Sri Rama said: Lord, you know the true nature of right conduct — this thing that has become so firmly known in the world, tell me that, Brahmin: what is this called "fate"?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | pauruṣaṃ sarvakāryāṇāṃ kartṛ rāghava netarat | phalabhoktṛ ca sarvatra na daivaṃ tatra kāraṇam || 2 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Raghava, self-effort is the doer of all deeds, nothing else. And it is self-effort that gets the result everywhere — fate is not the reason for it.
daivaṃ na kiṃcitkurute na bhuṅte na ca vidyate | na dṛśyate nādriyate kevalaṃ kalpanedṛśī || 3 ||
Fate does nothing at all, gets nothing at all, and does not even exist. It is not seen, and it is not respected — it is only a made-up idea of this kind.
Getting a wanted or an unwanted thing always comes through effort — whether the result is wanted or unwanted, it is what people call by the word "fate."
Something that is bound to happen and is brought about only by the means of effort — that very thing, among people in this world, is called by the word "fate."
"This is how my thinking was, and this is how my mind was made up" — this kind of talk, said after getting the result of one's action, is what is called "fate."
When a wanted or an unwanted result comes, the words that say "this is how it is" about it — these are only words said to comfort oneself, and this alone is called "fate."
Sri Vasishtha said: Well said, Raghava, you understand well. Listen, I will tell you everything, so that you become firmly sure that fate does not exist.
Rama, a creature at once becomes the doer of whatever it has a wish for. That the action would be one thing and the wish behind it another — this simply cannot be true.
grāmagho grāmamāpnoti pattnārthī ca pattanam | yo yo yadvāsanaḥ tatra sa sa prayatate sadā || 15 ||
One heading to a village reaches the village, and one wanting a town reaches the town. Whoever has a wish for a thing always makes the effort to go toward it.
evaṃ karmasthakarmāṇi karmaprauḍhā svavāsanā | vāsanā manaso nānyā mano hi puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ || 17 ||
So one action rests on another action, and one's own wish grows stronger through action. This wish is nothing other than the mind, and the mind is what we call the person.
yadaivaṃ tāni karmāṇi karma sādho mano hi tat | mano hi puruṣastasmāddaiva nāstīti niścayaḥ || 18 ||
Good man, since those actions are, in this way, actions of the mind, and the mind is that doer, and the mind is the person — so it is settled that fate does not exist.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ata eva hi rāma tvaṃ śreyah prāpnoṣi śāśvatam svaprayatnopanītena pauruṣeṇaiva nānyathā || 24 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: For this very reason, Rama, you will get lasting good — only through self-effort brought about by your own hard work, not in any other way.
You are wise, you are pure awareness alone — you are not the body, which is made of dull, unfeeling matter. If some other awareness had to know you, then where would this being-known-by-another even exist for you?
aśubhāccālitaṃ yāti śubhaṃ tasmādapītarat| jantościttaṃ tu śuvittanmuhūścatūyedgalāt || 32 ||
Moved away from the bad, the mind goes to the good, and from the good it can move back to the bad. In the same way, the mind of any creature keeps moving, again and again.
Balance comes through gentle, soothing words, not quickly, not all at once, but slowly, step by step. One should look after the mind, which is like a child, only through one's own effort.
Whatever a person keeps practicing in this world, that person becomes made of that very thing. This is seen among wise people, plain even to a child, and it is beyond all doubt.
As long as you have not fully trained your mind and do not know that highest state, till then, act according to what has been settled by your teacher and by the scriptures.
Then, once your impurities have burned away and you truly know the real nature of things, you must give up even the good store of wishes, needing no support anymore.
Following that very good path, walked by noble people, with a mind full of a pleasing feeling, reach that lasting state, sorrowless one; and after that, let go of that too, and stay steady and good.
