13.110.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | paramātkāraṇādādau cicchetyapadapātinī | kalanāpadamāsādya kalā kalilatāṃ gatā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: At the very start, from the highest cause, awareness slips into the state of being called that. Reaching the state of movement, this small part turns into confusion.

asatsveva vimohēṣu rāmaivaṃprāyavṛttiṣu | ghanēṣu tucchatāmetya cirāya parimūrcchati || 2 ||

O Rama, in such things as are not real, this false, deluded activity, becoming dense and yet worthless, stays confused for a long time.

asadeva manovṛttirmānā vistārayaty alam | duḥkhaṃ doṣasahasreṇa vetālāniva bālikā || 3 ||

This unreal, faded working of the mind spreads sorrow far and wide, with a thousand faults, the way a young girl raises evil spirits.

sadeva hi mahāduḥkhamasattāṃ nayati kṣaṇāt | niṣkalaṅkā manovṛttirandhakāramivārkaruk || 4 ||

Even a great sorrow that is real, this mind can turn into nothing in a moment; a pure, stainless working of the mind is like sunlight clearing away darkness.

nayatyabhyāśatāṃ dūraṃ dūramabhyāśatāṃ nayet | mano valgati bhūteṣu bālo bālakhageṣviva || 5 ||

It can bring something far away close, and it can make something close feel far away; the mind jumps among things, like a child playing among baby birds.

abhayaṃ bhayamajñasya cetaso vāsanāvataḥ | dūrato mugdhapānthasya sthāṇuryāti piśācatām || 6 ||

For someone ignorant, whose mind is full of old desires, even a safe thing becomes frightening; from far away, to a confused traveler, a tree stump looks like a ghost.

śatrutvaṃ śaṅkate mitre kalaṅkamalinaṃ manaḥ | madāviṣṭamatirjanturbhramatpaśyati bhūtalam || 7 ||

A mind that is dirtied with a stain suspects a friend of being an enemy; a person whose mind is drunk with pride sees the ground itself spinning.

paryākule hi manasi śaśino jāyate'śaniḥ | amṛtaṃ viṣabhāvena bhuktaṃ yāti viṣakriyām || 8 ||

When the mind is troubled, even the moon seems to send out a thunderbolt; even nectar, eaten while thinking it is poison, acts like poison.

surapattananirmāṇamasatsadiva paśyati | vāsanāvalitaṃ cetaḥ svapnavajjāgradeva hi || 9 ||

It sees a city of the gods being built, seeing the unreal as if it were real; a mind that is bent by desire acts, even while awake, exactly as it does in a dream.

mohaikakāraṇaṃ jantormanaso vāsanolvaṇā | utkhātavyā prayatnena mūlocchedena saiva ca || 10 ||

The strong desire in the mind is the one and only cause of a creature's delusion; it must be dug out with effort, pulled out completely by its root.

vāsanāvāgurākṛṣṭo manohariṇako nṛṇām | parāṃ vivaśatāmeti saṃsāravana-gulmake || 11 ||

The mind of a person is like a young deer, dragged by the trap of desire; it becomes completely helpless in the bushes of the forest of worldly life.

yena chchinnā vicāreṇa jīvasya jñeyavāsanā | nirabhrasyeva sūryasya tasyāloko virājate || 12 ||

The person who, through careful thinking, cuts off his desire to know and grasp more things, his light shines out like the sun with no clouds.

atastvaṃ mana evedaṃ naraṃ viddhi na dehakam | jaḍo deho manaścātra na jaḍaṃ nājaḍaṃ viduḥ || 13 ||

So know that a person is really this mind, not just the body. The body is a lifeless thing, but here, about the mind, no one can say for sure whether it is lifeless or not.

yatkṛtaṃ manasā tāta tatkṛtaṃ viddhi rāghava | yattyaktaṃ manasā tāvattattyaktaṃ viddhi cānagha || 14 ||

Son, know that whatever the mind does is really done, Rama; and, faultless one, whatever the mind gives up is really given up.

manomātraṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ manaḥ paryantamaṇḍalam | mano vyoma mano bhūmirmano vāyurmano mahān || 15 ||

The whole world is nothing but mind; the round horizon all around is mind. The sky is mind, the earth is mind, the wind is mind, and the great one is mind too.

mano yadi padārthe tu tadbhāvena na yojayet tataḥ sūryodaye'pyete na prakāśāḥ kadācana || 16 ||

If the mind does not link itself to a thing by knowing it as that thing, then even when the sun rises, these things would never appear lit up at all.

mano mohamupādatte yasyāsau mūḍha ucyate śarīre mohamāpanne na śavo mūḍha ucyate || 17 ||

The one whose mind falls into confusion is called a fool; but when a body falls senseless, that is, when it dies, the dead body is not called a fool.

manaḥ paśya bhavatyakṣi śrṛṇvacchravaṇatāṃ gatam tvagbhāvaṃ sparśanādeti ghrāṇatāmeti jighraṇāt || 18 ||

The mind, when it looks, becomes the eye; when it listens, it becomes the ear; when it touches, it becomes the skin; when it smells, it becomes the nose.

rasanādrasatāmeti vicitrāstatra vṛttiṣu nāṭake nūṭavaddehe mana evānuvartate || 19 ||

From tasting, it becomes taste; its workings there are of many kinds; in the body, the mind alone acts, the way an actor acts in a play.

laghu dīrghaṃ karotyeva satye'sattāṃ prayacchati kaṭutāṃ nayati svādu ripuṃ nayati mitratām || 20 ||

It makes something short seem long, it makes something true seem false, it turns something sweet into something bitter, and it turns an enemy into a friend.

ya eva pratibhāso'sya cetaso vṛttivartinaḥ | tatastadeva pratyakṣaṃ tathātrānubhavādiha || 21 ||

Whatever this active mind makes appear, that very thing becomes what feels real and directly seen, because that is how experience works here.

pratibhāsavaśādeva svapnākulitacetasaḥ | hariścandrasya saṃpannā rātrirdvādaśavārṣikī || 22 ||

Just because of how things appeared to him, King Harishchandra's mind was caught up as if in a dream, and for him a single night became twelve years long.

cittānubhāvavaśato muhūrtatve gataṃ yugam | indradyumnasya vairiñcyapurābhyantaravartinaḥ || 23 ||

Because of the power of what his mind experienced, for King Indradyumna, who was inside Brahma's city, a whole age passed by as if it were just one moment.

manojñayā manovṛttyā sukhatāṃ yāti rauravam | prātaḥprāptavyarājyasya subaddhasyeva bandhanam || 24 ||

With a pleasant working of the mind, even the hell called Raurava can feel like happiness, the way the ropes on a man tied up for the night do not feel heavy, because in the morning he is going to receive a kingdom.

jite manasi sarvaiva vijitā cendriyāvaliḥ | śīryate ca yathā tantau dagdhe mauktikamālikā || 25 ||

When the mind is conquered, the whole row of senses is conquered too, just as a string of pearls falls apart when its thread is burnt.

sarvatra sthitayā svaccharūpayā nirvikārayā | samayā sūkṣmayā nityaṃ cicchaktyā sākṣibhūtayā || 26 ||

The mind is a power of consciousness that stays everywhere; it is pure and clear in nature, unchanging, the same everywhere, subtle, eternal, and it is only a witness.

sarvabhāvānugatayā na cetyārthavibhinnayā | rāmātmasattayā mūkamapi dehasamaṃ jaḍam || 27 ||

It follows every state there is and is not split into different parts by the many things it knows; by the being of the true self, it is, though mute, no different from an inert body.

mano'ntaścalati vyarthaṃ mananaiṣaṇamuhyayā | bahirgirisaridvyomasamudrapuralīlayā || 28 ||

Bewildered by its own urge to think, the mind moves about inside pointlessly; outside, it plays at being mountains, rivers, sky, ocean, and cities.

jāgraccābhimataṃ vastu nayatyamṛtamṛṣṭatām | anīhitaṃ ca viṣatāṃ nayatyamṛtamapyalam || 29 ||

In waking life, the mind turns whatever it likes into something as sweet as nectar, and turns whatever it does not want into poison, even if that very thing is nectar itself.

amṛṣṭasarvabhāvānāmalaṃātmacamatkṛtim | manaḥ svābhimatākāraṃ rūpaṃ sṛjati vastuṣu || 30 ||

For all the things it has not yet touched, the mind is entirely its own wonder maker, it creates in objects whatever shape and form it likes.

spandeṣu vāyutāmeti prakāśeṣu prakāśatām | draveṣu dravatāmeti cicchaktisphuriataṃ manaḥ || 31 ||

In things that move, the mind becomes movement itself, like the wind; in things that shine, it becomes light; in things that flow, it becomes the flowing, the mind is nothing but a flash of the power of consciousness.

pṛthvyāṃ kaṭhinatāmeti śūnyatāṃ śūnyadṛṣṭiṣu | sarvatrechchāsthitiṃ yāti cicchaktisphuriataṃ manaḥ || 32 ||

In solid things, the mind becomes hardness; where there is a view of empty space, it becomes emptiness; everywhere it takes the shape of a wish, the mind is nothing but a flash of the power of consciousness.

śuklaṃ kṛṣṇīkarotyeva kṛṣṇaṃ nayati śuklatām | vinaiva deśakālābhyāṃ śaktiṃ paśyāsya cetasaḥ || 33 ||

Look at the power of this mind, without needing any place or time, it turns white into black, and turns black into white.

manasyanyatra saṃsakte carvitasyaapi jihvayā | bhojanasyāpi mṛṣṭasya na svādo'syānubhūyate || 34 ||

When the mind is caught up somewhere else, its taste is not felt at all, even of tasty food that the tongue is chewing right then.

yaccittadṛṣṭaṃ taddṛṣṭaṃ na dṛṣṭaṃ tadalokitam | andhakāre yathā rūpamindriyaṃ nirmitaṃ tathā || 35 ||

What the mind attends to is seen, what it does not attend to is not seen at all, just as the eye may be fully formed and working, yet in darkness it cannot see any shape.

indriyeṇa mano dehi manasendriyamunmanaḥindriyāṇi prasūtāni manaso nendriyānmanaḥ || 36 ||

Through the senses one seems to get a body, and through the mind, a sense organ, though in truth these are beyond mind itself. The senses are born from the mind, the mind is not born from the senses.

atyantabhinnayoraikyaṃ yeṣāṃ cittaśarīrayoḥjñātajñeyā mahātmāno manasyāste supaṇḍitāḥ || 37 ||

Those great souls are the truly wise, well versed in what should be known, they understand how the mind and the body, two things utterly different from each other, come to feel like one.

kusumollāsidhammillā helācalitalocanākāṣṭhakuḍyopamāṅgeṣu lagnāpyamanaso'ṅganā || 38 ||

Take a woman with flowers blossoming in her hair and eyes moving playfully, even while her body clings close to her lover's limbs, if her mind is elsewhere, it is exactly like pressing against a wooden wall.

manasyanyatra saṃsakte vītarāgeṇa kānanekravyādacarvito'ṅkasthaḥ svakaro'pi na lakṣitaḥ || 39 ||

When the mind is fixed elsewhere, a man free of desire will not notice even his own hand, even if, in the forest, he is sitting in the grip of a flesh eating beast that is chewing on him.

sukhīkartuṃ suduḥkhāni duḥkhīkartuṃ sukhāni ca sukhenaivāśu yujyante manaso'tiśayā muneḥ || 40 ||

The mind's extraordinary powers, o sage, can easily and at once turn great sorrows into happiness, and turn pleasures into sorrow.

manasyanyatra saṃsakte kathyamānāpi yatnataḥ | latā paraśukṛtteva kathā vicchidyate bata || 41 ||

When the mind is caught up elsewhere, even a story being told with great care breaks off, alas, just like a creeper cut through by an axe.

manasyadritaṭārūḍhe gṛhasthānāpi jantunā | śubhrābhra-kandara-bhrānti-duḥkhaṃ samanubhūyate || 42 ||

When the mind climbs onto a mountain ledge, even an ordinary householder sitting at home feels the distress of being lost, as if confused inside a cave of white clouds.

manasyullasite svapne hṛdyeva puraparvatāḥ | ākāśa iva vistīrṇe dṛśyante nirmitāḥ kṣamāḥ || 43 ||

When the mind lights up in a dream, cities, mountains, and whole lands appear, created right within the heart, spread out vast, as if they were the sky itself.

mano vilulite svapne hṛdyevādripurāvalim | tanoti calitāmbhodhirvīcīcayamivātmani || 44 ||

When the mind is stirred in a dream, it spreads out, within the heart, a whole row of mountains and cities, the way a churned ocean throws up a mass of waves within itself.

453.110.45

antarabdhijalādyadvattaraṅgāpīḍavīcayaḥ | dehāntarmanastadvatsvapnādripurarājayaḥ || 45 ||

Just as waves and heaps of ripples rise up from the water deep inside the ocean, in the same way, rows of dream mountains and dream cities rise up from the mind deep inside the body.

aṅkurasya yathā patralatāpuṣpaphalaśriyaḥ| manaso'sya tathā jāgratsvapnavibhramabhūmayaḥ || 46 ||

Just as a single sprout gives rise to the beauty of leaves, vines, flowers, and fruit, in the same way, this one mind gives rise to all the confused worlds of waking and dreaming.

vyatiriktā yathā hemno na hemavanitā tathā| jāgratsvapnakriyālakṣmīrvyatiriktā na cetasaḥ || 47 ||

Just as a golden figure of a woman is not something separate from the gold it is made of, the whole rich display of waking and dream activity is not something separate from the mind.

dhārākaṇormiphenaśrīryathā saṃlakṣyate'mbhasaḥ| tathā vicitravibhavā nānāteyaṃ hi cetasaḥ || 48 ||

Just as the beauty of streams, droplets, waves, and foam is seen as belonging to water, this whole varied, wondrous richness of forms belongs, in truth, to the mind.

svacittavṛttireveha jāgratsvapnadṛśoditam| rasāveśādupādatte śailūṣa iva bhūmikām || 49 ||

Here it is only the mind's own movement that shows itself as the things seen in waking and in dream. Carried away by the feeling of it, the mind takes up a part, the way an actor puts on a role.

caṇḍālatvaṃ hi lavaṇe pratibhāsavaśādyathā| tathedaṃ jagadābhogi mano mananamātrakam || 50 ||

Just as Lavana, through the sway of mere appearance, seemed to become an untouchable, so this whole world, which seems to hold everything within it, is nothing but the mind's own thinking.

yadyatsaṃvedyate kiṃcit tena tenāśu bhūyate | mano manananirmāṇaṃ yathecchasi tathā kuru || 51 ||

Whatever thing the mind comes to know, by that very thing it quickly becomes that thing. The mind builds itself only by its own thinking, so shape it however you wish.

nānāpurasaricchailarūpatāmetya dehinām | tanotyantaḥsthamavedaṃ jāgratsvapnamayaṃ manaḥ || 52 ||

Taking on the shapes of many cities, rivers, and mountains, this mind that lives inside every body, a mind made of waking and dream, spreads out what is really only within it.

suratvāddaitatāmetya nāgatvānnagatāmapi | pratibhāsavaśāccittamāpannaṃ lavaṇo yathā || 53 ||

From being a god it turns into a demon, from being a serpent it turns into a mountain. The mind falls under the spell of mere appearance this way, just as it happened with Lavana.

naratvādeti nārītvaṃ pitṛtvātputratāṃ gataḥ | yathā kṣipraṃ prati naraḥ svasaṃkalpāttathā manaḥ || 54 ||

It goes from being a man to being a woman, from being a father to being a son. Just as a man quickly turns into something else by his own intention, so does the mind.

saṃkalpatḥ pramriyate saṃkalpājjāyate punaḥ | manaścirantanābhyastājjīvatāmetyanākṛti || 55 ||

By its own intention the mind dies, and by intention it is born again. Through habits it has carried for a long time, this shapeless mind comes to take on living bodies.

mano mananasammūḍhamūḍhavāsanamātatam | saṃkalpādyonimāyāti sukhaduḥkhe bhayābhaye || 56 ||

The mind, made foolish by its own thinking and stretched wide by foolish impressions, comes through intention to its next birth, into joy and sorrow, into fear and fearlessness.

sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ ca manasi tile tailamiva sthitam | taddeśakālavaśato ghanaṃ vā tanu vā bhavet || 57 ||

Joy and sorrow sit inside the mind the way oil sits inside a sesame seed. Depending on the place and the time, they become thick or thin.

tailaṃ tilasya cākrāntyā sphuṭatāmeti śāśvatīm | cetaso mananāsaṃgādghanībhūte sukhāsukhe || 58 ||

Oil becomes clearly visible only once the sesame seed is pressed and crushed. In the same way, joy and sorrow become dense and evident once the mind keeps thinking about them.

deśakālābhidhānena rāma saṃkalpa eva hi | kathyate tadvāśādyasmāddeśakālau sthitiṃ gatau || 59 ||

Rama, what we call place and time is really nothing but this same intention, because place and time exist as they do only under the power of that intention.

praśāmyatyullasatyeti yāti nandati valgati | manaḥśarīrasaṃkalpe phalite na śarīrakam || 60 ||

It calms down, it brightens up, it goes, it comes, it rejoices, it leaps about, all this happens because the mind's own idea of a body bears fruit; the body itself does none of it.

nānāsphārasamullāsaiḥ svasaṃkalpopakalpitaiḥ | mano valgati dehe'smin sādhvīvāntaḥpurājire || 61 ||

With many great bursts of excitement, all shaped by its own intention, the mind leaps about inside this body, the way a virtuous woman moves about in the courtyard of the women's quarters.

cāpale prasarastasmādantaryena nadīyate | manovilayamādatte tasyālāna iva dvipaḥ || 62 ||

Because of that restlessness, the mind gets bound from within, and it then reaches its own stilling, the way an elephant tied to its post is held still.

na spandate mano yasya śastrastambha ivottamaḥ | sadvasuto'sau puruṣaḥ śiṣṭāḥ kardamakīṭakāḥ || 63 ||

The one whose mind does not move at all, standing firm like a fine iron pillar, he alone is truly a person; everyone else is just a worm in the mud.

yasyācapalatāṃ yātaṃ mana ekatra saṃsthitam | anuttamapadenāsau dhyānenānugato'nagha || 64 ||

O sinless one, the man whose mind has stopped wavering and stays fixed on one point reaches, through that steady meditation, the highest state there is.

saṃyamānmanasaḥ śāntimeti saṃsāravibhramaḥ | mandare'spandatāṃ yāte yathā kṣīramahārṇavaḥ || 65 ||

When the mind is reined in, the whole whirl of worldly life becomes calm, just as the great ocean of milk grows still once Mount Mandara stops churning it.

mānasyo vṛttayo yā yā bhogasaṃkalpavibhrabhaiḥ | saṃsāravirṣavṛkṣasya tā evāṅkurayonayaḥ || 66 ||

Whatever movements arise in the mind out of the confusions of desire and intention, these very movements are the seeds from which the poison tree of worldly life sprouts.

cittaṃ calatkavalayaṃ valayanta ete mūḍhā mahājaḍajave madamohamandāḥ | āvartavartini vilūnaviśīrṇacintācakrabhrame puruṣadurbhramarāḥ patanti || 67 ||

The mind is like a blue lotus caught in a swirling current. These fools, dulled by pride and delusion, circle around it in that huge, sluggish rushing river, and like unlucky bees they fall into a whirlpool where the wheel of thought spins, torn and scattered.
