Vasishtha said: Just as water stays water whether it lies calm or rises as a wave, in the same way, in the vast ocean of truth, the freedom of a sage is the same whether he still has a body or has none.
sadehā vāstvadehā vā muktatā viṣaye na ca | anāsvāditabhogasya kuto bhojyānubhūtayaḥ || 2 ||
Whether he has a body or not, liberation has nothing to do with sense-objects; for someone who has never truly tasted pleasure, how could there be any experience of things to enjoy?
We see this greatest of sages, who is free while still alive, simply as he is, like any ordinary object in the world; nothing can any longer stand in the way of what he wishes inside.
sadehādehamuktānāṃ bhedaḥ ko bodharūpiṇām | yadevāmbutaraṅgatve saumyatve'pi tadeva tat || 4 ||
What real difference is there between the liberated who have a body and those who don't, since both are pure awareness itself? Whatever is true of water when it is a wave is exactly the same when the water is calm.
There isn't even the slightest difference between one liberated with a body and one liberated without it -- whether moving or still, wind is wind all the same.
Whether liberation comes with a body or without one is not something to be settled by ordinary proof; for us too, in that liberation, there is only an undivided oneness with our own true self.
Here, when the fruit of one's own effort is won, a cool joy rises in the heart, like moonlight -- and it comes from that effort alone, from nothing else.
Effort is clearly seen, right before our eyes, bearing real fruit through action, and it is effort that leads to results; 'fate' is just something dull and deluded people have imagined -- no such thing as fate exists at all.
Whatever the mind and body do, when it follows the path taught by wise and good people -- that alone is real effort, and that alone bears fruit; anything else is just the behavior of a madman.
Know that effort is of two kinds -- the effort of past lives, and the effort made in this life. The effort of past lives is quickly overcome by the effort made right now.
With real effort, steady practice, and both wisdom and enthusiasm, even mountains as huge as Meru can be swallowed whole -- so why even speak of overcoming the effort of a past life?
A person's manhood -- his real strength as a person -- reaches its peak only when his effort is guided by right teaching; guided this way, it fully delivers the result he wants. Without that guidance, it only brings harm.

Because of the bad state a person's own life has fallen into, one man, drop by drop, can slowly squeeze out many drops of water from just one handful held between his fingertips. But another man, who holds the whole earth -- with its oceans, mountains, cities, and islands -- still cannot properly give his dependents their fair share; for him, even the whole earth feels as if it were not enough to be called an earth.
