That state is looked into by the meaning of the scriptures, by the teacher, and by one's own mind, but only for as long as it takes, until, by wearing away everything that is seen, that state is finally reached.
Through the joint working of dispassion, practice, the meaning of the scriptures, insight, and the teacher, a person reaches that sacred state, or else through insight alone, by itself.
Sri Rama said: Lord, master of all that has been and all that will be, one person who has reached samadhi stays at rest, as if fully awake, even while he is busy with worldly life.
Sri Vasishtha said: For someone who sees this whole bundle of qualities as not being himself, a coolness settles inside him. That coolness is what is called samadhi.
Once he has settled it in his mind that his link to everything he sees is only in the mind, and so has grown cool and calm inside, one such person stays busy with worldly work, another stays settled in meditation.
If a man sits in the posture of samadhi but his mind is still restless and unsteady, then that samadhi of his is no different from the wild dance of a madman.
And if a man dances about like a madman, but his mind has worn away all its inner cravings, then even his mad behavior is equal to the samadhi of one who is fully awake.
The man who is awake while he lives an ordinary life, and the man who is awake while he stays in the forest, are truly equal to each other. Both of them, without doubt, have reached that state.
When such a mind's inner cravings have worn thin, it acts, yet is not really the one acting, like someone listening to a story whose mind has wandered off somewhere else.
But a mind whose cravings are thick and solid feels like the doer even when it does nothing, like a sleeping body that lies perfectly still while in the dream it is falling into a pit.
That state in which the mind is no longer the doer of anything, that is the highest samadhi. Know it to be the state of standing alone as oneself, that highest and truly good peace.
Whether the mind is restless or still is the real cause behind both meditation and its absence. So work on that mind alone, and stop any new thought from sprouting in it.
avāsanaṃ sthiraṃ proktaṃ manodhyānaṃ tadeva tu | sa eva kevalībhāvaḥ śāntataiva ca sā sadā || 17 ||
A mind that is free of these cravings and steady, that alone is real meditation. That alone is the state of standing purely as oneself, and that alone is true and lasting peace.
tanuvāsanamatyuccaiḥ padāyodyatamucyate | avāsanaṃ mano kartṛpadaṃ tasmādavāpyate || 18 ||
A mind whose cravings have thinned is said to be climbing toward that highest state; a mind wholly free of cravings then reaches the state of the doer.
This mind, when its cravings are thick, becomes the seat of being the doer, and being the doer brings all suffering. So one should thin out these cravings.
When a person's concern for the world grows calm, and inside he is free of grief, fear, and craving, and his self comes to rest in itself, that is what is known as samadhi.
Once you have let go, in your mind, of the feeling that you are all these things, then stay just as you are, whether that is on a mountain or in a house.
O slayer of enemy warriors, for someone whose mind is intoxicated with its own restless activity, even a lonely forest feels like a city crowded with people.
One in whom wanting and not wanting have both faded away, whose inner being has spread out to fill everything, and for whom all things are equal, he is called one whose mind is composed.
The mind does not see this world as it really is, one with the eternal self. It is the same in this waking state as it is in a dream, O lord of men.
Just as, to someone with no stake in it, people bustling about a marketplace seem as if they do not even exist, so too, for one who knows the truth, a village is just like a forest, because he has no bond with it.
For one whose mind is always turned inward, everything becomes like open space, because this world, crowded with living beings, holds nothing for him to make use of.
Just as a banyan tree is already contained within a banyan seed, whatever lies within the true self shines outward when it unfolds, like the scent that appears when a flower blossoms.
na bahiṣṭhaṃ na cāntaḥsthaṃ kvacitkiñcana vidyate | yadyathā kacitaṃ cittvāttattathā tattvamutthitam || 37 ||
Nothing anywhere truly exists as outside or as inside. Whatever appears, appears out of the nature of consciousness, and reality arises exactly as that appearance.
The self alone shines forth vastly, as the world and as the sense of I, as what is outer and what is inner, and that self, which pervades everything, is neither unreal nor real.
Through the outer side, the inner part appears outside. Through the inner side, it stays inside. This self sees its own mind exactly as it comes to be known.
sabāhyābhyantaraṃ śāntamātmano bheditaṃ jagat| ahaṃtvādisthite bhede bhūribhaṅgabhayaṃ tu tat || 41 ||
The world, both outside and inside, is nothing but the self at peace. But once it is split apart, once division sets in, starting with the notion of I, that split brings great fear of shattering.
Sky, earth, wind, space, mountains, rivers, the directions, for someone whose mind is struck by anguish, all of this has been ablaze since the very beginning of creation.
But whoever, while performing actions with the body's organs, delights within only in the self, and is not ruled by joy or sorrow, he is called one whose mind is composed.
The one who sees the self as present everywhere, whose mind has grown completely calm, and who neither grieves nor broods, he is called truly composed.
same pare'pi nāhaṃtā na jagajjanmano mayi | vīcivṛndeṣvivātaptā nākāśe phaladhātavaḥ || 46 ||
Even in that supreme sameness there is no I; the world's birth is not really in me either, just as a mass of waves carries no separate heat of its own, just as no ore is ever found in the sky.
yasyāntarasthitāhantvaṃ na vibhāgādi no manaḥ | na cetanācetanatve so'sti nāstītaro janaḥ || 47 ||
In whom there dwells no I, no division, no mind at all, and no difference between the conscious and the unconscious, he alone truly is, there is no other person.
He is clear as the sky, and rightly carries out his outward actions in the world; amid the disturbance of joy and anger, his calm stays as unmoved as a piece of wood or a clod of earth.
The one who looks on all beings as he looks on himself, and on others' wealth as no more than a clod of earth, doing this from his own nature, not from fear, he alone truly sees.
artho'tanustanurvāpi nāsadrūpeṇa cetayate | sadrūpo nānubhūto'jñe na jñenaiva na tattayā || 50 ||
A thing, whether formless or having a form, is never known as unreal. But the truly real is not experienced by the ignorant, nor even by the knower, nor by identity with it.
The one with such a mind, who has reached the state of a truly great soul, let him stay still, rise up, go away, or even die, he never departs from that steady state.
Let him live in a home of his own filled with the finest pleasures, or among crowds of people, or in a very great forest where all pleasure is given up.
Let him dance wild with passion, or give himself entirely to drink; or, having given up every attachment, let him go with the same even mind to a mountain.
nāsau kiṃcinna tatkiṃcitkṛtaṃ tena mahātmanānāsau kalaṅkamāpnoti hema paṅkagataṃ yathā || 56 ||
That great soul does nothing at all, nothing whatsoever is done by him, he never becomes stained, just as gold does not become stained even lying in mud.
saṃvitpuruṣaśabdārthaiḥ sa kalaṅkaiḥ kalaṃkyateahaṃtvaṃvāsanārūpaiḥ śuktikārajatopamaiḥ || 57 ||
He seems stained only by the meanings behind words like awareness and person, forms taken by the mere sense of I, the way a shell is mistaken for silver.
Through the quieting of every object, through right knowledge of one's own nature exactly as it is, that inner stain calms down of itself, because it was never real to begin with.
Because of the harm born from this sense of I, though his true self is only awareness, a person meets all kinds of pleasure and pain, birth after birth.
Just as, once the mistaken sight of a snake on a rope has calmed down, there comes the relief of knowing there is no snake at all, so too, once the sense of I has calmed down, an evenness of mind is known to arise within.
yatkaroti yadaśnāti yaddadāti juhoti vā | na tajjñasya na tatra jño mā karotu karotu vā || 61 ||
Whatever he does, whatever he eats, whatever he gives or offers, none of it belongs to the one who knows; the knower has no part in it, whether he does it or not.
Action brings him no gain, and inaction brings him no gain either. Since he has understood his own true nature, he remains settled in the self alone.
All this is he, and he alone is this whole world entire, there is no division here at all. He is the one form of the Supreme Being, the purifier, he is called the Real, yet that Real is not a thing at all, and he is not a thing either.
