Homage to the one whose nature is knowing — the one from whom come the knower, knowledge, and the thing known; the seer, the seeing, and the thing seen; the doer, the cause, and the act.
Homage to the one whose nature is the bliss of Brahman — the one from whom drops of bliss sparkle out and fill the sky and the earth; he is the life of everyone.
Sutikshna said: O venerable one, you know the truth of dharma and you have mastered every scripture. I have one great doubt. Please, out of kindness, tell me the answer.
Is action the cause of liberation, or is knowledge the means to liberation? Or are both together the cause? Please decide and tell me the one true cause.
Agastya said: Just as a bird flies through the sky using both its wings, in the very same way the highest state is reached through knowledge and action together.
Liberation does not come from action alone or from knowledge alone. It comes only when both are together — the wise know both together to be the means.
agniveśyasya putro'bhūdvedavedāṅgapāragaḥ | guroradhītavidyaḥ sannājagāma gṛhaṃ prati || 10 ||
He was the son of Agnivesya, and he had fully mastered the Vedas and the Vedangas. After learning all his knowledge from his teacher, he set out for home.
agniveśya uvāca | prāha etadvaco nindyaṃ guruḥ putraṃ hitāya ca | kimetatputra kuruṣe pālanaṃ na svakarmaṇaḥ || 12 ||
Agnivesya said: The teacher spoke this harsh-sounding word to his son, but he spoke it for the son's own good: "Son, what is this that you are doing? You are not keeping up your own duties."
Karunya said: For as long as you live, you should keep up the daily fire-offering and perform the morning and evening prayers. This duty of action is taught by both the Veda and the tradition texts.
na dhanena bhavanmokṣaḥ karmaṇā prajayā na vā | tyāgamātreṇa kiṃtveke yatayo'śnanti cāmṛtam || 15 ||
Liberation does not come through wealth, nor through ritual action, nor through having children. Only through giving up everything do some seekers taste immortality.
It was a place where kinnara women, burning with desire, made love with kinnara men. That peak was joined to the flow of the heavenly river Ganga, which destroys great masses of sin.
devadūta uvāca | sādhu pṛṣṭaṃ tvayā subhru yathāvatkathayāmi te | ariṣṭanemī rājarṣirdattvā rājyaṃ sutāya vai || 23 ||
The messenger of the gods said: You have asked well, fair-browed one. I will tell you just as it happened. The royal sage Arishtanemi gave his kingdom to his son.
devadūta uvāca | śṛṇu bhadre yathāvṛttaṃ vistareṇa vadāmi te | tasminrājñi vane tatra tapaścarati dustaram || 27 ||
The messenger of the gods said: Listen, dear one, I will tell you everything in detail. That king was there in the forest, doing penance that was very hard to bear.
'filled with groups of apsaras, made beautiful with many kinds of musical instruments, and made beautiful with gandharvas, siddhas, yakshas, kinnaras, and others,'
The messenger said: In heaven, a person enjoys the greatest happiness in proportion to how much merit he has. With the best merit, one reaches the best heaven.
One cannot bear it when someone is above, one competes with those who are equal, and one feels content looking at those who are below - this goes on until the merit is used up.
When their merit is used up, people come back into this world of death. These, O king, and other things like them, are the good and bad points found in heaven.
The messenger of the gods said: After he said this, O gracious lady, I went and told Indra everything. When I had reported exactly what had happened, he was struck with great wonder.
tena saṃsāraduḥkhārto mokṣameṣyati ca kramāt | ityuktvā devarājena preṣito'haṃ tadantike || 47 ||
Through that truth, this man, who suffers from the pain of worldly life, will reach freedom step by step. Saying this, Indra, the king of the gods, sent me to Valmiki.
The king said: Lord, you know the truth of dharma, and you know everything that can be known; you are the best of the wise. Just by seeing you, I feel I have gained everything I wanted — that alone is my well-being.
Valmiki said: Listen, O King, I will tell you the whole Ramayana, leaving nothing out. If you listen to it, hold it in your mind, and work hard at it, you will become free while you are still alive.
I will tell you the good story of the talk between Vasishtha and Rama, which shows the way to freedom. O best of kings, since I know your true nature, I will speak — listen, O wise one.
rājovāca | ko rāmaḥ kīdṛśaḥ kasya baddho vā mukta eva vā | etanme niścitaṃ brūhi jñānaṃ tattvavidāṃ vara || 54 ||
The king said: Who is Rama? What kind of person is he? Whose son is he? Is he bound, or is he really free? Tell me this clearly, as sure knowledge, O best among the knowers of truth.
Valmiki said: Under the excuse of a curse, Hari has put on the form and the clothes of a king. He carries an ignorance he has taken on himself, so this lord of yours knows only a little.
rājovāca | cidānandasvarūpe hi rāme caitanyavigrahe | śāpasya kāraṇaṃ brūhi kaḥ śaptā ceti me vada || 56 ||
The king said, "Rama's true nature is consciousness and bliss; his very body is made of consciousness. Tell me why he was cursed, and tell me who cursed him."
Valmiki said, "Sanatkumara, who wanted nothing, was staying in Brahma's hall. Vishnu, the lord and master of the three worlds, came there from Vaikuntha."
"Sanatkumara, even though you want nothing, you have become stiff with pride and acted arrogantly. So become someone tormented by desire, and go by the name Sharajanma."
By him in turn Vishnu was cursed: "The all-knowing power that you have - you will lose it for some time, and during that time you will become someone without knowledge."
tena śapto hi nṛharirduḥkhārtaḥ strīviyogataḥ | tavāpi bhāryayā sārdhaṃ viyogo hi bhaviṣyati || 64 ||
Tormented by grief over the loss of his wife, Devadatta cursed Narahari, that is, Vishnu in the form of Narasimha: "You too will be separated from your wife."
