Although it has the shape of a city in the sky, comparable to a man in a dream, the world causes sorrow. What means, then, is there to end this sorrow?

īśvara uvāca | vāsanāvaśato duḥkhaṃ vidyamāne ca sā bhavet | avidyamānaṃ ca jagannmṛgatṛṣṇāmbubhaṅgavat || 52 ||

Ishvara said: Sorrow comes through the force of desire, and it exists only so long as the world is taken to be real. But when the world is seen as unreal, it is like the vanishing of mirage water.

ataḥ kiṃ vāsyate kena kasya vā vāsanā kutaḥ | kathaṃ svapnanareṇāṅga mṛgatṛṣṇāmbu pīyate || 53 ||

So then, what is impressed by what? Whose desire is it, and where does it come from? Dear one, how can a man in a dream drink the water of a mirage?

sadrṣṭari tu sāhante samanomananādike | avidyamāne jagati yatsattatparidṛśyate || 54 ||

But in the true, real seer, mind and thought and the rest still stand. Even though the world does not really exist, whatever is real is still clearly seen.

yatra no vāsanā naiva vāsako naiva vāsyatā | kevalaṃ kevalībhāvaḥ saṃśāntakalanabhramaḥ || 55 ||

Where there is no desire, no one to plant it, and nothing planted by it, there remains only the one true state, all alone, where every confused notion of doing has come to complete rest.

yasya satyo'pyasatyo vā śūnya eva hi yakṣakaḥ | vilīnastasya kaivalyātkimanyadavaśiṣyate || 56 ||

Whether it is real or unreal, that spirit is nothing but empty air. Once it melts away into pure aloneness, what else could be left?

śūnya eva hi vetāla iveithaṃ cittavāsanā | uditeyaṃ jagannāmnī tacchāntau śāntirakṣatā || 57 ||

Just like an empty ghost, so indeed is the mind's desire: this, having arisen, is named 'the world.' When that is stilled, peace stands whole and unbroken.

ahantāyāṃ jagati ca mṛgatṛṣṇājale ca yaḥ | sāsthaṃ sthiṅghatanaraṃ nopadeśyastvasāviti || 58 ||

Whoever still trusts in the ego, in the world, and in the water of a mirage, that despised man is not to be taught, thinking he still can learn.

jīvaṃ vivekinamihopadiśanti tajjñā no bālamudbhramamasanmayamāryamuktam | ajñaṃ praśāsti kila yaḥ kanakāvadātāṃ sa svapnadṛṣṭapuruṣāya sutāṃ dadāti || 59 ||

The wise, following what the noble ones have taught, point to the discerning living self as the one fit to be taught, never to a childish, bewildered person made only of what is unreal. Whoever tries to teach a fool is indeed like a man who gives his gold-bright daughter in marriage to a man he saw only in a dream.
