14.5.1

śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavansarvadharmajña pūrvāparavidāṃ vara | ayaṃ manasi saṃsāraḥ sphāraḥ kathamiva sthitaḥ || 1 ||

Rama said: Lord, you know every truth, best among those who know the beginning and the end. How does this vast world stand in the mind?

yathāyaṃ manasi sphāraḥ saṃsāraḥ sphurati sphuran | dṛṣṭāntadṛṣṭyā sphuṭayā tathā kathaya me'nagha || 2 ||

Tell me clearly, with a plain example, how this vast world flashes and appears in the mind, faultless one.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yathaindavānāṃ viprāṇāṃ jagantyavapuṣāmapi | sthitāni jātadārḍhyāni manasīdaṃ tathā sthitam || 3 ||

Vasishtha said: Take the moon-brahmins. Their worlds had no bodies, yet once formed they stood firm. This world stands fixed in the mind the same way.

lavaṇasya yathā rājñaścendrajālākulākṛteḥ | caṇḍālatvamanuprāptaṃ tathedaṃ manasi sthitam || 4 ||

Just as King Lavana's very shape was thrown into confusion by a magician's illusion, and he came to live as an outcaste, so this stands fixed in the mind.

bhārgavasya ciraṃ kālaṃ svargabhogabubhukṣayā | yathā bhogādhināthatvaṃ saṃsāritvaṃ babhūva ca || 5 ||

For a long time, from a wish to enjoy heaven's pleasures, Bhrigu's son became a ruler over pleasures, and so fell into worldly life.

bhogeshvaratvaṃ cha yathā tathedaṃ manasi sthitam| śrīrāma uvācha| bhagavanbhṛguputrasya svargabhogabubhukṣhayā || 6 ||

And how he became a lord of pleasures, that is how this stands fixed in the mind. Rama said: Lord, by the wish of Bhrigu's son to enjoy heaven's pleasures,

kathaṃ bhogādhināthatvaṃ saṃsāritvaṃ babhūva cha| śrīvasiṣṭha uvācha| śṛṇu rāma purā vṛttaṃ saṃvādaṃ bhṛgukālayoḥ || 7 ||

how did he become a ruler over pleasures, and how did he fall into worldly life? Vasishtha said: Listen, Rama, to what happened long ago, the talk between Bhrigu and Kala.

sānau mandarashailasya tamālaviṭapākule| purā mandarashailasya sānau kusumasaṅkule || 8 ||

There was a ridge of Mount Mandara, thick with tamala tree branches. Long ago, that same ridge of Mount Mandara was crowded with flowers.

atapyata tapo ghoraṃ kasmiṃścidbhagavānbhṛguḥ| tamupāste sma tejasvī bālaḥ putro mahāmatiḥ || 9 ||

There, at one time, the lord Bhrigu practiced fierce austerities. A radiant, wise young boy, his son, waited on him.

śukraḥ sakalacandrābhaḥ prakāśa iva bhāsuraḥ| bhṛgurvanavare tasmin samādhāveva saṃsthitaḥ || 10 ||

Shukra shone like the full moon, bright as light itself. Bhrigu, in that fine forest, stayed fixed in deep meditation.

sarvakālaṃ samutkīrṇo vanopalatalādiva| śukraḥ kusumaśayyāsu kaladhautājireṣu ca || 11 ||

At all times he sat still, as if carved from the bare rock of the forest. Shukra, meanwhile, played on beds of flowers and in courtyards of gold,

mandaroddāmadolāsu bālo ramaṇalīlayā| vidyāvidyādṛśormadhye śukraḥ prāptamahāpadaḥ || 12 ||

and on Mount Mandara's long swings, a boy at play, delighting in his games. Caught between the sight of knowledge and the sight of ignorance, Shukra fell into great danger.

triśaṅkuriva rodontaravartata tadākulaḥ| nirvikalpasamādhisthē sa kadācitpitaryatha || 13 ||

He was restless then, like Trishanku hanging between heaven and earth, while his father, at that time, sat deep in thought-free meditation.

avyagrō'bhavadēkāntē jitāririva bhūmipaḥ| dadarśāpsarasaṃ tatra gacchantīṃ nabhasaḥ pathā || 14 ||

Then, alone, he grew free of restlessness, like a king who has beaten his enemies. There he saw a nymph of heaven moving along a path in the sky.

kṣīrodamadhyalulitāṃ lakṣmīmiva janārdanaḥ| mandāramālāvalitāṃ mandānilacalālakām || 15 ||

He saw her as Vishnu once saw Lakshmi tossed in the middle of the Ocean of Milk, garlanded with mandara flowers, her curls stirring in a soft breeze.

164.5.16

hārajhaṅkārigamanāṃ sugandhitanabhonilām | lāvaṇyapādapalatāṃ madaghūrṇitalocanām || 16 ||

Her necklace jingled as she moved, her fragrance perfumed the sky's breeze. She was like a vine twining the tree of beauty, her eyes swimming as if drunk.

amṛtīkṛtataddeśāṃ dehendūdayadīptibhiḥ | kāntāmālokya tasyābhūdullasattaralaṃ manaḥ || 17 ||

Her body's rising moonlike glow turned that whole place into nectar. Seeing that lovely woman, his mind grew restless with delight.

dṛṣṭanirmalapūrṇenduvapurambunidheriva | sāpyālokya śukramukhaṃ tathā paravaśā hyabhūt || 18 ||

And she too, seeing Shukra's face, was swept away the same way, like the ocean rising at the sight of the clear, full moon.

manasijeṣu parāhatamāśayaṃ sa paribodhya manastadanūśanā | vigalitetaravṛttitayātmanā sa ca vadhūmay a eva vabhūva ha || 19 ||

Shukra felt the god of love strike down his mind. Everything else in him dissolved away, and he became nothing but that woman, his whole self turned into her.
