14.44.1

śrīrāma uvāca | krameṇānena yenāptā jīvena sthitirātmanaḥ | sa kathaṃ bhagavandehaṃ samādhatte'sthipañjaram || 1 ||

Sri Rama said: through the process by which a soul settles into being an individual self, how, lord, does it then take on a body, a cage of bones?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | pūrvameva mayā proktaṃ rāma kiṃ nāvabudhyase | pūrvāparavicārārhā śemuṣī kva gatā tava || 2 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: I have already told you this before, Rama. Why do you not understand it? Where has your good sense gone, the sense that can weigh what comes before and after?

yadidaṃ hi śarīrādi jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam | ābhāsamātramevetad asatsvapnamivotthitam || 3 ||

This whole world, starting with the body and covering everything still or moving, is only an appearance. It is unreal, risen up like a dream.

dīrghasvapno hyayaṃ rāma mithyai (vānagha dṛśyate | dvicandravibhramākāraṃ bhramāntarbhraṃtaśailavat || 4 ||

This long dream, Rama, sinless one, is seen only as false. It has the shape of the illusion of two moons, like a mountain that seems to whirl because of a dizziness inside the one who watches it.

praśāntājñānanidras tu nūnaṃ galitabhāvanaḥ | prabuddhacetāḥ saṃsārasvapnaṃ paśyann na paśyati || 5 ||

But one whose sleep of ignorance has truly ended, whose false imagining has melted away, whose mind has woken up, sees the dream of this world and yet does not take it as real.

svabhāvakalpito rāma jīvānāṃ sarvadaiva hi | āmokṣapadasaṃprāpti saṃsāro'styātmano'ntare || 6 ||

Rama, this cycle of birth and death is always something made up by each soul's own nature. It exists within the self only until the state of liberation is reached.

jīvasya taralaḥ kāya āvartaḥ payaso yathā | yathā bīje'ṅkuraḥ sphāraḥ pallavaḥ svāṅkure yathā || 7 ||

The body of the soul is unsteady, like a whirl in water. It is the way a sprout comes from a seed, the way a leaf spreads out from its own sprout.

pallave ca yathā puṣpaṃ puṣpakośe phalaṃ yathā | yataḥ sa kalpanārūpo deho'sti manaso'ntare || 8 ||

The way a flower comes from a shoot, the way a fruit comes from the flower's bud, in the same way this body is only a thought, existing inside the mind.

bahurūpatayā rāma yato'styekatamaḥ sphuṭaḥ | sa eva pratibhāso'sya manasaḥ kila jāyate || 9 ||

Rama, because the one single thing becomes clearly visible in many forms, that very thing becomes what appears to us as this mind.

sa evāśu bhavatyetanmṛtpinḍo ghaṭakopamaḥ | ādisarge purā kāyaḥ pratibhāso'sya cottamaḥ || 10 ||

That same mind soon turns into this body, a lump of clay shaped like a pot. Long ago, at the very start of creation, the body was its finest appearance.

yasmādeṣa vibhurbrahmā padmakośagṛhasthitaḥ | tatsaṅkalpakrameṇaiva tataḥ sthitimupāgatā || 11 ||

Because this all-pervading Brahma sits inside the house of the lotus bud, it was through the sequence of his own intention that it then came to be established.

iyam sṛṣṭiraparyantā māyeva ghanamāyayā | śrīrāma uvāca | jīvo manaḥpadaṃ prāpya vairiñcaṃ padamāgataḥ || 12 ||

This whole endless creation is like a magic show, made from a thick illusion. Sri Rama said: the soul, on reaching the level of mind, comes to the level of Brahma.

yathā brahmaṃstathā sarvaṃ vistareṇa vadāśu me | śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | brāhme śṛṇu mahābāho śarīragrahaṇe kramam || 13 ||

Since that is so, tell me the whole of it in detail, quickly. Sri Vasishtha said: listen, mighty-armed one, to the process by which a body was taken on, in the case of Brahma.

nidarśanena tenaiva jāgatīṃ jñāsyasi sthitim | dikkālādyanavacchinnamātmatattvaṃ svaśaktitḥ || 14 ||

By that same example you will come to know how the world stands, how the true nature of the self, unbound by direction or time, exists through its own power.

līlayaiva yadādatte dikkālakalitaṃ vapuḥ | tadaiva jīvaparyāyaṃ vāsanāveśatatparam || 15 ||

The very moment it takes on, just as a kind of play, a body bound by place and time, that same moment it becomes an individual soul, caught up in the pull of its own desires and habits.

manaḥ saṃpadyate lolaṃ kalanākalanonmukham | kalayantī manaḥśaktirādau bhāvayati kṣaṇāt || 16 ||

The mind turns restless, ready both to seize hold of things and to let them slip. This power of the mind, always busy shaping, first pictures something in a single instant.

ākāśabhāvanāmaccchāṃ śabdabījarasonmukhīm | tatastāṃ ghanatāṃ yātaṃ ghanaspandakramānmanaḥ || 17 ||

It first imagines a clear, empty space, leaning toward the seed of sound. Then, through a sequence of thickening vibrations, the mind makes that space grow dense.

184.44.18

bhāvayatyani laspandaṃ sparśabījarasonmukham | tābhyāmākāśavātābhyāmadṛṣṭābhyāṃ manodṛśā || 18 ||

It then imagines the movement of wind, leaning toward the seed of touch. Ether and wind are both unseen by the eye; they exist only as seen by the mind.

śabdasparśasvarūpābhyāṃ saṃghātājjanyate'nalaḥ | manastaddhanatāṃ prāpya tato bhāvayati kṣaṇāt || 19 ||

From the meeting of these two, one whose nature is sound and one whose nature is touch, fire is born. The mind, having reached that dense form of fire, then imagines something further, in an instant.

204.44.20

prākāśyamamalālokamālokastena vardhate | manastāvadguṇagataṃ rasatanmātravedanam || 20 ||

Fire brings brightness, a clear, spotless light, and by that light shines even more. The mind then moves on to another quality, sensing the subtle trace of taste.

kṣaṇārdhena tvapāṃ śaityaṃ jalasaṃvittato bhavettatastādṛgguṇagataṃ mano bhāvayati kṣaṇāt || 21 ||

In half an instant, the coolness of water appears, and from this comes the sense of water. The mind, moving into that same kind of quality, then imagines further, in an instant.

svarūpaṃ gandhavatsthūlaṃ yenodeṣyati medinīathetthaṃbhūtatanmātraveṣṭitaṃ tanutāṃ jahat || 22 ||

It then imagines a solid form with smell, and from this the earth will arise. Wrapped in this subtle trace, that form gives up its fineness and starts to thicken.

vapurvahnikaṇākāraṃ sphuritaṃ vyomni paśyatiahaṃkārakalāyuktaṃ buddhibījasamanvitam || 23 ||

It sees a body like a spark of fire, flickering in the open sky, joined with a trace of ego, and carrying within it the seed of intellect.

tatpuryaṣṭakamityuktaṃ bhūtahṛtpadmaṣaṭpadamtasmiṃstu tīvrasaṃvegādbhāvayadbhāsvaraṃ vapuḥ || 24 ||

That is called the subtle body of eight, resting like a bee on the lotus of every creature's heart. Within it, then, driven by a strong urge, the mind pictures a shining body.

sthūlatāmeti pākena mano bilvaphalaṃ yathāmūṣāsthadrutahemābhaṃ sphuritaṃ vimalāmbare || 25 ||

Through this ripening, the mind becomes thick and solid, the way a bilva fruit ripens. It shines like gold melted in a mould, glinting in the clear sky.

sanniveśamupādatte tattejaḥ svasvabhāvataḥ | tasminsvasanniveśe ca tejaḥpuñjamaye punaḥ || 26 ||

That light takes on a shape by its own nature. And again, within that very shape it has made for itself, formed out of a mass of light,

bhajate bhāvanāṃ sphārāṃ niścitāmātatāmbarām | ūrdhvaṃ śiraḥpīṭhamayīmadhaḥpādamayīṃ tathā || 27 ||

it takes on a wide and clear form spread through the sky, above the seat of a head, and below, in the same way, feet,

pārśvayorhastasaṃsthānāṃ madhye codaradharmiṇīm | prakaṭāvayavo bālo jvālāmālāmalākṛtiḥ || 28 ||

on the two sides hands, and in the middle a belly. With its limbs now formed, it becomes a child, spotless in shape, like a garland of flame.

manorathavaśopāttavapustiṣṭhatyasāvatha | evaṃ svavāsanāveśātkalitāṅgo manomuniḥ || 29 ||

That one then stands there, having taken on a body through the force of its own wishing. In this way, through the entry of its own old habits, the mind, quiet as a sage, comes to have a formed body.

nayatyupacayaṃ dehaṃ svasvabhāvamṛturyathā | kālena sphuṭatāmeti bhavatyamalavigrahaḥ || 30 ||

It carries the body toward growth by its own nature, the way a season ripens fruit. In time it becomes fully formed, and becomes a spotless body.

buddhisattvabalotsāhavijñānaiśvaryasaṃsthitaḥ | sa eva bhagavānbrahmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ || 31 ||

Full of intelligence, goodness, strength, energy, knowledge and lordship, he is the Lord Brahma himself, the grandfather of all the worlds.

dravatkanakasaṃkāśaḥ paramākāśasaṃbhavaḥ | yathāsau paramākāśe tiṣṭhatyapararūpavān || 32 ||

Shining like molten gold, born out of the highest space, he stays in that same highest space, now wearing this further form.

janayatyātmano mohamātmasthaṃ cittalīlayā | kadācitkevalaṃ vyoma paramaṃ pāravarjitam || 33 ||

Through the play of the mind, he creates within himself a delusion that belongs to himself alone. At times he is plain empty space, supreme, with no far shore at all.

anādimadhyaparyantaṃ kadācidamalaṃ payaḥ | kadācitkalpakālāgnijvālābhāsvaramaṇḍakam || 34 ||

With no beginning, middle or end, at times he is pure water. At times he is a glowing ball ablaze with the flames of the fire that ends an age.

kadācitkānanaṃ kārṣṇyaṃ kālaṃ kamalakuḍmalam | anyānyanyānyanekāni pratijanmāvadhiḥ prabhuḥ || 35 ||

Sometimes a forest, sometimes darkness, sometimes time itself, sometimes a lotus bud. Birth after birth, the lord becomes many other different things.

kalpayanpālayatyēṣa nānārūpāṇi hēlayā | tatrēdamprathamatvēna yadaiṣa brahmaṇaḥ padāt || 36 ||

He creates and looks after many forms with ease. This first happened when he, out of the very state of Brahman,

avatīrṇastadā'jñānāttathaiva sukhamasmṛtam | garbhanidrāvyapagame vapuḥ paśyati bhāsvaram || 37 ||

having then come down, and out of ignorance, he likewise simply felt an ease he had no memory of. When the sleep of the womb passed, he saw a shining body.

prāṇāpānapravāhāḍhyaṃ dravyairiva vinirmitam | romakoṭibhirākīrṇaṃ dvātriṃśaddaśanānvitam || 38 ||

A body full of the flow of the in breath and the out breath, as if built out of many materials, covered with millions of hairs, fitted with thirty two teeth.

tristhūṇaṃ pañcadaivatyamadhaścaraṇalāñchitam | pañcabhāgaṃ navadvāraṃ tvaglepamasṛṇāṅgakam || 39 ||

Standing on three supports, ruled over by five gods, marked below by feet, made of five parts, having nine doors, coated with skin, its limbs smooth.

yuktamaṅguliviṃśatyā nakhaviṃśatilāñchitam | dvibāhuṃ dvistanam dvyakṣaṃ bahvakṣibhujameva ca || 40 ||

Fitted with twenty fingers and toes, marked with twenty nails, two armed, two chested, two eyed, and yet at the same time having countless eyes and arms too.
