Vasishtha said: Just as gold forgets that it is gold when it becomes aware of itself as a bangle, and so does not say "I am gold" - in the same way the Self, through this feeling of "I," forgets itself.
Rama said: Muni, how does this feeling of being a bangle arise in gold? And, lord, tell me properly how in the same way this feeling of "I" arises in the Self.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sata evāgamāpāyau praṣṭavyau nāsataḥ satā | ahaṃtvamūrmikātvaṃ ca satī tu na kadācana || 3 ||
Vasishtha said: Only about what is real should one ask how it arose and how it will go, not about what is unreal, from someone who is real. And the state of being "I" and the state of being a bangle are never themselves real.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | hemaṃ hemnūrmikāṃ ca tvaṃ gṛhāṇetyudito yadi | yaddīyate sormikeṇa tattadasti na saṃśayaḥ || 4 ||
Vasishtha said: If someone tells you, "Take this gold, and take this bangle made of gold" - then whatever is given to you as "the bangle," that itself is gold, without doubt.
śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ cet tat prabho kiṃ syādūrmikātvaṃ tu kīdṛśam | anayai vārthanisciyā jñāsyāmi brahmaṇo vapuḥ || 5 ||
Rama said: Lord, if it is so, then what is this state of being a bangle, and what is it like? Only by settling this meaning shall I come to know the true form of Brahman.
Vasishtha said: Raghava, if a form can be described for something that is formless and unreal, then you tell me the shape and the qualities of the son of a barren woman.
This state of being a bangle is nothing but a mistake, a maya, whose true nature is really gold itself. This is its only "form": that when you look closely, it is not seen at all.
In the water of a mirage, in the two moons someone sees double, in this feeling of "I" and such things - their form is only this much: when you look for them closely, they are not found.
Whoever sees the look of silver in a piece of mother-of-pearl - he does not get even one tiny grain of real silver, not even for a moment, not anywhere.
Only because one does not look closely does the unreal shine as if it were real - just as silver shines in mother-of-pearl, and water shines in the mirages of the desert.
When you look closely at something that does not exist, its non-existence becomes clear. But when you do not look closely, it flashes into view - like an ocean appearing in a mirage.
Apart from the one quality of being gold, nothing else really exists in gold. The state of being a bangle, an armlet and so on is like oil in grains of sand - not really there.
Here nothing is purely true and nothing is purely false. Whatever appears, and in whatever way it appears, it works accordingly for practical purposes - like the pranks of a ghost a child imagines.
Whether it is real or unreal, whatever is firmly settled in the heart, that thing produces its effect accordingly - like poison acting like nectar, when it is believed to be nectar.
This alone is that highest-seeming knowledge, this alone is maya, this alone is the cycle of birth and death - namely, imagining "I-ness" for something unreal and without any foundation.
hemnyasti normikāditvamahantādyasti nātmani ahantābhāvavastvemaṃ svacche śānte site pare || 17 ||
In gold there is no such thing as being a bangle; in the Self there is no such thing as "I-ness." So the true reality is the absence of "I-ness," in that clear, peaceful, pure, supreme Self.
na sanātanatā kācinna ca kācidviriñcitā na ca brahmāṇḍatā kācinna ca kācitsutāditā || 18 ||
There is no such thing as being eternal, no such thing as being Brahma the creator, no such thing as being a universe, and no such thing as being a son.
na lokāntaratā kācinna ca svargāditā kvacit na merutā nāsuratā na manastvaṃ na dehatā || 19 ||
There is no such thing as being another world, and no such thing anywhere as being heaven. There is no being Mount Meru, no being a demon, no being the mind, no being the body.
na mahābhūtatā kācinna ca kāraṇatā kvacit na ca trikālakalanā na bhāvābhāvavastutā || 20 ||
There is no such thing as being the great elements, and no such thing anywhere as being a cause. There is no reckoning of the three times - past, present, future - and no such thing as being existence or non-existence.
tvattāhantātmatā tattā sattā'sattā na kācana | na kvacidbhedakalanā na bhāvo na ca rañjanā || 21 ||
There is no such thing as being "you," being "I," being a self, being "that," being existent or being non-existent. Nowhere is there any reckoning of difference, no becoming, and no coloring by feeling.
Everything is peaceful, resting on nothing. What seems to you as the world is really eternal and good. It is free of any sickness, has no reflection, no name, and no cause.
na sannāsan na madhyāntaṃ na sarvaṃ sarvameva ca | manovacobhiragrāhyaṃ śūnyācchūnyaṃ sukhātsukham || 23 ||
It is neither existent nor non-existent, it has no middle and no end, it is not everything, yet it is everything too. It cannot be grasped by mind or by words. It is emptier than empty, and happier than happiness.
Rama said: I have now understood that Brahman is the same everywhere, that it is everything. Even so, tell me again - how does creation come to be seen at all?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | pare śānte paraṃ nāma sthitamitthamidantayā | neha sargo na sargākhyā kācidasti kadācana || 25 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: In that supreme peace, only the name "the supreme" stands, appearing as if it were a "this", an object. Here there is no creation, nor at any time is there anything actually called creation.
Just as water stands within the water of the great ocean, so this rests in the supreme lord. Because of its fluidity, water seems to move, but that supreme state is without any movement.
bhāḥ svātmanīva kacati na kacatyeva tatpadam | bhāsāṃ tattvaṃ hi kacanaṃ padaṃ tvakacanaṃ viduḥ || 27 ||
Light seems to shine within itself, but that supreme state does not shine in that way. The very nature of lights is to shine, but the wise know that supreme state as one that does not shine like that.
Just as, without any up or down, water stirs within the belly of the ocean, so this world flickers within the supreme because of consciousness, yet this many-ness is nothing other than that supreme.
Someone who understands only a little, through the very working of his own consciousness, seems to move toward becoming an object of knowledge. He takes it to be "creation", and so stays forever caught in that idea.
"Creation", it is settled, is only a name for the ultimate reality itself. It is not many things, nor is it something completely different, just as the sky is nothing but sky.
cittātsargasamāpattiracittātsargasaṃkṣayaḥ pare paramasaṃśānte hemnīva kaṭakabhramaḥ || 31 ||
From the mind, creation seems to come into being; when mind is absent, creation dissolves. In that supreme and utterly peaceful reality, it is only like a bracelet imagined in gold.
Creation, which is actually real in itself, is known as real only once the mind becomes still. But when a sense of "I" awareness rises within, the unreal appears to gain existence.
saṃvedanamahantāvatsargasaṃbhramasambhramaḥ asaṃvedanamāśāntaṃ paraṃ viddhi na tajjadaṃ || 33 ||
Awareness bound up with the sense of "I" is itself the confusion that makes up the confusion of creation. The state free of that awareness is the utterly peaceful supreme; know that this is not mere dullness or lifelessness.
This creation seems to be many things, but it is not truly many. For the one who knows, it is entirely one, the very nature of Shiva. It is like an army of clay figures, shaped by the skilled work of sculptors.
This creation that is seen is simply Brahman resting within Brahman, like sky resting in sky, like peace resting in peace, like Shiva resting in Shiva.
Just as a city reflected in a mirror, nine yojanas away, seems both far and not far at the same time, so in the Lord, the workings of "that" and "not that" happen in the same way.
The universe has come forth though it is unreal, and yet it always seems to have come forth as if real. Because it keeps appearing, it always looks like something existing; because it has no real substance, it is actually made of what is unreal.
This creation is like a city seen in a mirror, like the shimmer of water in a mirage, like the illusion of seeing two moons. What truth could there possibly be in it?
Just as scattering magical powder makes a city seem to appear in the sky, so this world appears within consciousness, seeming at once to have substance and to have none.
As long as ignorance, clinging on stubbornly like a brittle old creeper, is not burned down to its very root by the fire of inquiry, it keeps producing, for that whole time, many thick tangles of spreading branches, the many different forests of pleasure and pain.
