Parigha said: O king, O sinless one, whatever work is done in this net of the world, it brings happiness only to one whose mind is settled — not to another.
yo jño mahātman satataṃ tiṣṭhantyavaharaṃśca vā | asamāhitacitto'sau kadā bhavati kaḥ kila || 5 ||
O great soul, when does the knower — who stays the same always, whether resting still or engaged in action — ever have an unsettled mind? Who could that be?
Those whose minds are always awake stay fixed in the one reality of the self even while carrying out the actions of the world, and so are always truly settled in samadhi.
But for someone whose inner nature is restless, even if he sits locked in the lotus posture with hands folded in worship, what samadhi does he have, and how?
Free of anxiety, having already reached everything worth wanting, beyond both what to accept and what to reject, and completely full — that state of mind is what is called samadhi.
Just as the units of time keep gathering motion yet still remain fixed as time, so the movements of the world, being nothing but pure awareness, free of any sense of this or that, likewise keep gathering, yet remain just as fixed.
na saṃbhavati saṃsāre guṇahīno guṇī yathā | na saṃbhavatyātmasaṃvidvarjito hyātmavāṃstathā || 20 ||
Just as, in this world, something that has a certain quality cannot at the same time be without that quality, so a person who truly has the self cannot at the same time be without awareness of the self.
tasmātkadācidapi me nāsamādhimayaṃ manaḥ | na vā samāhitaṃ nityamātmatattvaikasambhavāt || 23 ||
So my mind is never, at any time, without samadhi; yet it does not simply remain fixed in samadhi as a state either, since it arises only as the one reality of the self.
The self is present everywhere, always, and it is everything, in every way — so who could there be without samadhi? And who, then, is the one said to have it?
nityaṃ samāhitadhiyaḥ susamā mahāntastiṣṭhanti kāryapariṇāmavibhāgamuktāḥ | tenāsamāhitasamāhitabhedabhaṅgyā nityoditaḥ kva nu sa uttamavākprapañcaḥ || 25 ||
The great ones, their minds forever settled and always the same, stand free of the divisions that come from change and action. So, through this very way of telling apart the unsettled from the settled, where, really, does all this elaborate talk about it stand?
