Sri Rama said: Whatever is seen in this world, moving or unmoving, all of it is unsteady, O brahmin, like a meeting that happens in a dream.
Water turns into dry land, and land that held water becomes dry ground. Truly, this whole world, with its wood, its water, its grass, keeps turning into its opposite.
This state of the world wears a curtain of dust made from countless beings, tossed about by the wind of the mind, decorated with falling, rising, sudden turns, and pretence.
This state of existence appears born out of confusion, like a wild dancer whirling in the grip of the dance, performing the fierce drama of this world.
This working of the world takes shape like a phantom city in the sky, only to break apart again; it charms like a woman whose side-long glances are as delicate as they are grand.
Weaving day and night, again and again, with his net of rays, the sun, who is Time itself, drives them on and on, watching for the moment of final destruction.
pratikṣaṇaviparyāsadāyinā nihataātmanā | jagadbhrameṇa ke nāma dhīmanto hi na mohitāḥ || 26 ||
This whirl of the world keeps turning everything upside down moment by moment, and crushes the very self within it - which wise man, indeed, has it not fooled?
For a moment it wraps its wide hollow in a garland of dark blue-black clouds; for a moment it roars loudly with thunder; for a moment it stands as if silent and mute.
For a moment it is studded with stars, for a moment decorated by the sun; for a moment it is delighted by the moon, for a moment stripped bare of everything.
This world is forever coming and going, standing only for a moment before it is destroyed - is there any wise man who, because of this, does not fear it?
In a moment troubles come, in a moment good fortune comes; in a moment there is birth, in a moment there is death - O sage, what here is not just a moment?
Once there was a certain man here; but as the days passed, a different man was born in his place. Nothing, O holy one, ever keeps one unchanging form - nothing is truly stable.
ghaṭasya paṭatā dṛṣṭā paṭasyāpi ghaṭasthitiḥ | na tadasti na yaddṛṣṭaṃ viparyasyati saṃsṛtau || 33 ||
A pot has been seen turning into cloth, and cloth too has been seen turning into a pot. There is nothing that has not been seen turning into its opposite in this changing world.
It stretches things out, brings them into being, consumes them, destroys them, and creates them again in turn - constantly turning back on a man, like night and day.
A hero has been killed by a coward; a hundred have been killed by just one; common people have risen to power - the whole world just keeps turning around and around.
Childhood, in just a few days, gives way to the glory of youth, and then to old age; even the body does not keep one form - so what trust can there be in things outside it?
It gathers things, brings them into being, consumes them, destroys them, and creates them again in turn - constantly turning back on a man, like night and day.
The countless fruits of all the beings, one after another, in the three worlds - ripening well or badly, each different from the other - fall every day, shaken down by the wind of time, from the vast, spreading tree of this ever-turning world.
