15.39.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti saṃcintya sarvātmā kṣīrodādātmakātpurāt | cacāla parivāreṇa saha sānurivācalaḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having thought this, Vishnu, the self of all, set out from his own city in the ocean of milk, together with his companions, like a mountain moving along with its slopes.

kṣīrodatalarandhreṇa tenaiva stambhitāmbhasā | prahlādanagaraṃ prāpa śakralokamivāparam || 2 ||

Through an opening in the floor of the ocean of milk, holding its waters still by that very passage, he reached the city of Prahlada, as if reaching another world of Indra.

hemamandirakośasthaṃ dadarśātrāsuraṃ hariḥ | atha śailaguhālīnaṃ samādhisthamivābjajam || 3 ||

There Vishnu saw Prahlada sitting in the inner room of his golden palace, like Brahma, the lotus-born, sitting in deep meditation inside a mountain cave.

tatra te tejasā daityā vaiṣṇavenāvadhūlitā | dūraṃ yayurdineśāṃśuvitrasā iva kauśikāḥ || 4 ||

There those demons, scattered by Vishnu's brightness, fled far away, like owls frightened by the rays of the sun.

dvitrairmukhyaismukhyaiḥ sahāsurairmukhyaismukhyaiḥ parivārayuto hariḥ | praviveśāsauragṛhaṃ tārāvānivakhaṃ śaśī || 5 ||

Along with two or three chief demons, and surrounded by his own company, Vishnu entered the demon's palace, like the moon entering a sky full of stars.

65.39.6

vainateyāsanastho'sau lakṣmīvidhutacāmaraḥ | svāyudhādiparīvāro devarṣimunivanditaḥ || 6 ||

He sat there upon Garuda, fans waving over him at Lakshmi's hand, his own weapons around him as his escort, honored by gods, divine sages, and sages.

mahātmansaṃprabudhyasvetyeveṃ viṣṇurudāharan | pāñcajanyaṃ pradadhmau ca dhvanayankakubhāṃ gaṇam || 7 ||

Saying, "Great one, awaken!" Vishnu spoke, then blew his conch Panchajanya, and its sound filled every direction.

mahatā tena śabdena vaiṣṇavaprāṇajanmanā | tulyakālaparikṣubdhakalpābhrārṇavaraṃhasā || 8 ||

That was a great sound, born from Vishnu's own breath, coming with the force of the clouds of the world's end and a churned ocean, both together.

āsurī janatā bhūmau papātāgatasaṃbhramā | mattalīlābhranādena rājahaṃsāvalī yathā || 9 ||

The demon people fell to the ground, suddenly seized by panic, like a row of royal swans falling at the roar of clouds in wild play.

jaharṣa janitānandā vaiṣṇavī gatasaṃbhramā | janatā jaladadhvānaphullaiva kuṭajāvalī || 10 ||

Vishnu's own people, filled with joy, their fear gone, rejoiced, like a row of kutaja trees blossoming at the sound of clouds.

babhūva saṃprabuddhātmā dānaveśaḥ śanaiḥśanaiḥ | meghāvasara utphullakadamba iva kānane || 11 ||

Slowly, gradually, Prahlada, the lord of the demons, became fully awake, like a kadamba tree blossoming in the forest when the rains come.

brahmarandhrakṛtotthānā prāṇaśaktirathāsuram | śanairākramayāmāsa gaṅgā sarvamivārṇavam || 12 ||

Then the power of his life-breath, rising up from the opening at the crown of his head, slowly spread through Prahlada completely, as the Ganga spreads through the whole ocean.

kṣaṇādākramayāmāsa prāṇaśrīḥ sarvato'suram | udayānantaraṃ saurī prabheva bhuvanāntaram || 13 ||

In an instant, the splendor of his life-breath spread through Prahlada completely, like the sun's light spreading over another world the moment after it rises.

prāṇeṣu randhranavake pravṛtteṣvatha tasya cit | cetyondmukhī babhūvāntaḥ prāṇadarpaṇabimbitā || 14 ||

Then, when the life-breaths had begun moving through the nine openings of his body, his awareness turned to face the world outside, mirrored within the mirror of his own breath.

cetanīyonmukhī cetyaṃ cinmanastāmupāyayau | dvitvaṃ mukurasaṃkrāntā mukhaśrīriva rāghava || 15 ||

O Rama, that awareness, turning to face the object before it, became mind, as the beauty of a face, cast into a mirror, becomes two.

kiṃcid aṅkurite citte netre vikasanonmukhe | śanair bhabhūvatus tasya prātarnīle yathotpale || 16 ||

When his mind had begun to stir just a little, his two eyes, about to open, slowly came awake, like two blue lotuses opening at dawn.

prāṇāpānaparāmṛṣṭānāḍīvivarasaṃvidaḥ | vātārtasyeva padmasya spando'sya samajāyata || 17 ||

A quiver arose in the awareness within his body's channels, now stirred by the breath going in and the breath going out, like a lotus trembling in the wind.

nimeṣāntaramātreṇa manaḥ pīvaratāṃ yayau | tasminprāṇavaśātpūrṇe taraṅga iva vāriṇi || 18 ||

In the space of a single blink, his mind grew full and firm, like a wave rising in water once the water is filled by the force of the breath.

athāsau vikasannetramanaḥprāṇavapurbabhau | ardhodita ivāditye saraḥ sphuritapaṅkajam || 19 ||

Then he shone forth, his eyes, mind, breath, and body all opening together, like a lake with its lotuses opening and glistening when the sun is half risen.

205.39.20

asminnavasare yāvadbudhyasvetyavadadvibhuḥ | prabuddhastāvadeṣo'bhūdbarhī ghanaravādiva || 20 ||

At that very moment, the instant the Lord said, "Awaken!", Prahlada became fully awake, like a peacock stirred by the roar of clouds.

praPhullanayanaṃ jātamananaṃ pīvarasmṛtim uvācainaṃ trilokeśaḥ purā nābhyabjajaṃ yathā || 21 ||

To him now, his eyes open, his thought risen, his memory grown full, the Lord of the three worlds spoke, just as he once spoke, long ago, to the one born from the lotus of his own navel.

sādho smara mahālakṣmīmātmīyāṃ smara cākṛtim akāṇḍa eva kiṃ dehavirāmaḥ kriyate tvayā || 22 ||

Good man, remember your own great glory, and remember your true form. Why, for no reason at all, are you putting an end to your body?

heyopādeyasaṃkalpavihīnasya śarīragaiḥ bhāvābhāvais tavārthaḥ kimuttiṣṭhottiṣṭha saṃprati || 23 ||

For one who is free of every thought of what to take and what to leave, what does it matter whether the body comes to be or ceases to be? Rise, rise now!

sthātavyamiha dehena kalpaṃ yāvadanena te vayaṃ hi niyatiṃ vidmo yathābhūtāmaninditām || 24 ||

You must stay here with this body for a whole age of the world, for we truly know your fate as it is, and there is nothing to blame in it.

jīvanmuktena bhavatā rājya eveha tiṣṭhatā kṣepaṇīyā gatodvegamākalpāntamiyaṃ tanuḥ || 25 ||

You, who are freed while still living, should stay right here in your kingdom, and let this body pass, free of all worry, until the end of this age.

tanvāṃ kalpāntaśīrṇāyāṃ sve mahimni tvayānagha| vastavyaṃ sphuṭite kumbhe kumbhākāśena khe yathā || 26 ||

O sinless one, when this body crumbles away at the end of the age, you must dwell in your own greatness, as the space held inside a pot, when the pot breaks, comes to dwell in the open sky.

kalpāntasthāyinī śuddhā dṛṣṭalokaparāvarā| iyaṃ tava tanurjātā jīvanmuktavilāsinī || 27 ||

This body of yours has become pure, lasting until the end of the age, one that has seen the worlds both high and low, the very playground of one who is freed while still living.

noditā dvādaśādityā na pralīnāḥ śiloccayāḥ| na jagajjvalitaṃ sādho tanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 28 ||

The twelve suns have not risen, the mountains have not melted away, and the world has not caught fire. Good man, why are you giving up your body for nothing?

vāyurvahati nonmattastrilokībhasmadhūsaraḥ| lolāmarakapālāṅkastanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 29 ||

The wind is not blowing wild, grey with the ashes of the three worlds, strewn with the trembling skulls of the gods. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

aśoka iva mañjaryaḥ puṣkarāvartavidyutaḥ| na sphuranti jagatkośe tanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 30 ||

The lightning of the Pushkaravarta clouds is not flashing across the world's shell like clusters of ashoka blossoms. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

dharāsārarṇacchailāḥ prajvalajjvalanōjjvalāḥ | kakubhō na viśīryantē tanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 31 ||

The mountains are not roaring under torrents of stone and blazing with leaping fire, and the four directions are not crumbling to pieces. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

na brahmaviṣṇurudrākhyatrayīśēṣamidaṃ sthitam | jagajjaraṭhajīmūtaṃ tanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 32 ||

This world, an old worn-out cloud, has not shrunk down to a mere trace of the three called Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

na cehādridalśrēṇimātraiakānumitāntarāḥ | diśō jarjaratāṃ yātāstanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 33 ||

And here, the four directions, marked apart only by lines of shattered mountain rock, have not crumbled to pieces. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

sphuṭadadrīndraṭaṅkārāḥ karāḥ saurā bhramanti khe | kalpābhrāṇi na garjanti tanuṃ tyajasi kiṃ mudhā || 34 ||

The sun's rays that crack great mountains with a clang are not roaming the sky, and the doomsday clouds are not thundering. Why are you giving up your body for nothing?

ahaṃ bhūtāvakīrṇāsu sālokāsu khagadhvajaḥ | viharāmi daśāśāsu mā dehamavadhīraya || 35 ||

I, who carry a bird on my banner, wander in the ten directions filled with living beings and their worlds. Do not scorn your body.

ime vayamime śailā bhūtānīmānyayaṃ bhavān| idaṃ jagadidaṃ vyoma mā dehamavadhīraya || 36 ||

We are all this. These are the mountains. These are the living beings. You, too, are this. This is the world. This is the sky. Do not scorn your body.

pīvarājñānayogena yasya paryākulaṃ manaḥ| duḥkhāni vinikṛntanti maraṇa tasya rājate || 37 ||

The one whose mind is confused by thick ignorance, and whom sufferings tear apart, for him death reigns.

The one whose mind is robbed by thoughts like I am weak, I am in great pain, I am a fool, and other such thoughts, for him death reigns.

āśāpāśanibaddho’ntaritaścetaśca nīyate| yo vilolamanovṛttyā maraṇaṃ tasya rājate || 39 ||

The one bound by the rope of desire, dragged inwardly along by his own restless mind, for him death reigns.

yasya tṛṣṇāḥ prabhañjanti hṛdayaṃ hṛtabhāvanāḥ| prarohamiva gardhebhyo maraṇaṃ tasya rājate || 40 ||

The one whose cravings carry off his very feelings and shatter his heart, the way greed destroys a tender shoot, for him death reigns.

cittavṛttilatā yasya tālottālamanovane | phalitā sukhaduḥkhābhyāṃ maraṇaṃ tasya rājate || 41 ||

The one whose creeper of restless thoughts has grown wild in the tangled forest of his mind, bearing fruit as pleasure and pain, for him death reigns.
