Sthiti, Chapter 25स्थिति प्रकरण · सर्ग २५

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । अस्मिन्विहरतो लोके लोकारामस्य धीमतः । श्रेयसे तिष्ठतो यत्नमुत्तमार्थाभिधायिनः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asminviharato loke lokārāmasya dhīmataḥ | śreyase tiṣṭhato yatnamuttamārthābhidhāyinaḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: you move through this world and give it joy. You are wise, you stand for what is good, and even your effort speaks of the highest truth.

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: तुम इस संसार में घूमते हो और इसे आनंद देते हो। तुम बुद्धिमान हो, भलाई के लिए डटे रहते हो, और तुम्हारा प्रयास भी सबसे बड़े सत्य की बात करता है।

दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भवतु राघव । भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च ॥ २ ॥

dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhavatu rāghava | bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca || 2 ||

Raghava, do not let the old story of Dama, Vyala and Kata apply to you. Even inside something that looks terrible, stay firm and steady, and be free of sorrow.

हे राघव, दाम, व्याल और कट की वह पुरानी कहानी तुम पर लागू न हो। डरावनी दिखने वाली चीज़ के भीतर भी दृढ़ और स्थिर रहो, और दुख से मुक्त हो जाओ।

श्रीराम उवाच । दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भूदित्युदाहृतम् । ब्रह्मन् किमेतद्भवता भवतापापहारिणा ॥ ३ ॥

śrīrāma uvāca | dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhūdityudāhṛtam | brahman kimetadbhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā || 3 ||

Rama said: you told me, do not let the story of Dama, Vyala and Kata apply to you. Brahmin, you who take away the pain of this world, what do you mean by this?

राम ने कहा: आपने कहा था कि दाम, व्याल और कट की कहानी तुम पर लागू न हो। हे ब्राह्मण, आप जो संसार का दुख दूर करने वाले हैं, इसका क्या मतलब है?

भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च । प्रभो किमुक्तं भवता भवतापापहारिणा ॥ ४ ॥

bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca | prabho kimuktaṃ bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā || 4 ||

And you said, stay firm and steady inside something that looks terrible, and be free of sorrow. Lord, you who take away the pain of this world, what have you told me?

और आपने कहा कि डरावनी दिखने वाली चीज़ के भीतर दृढ़ और स्थिर रहो, और दुख से मुक्त हो जाओ। हे प्रभु, आप जो संसार का दुख दूर करने वाले हैं, आपने यह क्या कहा है?

उदारयैतया शुद्धं संप्रबोधय मां गिरा । घनस्तापापहारिण्या प्रावृषीव कलापिनम् ॥ ५ ॥

udārayaitayā śuddhaṃ saṃprabodhaya māṃ girā | ghanastāpāpahāriṇyā prāvṛṣīva kalāpinam || 5 ||

Wake me up clearly with this generous speech of yours, a speech that removes burning heat the way a monsoon cloud does, just as a monsoon cloud wakes up a peacock.

अपने इस उदार वचन से मुझे साफ़-साफ़ जगा दीजिए, यह वचन उस बादल की तरह जलन को दूर कर देता है, जैसे वर्षा का बादल मोर को जगा देता है।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । दामव्यालकटन्यायं भीमभासदृढस्थितिम् । श्रृणु राघव तच्छ्रुत्वा यदिष्टं तत्समाचर ॥ ६ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dāmavyālakaṭanyāyaṃ bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthitim | śṛṇu rāghava tacchrutvā yadiṣṭaṃ tatsamācara || 6 ||

Vasishtha said: Raghava, listen to the story of Dama, Vyala and Kata, and to what it means to stay firm inside something that looks terrible. After you hear it, do as you think best.

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे राघव, दाम, व्याल और कट की कहानी सुनो, और यह भी सुनो कि डरावनी चीज़ के भीतर दृढ़ रहने का क्या मतलब है। इसे सुनने के बाद, जो तुम्हें ठीक लगे वही करना।

आसीत्पातालकुहरे सर्वाश्चर्यमनोरमे । शम्बरो नाम दैत्येन्द्रो मायामणिमहार्णवः ॥ ७ ॥

āsītpātālakuhare sarvāścaryamanorame | śambaro nāma daityendro māyāmaṇimahārṇavaḥ || 7 ||

In a cave in the underworld, delightful with every kind of wonder, there lived a lord of the demons named Shambara, a man who was like a vast ocean of magic and jewels.

पाताल की एक गुफा में, जो हर तरह के अचरज से भरी और मनमोहक थी, शम्बर नाम का एक दैत्यराज रहता था। वह मानो माया और रत्नों का एक विशाल सागर था।

आकाशनगरोद्यानरचितासुरमन्दिरः । कुत्रिमोत्तमचन्द्रार्कभूषितात्मीयमण्डलः ॥ ८ ॥

ākāśanagarodyānaracitāsuramandiraḥ | kutrimottamacandrārkabhūṣitātmīyamaṇḍalaḥ || 8 ||

His demon palace was built like the garden of a city floating in the sky, and his own realm was decorated with fine artificial moons and suns.

उसका दानव-महल आकाश में तैरते किसी नगर के बगीचे जैसा बनाया गया था, और उसका अपना इलाका सुंदर नकली चाँद और सूरजों से सजाया गया था।

शिलाशकलसंभूतपद्माद्यैरमराचलः । अनन्तविभवारम्भपरिपूरितदानवः ॥ ९ ॥

śilāśakalasaṃbhūtapadmādyairamarācalaḥ | anantavibhavārambhaparipūritadānavaḥ || 9 ||

Pieces of rock were carved into lotuses and other flowers, so his home rivaled the mountain of the gods. The demon king was full of endless wealth and endless new projects.

पत्थर के टुकड़ों को तराश कर कमल और दूसरे फूल बनाए गए थे, जिससे उसका घर देवताओं के पर्वत जैसा लगता था। वह दानव-राजा अनगिनत धन और अनगिनत नई योजनाओं से भरा हुआ था।

गृहरत्नाङ्गनागेयजितामरवधूध्वनिः । चन्द्रबिम्बकलापूर्णक्रीडोपवनपादपः ॥ १० ॥

gṛharatnāṅganāgeyajitāmaravadhūdhvaniḥ | candrabimbakalāpūrṇakrīḍopavanapādapaḥ || 10 ||

In his house, the singing of jewel-bright women beat the singing of the wives of the gods. In his pleasure garden, the trees shone as full as the moon in every one of its phases.

उसके घर में रत्नों जैसी चमकीली स्त्रियों का गायन देवताओं की पत्नियों के गायन से भी बढ़कर था। उसके विहार-उद्यान के वृक्ष चाँद की हर कला की तरह पूरी चमक से भरे रहते थे।

फुल्लनीलोत्पलव्यूहकरालरमणालयः । रत्नहंसध्वनाहूतहेमाम्बुरुहसारसः ॥ ११ ॥

phullanīlotpalavyūhakarālarmaṇālayaḥ | ratnahansadhvanāhūtahemāmburuhasārasaḥ || 11 ||

His pleasure ground was thick and striking with masses of blooming blue lotuses. The calls of jewelled swans drew in the cranes that sat among the golden lotuses.

उसका विहार-स्थल खिले हुए नीले कमलों के ढेरों से घना और शानदार था। रत्नों से बने हंसों की आवाज़ सुनहरे कमलों के बीच बैठे सारसों को खींच लाती थी।

हेमपादपशाखाग्रकृताम्भोरुहकुड्मलः । करञ्जजालप्रपतन्मन्दारकुसुमाकरः ॥ १२ ॥

hemāpādapashākhāgrakṛtāmbhoruhakuḍmalaḥ | karañjajālaprapatanmandārakusumākaraḥ || 12 ||

The tips of the golden trees' branches formed buds shaped like lotuses. From the thick tangle of karanja trees fell mandara flowers without end, like an endless spring of blossoms.

सुनहरे वृक्षों की शाखाओं के सिरे कमल की कलियों जैसे बने थे। करंज के पेड़ों के घने जाल से मंदार के फूल लगातार झरते रहते थे, मानो फूलों का कोई खत्म न होने वाला सोता हो।

तर्कुयन्त्रमयानन्तदैत्यनिर्जितवासवः । हिमशीतानलज्वालानिर्मितोद्यानमण्डपः ॥ १३ ॥

tarkuyantramayānantadaityanirjitavāsavaḥ | himaśītānalajvālānirmiudyānamanḍapaḥ || 13 ||

Using spinning machines, he made countless mechanical demons that conquered Indra. His garden pavilions were built from flames of fire that were cold as ice.

घूमने वाले यंत्रों से उसने अनगिनत यांत्रिक दानव बनाए, जिन्होंने इंद्र को भी हरा दिया। उसके बगीचे के मंडप बर्फ जैसी ठंडी आग की लपटों से बनाए गए थे।

सर्वत्र कुसुमोद्यानजितानन्दननन्दनः । मायासर्वहृतव्यालमलयाचलचन्दनः ॥ १४ ॥

sarvatra kusumodyānajitānandananandaḥ | māyāsarvahṛtavyālamalayācalacandanaḥ || 14 ||

Everywhere, his flower gardens gave more delight than Indra's garden, Nandana. By his magic he brought sandalwood from Mount Malaya with every single snake taken out of it.

हर जगह उसके फूलों के बगीचे इंद्र के नंदन वन से भी ज़्यादा आनंद देते थे। अपनी माया से उसने मलय पर्वत का चंदन मंगवाया था, जिसमें से हर साँप निकाल दिया गया था।

हेमश्रीलोकलावण्यनिर्जितान्तःपुराङ्गनः । नानाकुसुमसंभारजानुदघ्नगृहाङ्गणः ॥ १५ ॥

hemaśrīlokalāvaṇyanirjitāntaḥpurāṅganaḥ | nānākusumasambhārajānudaghnaagṛhāṅgaṇaḥ || 15 ||

The women of his inner chambers were more beautiful than the loveliest women of the golden heavens. His courtyards lay knee-deep in heaps of every kind of flower.

उसके अंतःपुर की स्त्रियाँ सुंदरता में स्वर्ण-लोक की सबसे सुंदर स्त्रियों को भी मात देती थीं। उसके आँगन तरह-तरह के फूलों के ढेर से घुटनों तक भरे रहते थे।

क्रीडार्थमृन्मयेशानजितचक्रगदाधरः । अजस्रोड्डीनरत्नौघताराढ्यखपुरान्तरः ॥ १६ ॥

krīḍārthamṛnmayeśānajitacakragadādharaḥ | ajasroḍḍīnaratnaughatārāḍhyakha-purāntaraḥ || 16 ||

For his own amusement he kept clay figures of Shiva that, in play, defeated Vishnu, the god who carries the discus and the mace. Inside his sky palace, jewels flew about without stopping, like stars filling it with light.

अपने मनोरंजन के लिए उसके पास शिव की मिट्टी की मूर्तियाँ थीं, जो खेल-खेल में चक्र और गदा धारण करने वाले विष्णु को भी हरा देती थीं। उसके आकाश-महल के भीतर रत्न बिना रुके तारों की तरह उड़ते रहते थे और उसे रोशन करते रहते थे।

निशीथाखिलपातालशतचन्द्रनभस्तलः । स्वशालभञ्जिकालोकगीतगीतिरणोत्कटः ॥ १७ ॥

niśīthākhilapātālaśatacandranabhastalaḥ | svaśālabhañjikālokagītagītiraṇotkaṭaḥ || 17 ||

At midnight, the whole sky over the underworld shone as if filled with a hundred moons. Loud singing rang out as people looked at his lifelike carved statues.

आधी रात को पाताल के पूरे आकाश में मानो सौ चाँद जैसी चमक भर जाती थी। उसकी जीवंत लगने वाली नक्काशीदार मूर्तियों को देखकर लोग ज़ोर-ज़ोर से गीत गाते थे।

मायैरावणनागेन्द्रविद्रुतामरवारणः । त्रैलोक्यविभवोत्कर्षपूरितान्तःपुरान्तरः ॥ १८ ॥

māyairāvaṇanāgendravidrutāmaravāraṇaḥ | trailokyavibhavotkarṣapūritāntaḥpurāntaraḥ || 18 ||

With a magic elephant made to look like Airavata, the king of elephants, he drove away the elephants of the gods. The inside of his inner chambers was filled with the finest wealth of all three worlds.

उसने ऐरावत जैसा दिखने वाला एक मायावी हाथी बनाकर देवताओं के हाथियों को भगा दिया था। उसके अंतःपुर के भीतरी हिस्से तीनों लोकों के सबसे बढ़िया धन-वैभव से भरे हुए थे।

सर्वसंपत्तिसुभगः सर्वैश्वर्यनमस्कृतः । समस्तदैत्यसामन्तवन्दितोग्रानुशासनः ॥ १९ ॥

sarvasaṃpattisubhagaḥ sarvaiśvaryanamaskṛtaḥ | samastadaityasāmantavanditogrānuśāsanaḥ || 19 ||

He was blessed with every kind of wealth, and every kind of power bowed down to him. All the demon chiefs under him praised his harsh rule.

वह हर तरह के धन-वैभव से धन्य था, और हर तरह की शक्ति उसके आगे झुकती थी। उसके अधीन सभी दानव-सरदार उसके कठोर शासन की प्रशंसा करते थे।

महाभुजवनच्छायाविश्रान्तासुरमण्डलः । सर्वबुद्धिगणाधाररत्नमण्डलमण्डितः ॥ २० ॥

mahābhujavanaśchāyāviśrāntāsuramaṇḍalaḥ | sarvabuddhigaṇādhāraratnamaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ || 20 ||

His whole army of demons rested under his huge arms as if resting in the shade of a forest. He wore a ring of jewels that people said was the very source of all wisdom.

उसकी विशाल भुजाओं के नीचे उसकी पूरी दानव-सेना ऐसे विश्राम करती थी जैसे किसी जंगल की छाया में। वह रत्नों की एक ऐसी माला पहनता था जिसे लोग समस्त बुद्धि का मूल स्रोत मानते थे।

तस्योत्सादितदेवस्य कठिनोड्डामराकृतेः । बभूव विपुलं सैन्यमासुरं सुरनाशनम् ॥ २१ ॥

tasyotsāditadevasya kaṭhinoḍḍāmarākṛteḥ | babhūva vipulaṃ sainyamāsuraṃ suranāśanam || 21 ||

Shambara had already crushed the gods, and his body was hard and fierce. Now he raised a vast demon army built to destroy the gods.

शम्बर पहले ही देवताओं को कुचल चुका था, और उसका शरीर कठोर और भयंकर था। अब उसने देवताओं को नष्ट करने के लिए एक विशाल दानव-सेना खड़ी कर दी।

तस्मिन्मायाबले सुप्ते देशान्तरगते तथा । तत्सैन्यं तरसा जघ्नुश्छिद्रं प्राप्य किलामराः ॥ २२ ॥

tasminmāyābale supte deśāntaragate tathā | tatsainyaṃ tarasā jaghnuśchidraṃ prāpya kilāmarāḥ || 22 ||

While that magic army was asleep, and part of it had gone off to other lands, the gods found their chance and struck that army down at once.

जब वह मायावी सेना सोई हुई थी, और उसका कुछ हिस्सा दूसरे प्रदेशों में गया हुआ था, तब देवताओं ने मौका पाकर तुरंत उस सेना पर वार कर दिया।

अथ शम्बरदैत्येन मुण्डिक्रोधद्रुमादयः । रक्षार्थमथ सामन्ताः स्वसेनासु नियोजिताः ॥ २३ ॥

atha śambaradaityena muṇḍikrodhadrumādayaḥ | rakṣārthamatha sāmantāḥ svasenāsu niyojitāḥ || 23 ||

Then the demon Shambara put commanders named Mundi, Krodha, Druma, and others in charge, to protect his armies.

फिर असुर शम्बर ने मुंडि, क्रोध, द्रुम और दूसरे सेनापतियों को अपनी सेनाओं की रक्षा के लिए नियुक्त किया।

तानप्यन्तरमासाद्य जघ्नुर्देवा भयानकाः । व्योमान्तरगताः श्येनाः कलविङ्कानिवाकुलान् ॥ २४ ॥

tānapyantaramāsādya jaghnurdevā bhayānakāḥ | vyomāntaragatāḥ śyenāḥ kalaviṅkānivākulān || 24 ||

But the terrifying gods found a gap in them too and struck them down, the way hawks flying high in the sky strike frightened sparrows.

पर डरावने देवताओं ने उनमें भी एक कमज़ोर जगह ढूंढ ली और उन्हें मार गिराया, जैसे आकाश में ऊँचा उड़ते बाज़ डरी हुई गौरैयों को मार डालते हैं।

सेनापतीन्पुनश्चान्यांश्चकारासुरसत्तमः । चपलानुद्भटारावांस्तरङ्गानिव सागरः ॥ २५ ॥

senāpatīnpunaścānyāṃścakārāsurasattamaḥ | capalānudbhataārāvāṃstarangāniva sāgaraḥ || 25 ||

So the great demon made new commanders again, restless and roaring fiercely, the way the ocean keeps making new waves.

तब उस महान असुर ने फिर से नए सेनापति बनाए, जो बेचैन थे और ज़ोर से गरज रहे थे, जैसे समुद्र बार-बार नई लहरें बनाता है।

देवास्तानपु तस्याशु जघ्नुस्तेन स कोपवान्। जगामामरनाशाय परिपूर्णे त्रिविष्टपम् ॥ २६ ॥

devāstānapu tasyāśu jaghnustena sa kopavān| jagāmāmaranāśāya paripūrṇe triviṣṭapam || 26 ||

The gods quickly struck down these new commanders as well. This made Shambara furious, and full of rage he went to heaven, determined to wipe out the gods completely.

देवताओं ने इन नए सेनापतियों को भी जल्दी ही मार गिराया। इससे शम्बर बहुत क्रोधित हो गया, और गुस्से से भरकर वह देवताओं को पूरी तरह मिटाने की ठान कर स्वर्ग की ओर चल पड़ा।

तस्मात्तन्माययाभीताः सुरास्तेऽन्तर्धिमाययुः। मेरुकाननकुञ्जेषु मृगा गौरीहरेरिव ॥ २७ ॥

tasmāttanmāyayābhītāḥ surāste'ntardhimāyayuḥ| merukānanakuñjeṣu mṛgā gaurīhareriva || 27 ||

So the gods, afraid of his magic power, hid themselves completely, the way deer hide in the thickets of Mount Meru's forest from Gauri's lion.

इसलिए देवता उसकी माया से डरकर पूरी तरह छिप गए, जैसे मेरु पर्वत के जंगल की झाड़ियों में हिरण गौरी के शेर से डरकर छिप जाते हैं।

क्रन्दत्क्षुद्रामरगणं वाष्पक्लिन्नाप्सरोमुखम्। शून्यं ददर्श स स्वर्गं कल्पक्षीणजगत्समम् ॥ २८ ॥

krandatkṣudrāmaragaṇaṃ vāṣpaklinnāpsaromukham| śūnyaṃ dadarśa sa svargaṃ kalpakṣīṇajagatsamam || 28 ||

There he saw heaven empty, the lesser gods crying, the faces of the heavenly nymphs wet with tears, like the whole world when it is destroyed at the end of an age.

वहाँ उसने स्वर्ग को खाली देखा, छोटे-मोटे देवता रो रहे थे, अप्सराओं के चेहरे आँसुओं से भीगे थे, जैसे पूरी दुनिया किसी युग के अंत में नष्ट हो जाती है।

विहरन्कुपितस्तत्र लब्धमाहृत्य सुन्दरम्। लोकपालपुरीं दग्ध्वा जगामात्मीयमालयम् ॥ २९ ॥

viharan kupitastatra labdhamāhṛtya sundaram| lokapālapurīṃ dagdhvā jagāmātmīyamālayam || 29 ||

Wandering there in his anger, he grabbed whatever beautiful things he found, burned down the city of the guardians of the world, and went back to his own home.

वहाँ अपने गुस्से में घूमते हुए उसने जो भी सुंदर चीज़ मिली उठा ली, लोकपालों के नगर को जला दिया, और अपने घर लौट गया।

एवं दृढतरीभूते द्वेषे दानवदेवयोः। देवाः स्वर्गं परित्यज्य दिक्षु जग्मुरदर्शनम् ॥ ३० ॥

evaṃ dṛḍhatarībhūte dveṣe dānavadevayoḥ| devāḥ svargaṃ parityajya dikṣu jagmuradarśanam || 30 ||

So the hatred between the demons and the gods grew even stronger. The gods left heaven and disappeared in every direction.

इस तरह असुरों और देवताओं के बीच की दुश्मनी और गहरी हो गई। देवता स्वर्ग छोड़कर हर दिशा में गायब हो गए।

अथ शम्बरदैत्येन ये ये सेनाधिनायकाः। क्रियन्ते यत्नतस्तांस्तु जघ्नुर्यत्नपराः सुराः ॥ ३१ ॥

atha śambaradaityena ye ye senādhināyakāḥ| kriyante yatnatastāṃstu jaghnuryatnaparāḥ surāḥ || 31 ||

Then, however carefully the demon Shambara appointed new army commanders, the gods worked just as hard and struck them down too.

फिर असुर शम्बर ने चाहे जितनी मेहनत से नए सेनापति बनाए, देवताओं ने भी उतनी ही मेहनत से उन्हें मार गिराया।

यावदुद्बेगमायातः शम्बरः कोपवान्भृशम्। तार्णोऽतिमात्रमनल इव जज्वाल सोच्छ्वसन् ॥ ३२ ॥

yāvadudbegamāyātaḥ śambaraḥ kopavānbhṛśam| tārṇo’timātramanala iva jajvāla socchvasan || 32 ||

As Shambara grew more and more agitated with rage, he blazed up like a fire in dry grass, breathing hard.

शम्बर गुस्से में और बेचैन होता गया, और सूखी घास की आग की तरह भड़क उठा, ज़ोर-ज़ोर से साँस लेते हुए।

त्रैलोक्यमपि चान्विष्यन्न देवाँल्लब्धवानथ। परेणापि प्रयत्नेन निधानमिव दुष्कृती ॥ ३३ ॥

trailokyamapi cānviṣyann na devāllabdhavānatha| pareṇāpi prayatnena nidhānamiva duṣkṛtī || 33 ||

He searched through all three worlds for the gods, but however hard he tried he could not find them, like a wicked man digging for buried treasure and finding nothing.

उसने तीनों लोकों में देवताओं को खोजा, पर पूरी कोशिश के बाद भी वे नहीं मिले, जैसे कोई पापी आदमी गड़ा हुआ खज़ाना खोजता रहे और न पाए।

ससर्ज मायया घोरानसुरांस्त्रीन्महाबलान्। बलरक्षार्थमुदितान्कालान्मूर्तिमिव स्थितान् ॥ ३४ ॥

sasarja māyayā ghorānasurāṃstrīnmahābalān| balarakṣārthamuditānkālānmūrtimiva sthitān || 34 ||

So by his magic power he created three terrible, immensely powerful demons to guard his army, standing there like Death itself given a body.

तब उसने अपनी माया से तीन भयानक और बेहद ताकतवर असुर बनाए, अपनी सेना की रक्षा के लिए, जो साक्षात मृत्यु जैसे खड़े थे।

निर्वृत्ता मायया भीमा बलपादपवाहिनः। उदगुस्ते महामायाः पक्षक्षुब्धा इवाद्रयः ॥ ३५ ॥

nirvṛttā māyayā bhīmā balapādapavāhinaḥ| udaguḥste mahāmāyāḥ pakṣakṣubdhā ivādrayaḥ || 35 ||

Fearsome, born of his magic power, strong, carrying trees as clubs, these mighty demons rose up, like mountains shaking on their wings.

माया से जन्मे ये डरावने और ताकतवर असुर पेड़ों को हथियार की तरह उठाए हुए उठ खड़े हुए, जैसे पहाड़ अपने पंखों से हिल उठें।

दामो व्यालः कटश्चेति नामभिः परिलाञ्छिताः । यथाप्राप्तैककर्तारश्चेतनामात्रधर्मिणः ॥ ३६ ॥

dāmo vyālaḥ kaṭaśceti nāmabhiḥ parilāñchitāḥ | yathāprāptaikakartāraścetanāmātradharminḥ || 36 ||

They were named Dama, Vyala, and Kata. Each of them simply did whatever single task came before him, with nothing but bare awareness as his nature.

उनके नाम दाम, व्याल और कट थे। हर एक बस वही एक काम करता था जो उसके सामने आ जाता, और उसका पूरा स्वभाव बस एक सीधी चेतना भर था।

अभावात्कर्मणां ते च प्राक्तना नच वासनाः । निर्विकल्पकचिन्मात्रपरिस्पन्दैकधर्मकाः ॥ ३७ ॥

abhāvātkarmaṇāṃ te ca prāktanā na ca vāsanāḥ | nirvikalpakacinmātraparispandaiakadharmakāḥ || 37 ||

They had no past deeds behind them, and no old habits or leanings either. The only thing about them was a plain stir of awareness, with no thought added to it.

उनके पीछे न कोई पुराना कर्म था, न कोई पुरानी आदत या इच्छा। उनमें बस चेतना की एक सीधी हलचल भर थी, बिना किसी विचार के।

कर्मजीवकलां तन्वीमसारां च मनोभिदाम् । अपुष्टां कृत्रिमामन्तश्चोदयोदयमागताः ॥ ३८ ॥

karmajīvakalāṃ tanvīmasārāṃ ca manobhidām | apuṣṭāṃ kṛtrimāmantaścodayodayamāgatāḥ || 38 ||

They arose from nothing but a passing inner urge. What made each of them feel like a living person doing something was thin, without substance, undeveloped, and false, just a ripple in the mind, nothing more.

वे बस एक पल के भीतरी आवेग से पैदा हुए थे। उनमें जो 'मैं कुछ कर रहा हूँ' जैसा भाव था, वह पतला, बेदम, अधूरा और नकली था, बस मन की एक हल्की लहर, इससे ज़्यादा कुछ नहीं।

ते ह्यन्धपारम्पर्येण काकतालीयवद्भटाः प्रकृतामनुवर्तन्ते क्रियामुज्झितवासनाः ॥ ३९ ॥

te hyandhapāramparyeṇa kākatālīyavadbhaṭāḥ prakṛtāmanuvartante kriyāmujjhitavāsanāḥ || 39 ||

So these fighters, with no inner habits left in them at all, simply did whatever action came up next, blindly, one thing after another, like a crow landing on a branch at the very moment a palm fruit happens to fall.

इसलिए ये योद्धा, जिनमें कोई पुरानी आदत बची ही नहीं थी, बस अंधाधुंध जो भी काम सामने आता वही करते चले जाते थे, जैसे कौआ किसी डाल पर बैठे और ठीक उसी पल ताड़ का फल गिर पड़े।

अर्धसुप्ता यथा बालाः स्वाङ्गै रिङ्गन्ति केवलम् । वासनात्माभिमानाभ्यां हीनास्ते तद्वदेव हि ॥ ४० ॥

ardhasuptā yathā bālāḥ svāṅgai riṅganti kevalam | vāsanātmābhimānābhyāṃ hīnāste tadvadeva hi || 40 ||

The way a half-asleep baby simply moves its own arms and legs without knowing it, these demons moved in exactly the same way, with no old habits and no sense of I at all.

जैसे आधा सोया हुआ बच्चा बिना जाने अपने हाथ-पैर यूँ ही हिलाता रहता है, ये असुर भी बिल्कुल वैसे ही चलते-फिरते थे, बिना किसी पुरानी आदत के और बिना यह एहसास हुए कि मैं कुछ हूँ।

नाभिपातं न चापातं न विदुस्ते पलायनम् न जीवितं न मरणं न रणं न जयाजयौ ॥ ४१ ॥

nābhipātaṃ na cāpātaṃ na viduste palāyanam na jīvitaṃ na maraṇaṃ na raṇaṃ na jayājayau || 41 ||

They knew nothing of attacking, nothing of the enemy closing in, nothing of running away, nothing of being alive, nothing of dying, nothing of the fight itself, nothing of winning or losing.

उन्हें न हमला करना आता था, न दुश्मन के पास आने का पता चलता था, न भागना आता था, न जीना, न मरना, न लड़ाई का ही पता था, न हार-जीत का।

केवलं सैनिकानग्रे दृष्टानाहननोद्यतान् अभिजग्मुः परानाजौ प्रहारदलिताद्रयः ॥ ४२ ॥

kevalaṃ sainikānagre dṛṣṭānāhananodyatān abhijagmuḥ parānājau prahāradalitādrayaḥ || 42 ||

They simply went straight at whatever enemy soldiers stood in front of them ready to strike, these were demons strong enough to shatter mountains with a single blow.

वे बस जो भी दुश्मन सैनिक सामने वार करने को तैयार दिखते, सीधे उन पर टूट पड़ते थे, ये असुर एक ही वार में पहाड़ तोड़ सकते थे।

शम्बरश्चिन्तयामास परितुष्टमनाः परम् विजेष्यते हि मे सेना मायासुरसुरक्षिता ॥ ४३ ॥

śambaraścintayāmāsa parituṣṭamanāḥ param vijeṣyate hi me senā māyāsurasurakṣitā || 43 ||

Shambara thought to himself, very pleased: my army is guarded by these magic-born demons, it is sure to win now.

शम्बर बहुत खुश होकर सोचने लगा, मेरी सेना अब इन माया से बने असुरों की रक्षा में है, यह ज़रूर जीतेगी।

अतिबलासुरदोर्द्रुमपालिता मम चमूः स्थिरतामलमेष्यति अमरवारणदन्तविघट्टनेष्वमरपर्वतहेमशिला यथा ॥ ४४ ॥

atibalāsuradorumapālitā mama camūḥ sthiratāmalameṣyati amaravāraṇadantavighaṭṭaneṣvamaraparvatahemaśilā yathā || 44 ||

My army is protected by the tree-trunk-thick arms of these immensely strong demons. It will stand completely firm against the clashing tusks of the gods' elephants, like a golden rock of the gods' own mountain.

मेरी सेना इन बेहद ताकतवर असुरों की पेड़ जैसी मोटी भुजाओं से सुरक्षित है। यह देवताओं के हाथियों के दाँतों की टक्कर में भी पूरी तरह अडिग रहेगी, जैसे देवताओं के अपने पर्वत की सोने की चट्टान।
