Vasishtha said: Rama, lotus-eyed one, those who know this say that giving up desire is, in every case, of two kinds, one to be known and one to be practiced, giver of honor.
antaḥśītalayā buddhyā kurvatyā līlayā kriyām | yo nūnaṃ vāsanātyāgo dhyeyo rāma sa kīrtitaḥ || 9 ||
When the mind stays cool inside while it goes on doing its everyday work as if in play, that giving up of desire, Rama, is truly called the kind to be practiced.
When someone understands everything with the same even mind, and through this destroys desire completely, and then, holding nothing as his own, gives up the body, that ending of desire is the kind to be known.
Whoever gives up desire completely, down to its very root, and reaches peace, know him, descendant of Raghu, to be freed through the giving up of the kind called to be known.
Having carried out that giving up of desire which must be practiced, they go on living playfully, great and good souls who are free while alive, Janaka and others like him.
But those who complete the giving up of desire that is to be known, and reach complete stillness, become freed without a body. They remain only in Brahman, which is both the farthest and the nearest.
Whether such a person's mind is engaged in action or free of it, within, in the one pure self, there is no difference, sinless one. One of them remains with the body still active, the other remains with the body come to rest.
One stays alive in his body, freed, his inner burning gone. The other has given up the body and is freed, existing in a state beyond all trace of desire, beyond knowing.
When pleasure and pain keep coming, one after another, in their own time, the one who neither rejoices in them nor is worn down by them, he indeed is called free.
The one for whom, among things liked and disliked, there is no longer any wanted or unwanted, who goes through life as if in deep, dreamless sleep, he is called free.
heyopādeyakalane mametyahamihaiti ca | yasyāntaḥ saṃparikṣīṇe sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 20 ||
The one within whom the very sense of to be rejected and to be accepted, of this is mine and here I am, has completely worn away, he is called free while alive.
harṣāmarṣabhayakrodhakāmakārpaṇyadṛṣṭibhiḥ | na parāmṛśyate yo'ntaḥ sa jīvanmukta ucyate || 21 ||
The one who, within, is not gripped by joy, resentment, fear, anger, desire, or a mean and needy outlook, he is called free while alive.
He whose mind has gone completely calm inside, so that he stays as if in deep sleep even while wide awake at all times, who is whole, like the moon with all its phases, and whom everyone always delights to see, he, here, is remembered as the free one.
Valmiki said: When the sage had finished speaking, the day came to an end. The sun went down to keep the evening rites. The assembly bowed in respect and went to bathe, and returned as the daylight faded away together with the sun's last rays.
