13.122.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | prathamaṃ jātamātreṇa puṃsā kiṃcidvikasitabuddhināiva satsaṃgamapareṇa bhavitavyam || 1 ||

Vasishtha said. As soon as a man is born, once his understanding has opened even a little, he must devote himself to keeping company with good people.

anavaratapravāhapatito'yamavidyānadīnivahaḥ śāstrasajjanasamparkādrte na tarituṃ śakyate || 2 ||

This flood of ignorance, an unceasing river always pouring down, cannot be crossed except by contact with scripture and good people.

tena vivekatḥ puruṣasya heyo'pādeyavicāra upa jāyate || 3 ||

Because of that company, a man's power of judgment awakens, and he begins to think about what to reject and what to accept.

tadāsau śubhecchābhidhāṃ vivekabhuvamāpatito bhavati || 4 ||

Then he reaches the stage of discrimination called the good wish.

satyaṃ bhāvaya tena tvaṃ mā mohamanubhāvayaniricchasyātmano necchā kācidapyanaghākṛteḥ || 5 ||

So dwell on what is true, do not dwell on delusion. The self has no desire and its nature is spotless; it has no desire of any kind.

samyagjñānena asamygvāsanāṃ tyajataḥ saṃsmārabhāvanāto manastanutāmeti || 6 ||

For one who gives up wrong desires through right knowledge, and keeps dwelling on remembering the truth, the mind grows thin.

tena tanumānasāṃ nāma vivekabhūmimavatīrṇo bhavati || 7 ||

Because of that, he enters the stage of discrimination called thin-mind.

yadaiva yoginaḥ samyagjñānodayastadaiva sattvāpattiḥ || 8 ||

The moment right knowledge dawns in the yogi, at that same moment he attains purity of being.

tadvāśād vāsanā tanutāṃ gatā yadā tadaivāsāvasaṃsakta ityucyate karmaphalena na badhyata iti || 9 ||

Under the power of that, when his desires grow thin, he is then called unattached — that is, he is not bound by the fruit of his actions.

atha tānavavāśād asatye bhāvanātānavamabhyasyati || 10 ||

Then, because of that thinning, he practices making his attention to unreal things even thinner.

yāvanna kurvannapi vyavaharannapyasatyeṣu saṃsāravastuṣu sthito'pi svātmanyeva kṣīṇamanastvādabhyāsavaśādbāhyaṃ vastu kurvannapi na paśyati nālambanena sevate nābhidhyāyati tanuvāsanatvācca kevalaṃ mūḍhaḥ suptaprabuddha iva kartavyaṃ karoti || 11 ||

Even while he acts, even while he deals with the world, even while placed among the unreal things of ordinary life, he stays only in his own self. Because his mind has grown thin through this practice, even when he does some outer thing, he does not really see it, does not lean on it, does not dwell on it in his mind. Because his desires have grown thin, he simply does what needs to be done, plainly, like someone who is half asleep and half awake.

tanubhāvitamanaskastena yogabhūmikāṃ bhāvanāmadhirūḍhaḥ || 12 ||

With his mind made thin by that practice, he rises to the yoga stage called bhavana, meaning contemplation.

ityantarlīnacittaḥ katichitsaṃvatsarānabhyasya sarvathaiva kurvannapi bāhyapadārthānbhāvanāṃ tyajati turyātmā bhavati tato jīvanmukta ityucyate || 13 ||

In this way, with his mind absorbed within, and after practicing for a few years, even while he goes on doing outer things in every way, he drops all thought of outer objects. He becomes one whose true state is the fourth, beyond the other three, and from then on he is called liberated while still alive.

nābhinandati saṃprāptaṃ nāprāptamabhiśocati | kevalaṃ vigatāśaṅkaṃ saṃprāptamanuvartate || 14 ||

He does not feel joy over what he gets, and does not feel sorrow over what he does not get. Free of all fear, he simply goes along with whatever comes to him.

tvayāpi rāghava jñātaṃ jñātavyamakhilāntaram | nanu te sarvakāryebhyo vāsanā tanutāṃ gatā || 15 ||

You too, Raghava, have now known everything within that needs to be known. Surely, for you, the desire attached to all actions has grown thin.

śarīrātītavṛttistvaṃ śarīrastho'thavā bhava | māgāḥ śokaṃ ca harṣaṃ tvaṃ tvamātmā vigatāmayaḥ || 16 ||

Whether your existence is beyond the body, or you remain living in the body, do not fall into sorrow or joy. You are the self, free from all illness.

tvayyātmani site svacche sarvage sarvadodite | kuto duḥkhasukhe rāma kuto maraṇajanmanī || 17 ||

In you, the self — pure, clear, spread everywhere, always shining — where is there any sorrow or happiness, Rama? Where is there any death or birth?

abandhurapi kasmāttvaṃ bandhuduḥkhāni śocasi | advitīye sthite hyasminbāndhavāḥ ka ivātmani || 18 ||

You have no kin at all — so why do you grieve over the sorrows of kinsmen? When this self stands alone, with nothing besides it, what kinsmen could there be in it?

dṛśyate kevale dehe paramāṇucayaḥ param | deśakālānyatāpatter nātmōdeti na līyatē || 19 ||

In the body all that is seen is just a heap of tiny particles, because place and time keep changing. The self never arises and never dissolves.

avināśo'pi kasmāttvaṃ vinaśyāmīti śocasi | amṛtyuvasatau svacche vināśaḥ ka ivātmani || 20 ||

You cannot be destroyed at all, so why do you grieve thinking, I am dying? In this clear dwelling that knows no death, what destruction could there be for the self?

ghaṭe kapālatāṃ yāte ghaṭākāśo na naśyati | yathā tathā śarīre'sminnaṣṭe'pi na vinaśyati || 21 ||

When a clay pot breaks into pieces, the space that was inside the pot does not get destroyed. In the same way, even when this body is destroyed, the self is not destroyed.

mṛgatṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇyāṃ kṣīṇāyāmātapo yathā | na naśyati tathā dehe naṣṭe nātmā vinaśyati || 22 ||

As when the river of a mirage vanishes, the sunlight that seemed to form it does not vanish, so when the body is destroyed, the self is not destroyed.

vāñchaivodeti te kasmādbhrāntirantarnirarthikā | advitīyo dvitīyaṃ kiṃ yadvastvātmābhivāñchatu || 23 ||

Why does desire even arise in you at all — it is just a useless confusion inside. You are without a second; so what second thing is there for the self to desire as some object?

śravyaṃ spṛśyaṃ tathā dṛśyaṃ rasyam ghreyam ca rāghava | na kiñcidasti jagati vyatiriktaṃ yadātmanaḥ || 24 ||

What can be heard, touched, seen, tasted, and smelled, Raghava — none of it in this whole world is separate from the self.

sarvaśaktāvimāstasminnātmanyevākhilāḥ sthitāḥ | śaktayo vitate vyakte ākāśa iva śūnyatā || 25 ||

All these powers rest completely in that one all powerful Self; within the whole spread out world they are present the way emptiness is present in space.

cittādrāghava rūḍheyaṃ trilokīlalanoditā | trividhena krameṇeha jannā janitabhramā || 26 ||

Rama, this world of three realms has grown out of the mind, rising up like a game; born in three stages, it has created confusion here.

manaḥpraśamane siddhe vāsanākṣayanāmani | karmakṣayābhidhānaiva māyeyaṃ pravinaśyati || 27 ||

When the mind is fully calmed, and that calming is what is called the ending of one's inner tendencies, this illusion, known as the working out of past action, is destroyed completely.

saṃsārogrāraghaṭṭe'sminnārūḍhā yantravāhinī | rajjustāṃ vāsanāmetāṃ chindhi rāghava yatnataḥ || 28 ||

On this harsh waterwheel of worldly life turns the chain of buckets; the rope that drives it is this very desire. Cut it, Rama, and work hard at cutting it.

aparijñāyamānaiṣā mahāmohapradāyinī | parijñātā tvānantākhyā sukhadā brahmadāyinī || 29 ||

Not understood, this gives rise to great delusion; but once it is fully understood, it is called the infinite. Then it gives happiness and grants union with Brahman.

āgatā brahmaṇo bhuktvā saṃsāramiha līlayā | punarbrahmaiva saṃsmṛtya brahmaṇyeva vilīyate || 30 ||

Coming from Brahman, having experienced this world here as a kind of play, remembering Brahman again, it dissolves back into Brahman itself.

śivādrāghava nīrūpādaprameyānniarāmayāt | sarvabhūtāni jātāni prakāśā iva tejasaḥ || 31 ||

Rama, from that auspicious being who has no form, cannot be measured, and has no flaw, all creatures are born, just as rays of light are born from a fire.

rekhāvṛndaṃ yathā parṇe vīcijālaṃ yathā jale | kaṭakādi yathā hemni tathoṣṇādi yathā'nale || 32 ||

As the pattern of veins is in a leaf, as a mesh of waves is in water, as a bangle and such things are in gold, so is heat and such things in fire.

tadetadbhāvanārūpe tathedaṃ bhuvanatrayam | tasmineva sthitaṃ jātaṃ tasmādeva tadeva ca || 33 ||

In just the same way, this world of three realms exists within that same Self whose nature is thought. It rests in that alone, is born from that alone, and is nothing but that.

sa eva sarvabhūtānāmātmā brahmeti kathyate | tasmiñjāte jagajjñātaṃ sa jñātā bhuvanatraye || 34 ||

That very one is called the Self of all beings, Brahman. Once that is known, the whole world is known; that one is the knower in all three worlds.

śāstrasaṃvyavahārārthaṃ tasyāsya vitatākṛteḥ | cidbrahmātmeti nāmāni kalpitāni kṛtātmabhiḥ || 35 ||

For the sake of teaching and everyday explanation, wise men who have perfected themselves have given this vast being names such as consciousness, Brahman, and Self.

viṣayendriyasaṃyoge harṣāmarṣavivarjitā | saiṣā śuddhānubhūtirhi so'yamātmā cidavyayaḥ || 36 ||

Even when the senses meet their objects, it stays free of both pleasure and anger. This alone is pure awareness; this is the Self, consciousness that never perishes.

ākāśātitaraścāśca idaṃ tasmiṃścidātmani | svābhoga eva hi jagatpṛthagvatpratibimbiti || 37 ||

Clearer than the sky itself, in that consciousness which is the Self, the world reflects as if separate, though it is really only its own play.

buddhistadvyatirekeṇa lobhamohādayo hi tān | pātyasadvyatirekeṇa te ca tasmiṃstadeva te || 38 ||

The intellect, when it turns away from the Self, along with greed, delusion, and the rest, drags a person down into what is false and separate. Yet these too rest in that very Self and are nothing but it.

adehasyaiva te rāma nirvikalpacidākṛteḥ | lajjābhayaviṣādebhyaḥ kuto mohaḥ samutthitaḥ || 39 ||

Rama, you are without a body; your true form is consciousness that has no division. So where would confusion, born of shame, fear, and grief, come from?

adeho dehajairebhirlajjādibhirasanmayaiḥ | kiṃ mūrkha iva durbuddhirvikalpairabhibhūyase || 40 ||

You have no body, so why, like a fool with a dull mind, do you let yourself be overwhelmed by these unreal, body born ideas like shame?

akhṇḍacitirūpasya dehe khaṇḍanamāgate | asamyagdarśino'pyasti na nāśaḥ kimu sanmateḥ || 41 ||

The Self is undivided consciousness. When its body comes to an end, even a person who does not see this clearly loses nothing, so how much more true is that for one who understands rightly.

Even if it travelled all the way to the sun's path, nothing could stop it from coming and going. What we call the mind, that should be understood as the real person, not the body.

śarīre satyasati vā pumāneva jagattraye | jño'pyajño'pi sthito rāma naṣṭedehe na naśyati || 43 ||

Whether the body exists or not, it is the person alone who remains present throughout the three worlds. Rama, whether one knows this or not, the person does not die when the body dies.

yānīmāni vicitrāṇi duḥkhāni paripaśyasi | tāni dehasya sarvāṇi nāgrāhyasya cidātmanaḥ || 44 ||

All these many kinds of suffering that you see around you belong entirely to the body, not to the Self, which is consciousness and cannot be seized or touched.

manomārgādatītatvādyāsau śūnyamiva sthitā | cikathaṃ nāma duḥkhairvā suravervā parigṛhyate || 45 ||

Since it lies beyond the reach of the mind, that consciousness stands as if it were empty space, so how could it ever be caught hold of by sorrows or by pleasures?

svāspadātmānam evāsau vinaṣṭād dehapañjarāt | abhyastāṁ vāsanāṁ yātaḥ ṣaṭpadaḥ kham ivāmbujāt || 46 ||

When the cage of the body breaks apart, the Self simply returns to its own true home, to the state it is already used to, the way a bee flies up into the sky, leaving the lotus behind.

asaccedātmatattvaṁ tad asmiṁste dehapañjare | naṣṭe kiṁ nāma naṣṭaṁ syād rāma kenānuśocasi || 47 ||

If the true reality of the Self does not even exist, then when this cage of your body is destroyed, what exactly is lost? Rama, what is there for you to grieve over?

sākṣibhūte same svacche nirvikalpe cidātmani | niricchaṁ pratibimbannti jaganti mukure yathā || 49 ||

In the Self, which is consciousness, the witness, impartial, clear, and free of all division, worlds are reflected without any wish of its own, the way things are reflected in a mirror.

sākṣibhūte same svacche nirvikalpe cidātmani | svayaṁ jaganti dṛśyante sanmāṇāviva raśmayaḥ || 50 ||

In the witness, the equal, the clear, the choiceless self of consciousness, worlds appear by themselves, like rays of light in a fine jewel.

anicchamapi saṁbandho yathā darpaṇabimbayoḥ | tathaivahehātmajagatorbhedābhedau vyavasthitau || 51 ||

Even without wishing, there is a relation, as between a mirror and its reflected image; just so here, between the self and the world, difference and non-difference both stand established.

sūryasaṃnidhimātreṇa yathodeti jagatkriyā | cittasattāmātrekeṇedaṃ jagannispadyate tathā || 52 ||

Just as, by the mere nearness of the sun, the activity of the world arises, so this world comes into being by the mere presence of consciousness.

piṇḍagraho nivṛtto'syā evaṃ rāma jagatsthiteḥ | ākāśameṣā saṃpannā bhavatāmapi cetasi || 53 ||

The grasping of this world's existence as a solid lump has thus ceased, Rama. It has become like empty space, even in your own mind.

sattāmātreṇa dīpasya yathālokaḥ svabhāvataḥ | cittattvasya svabhāvāttu tatheyaṃ jāgatī sthitiḥ || 54 ||

Just as light naturally comes merely from the presence of a lamp, so this existence of the world comes naturally from the nature of the principle of consciousness.

tato vivekavaśato vicāraṇāyām || 55 ||

Then, through the force of discrimination, in inquiry.

saṃkalpasankṣayavaśādgalite tu citte saṃsāramohamihikā galitā bhavanti | svacchaṃ vibhāti śaradīva khamāgatāyāṃ cinmātramekamajamādyamanantamantaḥ || 56 ||

But when the mind itself melts away through the ending of thought and desire, the fog of delusion about the world melts away too. Then, within, pure consciousness, one, unborn, first of all, without end, shines clear, like the sky when autumn arrives.

karmātmakaṃ prathamameva mano'bhyudeti saṃkalpataḥ kamalajaprakṛtīstadetya| nānābhidhaṃ jagadidaṃ hiṃ mudhā tanoti vetāladehakalanāmiva mugdhabālaḥ || 57 ||

First of all, the mind, whose nature is action, arises out of mere will. Taking on the creative power of Brahma the lotus born, it needlessly spins out this world of many names, like a deluded child imagining the body of a ghost.

asanmayaṃ sadiva puro vilakṣyate punarbhavyatha parilīyate punaḥ| svayaṃ manaściti citasaṃsphuradvapurmahārṇave jalavalayāvalī yathā || 58 ||

Though made of the unreal, it appears in front as if real. Again it comes into being, and again it dissolves, the mind itself, a form flashing forth within consciousness, like rings of ripples in a great ocean.
