Sri Vasishtha said: There are people settled in the practice of the joy of non-attachment, whose minds have grown vast, and who, even while dealing in the affairs of the world, remain inwardly free of grief and fear -- so it stands.
Such a person's body may seem shaken though it is not shaken, because his awareness never wavers; being inwardly full, a radiance is seen on his face, like the radiance of the moon.
Whose mind is free of clinging to things it knows, and rests only on pure awareness, and so has lost its fever -- because of him, people become calm and clear, the way muddy water is cleared by a purifying seed.
The knower is always absorbed in the sight of his own Self, settled in himself; even though he seems restless, he is seen as agitated only in appearance, not in truth -- like the reflected sun, which seems to shake but does not.
Great souls who delight in the Self, awakened, risen to the highest state, seem outwardly to tremble like the tip of a peacock feather, but inwardly they are unmoving like Mount Meru.
A mind that has reached the nature of the Self does not take on the colour of pleasure and pain, just as a polished crystal, even placed next to a colour, does not take on that colour.
saṃsāradṛṣṭiruditaṃ jñātalokaparāvaram| na rañjayati saccittaṃ jalalekhā yathāmbujam || 7 ||
Though the higher and the lower worlds are fully known, the sight of this world that arises does not stain a true mind, just as a streak of water does not soak into a lotus.
One whose being is filled with meditation on the Self keeps the awakening of the supreme Self even outside formal meditation; free of the stain of mental imagining, such a person is called one attached to his own Self.
By delighting in the Self, a person here attains freedom from attachment. Only through knowledge of the Self does attachment grow less -- never in any other way.
Even while awake, the living being becomes like one in deep, dreamless sleep, O Raghava. Having reached this vision, he is free of all opposites, ever without rising or setting.
Here, having grown fully ripe, he reaches a purity like the sun's -- just as, through its change of phase, the moon becomes like the sun on the night of the new moon.
When the mind has left behind the state of an ordinary, restless mind, the condition of those whose mental activity has quieted is called thought now at peace -- deep, dreamless sleep right within waking.
Having reached that state of deep, dreamless sleep, a person, while alive and going about the business of the world, is never dragged by the ropes of pleasure and pain.
One who, established in deep, dreamless sleep even while awake, carries out the actions of the world -- to him, like to a mechanical puppet, the feeling of pleasure and pain never comes.
The power that troubles the mind, that brings the pain of things coming into being and passing away -- once the mind has reached the state of the Self, what can trouble it, and how?
With his mind as if asleep, doing the same actions as before but caring nothing for them, such a person is not bound -- he stands as one who is free while still alive.
sauṣuptīṃ vṛttimāśritya kuru mā kuru vānagha | karma prakṛtijaṃ pākavaśādupagataṃ sthitam || 17 ||
Rest in this state like deep sleep, sinless one, and do it or do not do it — the action that is born of your own nature, and that comes to you through the ripening of your past deeds, goes on just the same.
Without real understanding, neither taking up action nor giving it up is right. Those who have known the self simply carry on, going along with whatever comes their way.
kurvannapi na kartāsi suṣuptyaikasthayā dhiyā | akartāpi ca kartāsi yathecchasi tathā kuru || 19 ||
Even while you act, if your mind rests only in that sleep-like stillness, you are not the doer. And even without acting, you can still be the doer. So act just as you wish.
Settled in that state beyond thought and beyond mind, his intellect asleep even while he is awake, the man who has found the self is not the doer of whatever he does.
Reaching this state like deep sleep, and free of all desire in his own mind, the wise man grows cool inside, the way the moon is cool by its own nature.
Abiding in that state like deep sleep, full of great brightness, whole like the orb of the full moon, he stays the same in every condition, as a mountain stays the same through the changing seasons.
The steady-minded one, settled in that state like deep sleep, may outwardly seem restless and active, but there is no real shaking in his actions — like a mountain that seems to move but does not tremble.
Having become established in that sleep-like state, free of all taint, either drop the body at once, or else hold on to it for a long time, unmoved like a mountain.
Free from grief, fear, and struggle, the confusion of worldly life gone, the self-possessed man who has risen to the Fourth state does not fall back again.
Having reached his own sacred state, the steady-minded man, like one standing on a mountain looking down, watches this whole deluded world wandering below, and laughs.
In this Fourth state, having reached that imperishable condition, because he is dissolved wholly and only in bliss, he passes into the state beyond even bliss.
The yogi who has passed beyond even a trace of both no-bliss and great bliss, and beyond that too, is called liberated — he has reached the state beyond the Fourth.
All the bonds of rebirth completely melted away, all his dark self-pride completely dissolved, the great soul passes into the being that is made of supreme essence, like a lump of salt that has dissolved into water.
