13.102.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | svasaṃkalpavaśānmūḍho mohameti na paṇḍitaḥ | akṣaye kṣayasaṃkalpānmohyate śiśureva hi || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: A fool becomes deluded because of his own imagining; a wise man does not. Only a child gets confused, imagining decay in what never decays at all.

śrīrāma uvāca | ko'sau saṃkalpitaḥ kena kṣayo brahmavidāṃ vara | asataiva mahāmohaṃ yenādāttatsadaiva hi || 2 ||

Rama said: O best of the knowers of Brahman, who imagined this destruction, and of what? Through it, something that is not real has taken on such great delusion that it seems to be real.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asatā bhūtasaṃghena kṣayo'haṃkāranāmadhṛk | vetālaḥ śiśuneveha mithyaiva parikalpitaḥ || 3 ||

Vasishtha said: Through the unreal coming-together of the elements, this destruction that goes by the name of the ego is imagined here falsely, just as a child imagines a ghost.

ekasminneva sarvasminsthithe paramavastuni | kutaḥ ko'yamahaṃ nāma kathaṃ nāma kiloditaḥ || 4 ||

When everything rests in that one supreme reality alone, where does this thing called 'I' come from, and how is it even said to have arisen?

vastuto nāstyahaṃkāraḥ paramātmanyabhedini | asamygadarśanānmārgīsarittīvrātape yathā || 5 ||

In truth, there is no ego at all in the undivided supreme Self. It only appears to be there, the way a traveler in the fierce heat sees a river that is not there, because of faulty seeing.

manomani mahārambhaḥ saṃsāra iti lakṣyate | ātmanātmānamāśritya sphuratyantaryathāmbhasā || 6 ||

This world is seen as a great undertaking, the jewel-like creation of the mind. Resting on itself by itself, it shimmers within, the way something shimmers within water.

asamygadarśanaṃ tena tyaja rāma nirāśrayam | sāśrayaṃ satyamānandi samygadarśanamāśraya || 7 ||

So, Rama, give up that wrong way of seeing, which has no real support to stand on. Take hold instead of right seeing, which is well grounded, true, and full of joy.

dhiyā vicāradharmiṇyā mohasaṃrambhahīnayā | vicārayādhunā satyamasatyaṃ saṃparityaja || 8 ||

With an intellect turned to inquiry, free from the grip of delusion, inquire now into what is true, and let go completely of what is false.

abaddho baddha ityuktvā kiṃ śocasi mudhāiva hi | anantasyātmatattvasya kiṃ kathaṃ kena badhyate || 9 ||

Having called yourself bound though you are not bound, why do you grieve, for no reason at all? Of the infinite reality that is the Self, what could be bound, how, and by whom?

nānā'nānātvakalanā tvavibhinnamahātmani | sarvasminbrahmatattve'smin kiṃ baddhaṃ kiṃ vimucyate || 10 ||

The idea of many things or of one thing is only imagined in the undivided great Self. In this one reality of Brahman, which is everything, what is bound, and what is set free?

anārto'pyārtimānbhāti cchinne'ṅge kiñca tāmyati | bhedābhedavikārārtiḥ kācin nātmani vidyate || 11 ||

Though not suffering, one appears to suffer, and even writhes when a limb is cut off; but no suffering caused by change, whether it is called division or non-division, exists at all in the Self.

dehe naṣṭe kṣate kṣīṇe kātmanaḥ kṣatirāgatā | bhastrāyāṃ paridagdhāyāṃ bhastrāpūro na naśyati || 12 ||

When the body is destroyed, wounded, or wasted away, what loss has come to the Self? When a bellows is burnt up, the air that filled the bellows is not destroyed.

dehaḥ patatu vodeutu kā naḥ kṣatirupasthitā | ko naṣṭaḥ prakṣate puṣpe āmodo vyomasanśrayaḥ || 13 ||

Let the body fall or let it rise, what loss is there for us? When a flower withers, what is really destroyed? Its fragrance simply belongs to the sky.

āpatantu vapuḥpadme sukhaduḥkhahimaśriyaḥ | ākāśoḍuyanālīnāṃ kā naḥ kṣatirupasthitā || 14 ||

Let the frost of pleasure and pain fall on the lotus of the body — what loss is there for us, who are like a line of birds flying through the open sky?

dehaḥ patatu vodeutu yātu vā gaganāntaram | tadvilakṣaṇarūpasya kāsau bhavati me kṣatiḥ || 15 ||

Let the body fall, or rise, or go off into the middle of the sky. For one whose nature is different from that body, what loss is there for me?

yathā payodamrutoryathā ṣaṭpadapadmayoḥ | tathā rāghava saṃbandhastvaccharīratvadātmanoḥ || 16 ||

As is the relation between the cloud and the wind, as is the relation between the bee and the lotus, so, Raghava, is the relation between your body and your Self.

mano rāma śarīraṃ hi jagataḥ sakalasya ca | ādyā śaktiścidādhyātmā na naśyati kadācana || 17 ||

Rama, the mind is indeed the body of the entire world. But the primal power, consciousness, the innermost Self, never perishes at any time.

yo'sāvātmā mahāprājña na naśyati na gacchati | na naśyati kadācicca kiṃ mudhā paritapyase || 18 ||

O greatly wise one, that Self does not perish, and it does not go anywhere. It never perishes at any time — why do you torment yourself for nothing?

viśīrṇe'bhre yathā vātaḥ śuṣke'bje ṣaṭpado yathā | yātyanantapadaṃ vyoma tathātmā dehasaṃkṣaye || 19 ||

As the wind moves on to the endless sky once the cloud has scattered, as the bee flies off into the boundless sky once the lotus has dried up, so does the Self, when the body comes to its end.

saṃsāre'sminviharato mano'pi hi na naśyati | jñānāgninā vinā jantorātmanāśe tu kā kathā || 20 ||

Even the mind of someone wandering through this world does not perish without the fire of true knowledge. So what then is there to say about the Self of a living being being destroyed?

yaḥ kuṇḍavadaranyāyo yo ghaṭākāśayoḥ kramaḥ | sthitirdēhātmanoḥ saiva savināśāvināśayoḥ || 21 ||

The relation is like that of the fruit moving about inside the bowl, or like that between the space shut inside a pot and the space everywhere. That very same relation holds between the body and the Self — one perishable, the other never perishing.

badaraṃ hastamāyāti yathā sphuṭati kuṇḍakē | ātmā gaganamāyāti tathā calati dēhakē || 22 ||

As the fruit comes into the hand when it slips out of the bowl, so, while the body merely moves about, the Self goes back into the sky.

kumbhē gacchatyakumbhatvaṃ kumbhākāśo yathāmbarē | tiṣṭhatyēvamayaṃ kṣīṇē dēhē dēhī nirāmayaḥ || 23 ||

As, when the pot is gone, its being-a-pot ends and the space once shut inside it joins the open sky, so, when the body wastes away, the one who dwelt in it remains, free of all affliction.

manodēho hi jantūnāṃ dēśakālatirōhitaḥ | muhurmṛtipaṭācchannaḥ śaṭhē kiṃ paridēvanā || 24 ||

The mind and body of living beings are hidden away by place and time, and again and again covered over by the veil of death. Wretch, why this lament?

dēśakālatirōdhānē mūḍhō'pi maraṇē naraḥ | kiṃ bibhēti mahābāhō nēha paśyati kaścana || 25 ||

Death is only the vanishing of a place and a time. So why does even a foolish man fear death, mighty-armed Rama? No one really sees anything lost here.

atastvaṃ vāsanāṃ rāma mithyaivāhamiti sthitām | tyaja pakṣīśvaro vyomagamano'tka ivāṇḍakam || 26 ||

So, Rama, give up this false belief fixed in you, the thought I am this body, which is nothing but a lie. Give it up the way the king of birds, eager to fly into the sky, leaves behind the eggshell.

eṣā hi mānasī śaktiriṣṭāniṣṭanibandhanī | anayaiva mudhā bhrāntyā svapnavatparikalpanā || 27 ||

This power of the mind is what ties us to what we like and what we dislike. Through this same delusion, the world is imagined for no reason, like a dream.

avidyaiṣā durantaiṣā duḥkhāyaiṣā vivardhate | aparijñāyamānaiṣā tanotīdamasanmayam || 28 ||

This is ignorance. It has no end. It grows only to bring sorrow. When it is not recognized, it stretches out this world, which is made of what is not real.

eṣā tucchavadākāśaṃ tuṣāramaliñaṃ yathā | paripaśyati vibhrāntā svarūpasya svabhāvataḥ || 29 ||

This confused power looks at its own true nature as if it were worthless, the way the clear sky looks stained by frost, though the sky itself stays clean.

asadevedamārambhamantharaṃ sadivotthitam | kalpitaṃ jagadābhogi dīrghasvapna ivaitayā || 30 ||

This world is unreal from the very start, even though it seems slow and solid. It has risen up as if it were real. It is only imagined as vast by this same power, like a long dream.

bhāvanāmātra evāsyāḥ svarūpaṃ kartṛtāṃ gatam| jagannāmāvilaṃ cakṣurvyomni bimbarucāmiva || 31 ||

The true nature of this power is nothing but imagination, which has taken on the role of the doer. Because of it, the eye that looks at the world becomes clouded, like an eye looking at bright shining orbs in the sky and seeing them blurred.

layamasyaḥ svarūpaṃ tvaṃ naya rāma vicāraṇāt| yathā himaśilāyāstu tapnāddivasādhipaḥ || 32 ||

Rama, through careful inquiry, lead the true nature of this mind to its dissolving, just as the lord of the day, the sun, melts a block of ice with his heat.

himābhāvārthino'rkasya svodayene'psitaṃ yathā| siddhyatyevaṃ vicāreṇa manonāśārthino'rthitam || 33 ||

Just as the sun, wanting the ice to be gone, gets his wish simply by rising, in the same way, through inquiry, the wish of one who wants the mind destroyed is fulfilled.

avidyā'saṃprabuddhā hi vitatānarthadurgamā| nānendrajālakalanāṃ śambaro hema varṣati || 34 ||

Ignorance, when it is not woken up to and understood, is vast, full of harm, and hard to cross. It works its many tricks the way the demon Shambara pours down gold through his magic.

svavināśakriyāṃ caitāṃ mana eva karotyalam| mano hyātmavadhaṃ nāma nāṭakaṃ parinṛtyati || 35 ||

And it is the mind itself that fully carries out this act of destroying itself. The mind dances through the whole play called killing the self.

ātmānamīkṣate cetḥ svavināśāya kevalam | nahi jānāti durbuddhirvināśaṃ pratyupasthitam || 36 ||

The mind looks at itself only in order to destroy itself. The foolish mind does not know that its own destruction stands right in front of it.

svayaṃ saṃkalpamātreṇa svavināśadṛśāmidam | manaḥ saṃsādhayatyāśu kleśo nātropayujyate || 37 ||

By mere will alone, this mind quickly brings about its own end for those who see that end coming. No hard effort is needed for this.

svasaṃkalpavikalpāṃśaṃ vivekopahitaṃ manaḥ | saṃtyajya rūpamābhogi karotyātmāvabodhanam || 38 ||

The mind that carries discernment gives up its vast form made of its own thoughts and doubts, and brings about the awakening to the self.

mahodayo manonāśo mahocchedasya tūdayaḥ | manonāśe prayatnaṃ tvaṃ kuru mā manaso jave || 39 ||

The destruction of the mind is a great rise. It is truly the rise of a great ending of trouble. So make your effort toward destroying the mind. Do not rush along with the speed of the mind.

aviralasukhaduḥkhavṛkṣakhaṇḍe viṣamakṛtāntamahorage vane'smin | prabhuridamakhile vivekahīnaṃ subhaga mano mahadāpadekahētuḥ || 40 ||

In this forest thick with trees of pleasure and pain, where the fierce great serpent named Death lurks, the mind without discernment is the master over this whole forest, dear friend, and it alone is the cause of great disaster.

When the sage had said this, the day came to its end. The sun went down to begin its evening rite. The assembly, after paying their respects, went to bathe. And along with the sun's rays, the darkening evening came in as well.
