13.17.1

deśāddeśāntaraprāptau saṃvido madhyameva yatnimiṣeṇa cidākāśaṃ tadviddhi varavarṇini || 1 ||

When awareness moves in an instant from one place to another place, know that the very middle point of that awareness, in the wink of an eye, is the space of consciousness, O fair one.

puṣpāṇi mlānimeṣyanti no nacaiṣa vinaṅkṣyatibhūyaśca tava bhartṛtvamacireṇa kariṣyati || 2 ||

The flowers will not wilt, and he will not perish; soon he will again become your husband.

etadīyaśca jīvo'sāvākāśaviśadastavana nirgamiṣyati kṣipramito'ntaḥpuramaṇḍapāt || 3 ||

And his life-force, clear as space, will not quickly leave this hall of the inner chambers, which belongs to you.

ṣaṭpadaśreṇinayanā samākarṇyeti bandhubhiḥsā samāśvāsitāgatya payobhiriva padminī || 4 ||

Her eyes were like a row of bees. Hearing this from her kin, she was comforted, and came back to herself like a lotus plant revived by water.

patiṃ saṃsthāpya tatraiva puṣpapūrapragopitamkiṃcidāśvāsitā'tiṣṭhaddaridreva nidhāninī || 5 ||

Having kept her husband right there, hidden under a heap of flowers, she was somewhat comforted, and stayed like a poor woman who secretly has a hidden treasure.

tasminneva dine saiṣā tasmiñchuddhāntamaṇḍape | ardharātre parijane sarvasminnidrayā hṛte || 6 ||

On that same day, in that same hall of the inner chambers, at midnight, when all her attendants were overcome by sleep,

jñaptiṃ bhagavatīṃ devīṃ śuddhadhyānamahādhiyā | duḥkhādāhvāyayāmāsa sovāca samupetya tām || 7 ||

out of her sorrow, she called upon the goddess Jnapti, the divine goddess of pure awareness, through deep, pure meditation. The goddess came near and said to her,

kiṃ smṛtāsmi tvayā vatse dhatse kimiti śokitām | saṃsārabhrāntayo bhānti mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvattadhā || 8 ||

Why have you remembered me, child? Why do you feel such grief? The confusions of worldly life appear this way, like the water of a mirage.

līlovāca | kva mamāvasthito bhartā kiṃ karotyatha kīdṛśaḥ | samīpaṃ naya māṃ tasya naikā śaknomi jīvitum || 9 ||

Lila said, where is my husband, what is he doing, and how is he? Take me near him. I cannot live alone without him.

śrīdevyuvāca | cittākāśaṃ cidākāśamākāśaṃ ca tṛtīyakam | dvābhyāṃ śūnyataraṃ viddhi cidākāśaṃ varānane || 10 ||

The goddess said, there is the space of the mind, the space of consciousness, and third, ordinary space. Know that the space of consciousness is emptier than the other two, O lovely-faced one.

113.17.11

taccidākāśakośātma cidākāśaikabhāvanāt | avidyamānamapyāśu dṛśyate'thānubhūyate || 11 ||

That space, whose true nature is the very shell of the space of consciousness, though it does not exist as an ordinary object, is quickly seen and then experienced through single-minded absorption in the space of consciousness alone.

123.17.12

deśādadeśāntaraprātausamvidomadhyamevayat‌ | nimiṣeṇacidākāśaṃtahiddhivaravarṇini || 12 ||

When awareness moves in an instant from one place to another place, know that very thing, the middle point of that awareness, in the wink of an eye, to be the space of consciousness, O fair one.

tasminnirastaniḥśeṣasaṃkalpā sthitimeṣi cet | sarvātmakaṃ padaṃ tattvaṃ tvaṃ tadāpnoṣyasaṃśayam || 13 ||

If you reach a state there where every single thought-construct is cast away, then you will attain, without doubt, that truth which is the very self of everything.

atyantābhāvasaṃpattayā jagataścaitadāpyate | nānyathā madvareṇāśu tvaṃ tu prāpsyasi sundari || 14 ||

This is attained only through the complete cessation of the world, not otherwise. But by my boon, O beautiful one, you will attain it quickly.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktvā sā yayau devī divyamātmīyamāspadam | līlā tu līlayaivāsīnnirvikalpasamādhibhāk || 15 ||

Vasishtha said, having said this, the goddess went to her own divine abode. And Lila, as if in play, remained absorbed in thought-free meditation.

tattatyāja nimeṣeṇa sāntaḥkaraṇapañjaram | svadehaṃ khamivouḍḍīnā muktanīḍā vihaṅgamī || 16 ||

In an instant she cast off the cage of her mind, and her own body too, like a bird that is freed from its nest and flies up into the sky.

dadarśa khasthā bhartāraṃ tasminevālayāmbare | saṃsthitaṃ pṛthivīpālamāsthāne bahurājani || 17 ||

Standing in the sky, she saw her husband, established as the ruler of the earth, in that very palace hall, in an assembly crowded with many kings.

siṃhāsane samārūḍhaṃ jayajīveti saṃstutam | prastutaṃ maṇḍalānīkakāryamāhartumādṛtam || 18 ||

He was seated on the lion-throne, praised with shouts of victory and long life, honored and engaged in the business of the armies of his provinces.

193.17.19

patākāmañjarīkīrṇarājadhānīgṛhasthitam | pūrvadvārasthitāsaṅkhyamuniviprarṣimaṇḍalam || 19 ||

The palace building was scattered with clusters of flags. At the eastern gate stood countless gatherings of sages, priests and seers.

203.17.20

dakṣiṇadvāragāsaṅkhyarājarājeśamaṇḍalam | paścimadvāragāsaṅkhyalalanālokamaṇḍalam || 20 ||

At the southern gate stood countless kings and overlords of kings; at the western gate stood countless crowds of women looking on.

213.17.21

uttaradvāragāsaṃkhyarathahastyāśvasaṃkulam | ekabhṛtyavinirṇītadakṣiṇāpathavigraham || 21 ||

At the northern gate were crowded countless chariots, elephants and horses, and the affairs of the southern lands were being settled by a single officer.

223.17.22

karṇāṭanātharacitapūrvadeśakriyākramam | surāṣṭrādhipanirṇītasarvamllecchottarāpatham || 22 ||

The order of business for the eastern lands was set by the lord of Karnataka; the whole northern region of foreign peoples was settled by the ruler of Saurashtra.

233.17.23

māladeśasamākrāntasarvapāścātyataṅgaṇam | dakṣiṇābdhitṭāyātalankādūtavinoditam || 23 ||

The whole western Tangana region had been overrun by the Mala country, and the scene was enlivened by envoys who had come from Lanka, on the shore of the southern ocean.

243.17.24

pūrvābdhitṭamāhendrasiddhoktagaganāpagam | uttarābdhitṭāyātadūtavarṇitaguhyakam || 24 ||

There were envoys who told of the river of the sky near Mount Mahendra, on the shore of the eastern ocean, and envoys who had come from the shore of the northern ocean, describing the Guhyakas.

253.17.25

paścimābdhitṭālokavarṇitāstamadyakramam | asaṃkhyavaddhabhūpālakalākīrṇākhilājiram || 25 ||

The assembly was so vast that people said it reached the shore of the western ocean, where the sun was setting that very day; its whole courtyard was crowded with countless kings bound in loyal service, together with their skills.

263.17.26

yajñavāṭapaṭhadvipra jitatūryāgraniḥsvanam | bandikolāhalollāsapratiśrudvanakuñjaram || 26 ||

The chanting of priests in the sacrificial enclosure was so loud that it drowned out the sound of musical instruments; the joyful uproar of the court bards echoed back even from the elephants in the forest.

273.17.27

geyavādyodyatadhvānapradhvanadgaganāntaram | hayahastirathārājirajomeghaghanāmbaram || 27 ||

The space of the sky rang loudly with the sound of singing and music; the dust raised by rows of horses, elephants, and chariots made the sky as thick and dense as clouds.

283.17.28

puṣpakarpūradhūpāḍhyaṃ gandhāmoditaparvatam | sarvamaṇḍalasaṃbhāraracitānekaśāsanam || 28 ||

It was rich with flowers, camphor, and incense, and its whole surroundings were made fragrant with scent; goods gathered from every province filled it, and from there many orders went out to those provinces.

293.17.29

yaśaḥkarpūrajaladasuśubhrāmbaraparvatam | rodasīstambhabhūtaikasvapratāpajitārkakam || 29 ||

His fame was as pure and white as camphor, as clouds, and as a snow-covered mountain, and it filled the whole sky; his own splendor alone stood like a pillar between heaven and earth, and it outshone the sun.

303.17.30

ārambhamantharodārakāryasaṃvyagrabhūmipam | nānānagaranirmāṇasodyogasthapatīśvaram || 30 ||

The king stayed busy with great and generous projects, ones he began carefully and slowly; he was the master of the builders who were hard at work putting up many new cities.

papātātha mahārambhā sā tāṃ narapateḥ sabhām | vyomātmikā vyomamayīṃ mihikevāmbarāṭavīm || 31 ||

Then she, with her great resolve, being herself made of empty space, came down onto that assembly of the king, itself made of empty space, the way mist settles down over a forest in the sky.

bhramantīṃ tatra tāmagre dadṛśuste na kecana | saṃkalpamātraracitāṃ puruṣāḥ kāminīmiva || 32 ||

No one there saw her moving about in front of them, because she was made purely of imagination - just as men cannot see a woman conjured up only by another man's imagination.

In the same way they did not see her walking there right in front of them, just as a city built by one person's imagination is not seen by another person.

prāktanāneva tānsarvānsvāndadarśa sabhāgatān | bhūbhṛteva susaṃprajñānnagarānnagarāntaram || 34 ||

She saw all those same people of her own world gathered in the assembly, exactly as before, and she recognized them well - the way a king clearly recognizes his own cities among cities that are not his.

taddeśāṃstsamācārāṃstathā tāneva bālakāntā eva bālavanitāstāṃstāneva ca mantriṇaḥ || 35 ||

She saw those same lands and those same customs, and in the same way those same young lovers, those same young wives, and those same ministers.

tāneva bhūmipālāṃśca tāṃstāneva ca paṇḍitān| tāneva narmasacivānbhṛtyāṃstāneva tādṛśān || 36 ||

She saw those same kings, those same scholars, those same joking companions, and those same kinds of servants.

373.17.37

athānyānapyapūrvāṃśca paṇḍitānsuhṛdastathā| vyavahārāṃstathānyāṃśca paurānanyāṃstathaiva ca || 37 ||

But she also saw others - new scholars and friends she had not seen before, other kinds of dealings, and other citizens as well.

madhyāhnakāle divase ghanadāvākulā diśaḥ| antarikṣaṃ sacandrārkaṃ sāmbhodapavanadhvani || 38 ||

It was midday, yet the directions were hazy with the smoke of thick forest fires; the sky held both the moon and the sun together, and the wind driving the clouds made its own sound.

393.17.39

mahīruhanadīśailapurapattanamaṇḍitam| nānānagaravinyāsa jaṅgalagrāmasaṃkulam || 39 ||

It was decorated with trees, rivers, mountains, towns, and cities; it was crowded with many kinds of city layouts, and with wild areas and villages.

dviraṣṭavarṣaṃ bhūpālaṃ prāktanyā jarasojjhitam| prāktanīṃ janatāṃ sarvāṃ samastāngrāmavāsinaḥ || 40 ||

She saw the king now sixteen years old, freed from the old age he had before; and she saw all the same former people, and all the same villagers, just as before.

sā tānālokya lalanā cintāparavaśābhavat | tasminnagaravāstavyāḥ kiṃ te sarve mṛtā iti || 41 ||

Seeing them, the woman was overcome with worry, thinking, are all the people who lived in that other city dead?

punaḥ prajñaptibodhena prāktanāntaḥpuraṃ gatā | kṣaṇena ca dadarśātra sārdharātre tathaiva tān || 42 ||

Then, as an old memory awoke in her, she went again to her former inner chambers, and in a single moment she saw them there too, at midnight, just as they were before.

atha sotthāpayāmāsa nidrākrāntaṃ sakhījanam | āha cātīva me duḥkhamāsthānaṃ dīyatāmiti || 43 ||

Then she woke up her friend, who was overcome with sleep, and said, I am in great pain, let the audience hall be made ready for me.

bhartuḥ siṃhāsanasya asya pārśve tiṣṭhāmyahaṃ yadi | paśyāmi svabhyasaṃghātaṃ tatprajīvāmi nānyathā || 44 ||

If I can stand beside my husband's throne, and see my own family gathered there, only then will I go on living, not otherwise.

sa rājaparivāro'tha tayetyukte yathākramam | āsīdvinidraḥ saṃvyagraḥ sarvaḥ sarvasvakarmaṇi || 45 ||

Then, when she had said this, the king's whole household, one after another, woke up and became busy, each one with all their own duties.

paurānsabhyātsamānetuṃ yayuryāṣṭīkapaṅktayaḥvyavahāraṃ kalayitumurvyāmarkakarā iva || 46 ||

Rows of staff-bearing officials went out to gather the citizens for the assembly, to carry out the day's business, like rows of sunbeams spreading out over the earth.

āsthānabhūmiṃ bhṛtyāśca mārjayāmāsurādṛtāḥprāvṛṭpayodamalina khaṃ śaradvāsarā iva || 47 ||

Servants carefully swept and cleaned the ground of the assembly hall, the way autumn days clear away a sky that had been darkened by monsoon clouds.

aṅgaṇaṃ prati dīpaughāstasthuḥ pītatamombhasaḥāścaryadarśanāyeva saṃprāptā ṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ || 48 ||

Rows of lamps stood facing the courtyard, having drunk up the water of darkness, as if rows of stars had come down to see something wonderful.

janatāḥ pūrayāmāsuḥ pūrairajirabhūmikāḥabdhīnpralayasaṃśuṣkānpurāsarga ivāmbhasā || 49 ||

The crowds of people filled the palace grounds with a flood, just as, long ago at the start of creation, water filled the oceans that had dried up completely in the great dissolution.

ājagmurmantrisāmantāḥ svaṃsvaṃ sthānamaninditāḥtrailokye punarutpanne lokapālā yathā diśaḥ || 50 ||

The ministers and the vassal kings, all blameless, came to their own places, just as the guardians of the directions come to their own quarters when the three worlds arise again.

513.17.51

vavurākīrṇakarpūrasāndrāvaśyāyaśītalāḥ | utphullakusumodvāntamāṃsalāmoditānilāḥ || 51 ||

Breezes blew, cool with thick dew mixed with camphor, made heavy and fragrant by the scent breathed out from fully bloomed flowers.

523.17.52

paryanteṣu pratīhārāstasthurdhavalavāsasaḥ | ṛṣyamūkārkatāpārtameghamālā ivādriṣu || 52 ||

At the edges, the gatekeepers stood dressed in white, like rows of clouds resting on the mountains of Rishyamuka, worn thin by the heat of the sun.

prabhāpītatamaḥ puñjāḥ petuḥ puṣpōtkarā bhuvi | caṇḍamārutavidhvastāstārakānikarā iva || 53 ||

Heaps of flowers fell on the ground, their masses of darkness swallowed by their own light, like clusters of stars scattered by a fierce wind.

āsthānaṃ pūrayāmāsurmahīpālānuyāyinaḥ | utphullakamalōtkīrṇaṃ haṃsā iva sarōvaram || 54 ||

The king's followers filled the assembly hall, just as swans fill a lake covered with fully bloomed lotuses.

siṃhāsanasamīpasthē haīmacitraāsane navē | upāviśadasau līlā līlēva smaracētasi || 55 ||

She, Lila, sat down on the new golden, decorated seat next to the throne, like playfulness itself sitting in the mind of the god of love.

dadarśa tānnṛpānsarvānpūrvāneva yathāsthitān | gurūnāryānsakhīnsabhyānsuhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavān || 56 ||

She saw all those kings, exactly as they were before, the teachers, the noble ones, her friends, the courtiers, her well-wishers, relatives, and kin.

sakalameva hi pūrvavadeva sā samavalokya mudam paramāṃ yayau | nṛpatirāṣṭrajanam khalu jīvanābhyuditayā ca babhau śaśivacchriyā || 57 ||

Seeing everything exactly as it was before, she felt the greatest joy; and the king and the people of the kingdom shone with a beauty risen again to life, like the moon.
