puṇya uvāca kaḥ pitā kiṃ ca vā mitraṃ kā mātā ke ca bāndhavāḥ svabuddhyeva avadhūyante vātyayā janapāṃsavaḥ || 1 ||
Punya said: Who is a father? What is a friend? Who is a mother, and who are relatives? By one's own understanding alone, they are swept away, like dust raised by a crowd is scattered by a storm wind.
If you think of someone as family, he becomes family. If you think of him as a stranger, he becomes a stranger. Like poison and nectar, everything here depends only on what you think.
Who is your father? Who is your friend? Who is your mother, and who is a stranger? Tell me, for this endless open sky, what is not mine and what is mine?
asi cet tvaṃ tadanyeṣu yāteṣu bahujanmasu | ye bandhavo ye vibhavāḥ kiṃ tānapi na śocasi || 8 ||
If you say I am this person, then think of your many earlier lives that have passed. Why do you not grieve, too, for the family and the wealth you had in them?
On the Vindhya mountains you were a peepal tree; in a great banyan tree, a wood-boring worm; on Mount Mandara, a rooster; and in a mountain cave, you were born a brahmin.
yaḥ kīṭastālakandāntarmashakō ya udumbarē | yaḥ prāgbakō vindhyavanē sa tvaṃ putra mamānujaḥ || 18 ||
The worm that lived inside the root of a palm tree, the mosquito that lived in a fig tree, the crane that once lived in the Vindhya forest — that was you, my son, my younger brother.
In Trigarta I was born as a parrot; on a riverbank I was born as a frog; in forests I was born as a quail; and now I have been born here in this forest.
I lived as a Pulinda tribesman in the Vindhya hills, became a tree in Vanga, and even became a camel on the Vindhya mountain; and now I have been born here in this forest.
yaścātako himagirau yo rājā pauṇḍramanḍale | vyāghro yaḥ sahyakuñjeṣu sa evāhaṃ tavāgrajaḥ || 27 ||
The one who was a chataka bird on the snowy mountain, who was a king in the land of Paundra, who was a tiger in the groves of Sahya - that very one am I, your elder brother.
yo gṛdhro daśavarṣāṇi yo grāho māsapañcakam | yaḥ samānāṃ śataṃ siṃhaḥ sa eveha tavāgrajaḥ || 28 ||
The one who was a vulture for ten years, who was a crocodile for five months, who was a lion for a hundred years - that very one is here, your elder brother.
I was a chakora bird in a village of Andhra, a king among the kings of Tushara, and the son of the teacher of Shrishaila. I tell you this now, though it may sound like boasting.
All these many kinds of worldly lives, full of all sorts of behavior and actions, are only the playthings of the confusion of being born - I now remember them as my own past.
kāṃstānsamanuśocāvo na śocāvaśca kānapi| bandhūnihātiśocāva īdṛśyeva jagadgatiḥ || 32 ||
For which of them should we grieve, and for which should we not grieve? Let us not grieve too much for kinsmen here - such indeed is the way of the world.
Give up the feeling of this world that sits fixed in the mind as 'I', and go to that place - good fortune to you - which those who know the true path go to.
You have no sorrow, you have no birth, you have no mother, you have no father - you are the self alone, you who know the truth; you are surely nothing else.
In this journey through worldly life, which hands out many kinds of roles to play, only the ignorant, among men, are filled with the feeling that it is real and good.
But those who know the truth are impartial in their view, at ease within themselves, seeing things just as they come. They remain mere onlookers, standing firm as witnesses.
Though they act, those who know the truth are not really the doers of their acts - just as lamps, when night falls, simply do the work of giving light. In just this way, those who know the truth go on living in the world.
A mirror or a jewel is not touched by the reflections that appear in it, even though those images belong to it. In the same way, the wise, though they act, are not touched by their actions.
My child, through your own self, seated in the middle of the lotus of the heart, and taught by this great sage himself, who is free from every trace of craving and rests calmly in his own being - give up all this confusion, no more of it, and come to true contentment.
