Vasishtha said, O mighty armed Raghunatha, listen, I will tell you everything. That great forest is not far away, Rama, and those men are not far either.
This forest can only be found by the light of clear seeing. When it is seen as one single thing, complete in itself, joined with nothing else, then it stands there alone, just that one thing.
I am the one who sees them, the one with the power to tell right from wrong, O wise one. Through that power I have seen them as something other than they appear, O sinless one.
By me alone, through the power to tell right from wrong, those minds are woken up again and again, by an ever shining light, like lotuses woken by the sun.
Those foolish men who push me away from their intellect and mind, those minds, not knowing the true self, have pushed away their own power to tell right from wrong.
For one whose power to tell right from wrong is only half attained, who has not reached the pure state, when the mind gives up its pleasures, great burning pain arises.
ardhaprāptavivekasya na prāptasyāmalam padam | cetasastyajato'ṅgāni paritāpo hi vardhate || 25 ||
For someone whose understanding is only half grown, who has not yet reached the pure state, when his mind lets go of the body, his pain only grows greater.
But when a man laughs with real joy, out of true awakened understanding, that laughter, Rama, is nothing but the contentment of a mind that has fully gained understanding.
pariprāptavivekasya tyaktasaṃsārasaṃsthiteḥ | cetasastyajato rūpamānando hi vivardhate || 27 ||
For someone who has fully gained understanding, who has given up living caught in the world, when his mind lets go of its own form, his joy only grows greater.
The mind that has gained understanding, resting in that wide open state, laughs as it looks from far away at the ground of its old, wretched condition.
saṃkalpavāsanājālaiḥ svayamāyāti bandhanam| mano lālāmayairjālaiḥ kośakārakṛmiryathā || 39 ||
With nets woven out of its own wishes and desires, the mind walks into its own bondage, just as a silkworm binds itself with threads made from its own spit.
By nursing a thing for a long time, and by dwelling on it for a long time, through sheer practice it becomes trivial, and then one grieves over it no more.
yāvajjīvamanindyayā ca ramate śāstrārthasaṃjātayā tulyaṃ vāsanayā mano hi munivanmaunena rāgādiṣu | paścātpāvanapāvanaṃ padamajaṃ tatprāpya tacchītalaṃ tatsaṃsthena na śocyate punaralaṃ puṃsā mahāpatsvapi || 44 ||
As long as he lives, let his mind take pleasure only in the blameless disposition born from the true meaning of the scriptures, staying silent and unmoved, like a sage, equally toward passion and the rest. Afterward, having reached that unborn state, the purifier of purifiers, cool and peaceful, a man established in it grieves no more, even in the midst of the greatest calamities.
